Freefall
10 December - 19 December
Opening: Wednesday 10 December, 6pm
SASA Gallery, Kaurna Building
Corner Fenn Place and Hindley Street, Adelaide
Exhibition hours: 11am - 5pm daily
More than ninety emerging visual artists graduating from the South Australian School of Art (SASA) will be showcasing their work at the Visual Arts Honours and Graduates exhibition in December.
Called Freefall, this showcase will be the final exhibition held at the SASA Gallery for 2008 and is one of the highlights of the South Australian visual arts calendar. This year’s event features an impressive range of contemporary artworks produced by graduates from all of the different studios at SASA including ceramics, drawing, glass, jewellery, new media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and textiles.
“The annual Bachelor of Visual Art and Honours Graduate exhibition is an important milestone for graduates and a great way to launch the careers of these emerging visual artists,” says exhibiting graduate and co-curator David Sprod. “This exhibition is a collaborative, student-run initiative with the assistance from SASA Gallery Director Mary Knights.” Graduates Victoria Bowes and Michelle Rodgers and David Sprod together form the Freefall curatorial team.
A one hundred page catalogue will also be published in conjunction with Freefall, including a guest essay by Maria Zagala, the Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the Art Gallery of South Australia. This publication was made possible with the assistance of the Helpmann Academy and is an important way for emerging artists to raise their profile nationally and internationally.
The Helpmann Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The seven partner schools that make up the Academy are the Adelaide Centre for the Arts and Vizarts O’Halloran Hill (tafeSA); Adelaide Central School of Art; Elder Conservatorium of Music (University of Adelaide); Flinders Drama & Screen Production (Flinders University) and South Australian School of Art (UniSA).
