September 1st 2010 06:59
POWDERFINGER
Last Ever Performance Available Exclusively on iTunes

Today pre-orders of Powderfinger’s last ever performance are available exclusively on the Australian iTunes store.

The live recording of their final show on 13 November at the Riverstage in Brisbane, will be available on iTunes approximately twelve hours after the curtain drops on the bands remarkable career.

Over 290,000 tickets have already been sold across 35 shows in 21 different cities on the colossal tour, resulting in a whopping 24 sold out dates so far! With only a handful of shows around the country still having tickets available, it seems that many unlucky fans missed out on their opportunity to farewell this iconic Aussie band. But while the sun is indeed setting, there are still a few rays of sunshine on the horizon. Powderfinger has recently released additional tickets to their sold out shows at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne (10 & 11 September) and Supreme Court Gardens, Perth (22 & 23 September). The ‘Sunsets Tour’ kicks off in Newcastle today.

BRITTLE ANNOUNCE "THE OWLS" EP & NATIONAL TOUR

There's nothing more that Melbourne alternative rockers BRITTLE want to do but to capture their dynamic live sound and energy in their recordings and that's exactly what they've achieved with legendary producer Mark Opitz at the helm on the band's new five-track EP titled "The Owls" which will be unleashed on June 14 as a free digital download.

The EP will be backed by a massive tour of the same name that will see the band visiting all capital cities in June, July and August as well as a host of major regional centres around the country. It will be their largest Australian tour since the release of their debut EP 'Chinese Whispers' in 2008.

With his work producing landmark albums for artists including INXS, The Divinyls, The Angels, Cold Chisel, KISS and Ray Charles, Mark Opitz's impressive history is a good indication as to the quality you can expect from Brittle's "The Owls".

"It was a massive learning curve for us as a band," said Brittle lead vocalist Ben "Tokyo" Whiting. "That guy knows a lot and he taught us so much during our time working with him. He really made sure we got our 'live' sound on the EP and most importantly helped us work towards creating our own unique sound for the five tracks".

Having supported artists including Faker, Kisschasy, Snow Patrol, Grinspoon, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Something With Numbers, and more recently Katy Perry, Brittle make their dynamic set seem effortless and really know how to put on a show. "We are a band that is driven by playing live," says Whiting. "If you like our band you MUST see us live!!"

Brittle
"Brittle are the type of band that you really look forward to seeing, and they never let you down," said Rock website FasterLouder.com.au, describing Whiting's vocals as "virtually flawless". "Regardless of whether or not you were familiar with the songs, the band captivated the crowd. It is clear that we will be seeing big things from them in the not too distant future" they added.

Brittle's live show isn't the only thing buzzing, they are also making headway in the international music industry, having been described as "one of the bands to watch" by Music Week UK & Insider Magazine, as well as being listed as a "buzz band" by The Music Network in Australia.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT
Returns for a very special solo evening at the
Sydney Opera House

“The greatest songwriter on the planet.”
Elton John

“Rufus stands next to Nina Simone.”
Michael Stipe

“One of the most talented singer-songwriters of his generation.”
Bernard Zuel, Sydney Morning Herald

Fans of wonderfully intimate music take note: the one and only Rufus Wainwright is returning to the Sydney Opera House for one very special evening featuring our prodigious wunderkind in solo piano and vocal mode.

The evening in question is Thursday October 14, 2010 at the Concert Hall within the Sydney Opera House.

As supporters of Rufus will know, this concert is a special thank you to his loyal and understanding Australian fans who had bought tickets expecting to see Rufus perform solo in February 2010 at Sydney’s Verbrugghen Hall.

That show and surrounding performances were regrettably cancelled due to a family illness earlier this year, but Rufus made a promise to return to Australia later in 2010.

The passing away of his mother and “greatest admirer and critic”, legendary folksinger Kate McGarrigle, in January this year, and the enduring admiration for his sister, folk-rocker Martha Wainwright, are themes that pervade much of Rufus Wainwright's breathtaking sixth studio album: All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu.

