February 18th 2009 06:20
INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED AND GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING GUITARIST MARTIN TAYLOR TO TOUR AUSTRALIA WITH UK'S FASTEST RISING JAZZ SINGER ALISON BURNS IN MARCH 2009

When Grammy award winning guitarist Martin Taylor (pictured), who has collaborated with great singers including Peggy Lee, Martin Carthy, Jamie Cullum, Dionne Warwick and Bryn Terfel, chose to record a special duo album with a vocalist he chose the UKs fastest rising jazz singer Alison Burns.
Martin Taylor

MARTIN TAYLOR MBE

Award winning guitarist MARTIN TAYLOR has established a unique musical career as an internationally acclaimed musician, and his inimitable style has seen him recognized as the world's foremost exponent of solo jazz guitar playing. Although completely self taught, he has enjoyed a remarkable musical career spanning across four decades, and during that time has invented and developed a way of playing the guitar that is admired, and often imitated, by guitarists all over the world.

As well as being a true guitar innovator, he is also a master concert performer, dazzling audiences with his solo shows, which combine virtuosity, emotion, humor, with a strong stage presence. He spends much of the year traveling the world, playing in concert halls in Europe, North America, Japan, Asia, and Australasia. As well as his solo concerts and recordings, he has also collaborated with musicians from many different musical genre including Stephane Grappelli, Chet Atkins, Bill Wyman, Dionne Warwick, Sacha Distel, Bryn Terfel and Jamie Cullum.

From 1979 to 1989 he toured the world and recorded over 20 albums with the French jazz violin legend STEPHANE GRAPPELLI. Monsieur Grappelli described him as Rich in talent and elegance, he's a great artist.

In 2002, he was appointed MBE For Services to Jazz Music, in The Queen's Birthday Honors List, which he received personally from Her Majesty the Queen at an investiture at Buckingham Palace.

In 2007 he recieved the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Heart of Jazz Award in recognition of his career in music, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Wales Jazz Guitar Festival for his Contribution to Jazz Guitar Worldwide and was voted Best Guitarist in the British Jazz Awards for a record eleventh time.

When not touring he divides his time between his homes in France and Scotland where he writes music for TV and film.

His autobiography MARTIN TAYLOR - AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A TRAVELLING MUSICIAN and his latest CD/DVD FRETERNITY are available worldwide.

ALISON BURNS

The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work. Surrounded by the surfeit of little girl voices prevalent in jazz today, it's almost a relief to encounter a mature but flexible voice like ALISON BURNS. Beyond the vocal quality is imaginative delivery and interpretation that comes from experience in life as well as extensive touring in the US, UK, Italy and China. TV host Michael Parkinson has declared himself as a fan and her debut album 'Kissing Bug' featuring Guy Barker and David Newton and produced by guitarist MARTIN TAYLOR has received rave reviews. At home in any setting, from festival and theatre stages to small, intimate venues, Alison Burns never fails to touch the audience with her soul-stirring performances.

Born in Scotland, ALISON BURNS grew up drawing inspiration from the recordings of the jazz greats like Sarah Vaughn, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. In demand as much abroad as in the UK she has performed concerts in Tokyo, Nashville, New York, Cannes, Capri and Shanghai.

French writer Emile Zola never met ALISON BURNS, and his perceptive quote may seem like an unusual introduction, but it's wholly appropriate for this rising star of the jazz world, and her rather unusual road to success. With the release of her second album 1:AM, a collaboration with world-renowned and multi award-winning jazz guitarist MARTIN TAYLOR, Alison brings her unique interpretation to a combination of traditional jazz standards, classic contemporary songwriting, and an original song which holds particular personal significance. It's a track listing which reflects the Dundee singer's lifetime love affair with music.

“My father was a guitarist and my mum would get into his gigs around Dundee for free by carrying the case...he still carried the guitar! He used to sing to me, numbers by Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Bessie Smith. That's what I heard around the house. I also used to watch old Hollywood movies and dream of being a singer and actress. We had linoleum flooring in the bathroom, so I used to sprinkle it with salt and try my hand at tap dancing! The first time I sang was trying to pick out harmonies in songs on the radio.”

No matter what else has happened in Alison's life, that involvement with music has run in parallel - only now is it being allowed to take the lead. Life has certainly provided inspiration. As the first female apprentice engineer in the famous Timex watch factory in Dundee, the 16-year-old refused to compromise glamour in the workplace and never forgot her lipstick. The experience showed that she was perfectly capable of holding her own in a man's world.

