SNOWTOWN

The debut feature film of director Justin Kurzel and producers Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw for WARP FILMS AUSTRALIA, launches its full-length trailer and key art work today.

SNOWTOWN

The film was the hot topic of conversation at the 2011 BigPond Adelaide Film Festival where it won the Audience Award for Best Feature.

The feedback from the screenings has been glowing:

‘One of the greatest and most extraordinary Australian films ever made.’ Peter Goers, ADELAIDE SUNDAY MAIL

‘5 stars’, Rhys Howlett, ABC 891
‘The entire large cast – many of them local first-timers — are superbly believable’ Frank Hatherley, SCREEN INTERNATIONAL

‘One of the most powerful and fascinating Australian films of the year’ Andrew Fenton, ADELAIDE ADVERTISER

‘an absolutely mesmerising, uncompromising crime-movie masterpiece’ Jim Schembri, THE AGE

SNOWTOWN is a powerful psychological drama set in Adelaide’s northern suburbs and based on the real crimes of Australia’s worst serial killer, John Bunting. It explores the relationship between 16-year-old Jamie Vlassakis, who found his father figure and mentor in John Bunting. It is the examination of a community and questions how and why events such as Snowtown occur.

The eagerly anticipated film opens at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas on May 19 and stars an exciting new Australian cast including Lucas Pittaway, Daniel Henshall and Louise Harris.

LIONEL RICHIE GUY SEBASTIAN

DUET OF ALL NIGHT LONG FOR CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE &
QUEENSLAND FLOOD APPEALS

LIONEL RICHIE, GUY SEBASTIAN

A new collaboration between music legend Lionel Richie and Australia's Guy Sebastian of Lionel’s hit single All Night Long is now available for purchase and download from the iTunes store to raise funds for those affected by the Christchurch earthquakes and Queensland floods.

Grammy Award nominated producer RedOne - known as ‘the man behind Lady Gaga’ - also donated his time to the track, contributing irresistible club beats and smooth synthesizer effects to give the classic hit a modern twist and fresh new sound.

Plus, in what is set to be an unforgettable concert highlight, the two chart-topping stars will also perform the song live at all shows on their upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand starting in New Zealand on March 18.

Lionel jumped at the chance to help those in Australia and New Zealand affected by these multiple natural disasters.

“The floods and earthquakes have caused damage on a scale not seen in our lifetime. I can think of no better use for one of my most successful copyrights than to help raise needed funds for the people of Australia and New Zealand. The people of these countries have been very good to me over the course of my career and I welcome the opportunity to return the kindness.”

“Music is meant to lift the spirit of mankind. There will always be the appropriate avenue for sombre reflection on what was lost in these disasters, however, I chose All Night Long because it will give people a reason to donate and celebrate the good times ahead instead of just dwelling on the past.”

Guy Sebastian said “Being offered the tour with Lionel is a real honour but getting to record with him is truly humbling. He is a legend and ‘All Night Long’ is one of his greatest songs and biggest hits so I'm still pinching myself. I hope people get behind it and support the appeals that the money is going to.”

Lionel Richie’s original composition ‘All Night Long (All Night)’ from his second solo album Can’t Slow Down was a smash hit in the 80s. The single peaked at #1 on Billboard Pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts as well as #1 on the ARIA Singles chart.

100% of proceeds from the sale of the single in Australia will be donated to the Queensland Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal. 100% of proceeds from the sale of the single in New Zealand will be donated to the New Zealand Government Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

The single is available now to purchase and download from the iTunes stores in Australia and New Zealand.

Lionel Richie and Guy Sebastian tour Australia and New Zealand from March 18 to April 6 with tickets on sale now.

COLLARBONES

February 15th 2011 03:23
COLLARBONES
Release new single
Don Juan

Electronica duo Collarbones are back with ‘Don Juan’, the first single taken from their debut album Iconography.

Set for release on 18 March 2011 via Two Bright Lakes / Remote Control, Iconography is an assured debut, full of confidence and brimming with ideas that pull in diverse influences from the experimental to the mainstream.

