NEIL YOUNG AT THE BIG DAY OUT

November 18th 2008 11:17
90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN: NEIL YOUNG AT THE BIG DAY OUT

NEIL YOUNG at BIG DAY OUT? You better believe it. From the festival that brought you the likes of Iggy Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and Nick Cave. In 2009, BIG DAY OUT presents legendary guitarist and songwriter NEIL YOUNG –Anti-war protestor. Hall of Famer. Environmental crusader. Instantly recognisable vocalist. Father. Social activist. Filmmaker. Godfather of Grunge. Oscar-nominated songwriter. Crazy Horse. Buffalo Springfield. Crosby, Stills, Nash and…

YOUNG’s 90-minute BIG DAY OUT sets around the nation will crackle into life at 8.30pm on the main stage and are guaranteed to be full of classics. His electric band features long-time cohort and pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith, bassist Rick Rosas, drummer Chad Cromwell, guitarist Anthony Crawford and singer/guitarist (and wife) Pegi Young.

For a taste of what you’re in for, check out this hit-heavy setlist YOUNG played at Denmark’s Roskilde festival earlier this year: Love and Only Love; Hey Hey, My My; Powderfinger; Spirit Road; Cinnamon Girl; All Along the Watchtower; Oh, Lonesome Me; Mother Earth; The Needle and the Damage Done; Unknown Legend; Heart of Gold; Old Man; Get Back to the Country; Words; No Hidden Path; A Day in the Life.

Reviews from YOUNG’s string of festival appearances this past European summer have singled the shows out as some of his best in years – pointing to the feelgood singalong moments, the band’s awe-inspiring rock playing and “full-on electric assault”, the moving and “simply harmonious” nature of the “quieter section” of the set, the frontman’s good mood, and the great atmosphere in the crowd.

“NEIL YOUNG is… NEIL YOUNG. How else can it be put? No one else can do this. Live, he’s the greatest, hands down. A cathartic and primal musical experience.” (Epoch Times, July 2008)

Back in the States in October, Spin witnessed this elder statesman of rock kick off his US tour by breathing “new vitality into songs more than three decades old… his set became a veritable greatest hits collection”.

It’s been five years since YOUNG last toured Down Under – and even longer since he delivered such a dream setlist for fans. Who knows when he will be back again? So whether you’ve followed him for years, or you’re in need of a rock’n’roll history lesson, NEIL YOUNG at BIG DAY OUT 2009 is a rarefied experience you can’t afford to miss.

Tickets to his Sydney and Melbourne solo shows and to the Sydney and Gold Coast BIG DAY OUTs were snapped up within hours of going on sale but if you’re quick you may still be able to experience one of the greatest rock and roll experiences of your lifetime at one of the following shows.

RECYCLING OUR WAY TO A CLEANER HOMEBAKE!

November 18th 2008 11:08
RECYCLING OUR WAY TO A CLEANER HOMEBAKE!

Wow! Congratulations to all of those Homebake attendees who participated in our recycling system last year. Homebake achieved the highest rate of recycling ever recorded in its long and illustrious history.

Gabriella Cilmi

Over 115,000 aluminium cans and 8,500 PET plastic bottles were recovered for recycling into new products and resulted in an overall recycling rate of greater than 95%. An incredible effort and didn't the site look brilliant throughout the entire event.

Everyone who brought back their containers for recycling received their original deposit back meaning no one was out of pocket and the environmental benefits were huge including;

• Over 1,900 kilograms of Aluminium and Pet plastic were diverted away from landfill and captured for recycling;

• The energy saved from cans recycled at Homebake was the equivalent of running 347,000 television sets for 1 hour;

• Homebake also conserved 8.5 tonnes of Bauxite (used to make new aluminium);

•The Royal Botanic Gardens were better protected, less littered and rally looked a million bucks.

Homebake is proud to once again operate this innovating recycling system at this year's show.

So how does this recycling thing work? It is very simple really, and will not cost you a cent if you follow the 4 easy steps below (plus you will be helping to save valuable resources and the environment):

1. When you go to the bar to buy a drink served in an Aluminium or PET plastic container, included in the price of the drink is a $1.00 deposit

2. Once you have finished your drink, take your container (aluminium can or PET plastic bottle) to one of 3 recycling centres located next to each of the main bars

3. Hand over your container (or containers) to receive a drink ticket valued at $1.00 (i.e. $1.00 for each container handed back to the recycling centre staff)

4. You can then use this drink ticket to go towards part of the cost of your next drink or simply redeem your $1.00 by handing the drink ticket to the bar staff; and

5. At the end of the night, hand back your last drink container before you leave at one of the recycling centres. Take your $1.00 drink ticket and redeem it at the bar to get your original $1.00 back.

Remember the bars close at 10.30pm and the recycling centres close at 10.45pm sharp, so make sure you have redeemed any deposits before the close of the event.

Refunding your container deposit after 10.45pm is not possible.

Once again the recycling system is proudly supported by Diageo Australia.
Homebake acknowledges the good folk at Diageo for their invaluable assistance helping us to put this recycling initiative together!

DIFRNT SIGNS REGULAR JOHN

November 18th 2008 10:56
DIFRNT LAUNCHES A NEW MODEL / WEBSITE AND SIGNS REGULAR JOHN

Want something Difrnt ? Want Difrnt Idea's ?

Sick of the tired old industry model that clearly isn't working anymore and need a Difrnt outlook for your musical needs?

Then the answer is simple. That's Difrnt World !!!!!

Regular John

Difrnt World is one of the first Entertainment based companies in Australia to provide a successful and complete service from Recording, Publishing and Merchandise and have now added a new Events/Publicity and Management division.

Difrnt Music the label, was forged by Australia's Premier prog rock pioneer's Cog, who's second album "Sharing Space" debut #2 on the national ARIA charts and was nominated this year for Triple J's Album of the year. Since the birth of the new world, Difrnt has recruited Nik Tropiano from indie Punk Rock Label Chatterbox Records into its ranks. Difrnt World now has a clear agenda. That is not to follow any trends and to create a new mark in the world of Rock n Roll.

Difrnt is proud to announce the next band to join their stable, the extremely unique and noisy Regular John.

"This band is young, loud and snotty. They have something to say which has been long missing in current music trends".

Forming in rural NSW they used the isolation to their advantage, developing their own unique brand of high energy, punk-fuzz rock combining it with elements of noise, prog and psychedelia. Unlike most groups today, Regular John actually have something to say, they can see through bullshit and they aren't afraid to speak their minds, to stand up for what they believe in, a rare trait in today's play-it-safe musical climate. Album is currently being recorded and is scheduled for an April 2009 release.

Also launched is the new website, Difrntworld.com, which is the perfect insight into the unique and enthralling universe that is Difrnt. The interactive site doesn't just offer giveaways, prizes, artist information, great music and a clear description of exactly what it is that Difrnt does, but enables you to become a part of a great musical community.

Prepare to be DIFRNT

homosexuality

Global fight to eliminate laws criminalizing homosexuality. How your support can help IGLHRC ensure equal rights for LGBT people worldwide.

Just three weeks ago, two prominent trans/gay activists in Uganda were arrested, beaten with batons, and held in jail for a week without bail or access to a lawyer. Their crimes? "Spreading homosexuality" - a crime that does not exist - and carnal knowledge against the order of nature - a crime that they were not engaged in at the time of arrest. In many parts of the world, sodomy laws are still fully enforced, giving the government unbridled power to frighten and silence lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities
