Adelaide Cinematheque

July 29th 2011 01:49

Adelaide 2011 Cinematheque (Season 2)

A must for all cinephiles, launches on Monday 8 August, 7.30pm at the Mercury Cinema with an unmissable screening of 1945 romantic classic Les Enfants Du Paradis (Children of Paradise).

The Cinematheque is dedicated to screening significant films from the history of cinema and this year's program includes a diverse range of classic and contemporary films showcasing directors, actors and thematic series.

Set among the Parisian theatre scene, Marcel Carne's Les Enfants Du Paradis is a tragic tale of the beautiful courtesan Garance and the four men who love her.

Other Season 2 highlights include Terrence Malick: The Restless Search for Epiphany. In the wake of Terrence Malick's recent release, Tree of Life, this season will feature a selection of his haunting and abstract films, including his 1973 debut Badlands and the 2006 retelling of Pocahontas, The New World, starring Christian Bale and Colin Farrell.

Lovers of Australian film were saddened by news of the demise earlier this year of iconic Australian actor Bill Hunter. The Australian Everyman: Bill Hunter pays tribute to the celebrated actor who appeared in more than 60 films. The season features Peter Weir's emblematic Gallipoli (1981), Philip Noyce's Newsfront (1978), Craig Lahiff's Fever (1988) and the unforgettable 1994 comedy Muriel's Wedding (PJ Hogan).

A celebration of one of the most recognisable and irresistible cinematic genres, Dark Seduction: Film Noir's Bad Girls looks at the sultry temptresses whose charms would seduce a man into committing unheard of crimes. Don't miss Robert Siodmak's murderous and beautiful love story The Killers (1946), based on a Ernest Hemingway story and starring Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster or Orson Wells' enthralling 1947 mystery, Lady From Shanghai.

The 80s Brat Pack, a program of 80s cult classics includes John Hughes widely loved 1985 comedy The Breakfast Club and Joel Schumacher's St Elmo's Fire (1985).

Breakfast Club
The 2011 Cinematheque season finishes with a special Christmas Screening of Joe Dante's 1984 comic horror cult classic Gremlins.

At the end of selected sessions, members are invited to join Mercury staff and volunteers for a complimentary drink after the movie, thanks to Barossa Valley Brewing. Stay and chat about your favourite actors, auteurs, scenes and themes, talk about what you loved and didn't love and what you want to see more of on the big screen at Cinematheque.

The full Season 2 program is available at: mercurycinema.org.au Screenings are only available to society members, but anyone can join and becoming a member is easy and great value. Sign up on the spot at any Ten News Adelaide Cinematheque session or phone 8410 0979.

Slava Grigoryan announced as Artistic Director for
2012 Adelaide International Guitar Festival

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier has announced Slava Grigoryan as the Artistic Director for the Festival Centre’s 2012 Adelaide International Guitar Festival which will be held from 9-12 August, 2012.

“Slava Grigoryan, one of Australia’s most significant cultural ambassadors, directed the very successful 2010 Adelaide International Guitar Festival and took the event to a whole new level so we are delighted that he will be directing the 2012 Festival. We are really looking forward to continuing to work with him,” Douglas said.

“Slava drew from his enormous musical expertise and international connections as one of Australia’s finest musicians to deliver a Festival that audiences well and truly embraced. It is testament to his great work that 13% of all tickets for the 2010 Festival were bought by interstate or overseas patrons,” he said.

“Following the incredible experience of last year’s Festival and the feedback from artists and audiences, I’m very excited to be working on a second Festival,” said Slava Grigoryan.

“There are so many extraordinary guitarists doing very exciting things with the instrument around the world and I’m really looking forward to bringing some of them together in Adelaide in 2012.”

The Adelaide International Guitar Festival continues to garner a reputation for presenting some of the finest musicians from around the world and Australia. Reviews and feedback from audience members and performing artists prove that the Festival is becoming an unmissable event:

“Organisers pulled off an impressive coup this time in securing Australia’s own internationally acclaimed virtuoso Slava Grigoryan as the festival’s artistic director. The classical guitarist has certainly put his stamp on the event, using his network and knowledge to attract some truly world class acts to Australia”
Chris Johnson, Canberra Times

“his (Manuel Barrueco) playing makes me want to get on a plane and fly to Adelaide. Lucky audiences there.”
Margaret Throsby, Classic FM

“It was great to be back at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival, just like the first time I performed in the Festival, audiences proved that they know how to rock!” Mason Rack, Australia

Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts, the Hon John Hill congratulated the Adelaide Festival Centre for again appointing such a distinguished classical guitarist as Artistic Director of the Adelaide International Guitar Festival.