Other jobs followed (including being sacked from a bingo-calling job) but it was at the age of 21 that Alison realised that her childhood dreams would only be realised if she actually did something about it. The death of her brother Alan, who was serving in the Falklands brought home the reality of a life lived unfulfilled. Alan was very much the inspiration for the lyrics of the original song True on 1AM, which has music written by Martin Taylor.

Still based in Dundee, ALISON BURNS's acting, singing, and presenting career took off. As singer and songwriter in a band called The Rainmates, she tuned down two record deals which just “didn't feel right at the time”. Her first love was still the music she had heard in her childhood, however, and this led to the formation of a three-part female harmony group, The Penny Dainties. Not only did Alison get the group together, it was normal for her to be hanging over a sewing machine in the early hours, making the frocks!

Like every other performer, the days could be empty. However, never one to waste any time, Alison used the days productively and gained a law degree from Dundee University. She practised briefly, but the pull of music was too much and she found herself working in the music business, albeit behind the scenes. For a while, her own music career was put on the back burner, but it's telling that as soon as she turned her attention to jazz singing again, there was instant acclaim. The release of her debut album, Kissing Bug, in March 2007 was received with universal acclaim and became the first album by a Scottish jazz singer to reach the Jazz Top 10. She was lauded by the likes of jazz guru Michael Parkinson who invited ALISON BURNS to play at his hotel. The man himself was in the front row and threw his arms around her as she came off stage.

So far she has packed her bag to perform in far-flung destinations such as Tokyo, Nashville, New York, Cannes, Italy and Shanghai as well as exclusive events for the likes of Virgin Airlines and Sir Terence Conran. She has performed at jazz festivals and venues across the country, with her own group and guesting with Martin Taylor at a number of concerts. It was at these concerts that the idea for 1:AM came about. The recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass were the inspiration, stripping back the songs to vocal and guitar. Despite the smoky dark eyes and robust sense of humour, there's little of the jazz diva about Alison Burns. As a committed vegetarian, her greatest concern on the road is finding decent food as well as keeping in touch with her husband, family and friends. Venues will be shocked to find the only dressing room request is water and her only real superstition is “always wearing my granny's earrings”. For those who may think that Alison is where she has always wanted to be, that's true up to a point, but looking at her track record, this is obviously just the beginning. “I'd like to tour more and keep adding songs to my repertoire. It would be wonderful to sing with Tony Bennett and Michael Buble. It's also an ambition to sing with strings – I think it’s every singers ambition to sing with strings. I'd also like to write more songs.”

1:AM from ALISON BURNS and MARTIN TAYLOR is released on P3 Records. The album was inspired by the recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass. On the album, produced by Tony Platt, Alison Burns and Martin Taylor capture the essence of the recordings with just voice and guitar.

In 2009 the duo will hit the road to tour and promote this new album which is produced by legendary record producer Tony Platt (Bob Marley, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy). The tour and album take its inspiration from the Grammy award winning collaboration between Joe Pass & Ella Fitzgerald, mixing repertoire from The Great American Songbook and contemporary material.

REVIEW | NEIL YOUNG | BIG DAY OUT

February 3rd 2009 03:26
NEIL YOUNG AT THE BIG DAY OUT

It's difficult to find words for the emotional impact this concert took on me. What a fantastic musician, singer and personality Neil Young is. Why was I emotionally staggered seeing/hearing him? The simple answer is - he has been a constant all my life. In fact we used (my older sister) to have a green vinyl bootleg of a concert he gave in 1978 or thereabouts. It had his classics of the day on it, a good deal of rambling philosophy leaning towards preserving the natural world of the time... Mother Nature featured big then, and although she still does, it was his intense rocking soul that cracked through the generations.

Surrounded by younger folk who had spent hours and hours hearing all sorts of great music, Big Day Out crowds in Adelaide certainly took a little while to place Young's sound and appreciate it. A stinking hot day didn't really stop anyone from enjoying the day, it was awesome over all; not the least because so many of Young's songs have been part of the fabric of life for at least thirty years. When he sang Hurricane there was a swell of recognition - it was all on for the massive 30,000 strong crowd. Maybe 6000 of them were my age (mid 40's) and they mostly seemed to be sitting in the shade up the back quietly enjoying the view and the music.

Sure, down the front in the mosh pit some yelled disrespectfully "Play some rock and roll" but they didn't do that for long. Needle and the damage done caused a bit of a quiet riot. One 20-something lad who had been bagging the "old dude" on stage suddenly shut up and sat down on the cool grass. There's always been power and emotion in Young's work. Part of my excitement and enthusiasm was a direct result of watching many younger people hearing some of his classics in the flesh. The songs still mean as much, if not more, today as they did 30 years ago.

