Making a rare appearance in Sydney the David Chesworth Ensemble has recently been performing to audiences in the UK and France. Together for over 15 years the ensemble has made an indelible mark on the Australian music scene with great live performances of the distinctive and beguiling music of David Chesworth. The ensemble members add their own special touch bringing their experiences from a wide range of groups including My Friend the Chocolate Cake, The Black Arm Band, Elision and Speak Percussion.


In Sydney they will be performing music from Music To See Through a work by David Chesworth that received three nominations for Instrumental Work of the Year at the Classical Music Awards presented by APRA and the Australian Music Centre, including the award winning set-theory inspired work Panopticon.

David Chesworth Ensemble are: David Chesworth – electronics; John McAll – piano; Andrea Keeble – violin; Helen Mountfort – cello; Eugene Ughetti – percussion; Peter Neville – percussion; Simon Myers – trombone; Jeremy Alsop - bass.

BIOGRAPHIES:

DAVID CHESWORTH (electronics) is a sound artist and composer in the fields of art, opera, installation and exploratory music as well as a performer with his own eight piece ensemble. His installation work is made in collaboration with artist Sonia Leber.

JOHN MCALL (piano) completed his studies at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1985. In 1987 he composed scores for two short films by Jocelyn Moorhouse, The Siege of Barton's Bathroom and Pavane. During 1988/89 he played on Vince Jones' One Day Spent album and Stephen Cummings' Love Town. He has performed in three Chamber Made Opera productions, The Cars That Ate Paris, and Chesworth's Lacuna and The Two Executioners

ANDREA KEEBLE (violin) studied violin at the Victorian College of the Arts and performs and travels regularly with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as freelance work in opera & chamber music, and lately performs as an “occasional” Stiletto Sister. She also enjoys her work as a performer & composer for live theatre, and is establishing two new groups combining classical and original works: Bach, Bartok & Beyond and Ad Hoc String Ensemble(with Helen Mountfort) and her own original group Stroll. She is currently touring internationally with the Skin Quartet.

HELEN MOUNTFORD (cello) Helen Mountfort is a Melbourne based composer and performer. A founding member of the band "My Friend the Chocolate Cake", Helen also plays cello with the David Chesworth Ensemble, Cosmo Cosmolino and the string quartet DeFlocked.

EUGENE UGHETTI (percussion) is a Melbourne based percussionist, composer and artistic director of Speak Percussion. He has studied with significant artists from most continents and completed a degree with Honors in Classical Percussion at the Victorian College of the Arts. His professional experience is diverse but his particular focus is new music and hybrid-arts collaboration.

PETER NEVILLE (percussion) is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts and was appointed Head of Percussion there in 2000. Whilst he works across the range of musical styles he has a particular commitment to new music. As the percussionist of the ELISION Ensemble for twenty years, Peter has been involved with practically all their concerts, compact discs, and international tours. Works including Chris DENCH's Driftglass, for percussion and ensemble, and Richard BARRETT's abglanzbeladen--auseinanderge schrieben have been written for and premiered by him.

SIMON MYERS (trombone) Following his graduation from the V.C.A. and overseas study, Simon has regularly appeared with professional musical ensembles including the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Recent musical productions include Phantom of the Opera, 42nd Street, Scrooge and West Side Story. On-going work includes recording sessions and work with well known jazz ensembles, including the Pearly Shells. Simon has worked with David Chesworth on many projects including Lacuna with Chamber Made Opera.

JEREMY ALSOP (bass) is widely recognized as one of Australia’s leading bass guitarists, with a comprehensive recording and performing career spanning 25 years. In 1978 he was a founding member of the original fusion band Pyramid, which has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival. During the 80s he was Melbourne’s leading studio bassist and a member of the hugely successful band Men at Work. While based in New York, Jeremy performed and recorded with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, and Sting among others. Returning to Australia in 1990, Jeremy played with Paul Grabowsky’s Tonight Live band and began working with singers Grace Knight, Margret Ulrich, Debra Byrne, and Christine Sullivan. He formed The Lovers with Mary Doumany, which has included several CD releases. Recent projects have been with the David Chesworth Ensemble, Slava Grygoryan, as well as an invitation to play at the 2005 Jaco Pastorius Birthday Concert in USA. Jeremy has lectured at Melbourne University and the Victorian College of the Arts and is keenly sought as a recording engineer and music producer.
