Ernest Ellis heads for the cold with winter tour

In support of his stunning debut album, “Hunting” due for release on June 18, Ernest Ellis is set to embark on an East Coast tour throughout July taking in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney as well as Canberra, Toowoomba and Wollongong.
After writing the bulk of the material in the rustic surrounds of the Blue Mountains, Ernest Ellis teamed up with co-producer Tim Carr to take the recording process out of the studio and into the open air. Whilst Ernest Ellis is a band, it’s the brainchild of Roland Ellis who works in collaboration with Tim Carr and other members of his band including drummer Mat Gardner and bassist Ben Morgan. They headed out to the sprawling 500 acres of farm property owned by Tim’s Dad just outside of Orange and set up in the farmhouse and vast warehouse.
This removal created the feeling of air and space amongst the recordings, allowing the team to experiment not only with the songs but with the methods of recording them. Most of the vocals were recorded lying in a bathtub, “partly out of stubbornness because I was in a mood, and partly because I like the natural reverb of that bathroom”. The drums for ‘Heading For The Cold’ were literally recorded atop a mountain, allowing the natural reverb to echo across the valley and provide that unique sense of space usually so elusive and restrictive in a studio environment.
That is not to say that Ernest Ellis abandoned the studio all together. Having laid down the basis of lthe ong-player, they returned to Studio 301 to put the finishing touches and mixes on the album.
The album crisscrosses various terrains from anthemic and dramatic guitar fueled tracks (Loveless, Want For Anything) to pastoral acoustic moments (Valley Song) to lilting and infectious pop (Heading For The Cold, Bad Blood). It’s a bold, ambitious collection of songs that showcases a writer with a broad and at times challenging vision.
The final result is an album, full of wide open spaces followed by a cosy night in after a successful day’s hunting. With a full band to bring the album to life on stage, Ernest Ellis goes beyond the realms of the recording, adding a more upbeat, rockier dimension to the live performance (featuring Mat Gardner on Drums, Ben Morgan on Bass and Keita Tarlinton on keys).
Ernest Ellis debut album “Hunting” is out on June 16th through Dew Process/UMA.
