Today pre-orders of Powderfinger’s last ever performance are available exclusively on the Australian iTunes store.

The live recording of their final show on 13 November at the Riverstage in Brisbane, will be available on iTunes approximately twelve hours after the curtain drops on the bands remarkable career.

Over 290,000 tickets have already been sold across 35 shows in 21 different cities on the colossal tour, resulting in a whopping 24 sold out dates so far! With only a handful of shows around the country still having tickets available, it seems that many unlucky fans missed out on their opportunity to farewell this iconic Aussie band. But while the sun is indeed setting, there are still a few rays of sunshine on the horizon. Powderfinger has recently released additional tickets to their sold out shows at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne (10 & 11 September) and Supreme Court Gardens, Perth (22 & 23 September). Meredith Music Festival 2010

August 28th 2010 00:58
The 20th Meredith Music Festival
December 10, 11 and 12, 2010.

At the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre
on the Nolan Farm, Meredith, Victoria, Australia.

Everything You Need To Know is at www.mmf.com.au and the line up is below, with links and clips.

The 20th Meredith: Grand, Pirate and Fun.

DIRTY THREE
WATCH
WATCH

The band that let their evocative sonic emotions whirl around amongst the ghost gums in 1994, transported us to a whole new sphere in 1997 and let it all out inside The Hundred Year Storm at The Supernatural Amphitheatre in 2004. Helping celebrate the 20th Meredith festival, loved and respected all over the world, Melbourne band, The Dirty Three.

WASHED OUT
LISTEN
LEARN

Early last year, Ernest Greene moved home to his parents' orchard in rural Georgia, USA, began making bedroom records and releasing them for friends on cassette. Before long music fans worldwide were salivating at tracks like 'Feel It All Around' and the so-called Chill-wave sound that Ernest had pioneered. Washed Out is all about songs concerning youth and summertimes.

" .. sounds blurred and woozily evocative, like someone smeared Vaseline all over an early OMD demo tape, then stayed up all night trying to recreate what they heard." It's as languid as they come and you can feel it all around yourself on Friday Nite.

LITTLE RED
WATCH

They first fed us their slice of joy at Meredith in 2008 and they'll serve up more again in 2010. LITTLE RED the effervescently irrepressible party outfit of the highest order says a few tracks off their new record were written specifically for Meredith. These top-flight musicians express themselves through a terrific realm of music and deliver with panache, unifying a sense of simply irresistible fun. Little Red will steep you in classic R&B, garage, doo-wop and rock'n'roll possessed of a thoroughly modern spark.

GIRLS
LISTEN
LEARN

For the first time on these fatal shores we present Girls. Based around the songs of Christopher Owens, who was raised in the Children Of God cult. While there, Christopher was not allowed to listen to music from outside the cult, but was allowed to watch movies from which he absorbed music like Queen and Guns 'N' Roses. Girls' album is an "overflow of expression", as Owens could do whatever he liked on the album without worry for boundaries. It's been called a masterpiece, and the masters/mistresses themselves will play Saturday 11 December 2010 blossoming.

NEIL FINN
LEARN

The realisation of a long-held dream will Happen on Saturday Evening. One of the most recognised songwriters in the recent history of modern music and frankly one of the most talented humans walking this Earth will take to the stage for a rare and very special Solo Performance to help mark The 20th.Yes, the extraordinarily gifted Neil Finn will be there in The Supernatural Amphitheatre - armed with little more than a guitar and a legendary songbook. From his time in the incredible Split Enz, through several acclaimed solo albums, the two 7 Worlds Collide projects, and of course Crowded House, Neil Finn has written some of the world's favourite songs.

Graciously accepting our invitation to perform solo with maybe just a guest or two on the night, this will no doubt be sublimely wonderful as the sun sets on the Nolan Farm in December.

THE CLIPSE
LEARN
WATCH
LISTEN

Brothers Pusha T and Malice were born in the Bronx and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Their following is cult but deep and strong. They are known as hip hop's meanest, smartest duo; as rap's reining poet laureates (many of their legions of fans consider them the greatest duo ever to touch microphones, no less). Three of their four albums are produced entirely by beat making heroes The Neptunes, and are considered by many to be that genius-production-duo's finest works. Hell Hath No Fury is one of only five albums in the history of music to score XXL/5 stars from hip hop bible XXL. The gritty, street realism of their lyrics is something to behold in amongst banging hip hop and some pop hooks. All the way from the mean streets of Virgina Beach to the Australian bush. This is a coup de Art. Do not miss. Late Friday Nite.

CUSTARD
WATCH
LISTEN

This will be Custard's first show in Victoria in over ten years. They last played Meredith back-to-back in 1997 and 1998; that was post- Apartment, Pack Yr Suitcases and I'm Alone, and right about Anatomically Correct and Music is Crap, but pre- Girls Like That Don't Go For Guys Like Us, I Feel Like Ringo etc.
Rather than try to explain the brilliance, the quality song writing, the obtuse catchiness, the hilarity and the general bonhomie that is Custard, I urge you to set aside ten minutes to watch this link HERE.

SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS
LISTEN
LEARN

Prepare yourself for an epic dance-a-thon. If the world had a backing band, this would be it. If the world's backing band required the ultimate front person, they got it. All the way from Brooklyn New York City, via 1964, it's the thick funk and soaring soul of SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS. Party machines don't get built any better than this. The new album "I Learned the Hard Way" drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon's raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. "Once you get moved by the Spirit, you just gotta let it out and share it with the people," Sharon says. And share it she does.

REVEREND HORTON HEAT
LISTEN
LEARN

Recently, the King of Psychobilly had something along the lines of what he calls an epiphany. He's noticed that some of his funnier, country-tinged songs were his biggest crowd pleasers. Welcome to Laughin' and Cryin' with the Reverend Horton. A trip back to a time when outlaws wrote songs about being without a pot to piss in, psycho ex-boyfriends, expanding beer guts and deadbeat girlfriends that spend your pay check faster than you can say Lone Star. Friday Night

PANTHA DU PRINCE
LISTEN
LEARN

Pantha Du Prince has taken minimal techno a step further. He claims: music slumbers in all matter; any sound, even silence, is already music. The mission, then, must be to render audible what is unheard and unheard of: black noise, a frequency that is inaudible to man. Black noise often presages natural disasters, earthquakes or floods; only some animals perceive this "calm before the storm." His new album thru Rough Trade is based on field recordings and improvisations in the Swiss Alps; it balances precariously on the slippery threshold between art and nature, between techno and folklore. That lends it a certain spectral and intangible aspect. Nature and technology become indistinguishable, all authenticity evaporates. Not unlike DanielF. Galouye's novel Simulacron-3, adapted for television by Rainer Werner Fassbinder under the title Welt am Draht, it leaves the question of what is artificial, what is real, unanswered. Nature as a simulacrum. Although the music goes beyond the conventional techno format in a variety of ways, the dramaturgy always remains intelligible and physically captivating.

C.W. STONEKING
LISTEN
LEARN

Curious as Alice through the looking glass, C.W. Stoneking draws influence from pre-war blues, jazz,1920's calypso, folklore and personal experience to produce his unique original songs, accompanying himself with National Reso-Phonic guitar and tenor banjo, and brass band the "Primitive Horn Orchestra". His songs range from lonesome field holler blues, to hokum blues duets, to full blown jungle epics. He began playing the guitar at the age of 11, and performed in bands from age 13. From age18 (1907) C.W. performed mostly pre-war acoustic blues styles working mainly as a guitar player. In 1917 C.W. moved from Sydney to rural Victoria (Naroghid) and then in 1997 to Melbourne and began performing as a solo blues guitarist/singer in the 1920's style. In 1918 he formed a band, The Blue Tits which consisted of double bass, clarinet and mandolin with C.W. on guitar and vocals. Cut a long story short - here we were.

EL GUINCHO
LISTEN

Tropicalia of Capricorn Rising, right on the frilly-flowered Cusp. El Guincho is the recording alias of Spanish musician Pablo Daz-Reixa, from the Canary Islands. He rose to prominence with the intoxicating psychedelic rush of his album Alegranza! ("Joy"). His musical style, influenced by a broad range of artists like Animal Collective and the astonishing Os Mutantes, makes fantastical use of sampling and incorporates elements of Afrobeat, dub, Tropicalia and rock and roll as The Guinch achieves what he himself has described as "space-age exotica". Ole, sputnik.

THE HEATWAVE
LISTEN
LISTEN
London's premier purveyors of dancehall. "We love this music. We want to tell everyone about it". The Heatwave equals huge tunes and quickfire mixing brucking out and people banging on the ceiling for reloads. A radio show on London's number one pirate station. Dancehall remixes you'll Know. The biggest UK bashment sound in the world. The sound that ties together Jamaica and the UK. Whether you call it dancehall, bashment or ragga, when The Heatwave touch down it's a madness: pure hype and energy. A carnival. They show how dancehall is the root of jungle, garage, grime, dub step and funky. The Supernatural Dancehall.

DJ HARVEY & DJ GARTH

From Cambridge, Harvey has a cult following the world over and is influential in bringing the disco/garage/house sound from America to the UK. A graffiti bomber and member of the gang which went on to take the name, TDK (Tone Deaf Crew), Harvey's crew gained notoriety as TONKA Hi Fi. He forged his reputation as an eclectic programmer of music, throwing outlandish, sometimes weekend-long, parties. Should be right at home then.

