Beats Working
Harbour Drive
Obese Records
RRP: AUD $24.95
Welcome to the first release from new Aussie crew Beats Working.
Beats Working is Handsome Dan, Mullut and J.B. on vocals, with cuts and percussion provided by Helmy. What I like most about it all is the constant up-beat feel, and the Sydney Harbour theme that runs all through it. Not exactly what you’d expect from such an edgy crew, but then again we don’t do Gangster Rap in this country, why should we?
“I’d do anything for you; anything you want me to, all I want is music, music, music!”
Lyrics from an old song that was proudly sung on Young Talent Time in the day, and before that was a stand out by The Ames Brothers… now it’s emerged from the phoenix flames as a sample riff in Beats Working’s new album Harbour Drive. Who said Aussie Hip Hop doesn’t stand up for anyone over 40? Not me that’s for sure. This track alone means youngsters and down with it hip oldsters can toss this mega funky album onto the spinner and come in trumps.
There’s a good deal of what they still call ‘hard core’ or ‘offensive language’ peppered throughout the album, so it’s best to be prepared for that – keeping in mind it’s really just the ‘F’ word being bandied about so it’s not going to contaminate too many innocent minds is it? Over all this is a great addition to the growing collection of up beat stylish and boppy Aussie Hip Hop making it’s way around the country from New South Wales.