Travis Cook (Cyst Impaled) and Marcus Whale (Scissor Lock) formed Collarbones over the internet in late 2007, and within a few short weeks they had committed to a long-term music-making relationship. Since then they’ve divided time between Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, playing shows with the likes of Samiyam, making mix tapes, covering Justin Bieber with great fondness and releasing the Pitchfork adored single ‘Beaman Park’ in 2010.

Iconography is an artefact of its mode of production, pieced together over the Internet. The pair shared files until instrumentals were at a point where Whale could lay down elegant RnB laden hooks over the chopped samples and digital soundscapes.

Stay tuned for album launch details!

DON JUAN [mp3 download]
First single taken from debut album Iconography

"A smooth stuttering jam..." Pitchfork

"Collarbones sure have a knack for making beautiful little monuments out of the otherwise transient noises that crisscross the ether" Mess & Noise

"Collarbones' minimalistic approach fits somewhere in sound between Yeasayer and Fuck Buttons, being two-man project covered in laptops and sample decks" Drum Media Sydney

"Warm beats, chiming effects and soulful vocal harmonies" Inpress, Time Off, Drum Media Sydney

"Collarbones is an Aussie electronic-experimental duo that understands how to sprinkle sunshine and good summer vibes through the use of chopped up and sampled vocals that would make Dam-Funk proud” Asian Man Dan

Collarbones - Iconography will be released on 18 March 2011 via Two Bright Lakes / Remote Control

ED KUEPPER (WITH MARK DAWSON)
PLAY THE CLASSICS

With a recent run of sold-out solo shows under his belt, Ed Kuepper is pleased to announce a March tour this time featuring his former sparring-partner Mark Dawson (on drums) as they re-imagine the Kuepper classics: Electrical Storm and Today Wonder.

Electrical Storm was Kuepper’s first solo album recorded in early 1985 shortly after the dissolution of Laughing Clowns. Musically a departure from his earlier bands (the original Saints and Laughing Clowns), Electrical Storm proved to be the most raw and stripped back recording of Kuepper’s long career and featured some of his most enduring songs including the title track, 'Car Headlights’ and ‘Rainy Night’. Lyrically it was more straight forward, yet with the songs seemingly interconnected, its foreboding atmosphere is lightened up with glimpses of Kuepper’s trademark humour such as the musical quote from the Spiderman cartoon show in ‘When the sweet turns sour’.

Today Wonder was the album that began Kuepper’s wrecking ball-like prolific recording stretch in the 1990s. Recorded and mixed live in the studio over two days in early 1990, it features only Kuepper on effects-laden acoustic guitar and vocals, with Mark Dawson on drums and cardboard box. Kuepper described the sound at the time as “ambient rockabilly” and stated more recently that it was the album that enabled everything after it. Today Wonder draws on a host of Kuepper’s earliest influences and incorporates them into something new and adventurous. Several covers become originals and originals become covers in a seamless blend which still sounds unique to this day.

Tickets for the Kuepper/Dawson shows are on-sale now.

Before all that, though, Kuepper will appear in solo mode as special guest to Grinderman at their Sydney & Melbourne legs of their Australian Big Day Out tour. You can never have enough Kuepper.

Summadayze

January 2nd 2011 11:16
Summadayze 2010

Sumadayze kick started the new year in Adelaide in ways I couldn’t even begin to predict. As I arrived at Rymill Park on the East end of Adelaide I was feeling quite flushed as I’d done the right thing and used my bicycle to get there. A stinking hot day on New Years Eve had left the streets pretty quiet for new years morning around my place so I set off from home, arrived in good time, locked up the bike and collected my ticket. My plus one was unable to attend, so I was collecting my ticket and doing the whole gig solo. Easy enough, I thought, to wander quietly and soak in the atmosphere. Listen up for the music that drew me towards it.