This is an album steeped in beauty, with hugely personal and deeply emotional songs, each channeled through Wainwright via only his fingers, voice and piano. A perfect precursor then for this hugely anticipated Australian solo concert and upcoming tour.

Of his latest offering to fans, Rufus last week said “Though it may appear at the outset that my new album and show are quite dark, don't be alarmed, I'm no fool and will always make sure to ensure a well rounded evening: be prepared to laugh as well as cry your little eyes out.”

Reactions from fans and critics alike have been universally positive.

About All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, Q Magazine has said, “It’s a flabbergasting, intense album that demands intense listening.” While All Music Guide agreed the record is “a bold, absolutely emotionally naked statement that retains Wainwright’s devastating talent for artful, universally compelling songcraft.”

Do not delay in securing your tickets for this very special concert. As we said earlier this year – if the 2008 Rufus Wainwright Australian tour is anything to go by – his return in 2010 will no doubt be the absolute musical highlight of your calendar year!

The Temper Trap 2010 TOUR

May 7th 2010 14:22
THE TEMPER TRAP
DEBUT ALBUM CONDITIONS REACHES PLATINUM!

Whilst it may come as no surprise to the Australian music loving public, it is with great pride and delight that The Temper Trap announce their debut album Conditions as having achieved platinum sales in Australia.

The widely acclaimed album spawned multiple hit singles, including Platinum single ‘Sweet Disposition’ and ‘Love Lost’ - both of which are currently in the ARIA Top 40. It debuted at Number 9 in the ARIA Top 50 Albums chart and is still currently in the Top 20 after forty five weeks on the chart.

The Temper Trap recently performed at the illustrious Coachella music festival in California, drawing a massive crowd and captivating the audience with ease and charm.

The band has also been confirmed to play at additional U.S. festival heavyweights Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, U.K. based Glastonbury and our very own Splendour in the Grass and are currently on tour across Europe and North America. Their recent and upcoming tour dates are all testament to their rapidly growing reputation as mesmerising live performers.

This July sees them returning to our shores for a tour of Australia & New Zealand and local fans and critics can’t hardly wait.

Often called 'The Ones to Watch,' Welsh three piece band The Joy Formidable are bringing their dreamy sound to The Temper Trap's Australian tour along with AMP Red Bull Award winners Oh Mercy. The Auckland performance will be opened by New Zealand natives The Naked and Famous.

The Temper Trap's Perth, Melbourne and Sydney shows have sold out and whilst tickets to their Adelaide and Auckland performances are still available now, these shows are sure to follow suit.

THE TEMPER TRAP
RETURN TO AUSTRALIA & NZ FOR JULY 2010 HEADLINE TOUR

At the start of this year The Temper Trap gave Australian and New Zealand audiences a taste of why they were one of the most talked about bands in the world last year with standout performances across a series of summer festivals. Fans clamoured for more and the band paid attention, making room in a hectic worldwide tour for July 2010 dates in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland.

2010 is already shaping up to be a busy one, with The Temper Trap currently on tour across America. Conditions is sitting at #4 on the Billboard Heatseeker chart, while some of the biggest radio stations in the USA have set Sweet Disposition to high rotation. The buzz around the band is audible with a sold out six week US tour and appearances at SXSW, Coachella and Bonnaroo sure to earn the band even more supporters. Notably US music industry bible Billboard Magazine profiled the band in a double page ‘Happening Now’ feature in their February 20 issue, noting “The Temper Trap are shaping up to be the next big thing from Down Under.”

The UK story also continues to grow from their Top Ten hit with Sweet Disposition last year, with the band selling over 33,000 tickets to their UK tour, including an impressive three nights at Shepherds Bush Empire. The band are also headlining the Wireless Festival, as well as performing at T In The Park and Roskilde festivals.

Worldwide sales of Sweet Disposition have now exceeded 500,000, while album sales for Conditions have tipped over the 300,000 mark.

If The Temper Trap’s festival performances were mass sing-a-longs, then these July shows are set to take The Temper Trap to a whole new level with four acclaimed singles now under the band’s belts. Soaring Platinum hit Sweet Disposition, rocking tracks Science of Fear and Fader and the latest anthemic offering Love Lost are sure crowd favourites, while album Conditions has become a staple on iPods and radios across both countries.