The set was dressed with a range of novel fans, hanging letters and golden light. All in all it was an excellent concert and I was just as excited at the end of it as my 15 year old was; and he was very skeptical about the whole idea of an elder statesman of folk rock (nearly as old as his grandfather) until the messages and emotional journeys.

Top quality, no holes barred - beautiful concert.

NEIL YOUNG at BIG DAY OUT? You better believe it. From the festival that brought you the likes of Iggy Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and Nick Cave. In 2009, BIG DAY OUT presents legendary guitarist and songwriter NEIL YOUNG –Anti-war protestor. Hall of Famer. Environmental crusader. Instantly recognisable vocalist. Father. Social activist. Filmmaker. Godfather of Grunge. Oscar-nominated songwriter. Crazy Horse. Buffalo Springfield. Crosby, Stills, Nash and…

YOUNG’s 90-minute BIG DAY OUT sets around the nation will crackle into life at 8.30pm on the main stage and are guaranteed to be full of classics. His electric band features long-time cohort and pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith, bassist Rick Rosas, drummer Chad Cromwell, guitarist Anthony Crawford and singer/guitarist (and wife) Pegi Young.

For a taste of what you’re in for, check out this hit-heavy setlist YOUNG played at Denmark’s Roskilde festival earlier this year: Love and Only Love; Hey Hey, My My; Powderfinger; Spirit Road; Cinnamon Girl; All Along the Watchtower; Oh, Lonesome Me; Mother Earth; The Needle and the Damage Done; Unknown Legend; Heart of Gold; Old Man; Get Back to the Country; Words; No Hidden Path; A Day in the Life.

Reviews from YOUNG’s string of festival appearances this past European summer have singled the shows out as some of his best in years – pointing to the feelgood singalong moments, the band’s awe-inspiring rock playing and “full-on electric assault”, the moving and “simply harmonious” nature of the “quieter section” of the set, the frontman’s good mood, and the great atmosphere in the crowd.

“NEIL YOUNG is… NEIL YOUNG. How else can it be put? No one else can do this. Live, he’s the greatest, hands down. A cathartic and primal musical experience.” (Epoch Times, July 2008)

Back in the States in October, Spin witnessed this elder statesman of rock kick off his US tour by breathing “new vitality into songs more than three decades old… his set became a veritable greatest hits collection”.

It’s been five years since YOUNG last toured Down Under – and even longer since he delivered such a dream setlist for fans. Who knows when he will be back again? So whether you’ve followed him for years, or you’re in need of a rock’n’roll history lesson, NEIL YOUNG at BIG DAY OUT 2009 is a rarefied experience you can’t afford to miss.

Tickets to his Sydney and Melbourne solo shows and to the Sydney and Gold Coast BIG DAY OUTs were snapped up within hours of going on sale but if you’re quick you may still be able to experience one of the greatest rock and roll experiences of your lifetime at one of the following shows.

1st ANNOUNCEMNT FUTURE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2009

Basement Jaxx XL Recordings, UK

Basement Jaxx are a critically acclaimed UK house music duo, comprised of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, which rose to popularity in the late 1990s. In 1999, they released their debut album Remedy (featuring singles like "Red Alert", "Rendez Vu" and "Jump N' Shout") to wide acclaim. Their follow up, 2001's Rooty, included singles "Romeo", "Jus 1 Kiss" and the iconic "Where's Your Head At?"; while 2003 saw the lads release Kish Kash - which was recognised at the 47th Grammy awards, winning Buxton and Ratcliffe the inaugural Best Electronic/Dance Album award. In addition to their own work, Basement Jaxx are in-demand remixers. Highlights on this front include "4 My People" by Missy Elliott, "Like I Love You" by Justin Timberlake and "She Wants to Move" by N.E.R.D.

N*E*R*D Star Trak, Virgina Beach, USA

With their digital musical palette and vivid imaginations, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo have taken their hip-hop foundation and un-tethered the bounds of pop, bestowing unsuspecting hit records in almost machine-gun-like succession - whether in rap (Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, et al), R&B (Usher, Babyface), pop (Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake) or rock (No Doubt). But N.E.R.D is not the Neptunes. N.E.R.D is a fly-or-die, thrash-around, do-as-you-will, set-your-soul-on-fire alter-ego that subscribes to no rules, and adheres to no agenda. It is Pharrell, Chad and Shay: a trio whose chemistry allows the uninhibited exploration of the sounds, emotions and impulses of self, society, identity and belonging.

