Feast Highlights for 2008 (LINK)

August 17th 2008 02:19

Feast Festival, one Australia's largest queer arts and cultural festivals has unveiled the poster for the 12th annual festival and announced three highlights for the event which takes place in Adelaide from November 15 to 30.

The poster designed by Andrew Smart of Black Jacket Studio features the pink silhouette of a winged figure in front of a city skyline, aligning with the Festival's 2008 theme of diverseCITY.

The poster was unveiled at BINGE - A Feast Festival Gala held at the Norwood Concert Hall on Saturday night, featuring performances by Meow Meow, Glace Chase and Coco's Lunch.

Feast Director Daniel Clarke said, 'I knew immediately that I wanted this design for Feast’s poster. It is bold, iconic and celebrates individuality. It is a man, it is a woman. It is whatever you want it to be. It is a powerful image that represents the beauty and power of our community and inspires me to imagine an Adelaide that is more visibly bent. It is an image full of anticipation. A readiness. A power. It is an image that places the queer community in the middle of our city ready to fly. And fly we will.'

The three 2008 Feast program highlights released are:

Lea Delaria is Naked (USA)
Lea DeLaria has been a professional lesbian since 1982 (before that she free lanced), and has distinguished herself in every field of entertainment that she touches. Whether in her comedy specials on HBO SHOWTIME and COMEDY CENTRAL (she was the fist openly gay comic to perform on network television in the United States), or one of the 3 CD's she has out on The Warner Jazz Label (she was the featured vocalist for The 50th Anniversary of The Newport Jazz Festival), or her star-making turn as Hildy in the Broadway revival of On The Town (for which she won Obie, Drama Desk, Theater World, and Drama League Awards).

Blowing Whistles (NSW)

The Adelaide premiere of the London Pride festival hit Blowing Whistles was also a sell-out Mardi Gras success in Sydney. On the eve of Mardi Gras, and their anniversary, thirty something gay couple Nigel and Jamie log onto the internet and decide to celebrate with cumboy_17. As with many online purchases, once delivered the couple begin to question whether a night of casual sex is exactly what their relationship needs. Critics Pick of the Week The Times
'Full marks...a refreshingly comic take on being gay and romantic' The Daily Telegraph

The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac (USA)
One performer - Taylor Mac. No set but lots of costumes and a giant suitcase. The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac has played over 30 theatres including: The Sydney Opera House, The Public Theatre, London’s Soho Theatre, Stockholm’s Sodra Teatern, Dublin’s Project Arts Centre and Portland’s Time Based Arts Festival.

A flamboyant chameleon of words, music, and socio-political tirades, visual and vocal phenomenon Mac employs gender-bending surrealism to explore the human condition and challenge the contemporary culture of fear. Obie Award-winner David Drake directs.

For 2008 Feast has received increases in core funding for 2008 including a special one-off payment from the Department of Premier and Cabinet of $30,000. The Adelaide City Council and South Australian Tourism Commission have both contributed an extra $5,000 each towards the festival and the South Australian Youth Arts Board has increased its funding by $9,150.

Feast has also received funding for the first time from; The Australia Council: $20,000 Richard Llewellyn Trust: $4,781 and the Arts SA Community Arts Development: $60,000 (over two Festivals). A recent market research study on Feast, conducted by Flinders University, reported that the Festival has a $1.7 million positive economic impact on the State.

In the area of sponsorships a new international media sponsorship package valued at $18,000 has been negotiated with leading Asian media company Fridae.com, Adelaide-based web design company Digital Monkey will provide sponsorship towards the cost of Feast's new website. Feast earlier announced a three Festival sponsorship with Evolution Publishing, Australia's leading gay and lesbian publishing house that also has a major online presence.