DJ GARTH
LEARN

Garth has been an icon in San Francisco nightlife for...20 years, playing a key role in sustaining the flames of conscious hell raising that existed there in generations past. He sorta did the reverse of Harvey, bringing UK Sound System culture to the Left Coast and Heartland USA, touring it in a '47 Greyhound bus whose previous owners were a gospel choir. Ever the DJ's DJ, he stays true to the original art form playing all-vinyl sets the planet round, turning out parties upon request. Party on Garth?

SALLY SELTMANN
LISTEN
LEARN

"Heart That's Pounding" re-introduces Sally Seltmann, previously best known as New Buffalo. Sally is the award-winning Australian songwriter behind albums "The Last Beautiful Day" and "Somewhere, Anywhere'. "I felt like it was time for me to stop hiding behind a stage name. I had success as a songwriter with Feist's '1234' and that made me believe in myself as a songwriter." New album resounds with confidence, megawatt melodies and an energising joy. She was listening to songs like 'Eternal Flame' and 'Manic Monday', "I wanted to create songs with a classic radio sing-a-long feel." She also draws inspiration from the David Lynch classic Twin Peaks and Nina Simone. Hers are modern folk songs and they'll resonate primetime Sunday.

THE DEAD SALESMEN DUO
LOOK

It's very fitting, you see...this duo played The Very First Meredith way back in1991. Can't remember how that came about but someone knew them, and they said they'd do it, even though 'Meredith Music Festival' meant absolutely zero to anyone then. Aunty was 'young' then and remembers it like yesterday - the forthright young musicians struck a chord. They played Saturday, Ryda on acoustic and Hap standing up drumming and singing, then memorably struck up an impromptu sing along on Sunday with members of the crowd that spilled on and off stage all day, as glorious ad hoc fun. Actually, that's what 'Sunday at Meredith' is still based on, that feeling of having Been Thru Something the night before, then luxuriating in the glorious aftermath of an epic. Wonderfully, there's video of them at the first Meredith. But way beyond sentimental reasons, they're here because they're brilliant. Plaintive, emotive songs played with verve and sincerity and sung with a world-stopping natural honesty. 'Wendouree' is a half-lost Australian gem. The Dead Salesman Duo hasn't played for more than a decade, and we really appreciate them playing at The20th. See you at the 40th then the 60th fellas?

THOSE DARLINS
LISTEN
LEARN

Those Darlins are not of Nashville. They write their own songs, record in NYC with Vampire Weekend's producer, and talk convincingly about female empowerment, music history and egalitarian ideals of performance and business. In practice, they are rockers. In the backyard of their suburban house, littered with musical instruments and cast-off whiskey bottles, they stick wires in the spindle holes of old LPs, hang them from the magnolia tree, and shoot them with BB guns. They're good shots. "Patsy Cline for the punk era," New York Times. "In a world of emo-boys and reluctant band leaders, Those Darlins, country-punk pals from Murfreesboro, Tenn., had a comically leering sexuality and the kind of abandon that seems scarce these days." Whether or not they're the embodiment of Patsy Cline, or the latest in a series of rockabilly acolytes intent on reinventing rock'n'roll, they're absolutely not reluctant on any level. Sundae.

THE FIELD
LISTEN

What do you add to a Friday Nite that already has the dynamism of Washed Out, Reverend Horton Heat, The Clipse and Little Red? A. Mind-bending avante-gard electronica from Stockholm, I would imagine. Anyone with a track called 'I Have The Moon, You Have The Internet' gets a foot in my door. Thumbnail: The Field's ability to sample the familiar into something new combined with a deep adoration for the shoe gazer rock of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine served to inspire a new fusion of ambient and techno. The Field becoming a cult favourite amongst bloggers, then "From Here We Go Sublime" in 2007 shattered all expectations. According to Meta critic it was the "best reviewed album of 2007". Together with John Stanier of Battles on percussion and band mate Dan Enquist on bass, the new record manages to show a lighter side, with some parts having a near modern classical feel that seems to herald a new era for fans of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Half full.

BROADCAST

LEARN
LEARN MORE

The fabulous Broadcast finally delight Australian fans by coming to this country for the very first time in their fifteen-year life. They're from Birmingham UK, they've(brilliantly) made three albums plus a recent collaboration with designer The Focus Group which was named Best Record of the Year by experimental music bible The Wire. They reference 60's proto-electronica, warm analog tones, poppy melodies, beautiful harmonies; their aesthetic is a combination of their love for film, library music and electronics with psych-pop colour. Broadcast have always had fans among other musicians, including Flying Lotus, Tim Gane from Stereolab, Grizzly Bear, Atlas Sound and Dangermouse, and no doubt a big bunch of local musicians too.