CSS Sub Pop Records, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Bursting out of Sao Paulo in 2003, CSS are a group of friends with an unquenchable thirst for good times and indulgence in all things pop and art. Dropping in 2006, their debut album Cansei de Ser Sexy served up danceable electro/rock songs littered with pop culture and sexual references. Easily translating from online environs to live audiences, they quickly became one of the most in-demand live acts from Europe to Japan. Equal parts dance party, urban circus, and complete chaos, the band's unaffected, unbridled joy when performing is their trademark! A tough, street-ready recreation of the frenetic energy of their live shows, their latest album Donkey is summer's ultimate ride - so get on it!

Etienne De Crecy Solid, France

Deep house DJ/producer Etienne de Crecy was a key figure behind Paris' rise as one of the world's dance music hubs during the 1990s. Born in Lyon, he has peddled his talent under several different guises, including Motorbass, La Chatte Rouge, and Super Discount. His first major undertaking, Motorbass, grabbed a cult following soon after its launch in 1991 and not only alerted the world to the rapidly evolving Parisian dance music scene, but also spawned underground favorites like the Motorbass EP, "Transphunk" single and Pansoul album. An irresistible talent, de Crecy has also served up the legendary Super Discount and Tempovision albums, released countless iconic tunes (including "Prix Choc" and "Am I Wrong?") and remixed the likes of Air and Alex Gopher.

Yacht DFA Records, PORTLAND, OREGON, USA

YACHT is a lot of things. It's kind of a band, but it's mostly a genre-and-media-spanning life project founded and led by American, Jona Bechtolt. Bechtolt and new member Claire L. Evans, make anthemic power jams, play them backwards and soak them in nearly-psychedelic cherry cola! A promiscuous genre-smasher since his adolescence, Bechtolt is indie rock's Timbaland and has plied his unique breed of beat-heavy laptop wizardry to endless collaborations. Evans is a media artist and musician who has presented her cosmic PowerPoint performances at MoMA PS1 and The Kitchen, and has frequently collaborated with Bechtolt since 2004. In 2007 the duo played more than 200 shows in 17 countries around the world (including Australia!) and toured with luminaries like LCD Soundsystem and Architecture in Helsinki.

Steve Angello Size Records, Stockholm, Sweden

When Steve Angello released Woz not Woz with fellow Swede, Eric Prydz, in 2004, things changed forever! Released on CR2 Recordings it single-handedly elevated him to become one of the most in-demand producers, remixers and DJs in the world. A prominent member of the illustrious Swedish House Mafia (with close friends Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell), now, in 2008, he has a wealth of worldwide club hits to his name (including Raining Again, Tell Me Why and Not So Dirty) and runs his own highly successful label, Size Records. DJing every weekend non-stop for the last few years, his diverse sets are notorious for keeping crowds electrified and have scored him thousands of adoring fans across the planet. He's an Australian favourite, and he's back for more!

Sebastian Ingrosso
Refune, Stockholm, Sweden

A notorious member of the all-conquering Swedish House Mafia collective, Sebastian Ingrosso is a masterful musical force to be reckoned with! Launching onto the global scene late last millennium, this prodigious, party-heard DJ/producer is world-renowned for both his sublime skills on decks and in the studio chair. Boasting a myriad of club bombs to his name (including anthems like Echo Vibes, Together, Get Dumb and It's True), he has regularly collaborated with studio-mate and best friend Steve Angello to deliver acclaimed tunes and compilations for the likes of Subliminal and Mixmag, and, to top it all off, is also globally revered for his remixing talents - which have seen him flawlessly re-rub lofty icons like of Deep Dish, Moby and Royskopp.

Markus Schulz Coldharbour, Armada, Berlin, Germany

Markus Schulz
dreams of meeting the world - and the way he's going, this dream just might come true! Currently 13 on the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll, he is a star on the rise and one that's been travelling the world playing his personal brand of dark, moody, melodic trance and meeting as many people as possible. Over the past few years he has crossed the globe countless times; and, via his hugely popular radio show, Global DJ Broadcast, he reaches out to millions with his trademark dark, melodic trance (enriched with beautiful chilled tracks, guitars, and sublime vocals) on a weekly basis. Having started the year with the release of his fourth compilation for Armada Music, 2008 has been a big one for him and to cap it off, he's finally bringing his sound back down under!

JOACHIM GARRAUD
Gum Prod, Paris, France

French superstar Joachim Garraud started his illustrious career in the early 1990s as a DJ at The Boy - an infamous Parisian club attributed with discovering the techno phenomenon in France. A Musicology graduate of the Academy of Music and Percussion, he moved swiftly to production and created his very own recording studio in the middle of Paris. Within its confines, for the last decade he has remixed and composed his way to the top not too mention producing artists like David Guetta, David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, Cassius and Moby along the way. Blending DJing and improvisation, Joachim's performances are truly unique. Armed with his keytar, multimedia DVD show and Space Invader friends from outer space, he travels the globe at the speed of sound!

