10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY !Being the tenth year anniversary, many key performers from previous years have been asked to return - to celebrate and showcase Stylin’ Up’s success. A very special guest:
Archie Roach

Though obviously not hip hop / RnB - Archie Roach will be performing on stage both solo as well as with Fred Leone from Impossible Odds. Fred and Archie have a long history together, having co written with each other - one track of which they will be performing live at Stylin’ Up 2010. Archie is also a national Indigenous icon whose presence at Stylin’ Up runs true with the ideals of the event.

Saturday May 29 @ CJ Greenfields Sports Complex, Inala
Pride in SELF / Pride in COMMUNITY / Pride in CULTURE
[

Australia's largest Indigenous youth HIP HOP / RnB and cultural festival Stylin' UP returns for 2010 for its TENTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY.

Stylin’ UP was established in 2001 by local Inala elders in partnership with Brisbane City Council as a way of instilling their youth with pride in themselves, their community and their culture. The event now attracts crowds from across Queensland in excess of 15 000 each year, and has grown to become Australia's largest Indigenous Hip Hop and R&B music and dance event that celebrates youth and contemporary Indigenous culture.Produced with and for young people in Brisbane and across Queensland, Stylin' Up is also an award winning, nationally lauded contemporary Indigenous creative arts development program (winning the 2004 Premier of QLD award and a Reconciliation award in 2008).

Stylin' Up's mantra Pride in SELF / Pride in COMMUNITY / Pride in CULTURE, emphasises its commitment to young Indigenous people to take a positive step towards personal and social change, which ultimately contributes to community change. Stylin UP has been developed within a community development framework including a large workshop program facilitated by leading local artists in the run up to the event each year. The workshops run in local schools in the South West Brisbane Corridor as well as through a regional program facilitated by Human Ventures. These workshop programs nurture the next generation of artists as well as passing on the inherent values of Stylin UP no shame - step up and be proud; represent your culture and your community.

Being the tenth year anniversary, many key performers from previous years have been asked to return - to celebrate and showcase their (and Stylin’ Up’s) success. The entire line up has now been officially announced:
Archie Roach

Though obviously not hip hop / RnB - Archie Roach will be performing on stage both solo as well as with Fred Leone from Impossible Odds. Fred and Archie have a long history together, having co written with each other - one track of which they will be performing live at Stylin’ Up 2010. Archie is also a national Indigenous icon whose presence at Stylin’ Up runs true with the ideals of the event.

Stylin’ Up General Info
One of Stylin UP's key outcomes has been the fostering of a mutual respect between the South West Brisbane corridor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and the Brisbane City Council. The collaboration has been declared a rare success, because of its long term commitment to the community and reconciliation.

Kelvin Lui (Project Officer from Inala elders and Community member) explains, “Such collaboration between Indigenous community and government is rare. Stylin UP has worked because it wasn't a one off, it has been a commitment to the long term and ultimately - a positive step towards reconciliation and connecting young people to peace and long term resolution.”

Stylin' UP breaks down the barriers between community and police and community and government and encourage s young indigenous people to step up and grab opportunities and engage themselves in them. Music

Though not exclusively a music festival, Stylin’Up combines some of Australia’s finest Indigenous Hip Hop and R&B acts alongside a host of local and national emerging acts, providing Indigenous youth throughout the Inala district and greater Queensland, the power and support to express themselves artistically on a national level.

Over the last ten years headliners have included Jessica Mauboy, Christine Anu, Savage, Last Kinection and many many more. This is combined with the aforementioned 'emerging artist' line up, many of whom have gone on to become headliners in their own right. Examples include locals Indigenous Intrudaz - 2 local Inala MC's with a massive local following who have grown up alongside Stylin' UP playing every gig in its 10 year history."Stylin’ Up is basically like Christmas for us in Inala" laughs Indigenous Intrudaz MC Damien Bani. Indigenous Intrudaz won the won JB Seed Grant in 2008 and have just finished recording an album at the prestigious 301 Studios. Damien Bani also works as a producer on Stylin’ UP, one of his tasks is implementing the ‘emerging artist’ line up. Fellow Intruder MC Dougie Patrick also facilitates local Stylin’ Up workshops.

Other examples are fellow locals Banawurun, who took out the 2006 Deadly Award for Band of the Year and Impossible Odds - emerging artists in 2007, Impossible Odds have since gone onto have a number of tracks receive high rotation on triple J.

