FESTIVAL OF SYDNEY - As is the tradition, Sydney Festival kicks off with big free events suitable for the whole family:

For the first time in 2004 the Sydney Festival Opening Event will be on the Olympic Boulevard at Sydney Olympic Park. From 8th January for three nights only visit the amazing OF ANGELS AND LIGHT. Music, a light show and acrobatic feats combine to create a massive entertainment. The main feature starts at 8:45pm, however audiences are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the pre-show entertainment.

Also from the 8th January on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House Korean artist Nam June Paik delivers two astounding works. TRANSMISSION and 32 CARS FOR THE 20th CENTURY � PLAY MOZART's REQUIEM QUIETLY.

PAIK was born on in the 1930's, in Seoul Korea. He studied music history, art history, and philosophy at the University of Tokyo. He then went to Germany in 1956 to continue the study of music history at the University of Munich. In Germany he met Karlheinz Stockhausen
and John Cage who inspired Paik into electronic art. Both composers, Stockhausen and Cage influenced Paik through their ideas of composition and performance. Paik worked with Stockhausen in a studio for Electronic Music. He then got involved with the post neo-Dada art
movement, Fluxus. "Fluxus" was founded by George Maciunas who invited Paik to join his group of artists. Then he returned to Japan to conduct experiments with electromagnets and colour television, alongside electronic engineer Shuya Abe. The rise of new technology
led him to use the video image. Today he is known as the father of video art and influences the younger generation of artists.

More of the work of NAM JUNE PAIK is featured at The Art Gallery Of NSW until the 8th February. From 20th � 24th January on the forecourt of the Museum of Contemporary Art Legs On The Wall appear in EORA CROSSING a gravity defying extravaganza using the CBD, MCA and Circular Quay as its backdrop. You are encouraged to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art before the 8:45pm performance, for the period of this season the MCA
will be open until 8:30pm, entry is free of charge.

TALKING CULTURE offers four free interactive events. January 11th at the MUSEUM OF Contemporary Art 2:30pm Michael Snelling, Director of Brisbanes Institute of Modern Art
speaks about the work of TRACEY MOFFAT a free retrospective exhibition of Moffats work will appear at the MCA until 29th February.

January 18th at the Domain Theatre in the Art Gallery of NSW at 2pm a panel of experts will discuss the relationship between science and art and the work TULP a performance art installation at the AGNSW.

January 21st at Sydney Town Hall at 6pm Choreographer Meg Stewart talks about the work she has been doing with Zurich's Schauspielhaus At Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Verbrugghen Hall, the curator of HOUSE TO HOUSE Brett Dean will discuss the relationship between the natural world and music � a fascinating talk not to be missed, January 23rd at 6pm.

URBAN SAFARI is a show for the whole family at the OVERSEAS PASSENGER TERMINAL forecourt in The Rocks from 21st � 25th January at 3pm and 6pm. Come see extinct creatures roaming the area and hear amazing stories told by Dr Wes Hall.

For anyone into Latino music, get along to the famously popular BARCARDI LATINO FESTIVAL at Darling Harbour Latin Dance Classes from 7pm and Bands from 8pm. What better way to get your rocks off, and possibly get fit for Summer. From 8th til 11th and then from 14th until the 18th January, FREE.

Of Course the DOMAIN Concert Series is back with JAZZ IN THE DOMAIN on January 17th at 8pm and SYMPHONY IN THE DOMAIN on 24th January at 8pm. Both concerts free of charge. Bring a picnic and have a ball under the stars.
