"And then there’s this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He’s this little kid — nobody even knows how old he is — wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can’t see his face, and plays slide guitar. It’s just the loudest strangest stuff you’ve ever heard. You don’t understand one word he’s saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That’s what I aspire to basically.” - Tom Waits
“Bob Log, you can use my dressing room…. wait, let me get you a towel.” - Sharon Jones
Bob Log III is a One Man Band Slide Guitar Party.
A perverse product of the Arizona desert, Bob Log III has been diligently traversing the globe since 1996, showcasing his incomparable talents and developing a devoted following along the way. A whirlwind of dextrous limbs and digits, this super star sonic showman has to be seen to be believed.
Clad in his cannonball man, extra tight jumpsuit and signature motorcycle helmet with telephone/microphone attached, Bob Log III unfailingly sweats up a river while kicking on a kick drum, stomping his homemade foot cymbal and playing slide on an old archtop guitar.
His endless pursuit for musical mayhem and a downright party has seen his unique talents utilised for children’s birthday parties, obscure beer barns, mammoth music festivals and everything in between.
Yet beyond these mesmerizing visuals, lies the true reason for Bob Log’s international, cult status and superhero adoration. It is quite simply the guitar playing - finger picked lightning, sliding up and down, stopping when it wants to, then starting again when it feels like it, all in a way that makes people move uncontrollably, smile and reel.
The upcoming release of his long awaited new album, MY SHIT IS PERFECT (due 1 February through Shock), begins the onset of another slew of adventures. Geography be damned, Bob Log III intends to take these songs and his unique slide guitar party to the good people of the world. There is no town too remote, there never has been.
But don’t take his word for it, let the guitar speak for itself:

Trikarma released Lovinglife which is a up beat positive chilled out lounge groove, easy listening and perky enough to remain fresh for more than one rotation. The album is an energy packed jazzy kick back to an early 1980’s progressive disco feel, I enjoyed it – little echoes of 1970’s funk and cool chimes run through some tracks.
Heartbreak Club appeal with O Tempora! O Mores!A no frills EP introducing a tight thrashing rock sound you may expect from three horizon fixed players. I particularly enjoyed the resounding sounds of Lend Me Yur Ears. I like the riffs.
There are two things that come to miond when I think Go Set. There’s the astonishingly wonderfulGo Set Aztecs New Album, Long Live Rock And Roll a direct lift from the early Australian sounds of the 1970s. The Aztecs are legendary and any self respecting dude will want to slip this album into the now. It’s too cool to explain in words you actually have to get out and listen to it yourself to appreciate how smoking it is.
Australian youth really responded top this band and loved them very much, and you will not wonder why once you hear them. The bopping hip dropping times are easily relived with this massively awesome material back on the playlist.
Most People I know Think That I’m Crazy is still a great hit. Long Live Rock And Roll is a surprising new one. What a very welcome release. So much music in 2008 has had an over produced blah blah blah sound to it. There’s not enough diversity in the middle ground yet. Plenty of Australian bands are doing fantastic things but there does not appear to be much coming up besides over hyped Idol stuff and very middle of the road material.
Any way, I digress. I was talking about Go Set. Of course the Go Set of old was the regular music news paper you could buy for 20 cents in the 1970s. Now we have a very pub sound coming from The Go Set.
Sort of, Celtic, jig and jaunt thrashing along with pipes, and including the whole kettle of bagpipes, mandolins etc. Again I like it, take back the comment about lack of diversity and change it to a lack of Australian music being played on the radio. Thanks to community radio for providing an outlet to hear local new music and rising bands, but no thanks to all the old farts and bitches inside the administration of community radio who treat it like anything but a community concern, corporate cop out trash.
Catherine Britt has had a nice release of late very good work on her part and a great DVD/CD pack for country sound enthusiasts.
Morrissey’s new studio album Years of Refusal will be released on February 14, preceded by the single “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris” one week prior. The single will be supported by two new songs “Because Of My Poor Education” and “Shame Is The Name”, the latter featuring additional vocals by Chrissie Hynde.