“Slava put together a diverse and engaging program which was widely acclaimed and I am sure that the 2012 program will be just as amazing,” Minister Hill said.

Slava Grigoryan has forged a prolific reputation as an international classical guitar virtuoso. Born in Kazakhstan, he immigrated with his family to Australia in 1981 and began studying the guitar at the age of six. By the time he was 17 he was signed to the Sony Classical Label. His relationship with Sony Classical, ABC Classics in Australia, and now his own label Which Way Music has led to the release of more than 20 solo and collaborative albums spanning a vast range of musical genres.

His first tour, at the young age of 18 was with guitar legends Paco Pena and Leo Kottke. Since then he’s travelled the world as a soloist in recitals and with orchestras in Europe, Asia and North America, and has performed at dozens of national and international arts festivals and guitar festivals. He has won ARIA awards for Best Classical Album and performs regularly as a soloist with all of Australia’s major orchestras. Internationally, his performances have taken him to many of the world’s leading concert halls and festivals.

Collaborations have played a huge part in Grigoryan’s career, most notably the guitar duo with his brother Leonard Grigoryan. Their touring has seen them perform throughout Europe, America, Asia, Russia and the Middle-East. Other collaborations have been with ensembles such as Goldner, Flinders and Australian String Quartets in Australia, the Endellion, Skampa and Chillingirian quartets in Europe, the Southern Cross Soloists, pianist Michael Kieren-Harvey and baritone Jose Carbo and Grigoryan was a founding member of Saffire, the Australian guitar quartet. He has also collaborated with numerous composers and premiered many new works, significantly with composers William Lovelady, Nigel Westlake and Shaun Rigney.

Grigoryan has also had long term collaborations with MGT - a guitar trio featuring jazz icons Ralph Towner and Wolfgang Muthspiel, and a duo with Austrian electric bassist Al Slavik. A more recent project has been Band of Brothers, featuring Leonard Grigoryan and brothers, Joseph and James Tawadros, in a fusion of contemporary jazz, classical and middle-eastern music.

The New York Times describes Slava as “A guitar player of uncommon originality and authority. Musicality, expressivity and daring …a singular talent.”

Slava Grigoryan was born in 1976 in Kazakhstan and immigrated with his family to Australia in 1981. As a major prizewinner at the Tokyo International Classical Guitar Competition, Slava was signed by Sony Music Entertainment Australia under the Sony Classical Label in 1995 and has since released four solo albums.

During Adelaide's month-long cavalcade of alternative & fringe dwelling celebration of the arts the Professional Writing Department of AC ARTS is producing SPOKE for the first time from 22 February, 2011

Bringing a broad range of wordsmiths together of all ages, genders and cultural backgrounds to present a series of workshops, discussions and performance presentations, SPOKE Writers' Festival provides a festival for all writers to extend their networks and share their work. Not the usual ring-in novelists from interstate, but local practitioners from South Australia.

Spokesperson for the Festival David Jobling says, "We named our festival SPOKE for the dual meanings of the word. Festivals generally provide everyone with an opportunity to interact and reflect on what's been said, but we also acknowledge that apart from the obvious past tense of 'speak', writers are like the radial members of a wheel 'joining the hub to the rim'. Their ideas link people via the page, stage, virtual platform, whatever... Their works feed our cravings for communication, reflection and inspiration. Once it's broken down, you find the out-put of writers is a vital spoke supporting the wheel of every creative process. Be it static storytelling, prosaic poetry, or kinetic entertainment, writers writing words has something to do with it and, we find the imagery of a wheel very assuring as it represents one of the most significant inventions in the history of our species, along with words, language and writing.

So, to celebrate this age old activity, SPOKE offers a short series of interactive workshops, showcases and forums, bound to invigorate, entertain, challenge and inspire anyone interested in writing and reading."

The SPOKE festival deliberately showcases genres that don't necessarily find a voice in other writer's festivals. Jobling says, "Poetry, spoken word, play scripts ... not just prose; it's more energetic and involving than just prose. The AC ARTS facility provides a brilliantly dynamic purpose built setting for our labyrinth of activities. Instead of swatting flies or worrying about sunburn you can relax and focus on the moment at hand. It's got air conditioning, access for people with disabilities, internal refreshment areas and toilets. In every event the building provides an opportunity to visit some very energetic creative people in a comfortable environment."

