LUKA BLOOM 2009 Tour

LUKA BLOOM
Born Barry Moore in 1955 in County Kildare Ireland, Luka Bloom is the youngest member of the family of three sisters and two brothers. Music was an intrinsic part of his life
growing up. All the family would sing and play but Barry had his own way and style of making music. From a very early age he was writing songs and honing his skills as a serious guitar player – and began touring when he was just 14 years old as the support act to his eldest brother Christy Moore.
In 1977 he toured Germany and England with Inchiquin. In 1979 Barry moved to Holland where he based himself for a number of years. He recorded the album In Groningen in 1980 and then in 1982 recorded No Heroes which contained all his own songs. “Remember The Brave Ones” was later recorded by Moving Hearts. Barry spent some time playing with Manus Lunny before he headed off in a new direction. From 1983-1986 Barry fronted the Dublin post punk/pop band Red Square. It was one of 5000 bands in Dublin trying to become the next U2.
In 1987 Barry went to America and Luka Bloom came back. He had decided to head to America and check it out - before he left he made a serious decision. New country, new
people, new everything - why not a new name? Luka come from the Susanne Vega song
“My Name Is Luka” and Bloom from James Joyce’s Ulysses. Luka Bloom sang his songs around the US doing shows with The Pogues, The Violent Femmes, The Dixie Chicks, Hothouse Flowers and The Cowboy Junkies. He signed with Warner Music in LA and recorded Riverside, The Acoustic Motorbike and Turf.
Luka’s appearance at the Pink Pop Festival in the Netherlands in 1991 is considered the
start of his breakthrough in Europe. In 1992 Luka headed down under for his first extensive tour of Australia. Luka has been touring the world constantly since and in between recorded much awaited albums including Salty Heaven and Keeper Of The Flame.
In 1993 Luka got a call from New York. Lou Reed requested that Luka join David Byrne, Roseanne Cash and Lou in a songwriter’s night to celebrate Bottom Line’s (a New York Club) birthday. Needless to remark, he jumped at the opportunity and had a terrific night gigging with these great artists.
In 2001 Luka created Big Sky Records and released The Barry Moore Years, an album of early songs written before 1987. In the same year Luka made Between The Mountain and The Moon, an album of new original songs. 2003 saw the release of Amsterdam – a live performance from the Carre Theatre in Amsterdam. In 2004 Before Sleep Comes was recorded, nine soft songs for insomniacs.
In 2005 Luka launched his album Innocence in Australia. “I really love coming to Australia. I think there’s a deep empathy between Australians and the Irish, something hard to define, but probably evident within our similar, self-effacing sense of humour. I do always feel at home there.” In 2007 Luka released Tribe, a collaboration with Dubliner Simon O’Reilly, which coincided with his last tour of Australia and received fantastic reviews. This brings him to 2009 with a new album and a new tour.
As one Australian reviewer said “…Luka is a solo performer whose trademark is his
thunderous and exhilarating acoustic guitar playing, his fine voice and his warm and passionate delivery.”

Much loved Irish troubadour LUKA BLOOM releases a new album ELEVEN SONGS (Shock
Records) with a good excuse to return to our shores for his 9 th Australian tour. He says
“…in truth, I spend 2 months out of 24 in Australia and the next 22 waiting to return….”
After recording his last few, slightly more experimental projects at home, Luka returned to
a top flight studio in Dublin and recorded what could well be a career defining record. Luka explains “Over the last 5 years, I have written and or recorded all my records at home. Before Sleep Comes and Innocence were both conceived and recorded in Kildare. Tribe was written between Simon O'Reilly's home and mine. And of course the DVD 'The Man is Alive' contained a concert in my living room.”
“In November 2007 I sat down with David Odlum to discuss the 20 songs I had to consider for the next record. David had mixed Tribe in Black Box in France. I loved working with him. As well as a gifted and patient and creative engineer, David has great music in him, having been The Frames guitarist for many years. I felt we could make a great record together. And I had a lot of faith in the songs we were looking at.”
“We decided to make a more traditional style record; great room, great musicians and
singers, old microphones. We wanted to capture an honest, and hopefully beautiful
performance of the songs. I don't mind admitting that the template for the record was the
sound on the Alison Krauss/Robert Plant record of 2007, Raising Sand. It seemed like a
long time since I had heard such a raw, beautiful room sound. And we both thought, let’s
try to record the songs this way.”
“Why 11 songs? I always seem to choose a title from a particular song. On this occasion, I
felt it was important to honour the entire project, and find a name for the record that reflected the record. In 11 Songs, I guess I'm asking people to take the time to hear the entire record. Obviously people will choose certain tracks to push for radio attention etc...
but for us, each of the songs is important, as is the order we chose to present them.”
“It has been a great adventure creating 11 SONGS, and I couldn't love it more.”
