Bluesfest wins
2008 International Greener Festival Award
Second year running for the Byron Bay event
August 21, 2008 : The International East Coast Blues and Roots Festival is extremely proud to announce it is - for the second year running - an international winner in The Greener Festival Awards for 2008.
These awards have been announced by the website - AgreenerFestival.com, an influential UK based not-for-profit organization.
Eighteen UK and international festivals are the first recipients of the prestigious 2008 Greener Festival Award for their efforts in promoting environmentally friendly music festivals. In the UK, recipients of the leading eco-award included Latitude, the Glastonbury Festival, the Camden Green Fair and the Cambridge Folk Festival, all praised by the award organizers for their green efforts.
The Award is based on a seven part questionnaire which covers event management, travel and transport plans, CO2 emissions, fair trade, waste management and recycling, water management and noise pollution. Points are awarded for festivals which can show an active plan to promote public transport, reduce on-site waste, recycle and compost wherever possible, re-use water and use sustainable power. Festivals are expected to have a coherent environmental policy and Agreenerfestival.com has environmental auditors who visit as many festival sites as possible to assess how festivals implement their plans.
Winning the award for a second year, a Greener Festival’s environmental auditor said that Bluesfest had a 'very effective' environmental policy with a host of good ideas and the festival was 'really setting high standards in communicating sustainability to audience members'. The festival has good travel and transport plans and excellent recycling on-site - volunteers patrol the site using anything from drama to poems to song to highlight environmentally practices
AGreenerFestival.com is committed to helping music, arts events and festivals around the world adopt environmentally efficient practices. By providing education resources, information and discussion about how environmentally efficient methods are currently employed at festivals, the organisation is promoting the establishment of greener festivals around the world.
Peter Noble, director of the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival said, “Bluesfest is all about a marriage of diverse cultures, religions and beliefs - unifying factors which bring everyone together. Many of the artists we book believe strongly in presenting issues of social and environmental justice.
“Doing ‘the right thing’ is what should be done anyway, and we have up till now not publicized our ongoing commitment to social and environmental responsibility. However, I see the increasing importance of public awareness on all environmental issues and to lead by demonstration.
"When we do move to our permanent new site, it will be greener still. We will be installing wind and solar power, and we will have bio-diesel. We will strive to be the best and we will have the same motives through the whole festival”.
Here are just some of the ongoing Bluesfest initiatives which have contributed to this award:
We actively promote Waste Wise – Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.
We sponsor the BEC (Byron Environment Centre) BIN-YA-BUTT concept.
We only allow recyclable packaging and plastic on site (with clearly marked recycling stations around the festival).
All food stalls on site use compostable plates and utensils.
All plastic glasses and cardboard generated at the festival are recycled and reused in the production of other items.
No glass is on site.
Car parking income is shared back to schools after costs.
Local firms are used wherever possible.
After each Bluesfest event, the Land is returned to its original state with the policy: Aim for Zero Waste and ‘leave no trace’.
Bluesfest works closely with Veolia Environmental Services (VES) and the focus is to ensure that the site is recycled to its fullest potential. Bluesfest transfers general waste to TiTree BioEnergy facility - a state of the art site converting waste into clean energy.
Bluesfest always tries to find ‘green’ solutions and are committed to the principles of environmental sustainability.