Tocadisco Superstar Records/Toca45, Colonge, Germany

A self-taught studio wizard and DJing phenomenon, Tocadisco is one of Germany's finest, most revered dance music exports in recent years. Hailing from the uber-cool city of Cologne, since the early 2000s he's been relentlessly dropping bomb after bomb on the world's dancefloors. From original tracks like Nobody Likes (the Records I Play), You're No Good For Me and Streetgirls, to his storming remixes of Axwell, The Egg, Booka Shade, New Order and Moby; it's little wonder that Tocadisco has firmly established himself as one of the most popular and exciting artists in the booth today. A firm crowd favourite in Australia, the return of this globetrotting star with the ominous tiger logo is highly anticipated

Christopher Lawrence Pharmacy Music, Los Angeles, USA

Dubbed "A Superstar DJ" by the US's URB and One of The Most Popular DJs on the Global Circuit by DJ Magazine, Christopher Lawrence is one of the biggest, most respected and popular names in dance music today. Once an outsider in a world dominated by European and UK DJs, he has risen to the top of the international dance music heap. Now considered one of the key global players and America's leading dance music export, he regularly plays his tough techno trance sets on main stages at the world's biggest festivals and super-clubs. In the world of international dance culture, there are DJs who are leaders and those who are followers. Christopher Lawrence is a true leader.

LIFELIKE Wall Of Sound, Vulture, Paris, France

Producing first for other artists in the early/mid nineties, Lifelike joined the Parisian label 20000ST in 2001 and released his very first single. Supported by a who's who of DJs and Parisian radio FG, The Soul Of quickly became the classic summer club anthem of 2002. The rest, as they say, is history! On top of DJing all over the world, this gifted French star has remixed everyone from Justice, Chromeo and Sebastian Leger to Belle and Annie; while his collaborative tune with Kris Menace Discolpolis is one of the highest selling tunes of all time.

Mr Oizo Ed Banger Records, Paris, France

Mr. Oizo is the pseudonym of French music producer Quentin Dupieux. Dupieux is most famous for his electro track Flat Beat, which became a hit all across Europe in 1999 for being featured in a series of Levi's jeans TV advertisements. A veteran of two widely acclaimed artist albums (Analog Worms Attack and Moustache (Half a Scissor), his most recent EP, Transexual, has hit the mark with Busy P's taste-making Ed Banger crew, while his remixes for the likes of Kavinsky, Jamelia, Cassius, Scissor Sisters and Calvin Harris have caved minds worldwide! As if his DJ/producer accolades weren't enough, Oizo released his first feature film, Steak, in 2007. Vive la Oizo!

Super8 & Tab Anjunabeats, Helsinki, Finland

Leading the charge of the Scandinavian trance revolution, Finland's Miika Eloranta and Janne Mansnerus (aka Super8 & Tab) have grown to become one of the genre's favourite duos. With monster tunes like First Aid, Helsinki Scorchin, Needs to Feel and Suru to their name, and regular support from icons like Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Tiesto; it's no secret why! Infamous for fusing their tracks with unique, edgy and unusual sounds and vocals, this distinctive Super8 & Tab sound has steadily pushed the talented pair to the forefront of the international trance pack. Dividing their time between DJing, the studio and their own worldwide radio show on DI:FM, their long-awaited artist album is due to drop any minute.

REVIEW
Fri 21 Nov, 10pm
The Gov, Adelaide

MARTHA WAINWRIGHT

Martha Wainwright is a wonderful singer and her down to earth personality is always somewhat droll. She bemoaned that she'd spent the day in Adelaide in bed, and joked about the whole serial-killer thing here... until a local shouted out that we were all "glad to see her", when she got the idea it would be best to move on. That she certainly did, without leaving any strange question hanging of why that sort of a joke she simply requested more beers for the band and got on with the show. It was a windy balmy night in serial killer central, and we were out in force to appreciate the great and spirited Martha.

Her new material mixed in with her old, and her voice as ever captures great depth and emotion. Perhaps some of the melodies she naturally resounds creep over from one song to another, but I think it's that lilt and stream of sounds that ground her, and us in the listening.

I couldn't say I've seen her all by herself before, so I did hanker for moments in the past when I've seen her in concert with brother Rufus and mother Kate, or on stage for Came so far for beauty at the Opera House in 2005. However having said that - she held her own without the need of any support as such, and the support she received from the band was excellent.