Jobling insists, "It's a mini-festival, the whole thing is a highlight! The SPOKE Breaks a leg showcase/forum, Improv Poetry Workshop; every poet should take a walk on the wild side with the spontaneous poetry jammers at the Improv Poetry Slam. Daredevil poets work their passionate raw roars and rhythms without nets! Best described as entertaining and inspiring, these improvised lexicon leaping events are very big in the UK and the US. Now for the first time in South Australia, Spoke makes IMPROETRY with our Improv Poetry Workshop followed by a live Improv Poetry Slam with cash prizes. No one should miss this," he enthuses.

The SPOKE-N First and Loud-N-local events present aboriginal extensions of hip hop and rap. Both events showcase wordsmiths from all over South Australia, here for a rare gathering of indigenous writers to hold their own series of workshops and meetings concurrently with SPOKE as well as making presentations of their work in these sessions.

"SPOKE is created by writers, so we know that while every writer does love a challenge, they don't all want to be in a spotlight, so we've got something for those scribes as well," explains Jobling. "Come get a glimpse of the new frontier at the Virtual Sense forum. Hear how writers interact with new technologies and push the electronic envelope. SPOKE Puts out is another unmissable event. Startlingly short original plays presented live, hosted by Rob de Kok.

"Rob has been busy recruiting material via SA Writers' Theatre and other networks, so this promises to be a very entertaining event".

The SPOKE team is made up of professional writing students, graduates and teaching staff of the AC ARTS Professional Writing Advanced Diploma Course, Adelaide TAFE.

SPOKE Virtual Sense
22 Feb 2011 7.00 - 8.30 pm X-Space

SPOKE Virtual Sense host, internet legend*, writer, broadcaster and performer David Jobling says, "Since the mid-1990's writers have been debating the future of publishing, electronic books, blogs and the effects of new technology on the way we create and present our work. How do we make the internet work for us? Is it possible to use it as a tool? Who is doing what and is any of it working? SPOKE offers an opportunity to ask some questions, discuss the answers and get up to speed."

"In the 1990's I was writing material for a cable channel movie website (SBS Movie Channel) and started an email subscribers-list called Queerstage with support from queer.org at Sydney University. By the time I was studying at the NIDA Playwrights' Studio (1999) I had been on-line for a few years and was well aware of the massive resource available on-line, but I was one of the few at the time. Now, a decade later many writers have taken up publishing their work on the net, blogging and using the net to earn some money," says Jobling. "SPOKE Virtual Sense will be an opportunity to hear from some of these writers and to talk about it all."

Will you be there to heckle, jeer or applaud Adelaide's daredevil wordsmiths? Do you dare join in yourself and ride free without training wheels? Come along to the Improv Poetry Slam and put yourself to the test.

Step up and step OUT of your safety zone. Live life on the edge of words and performance.

Adelaide Fringe Festival Children's Writing Panel
Face the Future!
Marquee, Level 2, AC Arts, Light Square, Thursday, 24 Feb, 2011 4-6.00pm

SPOKE Word Festival is opening its arms to a magnificent 7 of children's writers and commentators. Face the Future will explore the shifting boundaries of what it is to be an author for the 0-25 year olds, in the age of cross-platforms, reluctant readers and never-ending movie sequels. Up for discussion will be hot topics such as- how important is it for an author to stay up to date with current trends? What makes a good writer? How do author's gain publicity?

Sean Williams is a Number 1 New York Times bestselling author and has published over 75 short stories and 35 novels, including six books in the Star Wars franchise. His latest foray into children's writing is the series The Fixers, and Troubletwisters, co-written with Garth Nix.

Robert Moore - his first children's book Raspberry Rat was published in 2003 and Map followed in 2004. He has just completed two more junior novels. His first picture book About Face was released in November 2010 with IPad and IPhone apps. Adelaide animators Monkeystack are the illustrators and they plan to transfer the story into an animated feature at a later date.

Shane Bevin is a multimedia designer and animator with a talent for character and story design. He currently is involved with Monkeystack and is working with Robert Moore on About Face.

Rosanne Hawke is the author of over 15 books as well as being a teacher, writing workshop facilitator and a storyteller for children. Roseanne has always been interested in writing, and is a true advocate for carrying around pen and paper to jot down ideas. Spurred on by her children during a 10 year stint in Pakistan, Rosanne honed her writing skills. Her most recent accolade was being awarded the Carclew Fellowship at Writers' Week, 2008.

Marianne Musgrove is an award-winning children's author, former social worker and a descendant of King Henry VIII's librarian, so you could say books are in her blood. Her titles include The Worry Tree, Don't Breathe a Word and the Lucy series, all of which have been translated into different languages.