The Inala Community through the Stylin'Up Community Crew decide who performs at Stylin' Up each year. Their mantra in 2010 has been to support the local Inala and Queensland talent to shine for The 10th year anniversary Stylin' Up. The program this year see’s many key performers from previous years asked to return celebrate and showcase their success.

Workshops

The Stylin’UP program also consists of an extensive workshop program. Workshop’s run for four to 6 months leading up to the festival in Brisbane and the South West Brisbane corridor, and year round throughout key regional Queensland Indigenous communities, including Logan, Cherbourg, Hopevale and Woorabinda.

The workshop process is an integral part of Stylin' Up. Amongst many other things, it provides young people with routine through rehearsals and places an emphasis upon the importance of process and skill development. Nurturing and empowering the next generation.

Music and Dance: Workshops in Music creation, beat production, lyric writing, streetfunk, breakdance and performance technique.Ladeez Business: A program of arts, cultural and skills development workshops, specifically for young women. These workshops create a safe environment for young women to explore and express, develop identities and community solutions through culturally appropriate arts and cultural forms.Little Ladies: Specifically targeted at young Indigenous girls aged 4 – 11 and their families who live in and around the Inala region.Traditional Dance: Workshops for young children years 1 – 7 in traditional dance, food and cultural practices.

Dancing

Dancing, both contemporary and traditional, is a massive part of Stylin' UP. There are a multitude of performances and competitions right throughout the day. Workshops run prior to the event culminate in on the day performances. Whilst traditional dance groups feature alongside contemporary dance - many groups also incorporating unique qualities of their traditional dance in to contemporary dance formats.

Community

Ultimately – though now of national significance, Stylin UP is all about community. The Stylin UP community crew, who run the event, is open to all community members to attend. All posters and event artwork is designed by young local indigenous artists, T shirts are printed by local manufacturers and performers are chosen by community groups.

A myriad of cultural and community events take place alongside the music stage and offer a mix of performances and activities that showcase the talent of the local community. Tame Impala | May Tour

TAME IMPALA
INNERSPEAKER

DEBUT ALBUM OUT MAY 21 & NATIONAL TOUR

Modular announces that West Coast sonic wanderers Tame Impala will unveil their debut album InnerSpeaker on May 21, and are taking to the road in May for a National Tour.

It will be the first time much of the record is played live to an unsuspecting public and will showcase the gloriously dazzling results of one of planet earth’s most exciting bands absolutely going to town on their debut long player.

Following on from their debut, self-titled EP, InnerSpeaker is Tame Impala's chance to paint a far more extensive picture than before, and sure enough it redrafts the entire Tame Impala world as we knew it, into an explosive cosmic wonderland of ecstatic harmony and perfectly accessible journeys into inner space.

Recorded and produced by the band's own Kevin Parker with Death In Vegas’s Tim Holmes on the engineer duties, in an enormous mansion with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean in the middle of buttfuck nowhere a few hours south of Perth, InnerSpeaker is ensconced with a kind of inspired vastness not dislike the place it was made.

It was then mixed in a completely different kind of nowhere, a log cabin surrounded by snow and deer in upstate New York, by renowned sonic maverick Dave Fridmann (MGMT / Flaming Lips).

Click HERE for your first glimpse inside the debut album, where magic and music abounds. with plenty more where that came from.

The resultant record will first be revealed with the single, Solitude Is Bliss, a joyous summertime romp through fields of honeyed harmony and crispy good times and is just the very tip of the amorphous cosmos that is InnerSpeaker.

InnerSpeaker is available for pre-order now from the Modular Shop (for local & international orders) and from Get Music in digital & physical formats (for Australians only).

Or as a special offer to live show fans, you will have an opportunity to pre-order the album with tickets purchased to the May National Tour.

Be the first to hear InnerSpeaker live at the dates below….

BATRIDER are back!

March 28th 2010 07:50
Batrider are back in Australia following 2 years of gigs, new friends, wild times and happy accidents in foreign lands. After splitting time between London sublets and European adventures, and losing their USA touring virginity the equivalent of behind a bush at a party when you’re 16, Batrider have now decided to settle in... Adelaide. YES ADELAIDE! And with barely enough time to wash the lint-of-a-thousand-couches from their tired bodies, Batrider are hitting the road again embarking on their first Australian tour in years.

The Batrider Beaks Tour takes the band’s fourth release Why We Cant Be Together (2009) around their adopted home of Australia, and also sees the release of a limited run of live recordings made while in the USA.