I think everyone at The Gov had themselves a great and adorable time in spite of a cold and windy night, Martha shared the great resonance of her warmth and noone went homew without a special glow.

MARTHA WAINWRIGHT IN AUSTRALIA NOVEMBER

I interviewed her brother Rufus when he was over and the two of them were doing the Leonard Cohen Tribute, Came so far.... Make no mistake both siblings are great on stage and I'd say it's because they have both been involved in the music and entertainment industry on account of their show biz folks, since they were kids. This will be a concert not to be missed.

David Jobling

“Martha Wainwright excels at both singing and songwriting, and earns herself a spot among this decade’s foremost performers.” Popmatters.com

“…a grand, glowering gravitas – part Patti Smith, part Leonard Cohen” Uncut Magazine

“…taking music and wringing from it a startling wealth of shiver-inducing moments.” Pitchfork Media

“Wainwright moves amid prettily finger-picked folk-rock and more eccentric arrangements” NY Times

“…her stage presence suggests several things at one time - defiant and strong, yet with an edge of sadness and vulnerability as well.” Spin Magazine

As part of the famous Wainwright/McGarrigle musical dynasty, Martha Wainwright was engulfed in a sea of music from childbirth. But the Brooklyn-based chanteuse has cemented her claim as a bona-fide artist in her own right.

Following the release of her sophomore album, I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too, Martha Wainwright and her full band are returning to Australia in November 2008.

Disbanding her initial career choice as an actor when she realized her priorities lay with songwriting, the Montreal native moved to New York City where her burgeoning singer-songwriter career began. Performing in bars and coffee-houses across the city, her signature raw stage presence blossomed and bloomed into the rousing live performer we see today.

With a constantly changing timbre of depth, Wainwright displays a remarkable polarity between songs of harrowing despair that also show a sense of spontaneity and playfulness. It is this striking mixture of light and shade and her ability to conceptualize, tackle and achieve dynamic arrangements that marry so beautifully with her heartfelt lyrics of remarkable candour and acrimonious humour.

She can, within a single verse, play both angel and demon.

On Wainwrights’s second album, I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too, she is joined by legendary figures including Pete Townsend, The Band’s Garth Hudson, Donald Fagen from Steely Dan, as well as Rufus, mum and aunt Kate and Anna McGarrigle respectively, and cousin Lily Lakin - another rising star of the lineage. Though an impressive lineup, they serve as a backdrop to what is a compelling one-woman show.

Embarking on a European tour with her band in October before heading to Australia, this show is one not to be missed.

Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSCIAL Live on Stage!

Previews from Sunday 14th December

Gala opening 18th December

Capitol Theatre Sydney.

Sydney preview performances for Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL - Live On Stage! went on sale this week with A - reserve tickets from only $39.90. Previews commence on Sunday December 14 ahead of the Gala Opening on Thursday December 18.

As the show opens just as the school holidays begin - extra mid-week matinee performances have also been added to the schedule each week for the Sydney season.

The 32-strong cast, featuring some of Australia’s hottest young singers, dancers and actors will come together in just two weeks to start rehearsals.

“After an extensive national audition process, we are so thrilled with the Australian cast of High School Musical, who are phenomenally talented and highly energetic performers,” said joint Producers Kevin Jacobsen (Jacobsen Presents) and Tim McFarlane (The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific).

Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL – Live on Stage!, is based on the smash-hit Disney Channel Original Movie and has captivated a legion of young fans since it premiered in Chicago in August 2007. Featuring all the characters and chart-topping songs from the movie, this spectacular stage musical expands on the original work and includes two new numbers and a huge mega-mix finale.

The stage musical’s key creative team includes David Simpatico who wrote the book (an adaptation of Peter Barsocchini’s original TV movie script), director Jeff Calhoun (whose credits include the award-winning Broadway revivals of Grease and Big River), choreographer Lisa Stevens and music producer and supervisor Bryan Louiselle.

Cast includes, Chris Durling as Troy Bolton - Captain of the Wildcats basketball team and the coolest guy at East High. Rebecca Tapia as Gabriella Montez - shy but gorgeous Brainiac with the sweetest voice at school. Teagan Wouters as Sharpay Evans - the drama queen! Liam McIlwain as Ryan Evans – the younger (by 6 minutes) brother of Sharpay. Turanga Merito as Chad Danforth -the Wildcat’s hard core No. 2 player. Elenoa Rokobaro as Taylor McKessie - upfront Science Club president. Scott Irwin as Coach Bolton – Troy’s Dad and East High’s basketball coach. Donna Lee as Ms Darbus – East High’s drama teacher and passionate advocate of the performing arts. Caity Fowler as Kelsi Neilson – composer and drama club stalwart. Andrew Hazzard as Zeke Baylor – Wildcat and pastry lover and Phoebe Coupe as Martha Cox – brainiac with a love of hip-hop Nathan Derrick as Jack Scott – The Velvet Fog of East High’s PA system (new character for the musical).

