Support Indigenous Literacy Day
Wednesday 3 September
Authors, musicians, sportsmen and politicians join forces to help us celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day (ILD). Most events are free and open to the general public but we urge people to make a donation to help us reach our target goal of $250,000.
On Tuesday 26 August at 11am, at the Lodge, Therese Rein will host a special event with six children from three very remote Indigenous communities in Northern Territory.
The event is to raise awareness and funds for the coming Indigenous Literacy Day on September 3 which aims to raise $250,000 or more to help address the crisis in literacy in remote Indigenous communities.
The children, aged 9-16 years old from Barunga, Manyallaluk and Wugularr communities, will present their own stories to Therese Rein. It is the first time that these children have travelled from their communities, flown on a plane and visited the capital city.
Indigenous students from Queanbeyan, Karabar and Melba-Copland Secondary School will also present their own work to Therese Rein and help celebrate the importance of stories and storytelling.
In attendance are some of Australia's most celebrated writers and ambassadors for the Indigenous Literacy Project including Alexis Wright, Tara June Winch, David Malouf, Andy Griffiths, Anita Heiss and Kate Grenville.
Other dignitaries include Gabi Hollows, Andrew Want (Fred Hollows Foundation), David Gaunt (Chair of the Indigenous Literacy Project) and Suzy Wilson, Founder of the Indigenous Literacy Project.
All Australians can assist by buying a book on September 3 at participating bookshops or by sending the Fred Hollows Foundation a donation.