Vikki Wakefield is a second year professional Writing student at AC Arts who has recently secured a two book deal with text for her YA novels. The first will be launched in February.

Julie Wells is the newly appointed National President of the Children's Book Council of Australia and has many years experience as a teacher-librarian.

Sue Fleming (Chair) is a published writer in a variety of genres and also finds time to jointly coordinate the Professional Writing program at the Adelaide College of the Arts.

SPOKE Breaks a leg

FRI. 25 FEB. 2011 @ 4.30 - 6.30 pm

You rarely hear from people who write for the stage at 'writers festivals' or 'events'. Usually you hear from playwrights at theatre subscriber-only events or indirectly from the Director at a post-show matinee Q&A.

SPOKE pokes a big hole in that velvet veil and showcases those who work with the page for the stage!

We invite you to hurdle the velvet rope with MC Rob De Kok and sneak a peek at the stage craft of Rosalba Clemente, Chris Tugwell and Edwin Kemp-Attrill.

The playbill:
Youth theatre devised performance
Edwin Kemp-Attrill on the couch with Rob
X-Ray by Chris Tugwell - excerpt performance
Chris Tugwell on the couch with Rob
Archipelago by Michele Saint-Yves* - excerpt performance
Rosalba Clemente on the couch with Rob
Panel discussion and audience Q&A

M.C. Rob De Kok is a SPOKE Committee member and noted director and writer for screen and stage.

Panellists:

Edwin Kemp-Attrill is Artistic Director of ActNow Theatre for Social Change and works with Urban Youth and Vitalstatistix theatre companies.

Chris Tugwell is a Prof Writ. Program lecturer. His play X-Ray about David Hicks in Guantanemo was the "sensation" of Fringe 2004 and its ABC radio adaptation was awarded the Bronze Medal for Best Drama Special at the New York Festivals' 2006 International Radio Awards.

Rosalba Clemente mentors a current Prof Writ. Student*, Michele Saint-Yves.
Having established her career as an actor and theatre director, Rosalba is an emerging playwright with a play currently being developed through Playwriting Australia. Her first play 'Helly's Magic Cup' won the Rodney Seaborn Award in 2007.

SPOKE Puts out
In an age when most entertainment is delivered via pixels on a screen we present live words in 3D! Living drama using ancient people based technology. "Short plays and mini-performances will reveal whole lives in a minute and worlds in two. Live and in colour," says documentary film-maker, tutor and writer Rob de Kok, "We may even resort to giving out 3D glasses to those who are accustomed to viewing entertainment in 2D," he jokes.

Although Alex Broun's juggernaut Short and Sweet has made it as far afield as India, so far it hasn't reached Adelaide, but the growing popularity of short plays has not gone unnoticed in the City of Churches, so the festival will be presenting renditions of short works when SPOKE puts out.

SPOKE PUTS OUT!
Adelaide Festival Fringe Mini-drama performance opportunity
X-Space, AC Arts, Light Square
Friday 25 Feb, 2011
7 - 8.30 pm

SPOKE is rustling up any takers for an 'instant playlet' evening during the 2011 Fringe.

Now in 3D! Words that walk and talk! Join us as we thin-slice debatably the oldest entertainment of all time - live theatre - using today's people-based technology. Mini-performances will reveal whole lives in a minute and worlds in two. Bring your micro-dramas to share on an open stage. Use audience volunteers, or your own actors to animate your words or maybe just sit back and watch as brief vignettes from the lives, dreams and pens of others come to life.

Note that it's not improv that we are seeking here. We are showcasing small scripts that work in a very limited time. Pieces should have been written, revised, and possibly even trialled or rehearsed beforehand.

It will be a night of very short, plays- or possibly 'telling slices of longer plays of such quality as to be worthy of a little glimpse through the curtain'.

In allowing meaningful extracts from larger works we ask that this event be respected for what it is, and not used as a showcase or promotion medium for Fringe or other stage events.

Some details: Cast size is unlimited, hand props are allowed, but no scenery. Basic 'set and forget' stage lighting will be provided on the X-Space stage, a blackout used as start and finish brackets for each piece.

There is no adjudication or feedback provided- simply two minutes between playlets for casts to change, and another minute or so for a brief intro to the next performance.

We emphasize brief intro- a minimum of words on the cast/company/author before each play commences- please no explanatory orations 'to set the scene'.

In this experimental forum the art of the performed text will speak for itself, sink or swim, naked and unafraid, to engender perhaps quite individual interpretations in the audience without program notes or spoken pamphlet.

