The Fabulous Punch & Judy Show
By Brent Thorpe
A Wicked Comedy in One Act - An Adult Pantomime
At The Old Fitzroy Theatre from February 10
A dark comedy based on the puppet show Punch and Judy which was first staged in 1832, The Fabulous Punch and Judy Show revives a classic tale in a no holds barred journey that unmasks what it means to be truly Australian. Playwright Brent Thorpe and musical director Billy O’Riordan stage the adult pantomime with hints of burlesque, vaudeville and grotesque theatre at The Old Fitzroy from February 16 to March 6, with previews from February 10-14.
The Fabulous Punch and Judy Show is inspired by the work of Reg Livermore, Lindsay Kemp, The Cycle Sluts and Cabaret Conspiracy. It is a work that makes Mr Punch proud as he unveils his political view of the world and takes action to make things right - even if that means slaying children, screwing maids and strangling poofters. It’s all in a day’s work.
“I’m excited about our upcoming season, the fresh and edgy vibe at The Old Fitzroy matches the tone of the show,” said playwright Brent Thorpe. “The Fabulous Punch and Judy Show uses a range of influences but ultimately tells an Australian story and I’m most excited about sharing that story with audiences”.
The score has a unique blend of everything from Mozart to Sherbet and everything in between. “It reflects the show's humour and sense of anarchy,” said Musical Director Billy O’Riordan.
NIDA and Actors Centre Australia graduate and performance artist, Brent Thorpe has written several plays including Ladies And Gentlemen Brenda Trolloppe In Concert, Sleeping Beauty, Alicemachine, Star and The Changeling Boy (an adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Thorpe appeared in The Fairy and The Dame at the Side On Café and directed and designed Twelfth Night for Lane Cove Theatre Company for which he was nominated for Best Play by a Co-Op or Amateur Company by Broadway Australia. Thorpe is the author and director of The Rocks Ghosts Tour (a tour of Sydney’s historic Rocks area) which currently plays to 1200 people a month and in 2009 he directed the sellout revival of Tom Eyen’s cult classic Women Behind Bars and his play Betcha Thought I Was Dead was included in the 2009 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival.
