GEN Y SONGSTRESS ANIKIKO RESONATES WITH A FUSION OF SEXY SOUNDS

Giving Bjork and Portishead a run for their money, the quirky and sensuous AniKiko launches her new EP ‘Soul Naked Before You’.

Aussie-Czech vocalist AniKiko is one to watch. Compared to Beth Gibbons, the leading lady of Portishead, AniKiko is making a name for herself as the next big thing on Australia’s alternate music scene. Ignore this and you may soon be kicking yourself – this is one singer/songwriter that you’ll soon be hearing about regularly.

Catch her before she goes stellar, at her latest EP launch, at Notes in Newtown, on Thursday April 8 (from 8:30pm with supports James Englund and Ali Mireskandari, $20 including a special edition EP).

Influenced by jazz greats and electronic pioneers, AniKiko effortlessly pushes boundaries with her genre-bending style and luscious performance. “AniKiko is the ‘new’ Portishead of the Y Generation...a crossover of all the best elements of jazz, folk and downbeats” says Departure Lounge, 2SER.

It’s difficult to categorise AniKiko’s music into one neat pigeonhole. Inspired by musical greats of many eras and genres, her sound is at once mellow yet edgy, uplifting yet calming, sexy yet coy. Her voice takes you on a journey of which you have no choice but be carried along; not that you wouldn’t want to be.

She can change a mood in a moment simply by altering the pitch of her soothing and honest voice, which always seems to rise above the emotive instrumentals that accompany it.

AniKiko comes straight from recent gigs at prestigious Japan Music Week in Tokyo, and a club tour of Prague, (Czech Republic). With the haunting quality of Portishead, soul of Billie Holiday, passion of Arethra Franklin, romance of Jeff Buckley, beats of the Presets, and quirkiness of Bjork; AniKiko’s unique sound is mesmerising.

No wallflower, AniKiko takes over her performance space, cheekily interacting with the audience and captivating the attention of every person in the room. Said to have a healing quality, her music and lyrics open doors by transporting the listener out of the everyday.

AniKiko has performed Peats Ridge (2007, 2008), Bondi Winter and Summer Festivals, International Harmony Film Festival, and is a regular at Sydney’s Zeta Bar, Opera Bar, The Ivy and Hemmesphere Bar. She has featured on numerous compilation releases including Opera Bar, Artichoke Café, Bondi Music Festival Artists, and Mars Hill Café.

AniKiko will perform a variety of new works from ‘Soul Naked Before You’, as well as stunning tracks from her previous releases, Like No Other and Opening. Accompanied by a double-bassist, drummer, violinist and the trumpet stylings of AniKiko’s father, (Czech revolutionary poet and musician) Jiri Neradilek, AniKiko’s velvet voice and sensuous show will deliver a night to remember at Notes this April.

Where: Notes – 73-75 Enmore Road, Newtown |When: 8:30pm Thursday April 8| Price: $20 – tickets available on door or presale INCLUDES SPECIAL EDITION COPY OF EP

The voice of AniKiko has been described as “the new Portishead of the Y Generation”. Raw, rare and full of flavour, AniKiko enchants with lyrics and a sound that is remembered by your body and registered in your soul.”

Performing throughout Sydney, Europe and Japan, AniKiko’s sound has a sassy and playful edge; her performance and music “wraps you up in silk and drapes the sound of velvet right through your ears”, “leaves chills, chuckles and even tears”. “It’s absolutely captivating!”, as reported by audiences throughout.
AniKiko’s background is in holistic medicine, having practised and taught kinesiology for all of her career life.

She discovered the power voice and music have on healing, especially the power of her own voice and music. Since then, her focus has been all about sound and music, singing, writing and producing.

SUPPORTING ACTS

Songwriter and Producer James Englund has packed out popular Sydney venues, festivals and supported The John Butler Trio”. His show is captivating and engaging with a songwriting talent that is not easily forgotten.

Ali Mireskandari will leave your soul in shivers. His Persian style of vocal gymnastics leave your mind arrested in every moment. Selling out at the Factory theatre and Sydney festivals, Ali Mireskandari embraces a haunting presence.
