Circle of Rhythm
TransMission
Adelaide Festival Centre
TransMission at the Festival Centre continues to thrill, offering this delicious appearance from Circle of Rhythm in the Space.
The traditions and languages of percussion are fascinating; it can effectively touch us (even in spite of ourselves) and connect with deeply primal or basic gestures we all share.
Master percussionist Greg Sheehan, Wadaiko form drummer Ben Walsh and the esteemed Bobby Singh on tabla were united in rhythm from the first beat to the last all through the program.
This particular music and the men who make it reflect a respectful sensibility with refreshingly Aussie perspectives.
The charming revelation of their individual personas combined with the fascinating musical journeys of discovery they’ve each made is shared in anecdotes and introductions and it makes for a night worthy of the enormously enthusiastic audience response.
The performance included a selection of works from their album ‘Metrical’.
While delivering the promised ‘powerhouse of razor sharp percussion’ they also revealed their softer side with ‘Yatra’ and ‘Water Dragon’ which Walsh dedicated to the precious resource of water itself.
Communicating via Japanese, Indian, Australian and other drumming traditions using their voices as well as their instruments they quite literally created a circle of rhythm as captivatingly magic as it was skillfully masterful.
album (Metrical available via groovelands.com) RRP $20