To bring a modicum of control into the picture, and in an effort to keep a grip on both quality and quantity there will be a curatorial process before the event. Anyone interested in performing please contact me on the email below. The first/best 20 one or two minute plays will be scheduled.

If there's time after that on the night we may take work 'from the floor', in a similar manner that poetry readings allow open mic time. We're happy to see people come to the party with a few copies of their script in their hands and to cast it then and there using audience volunteers.

I would you appreciate you putting the call out to your students/members to gauge their interest in this event. Please don't hesitate to call me on the numbers below if there is any confusion above. I appreciate that we're walking a fine line here between structure and non, but we feel that it's in that vague, small zone where the elusive alchemy of creativity and entertainment lurks.

Summadayze

January 2nd 2011 11:16
Summadayze 2010

Sumadayze kick started the new year in Adelaide in ways I couldn’t even begin to predict. As I arrived at Rymill Park on the East end of Adelaide I was feeling quite flushed as I’d done the right thing and used my bicycle to get there. A stinking hot day on New Years Eve had left the streets pretty quiet for new years morning around my place so I set off from home, arrived in good time, locked up the bike and collected my ticket. My plus one was unable to attend, so I was collecting my ticket and doing the whole gig solo. Easy enough, I thought, to wander quietly and soak in the atmosphere. Listen up for the music that drew me towards it.

No sooner had I stepped into line, when a beautiful black police dog came and wedged its nose into my butt cheeks. For a moment there I thought I was being greeted in that way doggies say ‘hello’, and I was in a way, but this doggie was saying ‘you smell like pot’. So the police took me aside and went through all the proceedings in a polite and not overly dramatic or threatening way. I was completely astonished. I did not have any drugs on me, and was not there to score any or hook any up, ‘I’m reviewing the music, it’s not really a day off, I’m here with the purpose to remain sober so I can observe and reflect,’ I explained.

After giving my details, being searched, having my pockets examined, all of that, I was set free to wander inside; I had an apology and an explanation about the process. Evidently I could have sat somewhere and been exposed to marijuana, and I wondered how long it had been since I’d sat in any number of places where there may have been residue of bong water or pot. It’s difficult to really know under the circumstances, but because they were polite about it and I was quite clearly innocent – sure I look like an old hippy, but I also look like a wizard and a monk, a rock star, and the serial killer ‘Bob’ from ‘Twin Peaks’ but that doesn’t make me any of those things. I went and settled on the lawn by the Almost Famous stage and chilled for a while. Ajax, Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw kept the spirits up. Singing live at these gigs must be a challenge. Dust, grass seed, dry breeze, humid, all sorts of reasons why singing could be awkward. Lisa Shaw came out with her magically smooth vocal styling and hit the nail on the head. Lisa presented with her beautiful personality, warm smiling face and a truly great strength in her voice. After a few songs from her and some dubious rain starting to drop I moved around for a little walk. The rain didn’t develop as the clouds moved over and sun shone.

On the Mainstage as the crowds gathered Riva Starr was really thumping things along. I find one needs the crowd in the main area to absorb the sound. The bass was a little heavy for me while there were so few people. Later in the day it would be so packed around the area I would only observe from the bleachers. I was ultimately attracted to some of the fine rapping and the groove end of the scale. There was so much room to dance under the trippy HQ tower, I couldn’t help myself, and that’s where things started to spin out a little.

I’ve done Future Music Festival, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Big Day Out, Blues Fest, Parklife and plenty of live gigs. I guess I don’t think too much about what part of the country I’m in when I start to actually enjoy the music and dance. Here in Adelaide I guess I also stick out in a crowd like this given I’m 50 this year, and the main age of other punters seems to be around 20-something. I have long grey hair – so plenty of the youngsters get a laugh or a shock when I pass them in the crowd. I hear comments like ‘it’s my grand-dad’ (seriously). This year, 2011, it seems the hi5 has really come home to roost in Adelaide. I was meeting them all over. And once, in Sydney, we used to laugh at the Japanese tourists who jumped off a bus to photograph a tourist attraction without seeming to actually experience it beyond the potential postcard it was being captured in. As my day progressed I discovered that young folk are really keen to jump up next to you and grab a photograph of themselves with you. It’s the phone camera thing. All of a sudden I’m surrounded by some crew – didn’t even see them coming, they’ve all grouped around me, some young woman is taking a shot. They move on... what a great new friendship that was... not. The first few times it happened I thought it was a bit odd, but by the time I had danced my little old hundred year old feet off I (each foot is fifty this year) had been captured in more shots than I could possibly count, and I didn’t meet most of them – however I did meet a few, and had a dance with actual people not just my shadow.