With their album fast approaching Platinum sales in Australia there’s little doubt that The Temper Trap have won the hearts of music fans. Significantly though, the band have delivered more than just a standout debut album, with music critics praising the quality and energy of the band’s live performances.

“The Temper Trap execute their set perfectly…” J Mag, Australia, Feb 2010

““Sweet Disposition”…had the crowd swaying in unison and singing along” Undertherader.co.nz, New Zealand, Jan 15, 2010

“When the band broke into their signature hit Sweet Disposition the sardined mass roared and jumped up and down despite the searing heat.” Daily Telegraph, Sydney, Jan 23, 2010
“Album stand-outs Fader, Love Lost, Down River, Science of Fear and Sweet Disposition were all monster singalongs.” The Age, Melbourne, Jan 08, 2010

“The Temper Trap kicked off the day with a bang…[the band] have the energy and skill of bands with twice the stage experience.” 3 News, New Zealand, Jan 15, 2010

“Every year one band is too popular for the stage they’re on. This year it was Melbourne’s The Temper Trap…the reaction to British Top 10 hit Sweet Disposition was one of the first moments of the day, but most tracks from their debut album Conditions were singalongs including the stunning Love Lost.” Herald Sun, Melbourne, Jan 27, 2010

There’s little doubt that The Temper Trap’s upcoming July concerts are going to be must-sees on the 2010 concert calendar. Tickets for Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland go on sale on Monday 29 March at 9am local time.

Pre-sale tickets will be available via frontiertouring.com from noon AEDT Thursday 25 March to noon AEDT Friday 26 March.

Australian ticket buyers through Ticketek and Ticketmaster will also have the opportunity to purchase Conditions at a special discounted price at the time of ticket purchase.

Gyroscope ‘COHESION’

April 19th 2010 03:13
‘COHESION’ DEBUTS AT #3 ON ARIA ALBUM CHART ‘COHESION’ NATIONAL TOUR - JUNE 2010

COHESION:
- noun 1. The act or state of cohering, uniting, or sticking together.

Gyroscope has solidified their position as one of Australia’s premiere rock acts as their fourth studio album, Cohesion debuted at #3 on the ARIA album chart. The album also reached the #1 position on the iTunes album chart.

Rarely has an album title ever rung as true as this most recent offering from Perth rock stalwarts Gyroscope. It was with this spirit in mind and heart that Gyroscope embarked on their most thrilling and all encompassing musical journey to date. No mean feat once it’s taken into account that Gyroscope has been stomping stages as a unit for more than a decade. With their fourth album Cohesion, Gyroscope finally translate the famed rawness of their live show into a recorded, tangible tour de force.

Having packed rooms on their whirlwind and very noisy ‘Some of the Places I Know’ tour throughout March, Gyroscope is now preparing to take things up a notch, on June’s Cohesion Tour. Audiences all over the country are now invited to participate in the collaborative effort that Cohesion has come to represent. To celebrate the release of this rock’n’roll opus, Gyroscope will be shaking up some of the largest and most beautiful venues they have ever been fortunate enough to tread the boards in.

Upon the release of Cohesion on Island Records, both fans and media alike added to the swell of excitement surrounding this much anticipated record. Add to this concoction the fact that the sultry swell of first single ‘Some of the Places I Know’ has been tearing up radio this past month and this tour becomes a thrilling prospect indeed. These dates will see Gyroscope performing not only their tried and true crowd pleasing favourites, but also a hefty helping of selections from Cohesion, a few of them for the very first time.

In true Gyroscope form, true Gyroscope enthusiasts have an opportunity to become a part of the action in advance of the general public. Fans need simply head to www.gyroscope.com.au and sign up to the Gyroscope mailing list before 5.00pm on Wednesday 21st April to take part in a dedicated ticket pre-sale. Participants will be emailed a special code word to take advantage of this excusive mailing list only offer.