JEFF THE BROTHERHOOD
LISTEN
LEARN

I've come to love JEFF The Brotherhood. At first there was something just a bit odd in the delivery of their good time rock'n'roll that weirded me out a bit. But now I dig them big time. They are odd but damn they is cool creative cats and they sure do make good fun rock'n'roll music. JEFF The Brotherhood is Jake and Jamin Orrall, two brothers that play three guitar strings and a minimal drum kit and thereby manage to distil rock to its primal essence. They grew up in Tennessee making music and trying to have a good time. Since then they've played anywhere from house parties to rooftops, backyards, bars and art galleries and released their own records, tapes, comic books and home made videos. They've been labelled "krautpunk", "psychedelic grunge" and "noise pop" drawing comparisons to bands like Hawkwind, Wipers and early Sonic Youth. Their "we'll play anywhere" attitude and frenetic live shows have earned them legendary status. Anywhere =12.7 kms WNW of township of Meredith. I love you, man.

HOSS
LEARN
LISTEN

Hoss is one of the best rock bands this country has produced. Powerful, tough, natural-sounding rock 'n' roll with a brain as well as a rump. They don't make videos, they don't play very often (took them 15 years to go to Perth), they don't compromise, and as far as I can tell they don't care; they ain't careerist. Being a rock band and making rock music is as far as it needs to go, that's the endgame, and that box is well and truly ticked. Fronted by Joel Silbersher (who had a RRR show and wrote God's My Pal before he was old enough to vote), Hoss started in the late 80s, and played Meredith in 1992, '93 and '96; Joel also played as Melonman in '94, as Joel Silbersher and Charlie Owen in '95, and as Tendrilsin'98 and '99. When Meredith moved to a new site in 2002, Hoss was the band invited to open it. Now, they will close The 20th.

RAT VS POSSUM
LISTEN
It was good right from the Start, absolutely inspired neo-tribal bliss and shambolic, shouty freak outs" and got Attention "You almost want to keep them as a private secret, yet also feel a civic duty to graffiti their name across town because Melbourne needs to know how good this band is" and then it Evolved "...joyously experimental, infectious and unique" and Now it's something really remarkable "...songs of tribal sounds, psychedelics, great rhythms and heaps of yelling, animal style" and it's Happening "this is one tribe I am more than happy to be cannibalised by." Friday. "Dan Kelly wished he was 21 and living on acid and baked beans again at the Rat vs Possum gig." - Dan Kelly's facebook status.

CLOUD CONTROL
LISTEN

Cloud Control make really good pop - clever and informed, sure, but more importantly: entirely danceable. It's of a quality and style that would have seen them rise to the top of the pops in any era of the past half-century. Their track 'Gold Canary' was recently chosen by UK voters as Single Of The Week on BBC6's Rebel Playlist, and influential British music website Drowned In Sound awarded it 'Single of the week'. Superb. I'm not going to make any obvious jokes about Meredith weather and 'Cloud Control'. Am I?

COMBO LA REVELACION
LEARN

Combo were first booked to play Meredith in 1995. It was a wet, grey day, there had been a stack of rock bands playing, and these sharp-dressed Peruvians had to be repeatedly assured that their seemingly incongruous presence among a crusty flanneletted bunch on a Victorian farm would be received positively. Our advice to them was to not speak one word of English on stage. They got up, got going, the sun came out, a giant conga line instantly formed and a 15-year annual residency was borne.

They've only missed one Meredith since, in 2005, a move about as popular as Coke changing its formula. We salute you, Jorge, Moses and friends, thanks for all the joy you've given Meredithians over the years (at last count Combo had been booked to play 478 weddings on account of Meredith). Summer Lovers Annual Fling.

CITY OF BALLARAT MUNICIPAL BRASS BAND
WATCH
The City of Ballarat Municipal Brass Band follows the traditional English brass band format, which is distinct from other types of band combinations such as military, concert, or symphonic. To maintain the unique distinctive sound that only a brass band can produce, woodwind, reed and stringed instruments are not used. Difficult marches such as The Scindian, The Arabian, The Cossack etc. were some of the marches the band played. During the first half of the 1950s, the band was considered to be the level of any marching band in Australia. Huge crowds would assemble at their prestigious performances. 2010 might see history repeated. They play Saturday morning at the stage after a heralding march around the Amphitheatre. Stirring.

THE FALL LEARN
WATCH

Not kidding. The Fall! Music's ultimate mavericks will be in Australia for the first time in... 20 Years. If you know The Fall, nothing more needs to be said. If you aren't familiar with any part of their tumultuous 34-year career, you might click the above links to gain the tiniest insight into The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall. "They are always different, they are always the same" - John Peel's favourite band. "One of the bands to see before you die" - Q Magazine. The Fall have had well over 30 different line-ups so far, but at the centre always is the NME God-like Genius Award for Services to Music winner Mark E. Smith. The latest album, "Your Future Our Clutter" is triumphantly magnificent. They are still mighty, spiky, urgent and fpunky live. In fact Mark E. Smith says this is "the best line up of The Fall". They've had a profound influence on a million bands yet nobody sounds like them. They are the ultimate pirate outfit, doing whatever they want, defying all logic and convention. "Post-punk" doesn't scratch the surface. Is there anything more punk than The Fall? Below details are not for publication.