The overall groove was wild as the day moved into night. The late sunset here due to daylight saving paid off, and dusk in Rymill Park is a magical time. Sumadayze is probably the most amazing place for any music enthusiast to be on New Years Day inside the South Australian borders.
The type of music enthusiast you would be is one who enjoys a beat and a bit of space to dance. A touch of rock and funk jazzed up with very groovy dance beats and some trippy dub. I didn’t notice any big trouble, no fights, not bad vibes.

Horrorshow, Urthboy, Madcap, Tinnie Tempah were all as feisty as get up with slick rhymes busting out. The giant purple mushrooms on either side of the stage were fun to glimpse every so often under the leafy shade. Food stalls and body art market area didn’t really pull me, but others seemed involved. I didn’t drink but for the free water fountain in the park. There were a great deal of people drinking, but I didn’t notice any growling at bars or line-up’s out of control.

What I did notice was a fresh and fun respectful group of people who mingled and enjoyed some ground-shakingly-good music presented by some of the most hip acts you could hope for. Quite the triumph on behalf of the team who put it all together.

Sharam (Deep Dish) - USA

As one half of the all-conquering Deep Dish duo alongside Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia, Sharam Tayebi has reached heights that few DJ/Producers can only dream of. An artist of rare and exceptional talent, his DJ sets are famed for captivating club crowds from Miami to Ibiza, while his solo productions (including 2006's monster hit 'P.A.T.T (Party Al The Time) continue to break new ground and consistently find their way into the CD wallets and record crates of the world's DJing elite. From his acclaimed Global Underground compilation 'Duba' and his highly anticipated forthcoming artist album 'Get Wild', to his daily duties looking after a trio of coveted co-owned labels with Ali (Yoshitoshi Recordings, Deep Dish Records and Shinichi Recordings); Sharam is a revered electronic music trendsetter that has stood the test of time and forges the future with every studio session he completes and every upfront tune he drops.

Roger Sanchez - USA

Where you know him as 'the S-Man' or 'Roger S', Grammy Award-winning producer and iconic DJ, Roger Sanchez, is without question one of the biggest and most influential names in the history of House music. In a groundbreaking career that spans nearly 30 years, the native New Yorker has wowed crowds in every corner of the globe with his trademark thumping, sexy and soulful brand of House, and, in turn, has helped define the tag of superstar DJ for generations to come. From his legendary performances at the world's most exclusive events to his chart-topping hits (including 'Turn On The Music' and 'Another Chance'), and from his seminal label 'Stealth' to his award-winning radio show and acclaimed compilation and party series 'Release Yourself'; Roger Sanchez is a true master, pioneer and innovator of the global EDM domain.

The Ian Carey Project - USA

Having sold over one million records worldwide and having toured the planet a number of times over playing DJ gigs and live PA sets, in 2009 American-born electronic musician Ian Carey is a global House music phenomenon. An established and highly successful Producer since the late 1990s, his catalogue of hits include summertime anthems like 'Lose Control', 'Say What You Want' and last year's chart-destroying 'Get Shaky' (under his current guise 'The Ian Carey Project'), while his self-run record label 'GFAB Records' is regarded as one of the best in the business and has peddled the musical wares of key industry icons and House music heavyweights including Mark Knight, Paul Rincon and Soul Avengerz. Always funky, always fresh and always up for raising and rocking a party, The Ian Carey Project is an explosion of 100% pure House music that moves the body, ignites the mind and soothes the soul. It's time to get shaky with it.

Don Diablo - NED

As a prolific and successful producer, insanely popular globetrotting DJ, intrepid label boss and the most Googled man in Holland in 2008; four-deck wizard and all-around dude, Don Diablo, is a gifted musician who's clearly on the path to greatness. Renowned for writing tunes that top charts and get snaffled up by TV shows like 'CSI: NY' (and ad campaigns for films like 'Snakes On A Plane'), and lauded for remixing enormous artists like Public Enemy, Kraak & Smaak and Laidback Luke; this flying Dutchman is currently producing part of UK rapper Example's new album in between rocking gigs all over the planet and concentrating on his next album for Sony/BMG worldwide. Fresh, bold and spontaneous, Don Diablo's DJ sets are famed for comprising a barrage of exclusive edits and bootlegs, and further championed for their frenetic energy, technical mastery and spur of the moment insanity.