No sooner had I stepped into line, when a beautiful black police dog came and wedged its nose into my butt cheeks. For a moment there I thought I was being greeted in that way doggies say ‘hello’, and I was in a way, but this doggie was saying ‘you smell like pot’. So the police took me aside and went through all the proceedings in a polite and not overly dramatic or threatening way. I was completely astonished. I did not have any drugs on me, and was not there to score any or hook any up, ‘I’m reviewing the music, it’s not really a day off, I’m here with the purpose to remain sober so I can observe and reflect,’ I explained.

After giving my details, being searched, having my pockets examined, all of that, I was set free to wander inside; I had an apology and an explanation about the process. Evidently I could have sat somewhere and been exposed to marijuana, and I wondered how long it had been since I’d sat in any number of places where there may have been residue of bong water or pot. It’s difficult to really know under the circumstances, but because they were polite about it and I was quite clearly innocent – sure I look like an old hippy, but I also look like a wizard and a monk, a rock star, and the serial killer ‘Bob’ from ‘Twin Peaks’ but that doesn’t make me any of those things. I went and settled on the lawn by the Almost Famous stage and chilled for a while. Ajax, Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw kept the spirits up. Singing live at these gigs must be a challenge. Dust, grass seed, dry breeze, humid, all sorts of reasons why singing could be awkward. Lisa Shaw came out with her magically smooth vocal styling and hit the nail on the head. Lisa presented with her beautiful personality, warm smiling face and a truly great strength in her voice. After a few songs from her and some dubious rain starting to drop I moved around for a little walk. The rain didn’t develop as the clouds moved over and sun shone.

On the Mainstage as the crowds gathered Riva Starr was really thumping things along. I find one needs the crowd in the main area to absorb the sound. The bass was a little heavy for me while there were so few people. Later in the day it would be so packed around the area I would only observe from the bleachers. I was ultimately attracted to some of the fine rapping and the groove end of the scale. There was so much room to dance under the trippy HQ tower, I couldn’t help myself, and that’s where things started to spin out a little.

I’ve done Future Music Festival, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Big Day Out, Blues Fest, Parklife and plenty of live gigs. I guess I don’t think too much about what part of the country I’m in when I start to actually enjoy the music and dance. Here in Adelaide I guess I also stick out in a crowd like this given I’m 50 this year, and the main age of other punters seems to be around 20-something. I have long grey hair – so plenty of the youngsters get a laugh or a shock when I pass them in the crowd. I hear comments like ‘it’s my grand-dad’ (seriously). This year, 2011, it seems the hi5 has really come home to roost in Adelaide. I was meeting them all over. And once, in Sydney, we used to laugh at the Japanese tourists who jumped off a bus to photograph a tourist attraction without seeming to actually experience it beyond the potential postcard it was being captured in. As my day progressed I discovered that young folk are really keen to jump up next to you and grab a photograph of themselves with you. It’s the phone camera thing. All of a sudden I’m surrounded by some crew – didn’t even see them coming, they’ve all grouped around me, some young woman is taking a shot. They move on... what a great new friendship that was... not. The first few times it happened I thought it was a bit odd, but by the time I had danced my little old hundred year old feet off I (each foot is fifty this year) had been captured in more shots than I could possibly count, and I didn’t meet most of them – however I did meet a few, and had a dance with actual people not just my shadow.

The overall groove was wild as the day moved into night. The late sunset here due to daylight saving paid off, and dusk in Rymill Park is a magical time. Sumadayze is probably the most amazing place for any music enthusiast to be on New Years Day inside the South Australian borders.
The type of music enthusiast you would be is one who enjoys a beat and a bit of space to dance. A touch of rock and funk jazzed up with very groovy dance beats and some trippy dub. I didn’t notice any big trouble, no fights, not bad vibes.

Horrorshow, Urthboy, Madcap, Tinnie Tempah were all as feisty as get up with slick rhymes busting out. The giant purple mushrooms on either side of the stage were fun to glimpse every so often under the leafy shade. Food stalls and body art market area didn’t really pull me, but others seemed involved. I didn’t drink but for the free water fountain in the park. There were a great deal of people drinking, but I didn’t notice any growling at bars or line-up’s out of control.