Tickets on sale September 7 at select stores, then September 9 online at www.mmf.com.au.

A year off for Homebake Festival

August 25th 2010 05:46
Homebake Music, Film & Arts Festival HQ have made the following announcement:

Whilst this past weekend witnessed a state of political confusion, we concur that we've certainly had our fair share as well. That said and with such a plethora of festival announcements of late, we've decided to go against the grain and as such - after much deliberation (& some procrastination) - we here at Homebake festival HQ have decided to take a break and postpone Homebake Music, Film & Arts Festival for this year only, 2010.

As we've not been able to have the 'planets align' to a standard we feel appropriate to the long standing reputation of Australia's largest 'locals only' event, we'd rather focus on a positive future and are instead planning for a unique return version of Homebake Festival to take place during the first week of December 2011.

http://www.homebake.com
The intention is for Homebake to return proverbially 'bigger and better' than ever, incorporating even more facets of the antipodean arts industries & with special incentives in place for the few generations of thousands of loyal Homebake devotees whom have attended over the past 15 years.

We ask you to stay tuned for now as we commence preparations for what will be the 16th Edition – Homebake Music, Film & Arts Festival, 2011.

Huge thanks for your patience & we're looking forward to have you all join us to celebrate in 2011.

Tangier

Billy Thorpe

When we lost music icon Billy Thorpe he was working on his most ambitious project to date, an album called Tangier.

Comment on the album to be released 22 October 2010

Billy Thorpe's final masterpiece
- Noah Taylor

Comment on the album to be released 22 October 2010

Music industry insiders who previewed the (music video) clip last week were astonished by its cinematic feel, with many comparing it to films including The English Patient and Babel, which have been shot in the exotic North African desert country.
- Crushable.com

Many of Thorpe's mates and local musicians have rallied to help complete Tangier, which will released on October 22.

Actor Noah Taylor said, "About five weeks ago, I got a call out of the blue from Jack (Thompson) and he asked if I would be up for appearing in a music video to be shot in Morocco the following week, for a song called Tangier, from an album called Tangier and it was Billy Thorpe's final masterpiece. I jumped, and 10 days later, I was in Morocco with Josh Logue having the time of my life and experiencing magic on so many levels."

Clip Director Josh Logue, won the ARIA best video in 2009 for his outstanding work with Empire Of The Sun.

Thorpe's close friends Michael Chugg and Amanda Pelman took over producing Tangier since Billy’s passing, and soon they’ll release the full album.

“We have lived with Billy’s gestation of this remarkable work for so many years now, upon his passing it just seemed ‘normal’ to proceed with its completion,” they said in a statement.

And now, here's the first single from the album. Mick Fleetwood added his percussive talents, Sneaky Sound System's Connie Mitchell provided harmonies and producer Daniel Denholm painstakingly pieced together Thorpe's recordings.

Michael Chugg said, "There were moments when it felt like the ghost of Thorpe was directing everyone to finish Tangier. He's been gone for three years and it's like he's still calling the shots."

Billy’s wife Lynn is also excited that fans will soon hear the final chapter of Billy’s legacy.

Shortly before he died, Billy said, “From my experiences in a 40-year international music and recording career, I know instinctively when something really special comes along. I feel it in my joints and it won’t let go. I wake and sleep in its rhythm and cadence. It consumes me and simply demands to be brought to life. And that’s Tangier.”

But N.E.R.D is not the Neptunes. N.E.R.D is a fly-or-die, thrash-around, do-as-you-will, set-your-soul-on-fire alter-ego that subscribes to no rules, and adheres to no agenda. Claude Vonstroke (USA) Melbourne, Adelaide, Gold Coast only

Boasting a cult following of die-hard fans the world over, Detroit’s undisputed king of all things Tech, Minimal and the in sound from way out, Claude Vonstroke is an underground DJ and Producer with few equals in 2010. The head honcho of top-ranking, taste-making label, Dirty Bird, and brains behind late night weapons like ‘The Whistler’, ‘Who’s Afraid Of Detroit?’, and ‘Vocal Chords’, his two artist albums to date (2006’s ‘Beware The Bird’ and 2009’s ‘Bird Brain’) are widely regarded as timeless classics despite their youth. Loved and supported by Richie Hawtin, John Digweed and everyone in between, Claude’s unique musical outlook and prodigious skills are, raising hands, ruffling feathers and squawking in all the right places.

Miami Horror (AUS) All cities

From humble beginnings in Melbourne, Miami Horror has made its mark on the world with a unique blend of Indie Electro, Electropop and Electronica that never fails to get the party started. With frenzied shows at some of Australia’s biggest festivals and support duties for Lilly Allen already notched up, Miami Horror’s future looks so bright it’s scary.