The force of Gyroscope live is truly something to be reckoned with; there are few that would dispute this. Years spent ramping it up for audiences from Broome to Bathurst has left Gyroscope brandishing their edgy, unpredictable live show with a seldom matched sense of pride and unity. Drum Media but recently remarked in raptures “this band plays a world class rock show that is only getting better with age.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Cohesion is one of the strongest records of Gyroscope’s career & is undoubtedly destined to be one of the biggest Australian releases of 2010. Produced by the legendary Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, The Pixies, Eskimo Joe) in Rockfield Wales, the recording of Cohesion has been one of the most rewarding experiences of Gyroscope’s journey. With the result of wonderful shades of light and dark, and of pounding energy and delicate emotion, COHESION, is an album demanding to pick up where 2008’s ARIA #1 album ‘Breed Obsession’ left off. ‘Some Of the Places I Know’ presents a killer hook and honesty, while laced with infectious energy and enthusiasm – a reflection of the band’s studio time.

It’s no time to pretend.

PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY

April 11th 2010 10:23

PHILADELPHIA GRAND JURY ANNOUNCE
NEW SINGLE,
HEADLINE TOUR & MOVE TO THE UK

Fresh from the Laneway Festival tour Philadelphia Grand Jury announce a headline tour and new track from last year’s J Award nominated debut, Hope is For Hopers.

The new radio single 'I Don't Want To Party (Party)' is an anti-party slacker anthem that in its utter catchiness has a habit of inciting exactly the opposite to what it says in the title. The track is a live favourite and was for a long time used as the set closer which sees the band finish each set with a literal bang - one time even seeing lead singer Berkfinger taking to an upright piano with a sledgehammer.

The single is joined by three exclusive never-heard-before tracks.

B-side number one is a disco remix of Philadelphia Grand Jury album track 'Wet Winter Holiday' by Mike FWD. The next is a solo track by band lead singer and producer Berkfinger called 'Jimmy At The Whorehouse' which is the first cut off a self-produced solo concept album due out later in the year on the band's own label Normal People Making Hits.

And in the spirit of this eclectic package the fourth addition to the single is really one for the fans. It is a hip-hop funk jam called ‘Both Kinds Of Music’ written, sung and produced by the band's new drummer Calvin. After having rotating drummers the past 12 months, the band has now cemented its line up. Calvin (yep, just Calvin) is a 56 year-old African American drummer who used to session drum for US disco and funk acts like Earth Wind and Fire and bebop legend Sonny Stitt. This track is a gem. You heard it here first.

To support the single Philadelphia Grand Jury will be hitting the road throughout April for what will be their final Australian shows for the foreseeable future. The band will re-locate to the UK where they have a deal with super cool London based Beggar's label Too Pure and a series of club shows leading into the Northern Summer.

The ‘I Don’t Want To Party (Party)’ single package is released to iTunes.

Vale | LOW TRANSIT INDUSTRIES

April 8th 2010 13:24
LOW TRANSIT INDUSTRIES

Website: LOW TRANSIT INDUSTRIES

They Must Say Goodnight…

News to hand from LTI the dudes who have been bringing it, are winding down. They've sent out this release.

Hello to all reading this…

7 years ago three guys from a little Melbourne band decided to help out some friends and a couple of overseas acts looking for a release in Australia & Low Transit Industries was born. We started with the Singles Club Split 7 Inch Collective and The Essex Green from Brooklyn as our first non-personal releases & found a taste for helping artists find their place in the musical community. Over the next two years myself & Simon found ourselves at a point where we were doing pretty good for a couple of guys that didn’t know what the hell to do with a record let alone run a label, & found ourselves loving the work we were doing with our artists building a fondness for our dedication & passion.

Over the first 5 years we found ourselves enveloped in micro-management, touring, record releases, marketing, event management, syncronisation… well, whatever it took to get our artists out & in the face of the general public and media. We always stuck by the non-commercial ideology of the independent label & worked tirelessly to promote artists we felt needed a voice in this world irregardless of the hurdles in front of us. We had some great successes & some massive failures like all arts businesses, but we still found a good reason to keep the business going each year though… alas, it has become too difficult for us to make this label viable for us, our business partners & our artists so we’re bowing out on a high note with the release of Kim Salmon & The Surrealists first LP in over a decade & Chicago based band Sonoi’s debut record.