What I did notice was a fresh and fun respectful group of people who mingled and enjoyed some ground-shakingly-good music presented by some of the most hip acts you could hope for. Quite the triumph on behalf of the team who put it all together.

Roger Sanchez - USA

Where you know him as 'the S-Man' or 'Roger S', Grammy Award-winning producer and iconic DJ, Roger Sanchez, is without question one of the biggest and most influential names in the history of House music. In a groundbreaking career that spans nearly 30 years, the native New Yorker has wowed crowds in every corner of the globe with his trademark thumping, sexy and soulful brand of House, and, in turn, has helped define the tag of superstar DJ for generations to come. From his legendary performances at the world's most exclusive events to his chart-topping hits (including 'Turn On The Music' and 'Another Chance'), and from his seminal label 'Stealth' to his award-winning radio show and acclaimed compilation and party series 'Release Yourself'; Roger Sanchez is a true master, pioneer and innovator of the global EDM domain.

The Ian Carey Project - USA

Having sold over one million records worldwide and having toured the planet a number of times over playing DJ gigs and live PA sets, in 2009 American-born electronic musician Ian Carey is a global House music phenomenon. An established and highly successful Producer since the late 1990s, his catalogue of hits include summertime anthems like 'Lose Control', 'Say What You Want' and last year's chart-destroying 'Get Shaky' (under his current guise 'The Ian Carey Project'), while his self-run record label 'GFAB Records' is regarded as one of the best in the business and has peddled the musical wares of key industry icons and House music heavyweights including Mark Knight, Paul Rincon and Soul Avengerz. It's time to get shaky with it.

Big, bold and full of soul, Ugly Duckling's beats and rhymes are truly the sound of now.

Dilated Peoples - USA

Dilated Peoples energized the rap underground in similar fashion to fellow West Coast crew Jurassic 5. The duo of Evidence and Rakaa came together in the mid-'90s, when they met at many of the same hip-hop shows; after deciding to start making tracks together, they formed Dilated Peoples. Once they added to the fold an excellent turntablist, DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples recorded the singles "Third Degree" and "Work the Angles" for ABB Records. The latter became an underground hit via hip-hop radio and club play, prompting Dilated Peoples' signing to Capitol. The Platform followed in May 2000. The group's follow-up for Capitol, The Expansion Team, was released with rave reviews as well as a Top 40 placing, and the group hit the road touring with the film Scratch, a documentary about hip-hop DJs and turntablists. The Dynamites

December 5th 2010 00:50
The Dynamites Feat Charles Walker
Touring Australia Dec-Jan

“KABOOM!” In Stores Jan 7th via Top Shelf/MGM
Sydney Festival
If the first attention-grabbing horn lines of The Dynamites album Kaboom! evoke a dramatic curtain call from a late ‘60’s soul concert at the Apollo Theater, it’s no accident. After all, that’s exactly where Charles Walker, the band’s singer and front man, first cut his teeth as a performer. When the revolutionary ‘new bag’ now known as funk first made the scene, Walker was right there in the thick of it, opening for the likes of James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Etta James, and Wilson Pickett, and imbibing himself in a cultural movement’s genesis. Walker recorded on many of the most reputed soul labels of that era, including Champion, Chess and Decca.

The Dynamites and Charles have been touring the U.S. and Europe extensively since their formation in 2007 and this will be their 2nd trip to Australia after first hitting our shores in April of this year for Byron Bay Bluesfest. Their 2nd album “Burn It Down” was released at the same time and received strong alternative radio support including being named a Feature Album on both 2SER (Sydney) and PBS (Melbourne).

