Australia’s Natural Disasters by Richard Whitaker
New Holland Publishers
RRP: $34.95
Meteorologist and author Richard Whitaker provides a comprehensive and fascinating overview of Australia’s natural disasters in this glossy book. Each chapter contains diagrams providing an insight into weather conditions that resulted in one disaster or another. Extremely compelling photography from a range of sources offers any lay-person with an interest in the subject magnificent visuals.
This ‘New Edition’ is impressive as it traces the natural disasters of our nation’s history from 1857 through to 2003. Certainly the book will be of use to students studying our weather and its extraordinary effects upon society. As a social history reflecting upon disastrous situations and the community reactions to them, it manages to steer clear of sensationalist or tabloid journalism while clearly telling many a gripping story.
For those who take an interest in weather-watching, and those who like to have a general knowledge of significant incidents, Australia’s Natural Disasters by Richard Whitaker is a sometimes engrossing, always informative work.
