SAM MORAN WIGGLES' LOVE

March 15th 2010 05:25
SAM MORAN THE COLOUR OF LOVE

When he accepted The Wiggles' yellow skivvy in 2006, Sam Moran knew it was the point of no return.

On the road for thirty-five weeks of the year with hundreds of appearances on stage and screen leaves time for little else in the hectic schedule of Australia's most successful entertainers. But Sam was born to entertain and was ready for any challenge that lay in front of him. Three years after that moment and now recognised as one of Australia's most gifted performers, he unveils a solo project for his older fans, entitled The Colour Of Love.

It's an incredible journey from his first vocal lessons at school in Wagga Wagga. Sam recalls, "There's not that many music teachers in Wagga, but we found a singing teacher when I was fourteen, and I started taking opera lessons." After graduating, he continued his vocal training at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studied classical voice and music education with the intention of becoming a music teacher. However, his passion for performing was overwhelming, and through heavy involvement performing in musicals he ended up meeting John Field, a songwriter for 'The Wiggles’ and brother of Anthony (the blue Wiggle). Only six months later Moran got a career break when he successfully auditioned for the role to host the spin-off production Dorothy The Dinosaur Show.

After quitting his studies to tour with the production, his natural affinity for The Wiggles' performance style and their educational theory saw him perform several characters in their show, and filled in on occasion for the then yellow Wiggle and lead singer Greg Page. When Page eventually retired as a result of a chronic illness, The Wiggles decided to continue on, and Sam was offered the role. Now he is one of the busiest entertainers in the world, and he has never looked back.

A solo project for a Wiggle is a nearly inconceivable endeavour. Unlike normal music tours which might run around a specific release, The Wiggles are constantly overseas and perform six days a week for eleven months of the year. Be it television in the U.S., live shows in the U.K. or filming in Australia, it's very difficult for a Wiggle to have time for non-Wiggly interests.

So how Sam Moran might expect to create an album on his own, including recording and releasing it in Australia, is more ambitious than it seems. But it's a project he's passionate about because it reaches a whole new audience. "What we do with The Wiggles is fantastic," says Sam, "When we're performing for children, we sing mostly for joyous expression and dancing. In contrast, this album gives me a chance to explore more adult emotions."
Sam Moran

It's fitting then that as Sam who recently became a dad with a baby girl with his wife Lyn, has chosen to celebrate the theme of love. The result is an album which explores these emotions within a collection of carefully selected covers. "It's looking at love from different perspectives," Sam explains, "The inspiration came from an unusual place. I came across a discussion board on the internet where there was a lot of people debating and arguing over which colour love is. It was then that I realised that each person's experiences had coloured their perspective of love." And so The Colour Of Love was conceived.

Sam's renditions range from playful to solemn in songs which include Fleetwood Mac's You Make Loving Fun and Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody. It's a special collection performed with beautiful yet simple instrumentation in moving renditions of classics such as God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, The Scientist by Coldplay and Fire And Rain by James Taylor. Sam's voice and personality shines through in both the high and low moments of the album, which truly is a journey through the different colours of love.

As one of the most popular singers for children and parents around the world, Sam Moran’s COLOUR OF LOVE will no doubt become one of the most requested gifts this Mother’s day.

COLOUR OF LOVE is released on 9th April 2010 through Sony Music Entertainment Australia.

Northcote (So Hungover)

March 13th 2010 12:09
In the lead-up to his third studio album Songs From The 86 Tram (set for release April 2 through Shock), wit-hot maverick The Bedroom Philosopher has officially unleashed new single Northcote (So Hungover), the follow up to previous single Tram Inspector (Inpress Single Of The Week – Dec 09).

Already on high rotation on triple J, new track Northcote (So Hungover) is a searing slice of scenester satire, and possibly the first time someone has dared attempt to capture the 'nu Australian' accent. From beneath the safety of a long fringe, our antagonist protagonist 'uh's' and 'yeah's' his way through the exploits of his band, giving you the intimacy of an overheard conversation in the comfort of your own phones. Check out Northcote (So Hungover) here: The Bedroom Philosopher

The Bedroom Philosopher may have achieved the perfect blend between humour and music, his tighter-than-your-jeans band of hipster slayers The Awkwardstra, laying down a surefire shoegaze rock bed, the relentless 4/4 chug, driving the song forward on a one way route to cooltown. Finally, a playful point is struck against the Vice magazine army of Gen-Y fashionistas that hide behind trash fashion and fixed gear aloofness.

Northcote (So Hungover) follows in the footsteps of The Bedroom Philosopher’s 2005 hits I’m So Postmodern, Folkstar and Golden Gaytime, his ironic quick-wit comedy finding a cozy niche on Triple J and community radio Australia wide. Shows everywhere from The Melbourne International Comedy Festival to the Big Day Out are augmented by The Bedroom Philosopher’s (aka Justin Heazlewood) position as senior writer for national mag Frankie, his regular sketch comedy show on Triple R ‘Lime Champions’, and even a recent stint as a young John Safran on ‘Race Relations’.

With his new album Songs From The 86 Tram The Bedroom Philosopher has levelled the playing field as every demographic gets their turn; from Aussie hip-hop wannabees to bogans to backpackers, the middle aged and the elderly. The album has been sculpted from his award-winning 2009 Comedy Festival show of the same name, and was created with the help of producer Chris Scallan (Avalanches, Akon, Baz Luhmann's Australia), Harry Angus on brass, as well as his smokin' hot band The Awkwardstra.

New single Northcote (So Hungover) is at radio nationwide and available on iTunes now

“...ample musical invention flavours his dreams of alien abduction, caged bears and Jesus on Big Brother, and unlike the accidentally funny troubadours out there, he knows a joke should have a point.”
Michael Dwyer, The Age

"As far as the greater population is concerned, I weep for musical comedy artists in this post-Flight Of The Conchords (*on HBO) age; Joe and Jo Blow tend to be able to stomach only one of each "thing" currently in the zeitgeist. However, their ignoring of other musically inclined funny people is their loss, because The Bedroom Philosopher's hysterical skewering of meat-headed ticketing inspectors falls somewhere between a Fame-era Bowie slink and inspirational Hunners balladry. I like my musical comedy to, as the name suggests, be musically captivating first, funny second. Luckily, with Tram Inspector, both come equal first."
Clem Bastow, Inpress.

“It is (like the man himself) entirely enjoyable, entirely likeable, and entirely odd”
Timothy Bocquet, BMA

ANNOUNCING AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND TOUR!

It gives The Frontier Touring Company great delight to announce the return of Regina Spektor to Australia and New Zealand in April this year.

When Regina Spektor's family moved from her birthplace of the Soviet Union to America's Bronx, her musical interests and talent expanded from the genre of classical music toward the vibrancy of pop and rock. These transitions of location and taste are reflected in the classical artistry within her piano composition and distinctive eclectic fusion of sounds. Adding to her repertoire of skills is her ability to play not only the piano but the guitar and occasional percussion as well, rendering her a truly versatile musician.

The Cult “LOVE” Live Tour will showcase the band’s alternative roots as musicians and performers, and is sure to electrify new fans and devotees. The band will take fans through a “best of” finale which will include their greatest hits spanning their storied career. The Cult will deliver spectacular production, along with the intense performances that fans have come to expect and have been working closely with their art/ design team to create an arresting set, with dramatic effects, using state-of-the art technology.