“12 cuts of rambunctious virtuosity… Exceptional stuff” – Scene Magazine

Freshly partnered with Top Shelf Productions, The Dynamites Feat Charles Walker return to Australia THIS MONTH, for what promises to be a mind-blowing string of summer festivals shows. To celebrate, they will be making their debut album “Kaboom!” available in stores Jan 7th via Top Shelf/MGM. Catch the band:

Tue Dec 27th / Wed Dec 28th / Thu Dec 29th @ The Woodford Folk Festival, QLD

Fri Dec 30th @ Peats Ridge Festival, NSW

Thu Jan 6th / Fri Jan 7th @ The Order Of Melbourne, VIC

Sun Jan 9th @ Sydney Festival (Becks Bar)

In the early ‘60’s, Charles Walker’s group ‘Little Charles and the Sidewinders’ became one of the hottest acts on the New York club scene, residing for many years as the house band at the legendary Harlem jazz and soul/R&B venue, Small’s Paradise. All this, combined with his Tennessee background, made Walker a natural to be included in the Country Music Hall of Fame’s ‘Night Train to Nashville’ exhibit. As Doyle Davis, now owner of Outta Sight Records (the U.S. label that releases The Dynamites’ records) milled through the exhibit, curator Michael Gray raved about Walker’s recent performance at an event promoting the exhibit’s Night Train to Nashville release on Lost Highway Records. Davis knew then and there that he’d found the singer that Bill Elder (a.k.a. Leo Black), The Dynamites’ founder, had been searching for.

The result is The Dynamites Featuring Charles Walker, a full and heavy, explosive, “rawthentic” super soul outfit fronted by a dynamic, tried and true soul veteran in top form.

The Dynamites are far from being alone in their second millennium pursuit of rekindling soul-funk’s original flames. Spearheaded by The Dynamites good friends and frequent touring partners ‘Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings’, a renaissance of funk and soul is snatching up listeners all around the globe. As a New York Times article titled ‘What’s Going On? Everything Soul is New Again,’ says loud and clear: soul music is making a formidable comeback. “More than at any time in recent memory soul music’s pressing syncopation and stirring hollers are churning within the popular mainstream.”

Walker is relaxed and at the top of his game and any discerning listener can feel it. The fuse has been lit. “Kaboom!” is readymade for detonation. And as comeback albums for soul artists like Charles Walker hit the charts more and more, it seems the public is ready too.

“When he hit the heavy, heavy, horn-driven breakdown of ‘All Night Long’, his magnum opus, the venue erupted…This is your opportunity to rock out on the biggest stage with the best. Take it.” – The Age

Richie’s 2007 Australian tour, his first in 20 years, had audiences in raptures with the consummate professional winning over both fans and critics alike with his on stage charisma and hit-laden set list and this upcoming tour is sure to follow suit.

BLISS N ESO
LAUNCH INNOVATIVE TOUR CAMPAIGN

Sydney’s Bliss N Eso, a group that has long been at the forefront of the digital media game, have launched a campaign which enables their fans to decide the route of their next national tour.

It’s an unusual move for a band of their size, who last year completed the highest ever selling tour by an Australian hip-hop act, headlined some of the biggest festivals in the country and their latest album, Running on Air debuted at #1 in August this year.

Before becoming an all-conquering juggernaut, they built their fanbase through a combination of online promotion (in the ‘MySpace era’) and a never-ending touring schedule. In more recent years, they’ve focused touring internationally and in capital cities, but they’ve decided that it’s time to pay homage to the smaller towns once again.

The band have utilised a Facebook sharing application which enables entrants to gather the troops on their own personal page, amplifying the reach of their 200,000 fans to an infinite number of Australian Facebook users. Within 48 hours of launching, the competition had drawn tens of thousands of votes from across the country, and around the world.

As of Thursday 2pm AEST, the top five poll voters consisted of Wagga Wagga, the Sunshine Coast, Mount Gambier, the Blue Mountains and Sydney – making only one of them a capital city. Seemingly the more rural areas are seizing their opportunity to bring an act of Bliss N Eso’s size to their doorstep. The competition ends at 10pm AEST on Wednesday 8th December, with the winners announced on that Friday.

Bliss N Eso have just released Reflections, the new single off their latest album – Running on Air. The upcoming festival season sees them play at the sold-out Southbound Festival on NYE before they take to the main stage at the (also sold-out) national Big Day Out tour.