Klaas - GER

Cologne-based DJ/Producer Klaas is a bonafide powerhouse of the global Electro House scene. In just a few short years his distinctively energetic style has seen him remix the likes of Eddie Thoneick, Aston Martinez, Michael Mind and Global Deejays - while his original productions (including the hugely successful floor-filled 'The Way') have earned him legions of new fans and stormed dance charts around the world. Nominated by Beatport as one of the Top 10 Best Electro House Artists in the world in 2008, Klaas has recently rocked DJ tours in North America, Australia and beyond, and is well on his way to being one of EDM's brightest shining lights.

Ugly Duckling - USA

Blurring the boundaries of Hip Hop and Funk to create a sound that's all their own, this trio of fiercely independent musical ideologists have taken the planet by storm. Comprising the prodigious talents of Andy, Dizzy and Young Einstein, Ugly Duckling have been delivering knock-out blows with their humorous style and piping hot live show since 1997. Leaving a trail of revered releases in their wake (including the infamous 'Fresh Mode' and 'The Leftovers' EPs, and the truly audacious 'Taste The Secret', 'Bang For The Buck' and 'Audacity' LPs), this triply talented team's motto of 'no management companies, no major labels, no media powers and no marketing budgets' has proven to be an intoxicating and refreshing recipe for global music industry success. Big, bold and full of soul, Ugly Duckling's beats and rhymes are truly the sound of now.

Dilated Peoples - USA

Dilated Peoples energized the rap underground in similar fashion to fellow West Coast crew Jurassic 5. The duo of Evidence and Rakaa came together in the mid-'90s, when they met at many of the same hip-hop shows; after deciding to start making tracks together, they formed Dilated Peoples. Once they added to the fold an excellent turntablist, DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples recorded the singles "Third Degree" and "Work the Angles" for ABB Records. The latter became an underground hit via hip-hop radio and club play, prompting Dilated Peoples' signing to Capitol. The Platform followed in May 2000. The group's follow-up for Capitol, The Expansion Team, was released with rave reviews as well as a Top 40 placing, and the group hit the road touring with the film Scratch, a documentary about hip-hop DJs and turntablists. Now are set for their first ever tour down under.

ARTIST BIOS:

N*E*R*D (USA)
With their digital musical palette and vivid imaginations, Pharrell Williams, Shae Hayley and Chad Hugo have taken their hip-hop foundation and untethered the bounds of pop, bestowing unsuspecting hit records in almost machine-gun-like succession - whether in rap (Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, et al), R&B (Usher, Babyface), pop (Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake) or rock (No Doubt). But N.E.R.D is not the Neptunes. N.E.R.D is a fly-or-die, thrash-around, do-as-you-will, set-your-soul-on-fire alter-ego that subscribes to no rules, and adheres to no agenda. GUITAR LEGEND SANTANA
RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

In Concert with his Guitar Heaven Tour

Tuesday 30th November, 2010
Chugg Entertainment today announces that come March, one of the greatest musicians and legendary guitarists of our generation is set to ignite Australian & New Zealand shores. Toting a style that defies definition, immediately recognizable yet unlike any other, Santana's fusion of Latin rock, blues, soul and jazz comes in full swing on stage in a way that transcends time and the limits of genre typecasting.

The GUITAR HEAVEN TOUR begins on Sunday 13th March at Sandalford Estate Swan Valley in Perth, followed by Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday 16th March, and then the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Thursday 17th March before heading to New Zealand for shows at Vector Arena in Auckland on Sunday 20th March and Christchurch's CBS Canterbury Arena on Tuesday 22nd March.

The tour then heads back to Australia for a performance at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Thursday 24th March, then Sydney's Acer Arena on Friday 25th March.

The tour then concludes with a very special performance at Hope Estate in the Hunter Valley on Saturday 26th March, where Santana will be joined by very special guests The Doobie Brothers.