Years of Refusal was completed earlier this year at Conway Studios in LA with the late Jerry Finn, producer of Morrissey’s acclaimed 2004 UK No.2 album You Are The Quarry.
Morrissey describes the new album, the follow up to 2006’s Ringleader of The Tormentors (a UK No.1), as his strongest work to date. The 12-track album includes a clutch of new songs played live in recent months including “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”, “Something Is Squeezing My Skull”, “Mama Lay Softly On The Riverbed” and “One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell”.
School’s out for summer, the craziness of Schoolies Week is over, and Christmas holidays are finally kicking in. Once the whirl of the New Year rolls around, it will be time to gear up for study again…but where to start? To edge all those students into university life, Secret Sounds is launching The Big O, an annual orientation week event to get your uni campus rocking.
The Big O will see The Music, The Fratellis, Ben Lee, Bluejuice, Yves Klein Blue and triple j Unearthed J Award nominees Cassette Kids hit the East Coast to welcome the school year.
Coming to a campus near you, The Big O is a series of O Week events to be held in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Wollongong and Newcastle. Tickets are available for both students and the general public. Please note these will be the only shows for headlining acts in each state! While The Big O is the official music celebration of O Week on campus, traditional initiation events will still be in full swing. Check your university website for full details.
In their last visit to Australia The Music danced up a storm, leaving the Splendour in the Grass tent bent at the seams and the crowd ballistic for more. Their headline shows sold out in minutes. Now, The Music look forward to returning to Australian shores in 2009. “It’s one of those places you look at when you are younger and can only dream about going to, so whenever I'm there I always feel privileged,” says frontman Rob Harvey. Their album ‘Strength In Numbers’ is out now.
Glasgow guitar-slingers, The Fratellis are no strangers to the road. Having toured the UK and USA six times, the Brit Award-winning trio were one of the highlights of Splendour in the Grass 2008. Their second album ‘Here We Stand’ saw them go from indie stars to pop icons. Their sold out headline shows had venues shaking, bodies jumping, and punters shouting for more.
Giving any crowd the warm and fuzzies is as easy as a smile and a tune for Ben Lee. The ex-pat Aussie returns home with a full band for the first tour of brand new material from his forthcoming album, “The Rebirth of Venus” due out on February 7th 2009. The ARIA Award-winning artist’s new single ‘I Love Pop Music’ has already elected Ben Lee the President of Pop.
Who better to get a party started than Bluejuice? With a mandate to get people dancing with carefree abandon, the five piece pulls together a sweaty mix of rock, hip hop, electro and disco. Give them a little bit of vitriol on the dance floor at The Big O.
Fresh out of the LA studio, Yves Klein Blue will be returning to their loyal Australian fan base. The Brisbane four-piece have been recording their debut album in Hollywood with Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, The Vandals). Yves Klein Blue caused a stir in 2008 with the release of their debut EP “Draw Attention to Themselves” which saw them embark on a national and international tour, with sold out shows from home-town Brisbane to London and New York. Their debut full-length album is due out in April 2009.
Sydney’s Cassette Kids are the final addition to The Big O bill. On the cusp of something big, Cassette Kids have already earned a fierce reputation thanks to captivating vocalist Katrina Noorbergen. They have toured with The Presets and shared the stage with Ting Tings, New Young Pony Club, Van She and many more.
Get some higher learning as The Big O schools students across the nation in the art of a good party throughout Orientation Week 2009!

DIED PRETTY formed in early 1984 after vocalist Ron Peno's previous band, The 31st, had split. Music journalist and keyboardist Frank Brunetti had formed a band with Brett Myers, formerly of The End, and suggested Peno join as singer. After various temporary rhythm sections, Jonathan Lickliter and Colin Barwick from The End joined a month later on bass and drums respectively.
The band came quickly to the attention of the Australian independent music scene, with the first two singles "Out Of The Unknown" and the 12-minute psychedelic epic "Mirror Blues" (released split over a 7" in Australia and intact on 12" in the UK) and then the EP Next To Nothing starting their career with tremendous critical attention and three alternative chart #1 hits in a row. All three records also achieved "Single Of The Week" in UK music weekly Melody Maker, though the band never achieved any popularity or notice in the UK