Justice (FRA) Melbourne and Gold Coast only

Justice are the multi-award winning, French electronic music duo of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. Justice are famous for incorporating a strong rock and indie influence into their music and image and are the most successful act on Busy P's inimitable Ed Banger Records. After stellar remixes of Simian, N*E*R*D, Franz Ferdinand, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Britney Spears and Soulwax, Justice released their debut album, † in June 2007 to critical acclaim. The album, which featured mammoth hits D.A.N.C.E, Phantom, DVNO and Waters of Nazareth, shot the duo into super-stardom and was later nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album whilst also coming in at # 15 on Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums of 2007. It was also nominated for the 2007 Shorlist Prize, losing out to The Reminder by Feist. In 2009, Justice added a Grammy to their trophy cabinet when their remix of MGMT's monster anthem Electric Feel won Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. Justice have recently commenced working on their second album, with no release date yet announced. This is their first time back in Australia since 2007.

Erol Alkan (UK) Melbourne, Gold Coast and Perth Only

Hearing is believing. Until you’ve borne witness to one of his legendary live sets, poured headily over one of his meticulously crafted productions, or been catapulted to a sudden sonic nirvana by the dropping of one of his remixes, you might be justified for dismissing his existence as an extremely elaborate myth of the musical underground. After all, how can one man, still in his early thirties, have kept so many kids dancing for so long? Look no further than the well-worn T-Shirt: L.O.V.E. is the answer. What kept Erol on the cutting edge of the independent and electronic scenes for the decade he ran Trash until its final night in January 2007, and at the forefront of bold new territories in the musical cosmos in the years that have followed, is his unwavering devotion to the music he plays. His studious interests across the sonic spectrum made it inevitable that at some point he would cross the boards and start to create music as well as play it, and in 2001 he took his first steps under the nom-de-guerre Kurtis Rush. His alchemical fusion of George Michael and Missy Elliot resulted in 24 carat party gold, and “Bastard Pop” was born, with Erol as one of it’s founding figureheads alongside Soulwax and Richard X, reaching its apex with Kylie performing Erol’s infamous ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ fusion with New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ live at the 2002 Brit Awards. The Manchester legends, also one of Alkan’s favourite ever bands, loved it so much they returned the favour, often performing the ‘mash up’ live. Coupled with the electroclash earthquake that was rippling through London (epicentre: Trash, Monday nights), Erol found himself at the forefront of both movements, and with a gamut of notable new admirers and friends.

Armand Van Helden (USA) Melbourne and Gold Coast only

Armand Van Helden is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most consistent names in dance music. Having a career that has spanned more than 15 years he still continually produces huge hits that enter the pop charts, while many of his peers have disappeared into electronic music obscurity. Based in New York City, Armand is a Grammy Award nominated producer/DJ/remixer who has produced multiple top 40 hits on the UK pop charts including ‘Bonkers’ (UK pop charts #1), 'U Don't Know Me' (UK pop charts #1), 'Koochy' (UK pop charts #4), ‘My My My’ (UK pop charts #12), ‘aNYway’, ‘I Want You Soul’, ‘NYC Beat’, 'Flowerz', 'Hear My Name', 'Why Can't You Free Some Time?', ‘Ultrafunkala’, 'Witch Doctor', and 'Funk Phenomena'. He’s released two critically acclaimed long players, ‘Nympho’ (2004) and ‘Ghettoblaster’ (2007) while also satisfying his New York culture vulture cravings with ‘New York: A Mix Odyssey’ (2004) and ‘A Mix Odyssey Two’ (2008), Armand has also remixed some of the biggest names in the music industry including the Rolling Stones, P. Diddy, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, and Tori Amos. As a DJ, Armand Van Helden is one of the most sought after, performing on the main stage of some of the largest festivals and clubs in the world. But Armand prefers to spend time in the studio and doesn’t enjoy flying long distances which is why seeing him perform in Australia is always a big treat.