The story of Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL – Live on Stage! follows the plight of basketball captain Troy and the brainy but shy Gabriella who discover they have a secret passion for singing. When they decide to audition for the student musical it sends shockwaves through the High School’s rigid social cliques. Troy’s basketball team, Gabriella’s fellow science clubbers, even the drama regulars, do all they can to keep the pair apart and off-stage. When Troy and Gabriella defy their friends and family they inadvertently inspire the other students to go public with their own secret talents and dreams. Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL – Live on Stage! is an infectious celebration of both individualism and togetherness, with a story that says you don’t have to change to be accepted, you just have to be yourself.

Feast Receives Australia Council Grant of $99k

The Australia Council for the Arts Community Partnership Committee has approved a grant of $99,000 towards the Adelaide Feast Festival 2009 program of activities.

This is the highest level of funding Feast has ever received from ANY funding body. This money will be used towards Feast Community Arts Projects for 2009 including arts projects that will be developed with young people, community members living with HIV/AIDS, community members from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and queer families.

The planned artistic projects will bring professional artists together with the community to create film, theatre, music, photographic and literature projects.

Feast Artistic Director Daniel Clarke said, This funding is amazing. It will allow Feast to deliver some brilliant projects to South Australian audiences. To my knowledge there is not another queer arts and cultural festival in Australia that receives this level of support from AustraliaÂ’s peak body for the arts. I am thrilled to be able to engage with so many fantastic South Australian artists in the delivery of these projects

Feast 2008 which will run from 15 - 30 November with the theme of diverseCITY.

Feast 2008 will again be one of the largest queer arts and cultural Festivals staged in Australia, with more than 500 artists from Australia and overseas presenting 160 events, 61 different performances including 48 South Australian premieres and 27 world premieres across live performance, music, visual arts, film, literature, forums, workshops, community and special events and parties.

Feast, is unique in Australia in that it receives support through all levels of government.

In 2007 Feast attendances rose by 28% across all paid events and produced an economic impact to the state of $1.7 million.

Patrons may arrange to receive a copy of the 2008 Feast Festival Guide by mail by emailing Feast.

A Feast of diverseCITY

The full program for the 12th annual Feast Festival (Feast 2008) was launched in Adelaide last night at Higher Ground, Light Square, by Feast Director Daniel Clarke.

Higher Ground will be the Hub for Feast 2008 which will run from 15 - 30 November with the theme of diverseCITY. Feast events can be found in more than 81 venues through the State including The Feast Hub @ Higher Ground, Tandanya, The Bakehouse and La Boheme.

Feast 2008, will again be one of the largest queer arts and cultural Festivals staged in Australia, with more than 500 artists from Australia and overseas presenting 160 events, 61 different performances including 48 South Australian premieres and 27 world premieres across live performance, music, visual arts, film, literature, forums, workshops, community and special events and parties.

Feast, is unique in Australia in that it receives support through all levels of government. In 2007 Feast attendances rose by 28% across all paid events and produced an economic impact to the state of $1.7 million.

Feast 2008 will present artists from Berlin, Spain Tokyo, New Zealand, the UK the USA and from around Australia. For the first time Feast is producing Australian tours of two of its overseas artists, jazz singer and comedian Lea Delaria (USA) in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, and performance artist Taylor Mac (USA) in Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Daniel Clarke said, Feast is at the forefront of queer culture in Australia and overseas. Our theme of diverseCITY celebrates diverse sexualities and genders recognizing difference and exploring this through a program of queer cultural activity. I would like people and Festival patrons to consider how diverse our community is and how diverse they would like it to be.

I am especially excited about the breadth of the 2008 program including a new take on the popular Feast Forums Program. Quench; to satisfy a thirst is a world first bringing together more than 50 activists, artists, researchers, writers, filmmakers, performers, idealists, realists, dreamers' radicals and visionaries over two days at Higher Ground and Caos Cafe. Quench is a weekend of queer thinking offering 36 presentations across topics such as love, community, history and research, family politics gender, wellbeing and the arts.

Feast Special Events include the 15 November opening night Pride March through the city streets followed by the Feast Opening Party at the Adelaide University Barr Smith Lawns and Cloisters.