We have loved all our artists equally over our time but feel these two are the last stand for us in this incarnation. I remember being blown away by Kim Salmon & The Surrealists back in Geelong when they supported the Hoodoo Gurus at The Lyric Nightclub back in the mid-90’s. They were rock ‘n’ roll that surpassed the commercial richness of the Hoodoo’s with their brash, rough emotional rock. I remember standing there thinking “wow, these guys are fucking amazing… why aren’t more of these people into these guys!!” I wanted to make them understand what I saw in them. Then there is Sonoi which features members of Manishevitz. We discussed releasing Manishevitz via Jagjaguwar back when we first started but couldn’t do the record at the time…. I have been a massive fan of the band for years & when we got the option to work with their new project we couldn’t say no. They are the epitome of independent music. Vibrant, beautiful, odd & totally compelling. These are the reasons we started this label & the reason why we have been musicians and in the business for 20 years. We wanted people to hear what we loved in the music we loved.

Over the past couple of years the industry has become increasing difficult to work in for many reasons. Retail buckling under the issue of downloading & the ability to produce more product cheaper and easier, making a flooded & diluted market. World financial issues... without boring you all & to put it bluntly, there wasn’t much money in music before & there definitely is a lot less now. To combat this we have been pushing forward to start representing artists worldwide so we can keep on working with the sorts of bands we love rather than licensing product we know will sell in singular territories. I know this isn’t necessarily the best business model for a little Australian based label but we felt it important to maintain our ideals & push forward into new markets. The move has been going well & we were happy with the progress until we lost funding from our main financier in Australia making it impossible for us to continue under the current set-up. This has forced us to make a decision that we didn’t want to make. We took this situation as a good time to re-evaluate our position with the business and have to decided to cease releasing records under the name Low Transit Industries. All currently available titles will remain available while stock lasts & records slated for release with stock manufactured will be serviced fully & on an ongoing basis.

So what’s to happen to us? Simon is still working in construction & being a cad about town like he always has been. Darren is moving to the UK with his wife & will be working in music over there. We’d like to thank all the people at our distributors over the years in particular Chandra Tobey & James Agren from Darla. Inertia deserve a massive thanks also, being the main company that helped push our little machine to the small heights we reached. All the media peeps around the world that have supported our releases. Thanks to all the great labels we have worked with including Jagjaguwar, Thrill Jockey, Truck… you’re all an inspiration. Thanks to Aaron Cuthbert for for all his hard work while he was partner in the business… we’d also like to thank Natalie Crupi who was our first publicist, Danny Griffith who was our first intern & Adam Green who will be officially our last. We’d like to say a special thanks to Julia Smallman & both our families. We’d like to apologise to Matt Banham, The Super Wolfgang, We All want To, Midget & Warped for not being able to release their amazing records & thank you to our inspiration, our bands: Aviator Lane, The Backfeed Slumber, Batrider, Black Mountain, Black Nielson, Boddicker, The Ca$inos, Co-Pilgrim, The Delicates, Dishpan Fingers, Elf Power, The Essex Green, Simon Llewelyn Evans, Finishing School, Fonda 500, Fotomoto, Ghosty, Goldrush, Sam Isaac, Jacob S. Harris, Jape Squad, Legends Of Motorsport, Lilys, Line Drawings, Shannon McArdle, Margins, The Mendoza Line, New Estate, New Pants, No Through Road, Sime Nugent, Of Montreal, Okkervil River, Oneironaut, Pink Mountaintops, Russian Roulettes, Sailboats Are White, Kim Salmon & The Surrealists, Screamfeeder, Season, Sharko, Souls On Board, The Steinbecks, C.W. Stoneking, SubAudible Hum, Sonoi, The Sound Platform, The Specimens, Tim Steward, TimeZones, Trans Am, Tucker B's, Warped, We All Want To, The Wells Collective, THE WHATS & Thalia Zedek Band… Singles Club Split 7" Collective: Alma, The Bites, Black Nielson, Disaster Plan, The Essex Green, Homescience, Ill Bravados, The Ladybug Transistor, The Loch Ness Mouse, Mid State Orange, The Minders, Papermoon, The Parkas, Royal City, Serena Maneesh, The Smallgoods, Sneeze & The Zebras.