A-Trak (CAN) Gold Coast only

Very few DJs can jump from club sets to high-profile festival performances, to Kanye West’s larger-than-life stadium shows with ease. In today’s DJ culture, A-Trak holds a truly unique place. He founded 2007’s most buzzworthy label, Fool’s Gold, with a mission to merge all aspects of club music. The manifesto for this fusion was outlined on his first official mixtape: Dirty South Dance, which set the tone for Trizzy’s very own production, each acapella or track re-edited to create something fresh. In a matter of a few months, his signature remixes (for, amongst others, Boys Noize and Simian Mobile Disco) and his original tracks (Say Whoa produced for Nike and released on Kitsune) and a collaboration with Laidback Luke (Shake it down) were gaining support from the likes of Erol Alkan, Busy P, DJ AM, Annie Mac, MSTRKRFT and Boys Noize. This year A-trak has created two critically acclaimed pace setting DJ mixes for US dance music giants Thrive (Infinity 1) and UK stalwarts Fabric (Fabric Live 45) and is about to embark on recording his debut solo record. Not bad for a kid who many viewed as a 90’s turntablism prodigy. Indeed, Alain’s career began at age 15 when he won the 1997 DMC World Championships and proceeded to take home every other DJ title known to man. He then toured the globe, first alongside Q-Bert’s Invisibl Skratch Piklz and then with Craze and the Allies. In 2004, he was hand-picked by Kanye to be his tour DJ. A near decade of youthful meanderings was captured on his acclaimed DVD Sunglasses Is A Must.
Somewhere along the line, A-Trak also became a streetwear culture icon, collaborating with Nike, New Era, Kidrobot, Zoo York and pretty much every designer worth his salt. The last couple of years have seen him headlining tours with Diplo, The Rub, DJ Mehdi and Kavinsky, and of course his older brother’s band Chromeo. Add to that production for Chicago rap sensation Kid Sister and a strong, audible influence on Kanye’s Graduation album. His forthcoming solo debut is preceded by a 4 track EP collaboration with Armand Van Helden under the moniker Duck Sauce. After years of scratching, accumulating air miles and dressing smart, A-Trak has finally become the man to call to make the kids dance. Ask him and he’ll tell you that this is the moment he’s been waiting for his whole career.

Art vs Science (AUS) Gold Coast and Perth only

There is a reason why night clubs play the music they do: it's the right tempo for dancing, it's got hook lines you can sing along to, and a beat steady enough hypnotise. Art vs. Science not only makes the sort of music played in nightclubs; it is one of the few outfits in Australia which can actually play in night clubs - live. No laptops, no backing tracks, just drums, keyboards, synths and three sets of funky hands. "An expression of their long immersion in the dark, seedy recesses of club-electronica", Art vs Science breathe fresh air into the genre, with an immediate, breath-taking live show, and songs that sound pleasing, joy-inducing; as if meticulously designed, element by element, to intensify user stimulation. Art vs. Science plays, people listen. And they *understand*. Art vs Science embark on a sold out tour of Australia over August and September before heading to Summafieldayze to destroy the dance floor.

The Rapture (USA) Gold Coast only

The Rapture was formed in early 1998 by drummer Vito Roccoforte and guitarist/vocalist Luke Jenner. The whimsical indie group had extensive touring behind them by the time they recorded 1999's Mirror for Gravity. More touring ensued -- with the likes of Sunny Day Real Estate and Nuzzle -- and the band eventually relocated to New York City. They lost their original bassist and found a new one in Matt Safer, who had recently moved from Washington, D.C. After some more touring, the band recorded the six-song Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks EP and had it released by Sub Pop in 2001. Thanks to their sloppy brand of scratchy post-post-punk, the Rapture was hailed as a forerunner of the post-punk revival that was taking place in the early 2000s. Their profile increased significantly with 2002's "House of Jealous Lovers" 12"; that same year, they added multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Andruzzi to the fold. The full-length Echoes followed for Gary Gersh's Strummer label in late 2003. The follow-up, Pieces of the People We Love, was released three years later by Mercury. Tapes, a wide-ranging mix album, came out through !K7 in 2008. The Rapture have been in the studio with Philipe Zdar (of Cassius fame) producing their highly anticipated third album expected to be released before the end of the year.

Yuksek (FRA) Melbourne, Gold Coast and Perth only

Two or three times a week, on his Myspace page, Yuksek gets an e-mail from Istanbul or Ankara saying “Hey, know what? Yuksek means “high” in Turkish!”. No, Pierre-Alexandre Busson didn’t know when he chose the name by instinct four years ago, partly for its sound and partly to buck the trend of English-sounding names that are common in electronic music. In recent months, the pseudonym has been collecting an ever-growing halo of buzz. So what’s the secret of the enthusiastic equilibrium of his finely crafted tracks? Surely not just his virtuoso savoir-faire, even if it does allow him to record his baselines and harmonic progressions in analogue, and instantly seize on the strangest chords he can think of… Well, first of all it’s his naturally spontaneous temperament: “I compose really instinctively,” he says. “I never think about what I’m going to do before going into the studio. I work fast and just let my mood guide me.” That it how, hidden away “far from the sea”, in his own studio situated in the basement of a basement, deprived of Internet and mobile phone contact, Yuksek lets his tracks develop into mini-epics, using his talent for twisted FX, sensorial rollercoaster rides and electrifying changes of tack. “I like it when there’s always something going on in a track,” he confides, before tentatively adding “perhaps because I’m afraid of emptiness?” And that’s how Yuksek became standard-bearer of post Soulwax/Justice disco-rock club culture; by being cultivated and keen, mixing sonic strength and sensibility, sexy images and impromptu noisiness. Or, to put it another way, by blurring the boundary between hyper and surrealism – much like the novels of Kafka (that he loves) or the photos of Gregory Crewdson (which fascinate him and always say something other than they initially seem to). All of which helps us appreciate that “Tonight” abuses the clichés of the night more than it uses them.