Feast will co-present two other special events for 2008: Private Lives and Upstart Alley. Private Lives presented by Feast and Stone/Castro Productions takes audience members on a one on one journey into the private lives of six Adelaide people. Each audience member will travel throughout the city meeting six different characters in various locations from hotel rooms to alleyways, cars to restaurants and share their desires, frustrations, paranoias and fantasies. With only 90 tickets available for the entire season running over 9 performances from 17 to 26 November patrons become nightly voyeurs, witnesses, and confidants.

Upstart Alley at Higher Ground on 21 November is a night of gender bending cabaret performances by Astro (Melb.) and Wife (Syd.) with music, sideshow entertainment by Berlin's electro punk Team Plastique and the rockabilly tunes of Ikochi from Japan. This event brings together some of the most cutting edge queer performers creating work today.

Feast's first interactive visual arts event pARTy inspired by Andy Warhol's Factory and Melbourne's midsumma festival takes place on 23 November at 151 and 153 Hindley Street. Supplied with white overalls pARTy goers will transform two white Hindley Street shops into an art installation painting walls, found objects (supplied by 'that's not garbage') and themselves, to become a queer canvas of diversCITY. Combined with cocktails and a DJ line-up this promises to be an art skirmish not to miss.

The Feast Live Performance Program will be one of the largest presented and highlights include:

Blowing Whistles, the hit of the London Pride Festival and a sell-out Mardi Gras success in Sydney in 2008.

Queer, Gifted and Blak 2 a one-off performance event celebrating the artistic strengths of South Australia's Queer Indigenous community as a diverse group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their friends perform a wild selection of music, dance and performance art.

Regina vs Contemporary Art (Spain/Portugal) is an exploration of contemporary art, a performance piece by Madrid transvestite Regina Fez and Dr Ribeiro, which spirals into a sadomasochistic battle of perversions where nothing is sacred, questioning truth, terrorism and sexual liberty.

I Am Glace Chase (NSW) Ex-child star, peace activist and saviour Glace Chase unleashes his razor sharp insights on the modern condition.

Yana Alana and The Paranas in Bite Me was a hit at Melbourne's midsumma festival and this year's Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Sarah Ward from Sista She is back-backed by her very hot lady band to present a wild journey through burlesque, dance, song and poetry and ventriloquism. Directed by Anni Davey from Circus Oz.

Comedy Gayla was sell-out success at Feast 07 and returns with double the laughs over two nights on 20 and 27 November at the Higher Ground Theatre. Hosted by Lori Bell the Comedy Gayla brings together a top line of overseas, national queer and local stand-ups including; Lea Delaria (USA), Julie McNamara (UK), Philip Patston (NZ) Brayden (aka Selina Jenkins) (Vic) Monica Dullard (Vic), Glace Chase (NSW), Helen Child (WA) and Adelaide Andrea O'Shea, Hans and Whitney Oates. The line up will vary on each night.

Thr3e Feats is a twisted triple bill of vaudeville and circus with performers from Queer F**ckers Circus, Candy Stripe Circus, Switch and Polytoxic. Thr3e Feats brings together three pioneering duos from Australia's queer circus fraternity to takes audiences to the edge of theatre, dance music and installation art.

Feast 2008 sees the return of Mega Drag a curated night of drag decadence showcasing the talents of South Australia's drag community.

Feast's Just a Nibble program enables artists to test out their work in front of an audience with the plan to further develop the work for future festivals. Just a Nibble 2008 highlights are Steak and Chelsea out to Lunch! with Derby and Joan Directed by Paulo Castro and presented by Feast and No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability. Like It Is will share with audiences the results of an artistic investigation exploring Adelaidian's levels of acceptance of diverse sexualities.

Also not to be missed is the insanely fun retrospective of Australian Queer Theater - Erect on Stage at Higher Ground on 24th November, a one night only presentation with some of Adelaide's most exciting young actors.

Feast's Literature Program is one of the largest ever presented. Presented in partnership with Wakefield Press and Imprints Books. The program comprises of five events including Savour - an evening with Dorothy Porter and Relish - in which ten writers including Christos Tsiolkas (Head On) read and discuss their work.

Daz Chandler - Daniel Kitson

August 25th 2008 05:47

Quite a good deal of out and out fun from hostess with the mostess; I like to call her Dazzle, but really it's Daz Chandler doing her usual wonderful best interviewing a comedian notorious for being difficult to interview.

Notice he (Daniel Kitson) is delightedly streaming out all sorts of insightful insights into himself as a natural chap rather than living up to the oft uber serious reports that suggest he hates being interviewed.

Great work!!

More of Daz Chandler's work can be heard by going to the podcasts at Sydney's 2SER FM, one of the greater sized and resourced community radio stations in New South Wales, Australia.