Thanks for all your support over the years, please keep an eye on what we’re up to as well as our artists & we’ll see you at the bar. It’s been a fun & exciting 7 years but it’s time to say goodnight...

Cheers, Darren Smallman & Simon Baird.

ZULYA 29 date National Tour

March 30th 2010 14:14
ZULYA
announces new album Tales Of Subliming
plus 29 date national tour

"Wonderful spirited musician and definately a one of a kind singer" David Jobling, Sound Pet

"Kamalova's rich, emotive vocals shine." The Age

"an astonishing singer." Canberra Times

"one of the country's most enthralling performers and songwriters." The Australian

"The sort of music that feels like it could grind the planet to a halt with sheer force of beauty." Inpress

Unstable Ape Records is proud to announce the release of Zulya's sixth album Tales of Subliming.

Zulya, originally from Tatarstan in central Russia, is familiar to audiences throughout Australia as a multi-award winning performer of traditional and original music derived from her Tatar and Russian cultural roots.

Tales of Subliming is the long-awaited follow up to 2007's runaway success 3 Nights, which not only was decorated with an ARIA award for best World Music Album, but also dominated the European World Music Charts for much of that year - finishing inside the top 10 for their end of year chart.

LISTEN TO:
THE SUBLIMING OF THE SNOW-MAIDEN (MP3)

Returning to the concept album format, Tales of Subliming finds Zulya using the fairytales of her heritage as the platform for her songwriting. She explains, "Subliming has two meanings; turning from a solid into a gas instantaneously - like dry ice, or becoming finer, purer. There’s often a transformation in fairy stories. They are about our journeys to achieve individuality in a symbolic form. Some say each of us identifies with our own fairy story or with a character from one. Tales of Subliming is a collection of vignettes from these characters’ lives, little scenes from their journeys.”

As with 3 Nights, the new album is a collection of songs written in all 3 of her spoken languages (Russian, Tatar, and English) – her ease with English now apparent with 7 of the 12 tracks in her adopted tongue.

The release of the new album coincides with a full 29 date national tour organised by Kultour

James Keelaghan 2010 Australian Tour

March 29th 2010 03:38
James Keelaghan
HOUSE OF CARDS
2010 Australian Tour

Renowned Canadian performer James Keelaghan returns to Australia, touring to promote his latest album the critically acclaimed House of Cards. 10 new originals, some of them co-written with folk luminaries David Francey, Karine Polwart and Rose Cousins, make it one of his best yet.

James Keelaghan
For almost a quarter of a century, this Canadian poet laureate of the folk and roots music world has gone about his work with a combination of passion, intent and intensity, and curiosity.

House of Cards showcases Keelaghan's great assets, solid guitar playing, a voice unmatched and instantly recognizable, and lyrical excellence.

House Of Cards James Keelaghan
Keelaghan says “I was at the Celtic Colors Festival in 2008 and the producers locked six of us in a house for a week, and the company included Dave Gunning, David Francey, and Rose Cousins, it was an amazing experience.”

Armed with a songbook that has enlightened and enthralled audiences worldwide, Keelaghan’s life as an artist is one that is a perpetual journey on many levels.

It’s a journey that has invited fans of literate, layered songwriting to be a part of his artistic expeditions, some that weave their way through marvellously etched stories of a historical nature, to songs based on social commentary and others that mine the depths of the soul and the emotional trails of human relations.

Folk music is all about the stories, and Keelaghan’s masterful storytelling (he has a degree in History and is also a skilled thespian) has been part of the bedrock of his success, earning him many nominations and awards - including a Juno (Canada's ARIA).

Possessed of an insatiable appetite for finding the next unique story line, Keelaghan forges his pieces with brilliant craftsmanship and monogrammed artistic vision, making him one of the most distinctive and readily identifiable voices on both the Canadian and international singer-songwriter scenes.