Justin Tour 2011

THE FRONTIER TOURING COMPANY PRESENTS
JUSTIN BIEBER TOURING AUSTRALIA FOR THE FIRST TIME APRIL/MAY 2011!

In an announcement that will have pop and R&B fans across the nation swooning, it gives The Frontier Touring Company great delight to confirm pop wunderkind Justin Bieber will embark on his first ever Australian tour in April 2011.

Justin Bieber's latest release My Worlds: The Collection features an acoustic album plus My Worlds (My World and My World 2.0) and his inspirational new song ‘Pray’. The collection was intended as a gift to his fans and is testament to his versatility as an artist.

Multiplatinum hit album My World 2.0 entered the US Billboard 200 at #1, making him the youngest solo male to top the chart since Stevie Wonder in 1963. The album reached #1 in a further 18 countries across the globe and the special My Worlds Australian Edition debuted at #1 on ARIA Album chart, achieving Platinum sales here.

Though ubiquitous with teen pop stardom, Justin Bieber" target="_blank">Justin Bieber’s remarkable vocal skills, talent and mature charisma have positioned him in a league of his own – efforts recognised by numerous industry organisations who have shown no hesitation toward bestowing their highest accolades upon the young artist.

This year alone, the Canadian prince of Pop has been the recipient of numerous TRL, Young Hollywood, Teen Choice, MTV Europe Music and MTV Video Music Awards crowning him the finest ‘International Male’ artist and ‘Breakthrough’ artist. American Music Awards deemed Justin Bieber ‘Artist Of The Year’ bringing his AMA tally to four and, at 16 years of age, he is the youngest ever recipient of the highly coveted award.

The credence of Justin Bieber's awards is outdone only by his devoted following of fans, who flock to his appearances and live shows and have grown to overflow venues as impressive as New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Exuding talent beyond his years, Justin Bieber's live performances cement his classification as a bona fide star:

“Turns out it's pretty close to impossible to come away from one of his shows unswayed by his enthusiasm, vigor, sincerity and, yes, actual talent, all of which were on display in abundance.” – Time Out New York

“Bieber is a born charmer, occasionally riffing alongside his four backup dancers before alighting on a monitor to reduce the front rows to quivering devotion. And that voice is no studio trick; he tackled melismatic trills, sassy street inflections and coffeehouse acoustic pleas without so much as tousling his considerable bangs.” – LA Times

“Armed with only his guitar, his voice, and his actual emotions, he struck the night’s strongest balance of artistry and image-making.” – The Boston Globe

His previous promotional visit to Australia resulted in mass hysteria with thousands of fans sent into a frenzy at the mere thought of getting a glimpse at the irresistible star, one of many examples of the global phenomenon known as ‘Bieber-Fever’.

Following such a fervent response, it was only a matter of time before Bieber brought his infectious pop hooks, heartfelt lyrics and ingenuous charm to Australian arenas. Finally the moment has arrived and at the affordable price of $95 for Gold tickets and $65 for Silver, it’s just in time for Christmas!

World AIDS Day

December 1st 2010 00:44
Take Action. No Discrimination.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is transmissible through bodily fluids such as blood. With time, HIV most often causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Disease, which is not communicable. HIV positive individuals need special health care and support from their community, and to live free from discrimination.

Bono and Kevin

We need to understand HIV and what it means to be HIV positive to properly support the individuals living with the virus. Through support, we can educate how to prevent HIV transmission.

World AIDS Day is one of the most globally recognised events of the year. World AIDS Day is celebrated across Australia to raise awareness in the community about the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

The theme for World AIDS Day 2010 is Take Action. No Discrimination. The aim is to encourage all Australians to be aware of the prelavence of HIV/AIDS; to take action to reduce the transmission of HIV by promoting safe sex practices; and to accept individuals living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

HIV positive people need to be empowered in society to strengthen community spirit, feel included and educate on HIV and AIDS. They have the right to participate in the community free from stigma and discrimination.
