Inland Empire
David Lynch
In the 1970’s David Lynch shifted the poles of film story-telling with ‘Eraserhead’, in the 1980’s he engaged mainstream audiences with ‘The Elephant Man’ and ‘Blue Velvet’ and in the 1990’s ‘Twin Peaks’ and ‘Wild at Heart’ elevated his status as a film-maker and introduced actors like Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern and Isabella Rossellini to global audiences. Now Laura Dern co-produces and stars in ‘Inland Empire’ his latest work of mystery and trashy over-kill.
Dern plays actress Nikki Grace embarking on a career boosting project; her first steps are light and controlled as she meets the film director (Jeremy Irons), producer (Harry Dean Stanton) and co-star (Justin Theroux). As she becomes ensconced in the project and co-star her character is exposed to various subtlety bizarre experiences; her control disintegrates into catatonic inertia.
Lynch enjoys making his audience and actors work overtime. At one hundred and eighty minutes this is a long and slow process filled with atypical Lynch murkiness and the greatest part is left for the viewer to figure out for themselves. Laura Dern does a magnificent job and there are many fleeting cameos from big name celebrities that may surprise. What does it all mean? Good question.