For forty years and as many albums later, Santana has sold more than 90 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide. To date, Santana has won ten Grammy® Awards, including a record-tying nine for a single project, 1999's Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for "Smooth"). In 1998, the group was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, whose web page on their induction notes, "Guitarist Carlos Santana is one of rock's true virtuosos and guiding lights." Among many other honours, Carlos Santana has also been cited by Rolling Stone as #15 on their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." His newest CD, GUITAR HEAVEN…THE GREATEST GUITAR CLASSICS OF ALL TIMES (ARISTA) (featuring "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"), was released in late September 2010. Celebrating this chart debut, Santana joins the ranks of the Rolling Stones as the only musical act in chart history to score at least one Top 10 album in every decade beginning with the 1960s. GUITAR HEAVEN…is Santana's 29th Billboard Top 200 charting release, 12th Top 10 album debut and third Top 10 debut in the past 5 years.
Since its #5 debut on the Australian charts GUITAR HEAVEN has achieved gold status. It was produced by Howard Benson, Matt Serletic, Clive Davis and Carlos Santana who devised a list of guitar-centric titles – and then invited a who's who of guest vocalists to perform on every track. Singers range from Chris Cornell (on Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"), India.Arie and Yo Yo Ma (on the album's first single "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"), Pat Monahan (on Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away"), Chester Bennington and Ray Manzarek (on The Doors' "Riders on the Storm"), Rob Thomas (on Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love), Scott Weiland (on the Rolling Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'"), Chris Daughtry (on the album's current single Def Leppard's "Photograph"), Gavin Rossdale (on T. Rex's "Bang A Gong"), rapper Nas (on AC/DC's "Back In Black"), veteran Joe Cocker (on Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing"), and more.

There are few artists of this caliber, and fewer opportunities to see them live. Do not miss the chance to see one of the most enduring guitar legends in March 2011.

People's Messiah

November 19th 2010 05:00
People's MessiahSaturday 4 December 2010
5pm (for 5.30pm start), runs for 90 minutes.

Coriole Vineyards Chaffeys Road, McLaren Vale

Make a difference this Christmas season as you sing along to choruses from Handel's Messiah at Coriole Vineyard's People's Messiah.

Held in Coriole's acoustically superb barrel room, the People's Messiah is an opportunity to sing along to the choruses of Handel's Messiah, or just enjoy the soaring sounds of The Corinthian Singers with guest soloists from the Adelaide Chamber Singers and State Opera of SA.

George Handel's Messiah first premiered in 1742 as part of a charity event. In this tradition, proceeds from Coriole's People's Messiah will go to Catherine House who provide supported accommodation and emergency housing for women in South Australia.

Handel conducted Messiah many times and often altered the music to suit the needs of the singers and orchestra he had available to him for each performance. In this way the Coriole event is the people's Messiah where the audience is led by musical director Christie Anderson and accompanist Karl Geiger to sing along to the choruses.

The songs from Handel's Messiah relate to Jesus' life, death and resurrection and have now become a celebratory tradition in the lead up to Christmas.

Whether you join the audience choir or just sit back and enjoy the performance, the quality of the sound in the barrel room commands complete attention. Handel’s glorious music is the perfect way to herald in Christmas, said Coriole Vineyards Director, Mark Lloyd.

Bring your own picnic to enjoy in the courtyard after the performance. Coriole wines which will be available for purchase by the glass or bottle.

Cyndi Lauper Live
Touring Australia in March to April 2011

GET READY for the EXPLOSIVE CYNDI LAUPER

Iconic performer Cyndi Lauper is returning to Australia for a number of performances from March 2011. Tickets go on sale around the country on November 25.

Cyndi Lauper

Cyndi Lauper was the first artist to have five top ten singles from a debut album which included her mega hit Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Cyndi has sold 25 million albums, received 13 Grammy nominations, two Emmy Awards, two American Music Awards, and 18 MTV Video Music Awards and continues to lead as a singer, songwriter, musician, actress, and activist.

The Cyndi Lauper tour of Australia commences in Brisbane with two performances on March 28 and 29 and then travels to Sydney on March 31st and April 1, Newcastle on April 2, Perth on April 5, Melbourne on April 8 and 9 and completes her tour in Adelaide on April 11.
With her recent album Memphis Blues, a collection of blues cover songs, she is once again reinventing herself by putting her unique twist on one of music’s most beloved genres. The collection of blues cover songs ranges from the harmonica blues ballad Just Your Fool to Don’t Cry No More, originally a hit for Bobby “Blue” Bland. Memphis Blues has been at the top pf the Blues charts for several weeks.

"Australia is one of my favorite places and I am looking forward to visiting again in early 2011,” said Cyndi Lauper. “We always have a great time when we come to Australia."

Her 2008 studio album, dance-oriented, Grammy-nominated Bring Ya to the Brink, featured collaborations with a cadre of cutting-edge producers and spawned two No. 1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Play singles. In 2009, the long-time actress appeared on such red-hot television shows as 30 Rock, Gossip Girl, Bones, and American Idol (performing with contestant Allison Iraheta), and was a surprise guest at the resurrected concert event VH1 Divas. In addition to her love of performing, Cyndi is unwavering in her commitment to social activism, creating the True Colors Fund as a show of solidarity against discrimination and to raise awareness about the issues facing the GLBT population.
