I am Art: Unique Wearable Art
18 to 31 July 2008
Opening 6-8pm Friday 18 July
Irving Baby! 83 Hindley Street, Adelaide
I am Art exhibition presents a series of unique T-shirts by a selection of South Australian emerging artists.
Presenting contemporary artwork in a contemporary way, the artists use a range of mediums and techniques, and draw on personal experience to create one-off or limited edition T-shirts with original designs.
“In today’s world many of us are desperately trying to express ourselves and create an identity that is unique and different,” says exhibition curator Emma Bitmead. “This is a feat that often seems impossible amongst mass marketing and globalisation.”
I am Art is a celebration of the individual and the idea of uniqueness in a world of ‘sameness’. The eclectic mix of designs includes embroidery, screen-printing, photography and digital illustration.
I am Art features emerging artists from the South Australian School of Art, UniSA: Andrew Crooks, Annie Thai, Celia Fraser, Chloe Langford, Claudia Linder, Daniel Withey, Elle Dawson-Scott, Fruzsi Kenez, Genivieve Dawson Scott, Liam Cockshell, Louise Vodic, Mary Sladdin, Nic Maumill, Samantha Webb, Rose Blackthorn, Taylor Parham, Emma Hillman and James Glohe.
The T-shirts will be one-offs or part of a limited edition line. With each T-shirt available 'made to order' the unique garment becomes a work of art rather than a fashion item with a limited life span.