The new live record reflects the band’s current 3-piece incarnation and is the most direct, dynamic, melodic, and unique to date. Those familiar with Batrider’s sound will find its most compelling qualities more than intact, with the guitar and vocals of Sarah Mary Chadwick marking themselves as more clamourous and emotive than ever, with Steph Crase (Birth Glow, No Through Road) on drums and summery melancholic harmonies, and Sam Featherstone holding the whole mess together on bass.

Nonetheless, it wouldn’t really be fair to let you assume that Batrider aren’t still really really loud, and quite possibly one of the most viscerally confronting bands you’ll ever experience live. Would it?

2010 is another big year for Batrider with a new release to add to their now extensive back catalogue, reconnecting with both Australian and New Zealand watering holes, not to
mention enjoying the plethora of exciting tourist locations Adelaide has to offer. Wink.

Watch and Listen to John Cale's Keynote Online

On February 15 underground rock royalty and founding member of the Velvet Underground, John Cale, cut the red ribbon for Modular and Sydney Festival's Circa 1979: Signal to Noise with a Keynote speech at the Seymour Centre.

Hipsters rubbed shoulders with electronic pioneers in a packed out York Theatre as Cale showed off a few snaps and described working with the likes of Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Happy Mondays, The Stooges and LCD Soundsystem before capping things off with a mind blowing rendition of "Heart Break Hotel."

If you missed the speech or want to listen/watch it again, ABC's Big Ideas are streaming it online.

ART vs SCIENCE go GOLD

February 18th 2010 08:10
Fresh from loping in at #2 and #74 on triple j's Hottest 100, Sydney's ART vs SCIENCE have recently achieved Gold status in the ARIA Charts for their the eponymous debut EP (out through Green/MGM). The Hottest 100 result also effected the re-entry of the EP into the Top 5 on iTunes and back into the ARIA Top 40. It is currently sitting at no. 1 on the physical singles chart.

Falls Lorne 2009

Released last May, the independently-released 5-track EP contains radio favourites Parlez-Vous Francais?, Hollywood, Flippers and Friend in the Field. Its performance in the charts was no doubt augmented by the three piece's scene-stealing live show, which has seen the band play at countless festivals and sold-out gigs around the country over the past 12 months.

ART vs SCIENCE have again teamed up with producer/engineer Berkfinger and are currently in the studio writing and recording their anticipated debut long-player. The album - to be released independently through Green/MGM, with label services assistance from Parallel Management - is due out in June 2010. Keep an ear out for the first single in April.

The Slew

February 3rd 2010 14:31
In one of the most exciting collaborations to grace the stage in years, Canadian turntable masters Kid Koala and Dynomite D team up with former Wolfmother crew Chris Ross and Myles Heskett to create a psych/heavy-rock-drenched project The Slew.

The Slew’s album ‘100%’ is out now through Ninja Tune/Inertia.

Kid Koala proudly presents The Slew Live featuring a hefty six turntables with Chris and Myles from Wolfmother on bass and drums. Hitting up major capital cities across Australia in May, it’s rock turntablism like you’ve never seen it before.

Four and a half years ago, Eric San (aka Kid Koala) and Dylan J. Frombach (aka Dynomite D) started working on a rock record. The pair, who met on the Beastie Boys tour in 1998, had been approached to soundtrack a documentary feature film. The film was eventually abandoned, but with Mario Caldato (longtime producer for Beastie Boys) on board for mixing, San and Frombach were already deep into the psych rock-influenced score and there was no turning back.

Teaming up with Chris Ross and Myles Heskett – the former rhythm section of Grammy Award-winning band Wolfmother – The Slew set out to put together a full-blown rock band experience to do justice to the material in a live setting. And justice was served: The truly excessive six turntables, drum, bass, keyboard and wall of amps that made their way across North America this October made for a full-on raw, pummeling rock experience. The Slew bring attitude back to the turntable unlike anything you’ve ever heard.

This year we look to the land of the snowy Andes Mountains, sunny Caribbean beaches and luscious Amazon rainforest for a cinema programme that is just as rich and varied!

The 13th Spanish Film Festival produced with the support of the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs in Spain, the Spanish Consulate in Sydney and Melbourne, The Spanish Embassy, the Argentinean Government through INCAA (Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts Argentina), Victorian Multicultural Commission, The Embassies and Consulates of Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, The Australian National University and many prestigious Spanish and Australian companies.