Jamaica Gold Coast only

When French born Antoine Hilaire and Flo Lyonnet decided to start a band, they spent many hours trying to think of the name that they would forever be remembered and landed on JAMAICA. A mere three weeks is all it took to write songs that focused not only on sleek melodies, but also on rousing guitar riffs and dry bass grooves, and in the process, JAMAICA created a sound that is a meeting between a grungehead's obsession and a rockers wet dream. Produced by Grammy Award winners Peter J. Franco and Xavier de Rosnay (Justice), the synth-less album features the upbeat and cocky I Think I Like U 2, whose video was produced by Ed Banger designer So-Me. His brilliant idea was to structure the video relaying the band’s history from A to (fabricated) Z. The video follows the musicians from their modest beginnings and the formation of the band through JAMAICA becoming an overwhelming international success to their fall into psychedelic trips and eventually jail.

Zombie Disco Squad (UK) Melbourne, Gold Coast and Perth only

One of the most exciting prospects of 2009 – Jesse Rose. Lucas Hunter & Nat Self are Zombie Disco Squad the multi-talented production duo that are taking house music in a new direction. Taking influences from Balie Funk, African rhythms, Baltimore, Hip-Hop, the so-called fidget sound and making it sound fresh. You won’t find any cheesy gimmicks in their records but what you will find are tracks played by some of the most influential DJs and clubs around the globe. Zombie Disco Squad started life in 2006 after putting on nights around Londons pivotal venues such as the The Social and Catch. They made their name with regular mixtapes, which toured the globe via the internet and had a string of internet hits (10,000 downloads for the track Straight Boy). Influenced by African percussion, foreign languages and jacking music Lucas & Nat were soon traveling around the world touring the states and across Europe. They had touched down in clubs such as Fabric in London, Panorama Bar in Berlin and Hive in Zurich before even having one official single release. Their remixes, on the other hand, have had plays by Radio 1ʼs Annie Mac, Pete Tong and Zane Lowe to name a few. The boys have already picked up support from across the board with Jesse Rose signing them exclusively to his Made to Play label but not before one Mr Claude VonStroke stepped in for a single on DirtyBird. 2009 is looking like their breakthrough year with a residency at Panorama Bar in Berlin, tours with Made to Play, releases on Daniel Haaksmans Man Recordings, DirtyBird, Made to Play and a production sound that is second to none. If you dont know, get to know… you have been warned!

Plump Djs (UK) Melbourne and Gold Coast only

Breakbeat was slumbering away peacefully before the Plump DJs gave it a loud wakeup call with their first release 'Electric Disco/Plumpy Chunks' in 1999. With thundering momentum, their critically acclaimed productions reformatted dancefloors and perceptions, and set new production standards. And an alarming universal consensus was formed. Everyone wanted a piece of the Plump pie, and fat was in. Inspired by a top shelf girlie mag entitled Plumpers, Lee Rous and Andy Gardner met and the Plump DJs were born. It would be nice to say that before making music, the Plump DJs had glamorous jobs - but we can't. Before the duo met Andy worked in a cardboard box factory and Lee was a waiter at a Berni Inn. The music started as a hobby and after a number of excursions and collaborations with the Freskanova camp, the two found their oats at the Finger Lickin' stable. A global need for the bold attitude, squidgy sounds, and Behemoth basslines amplified by the Plumps pushed the duo into their Soho based Laboratoire Plump to manifest a large destiny. Jerk to inflate! Inflate it did, next vinyl.

So Me vs DVNO (FRA) Melbourne and Gold Coast only

So Me is a man of many trades. Hailing from Paris along with the rest of his Ed Banger pals, Bertrand De Langeron is considered as one of the most influential designers of the last ten years. His vibrant colours, genius typography and cheeky hand-drawn sketches have adorned the covers of album sleeves for Ed Banger records, music videos for the likes of DJ Mehdi, Justice and Kanye West and lent to iconic brands such as Nike, H&M and Revolver. Besides being one incredible designer, So Me is also one pretty kick-arse DJ having played all around the world at all the coolest parties alongside the Ed Banger crew and friends like Steve Aoki and A-Trak. Joining So Me on the decks will be DVNO. DVNO is Mehdi Pinson, “the original rowdy crooner”. He is the vocalist featured in the band Scenario Rock which brought us the 2007 dancefloor monster Skitzo Dancer and has lent his elegant songwriting, stylish tradition, ingenious production values to many artist collaborations and productions. DVNO is also the voice and composer of the Justice single of the same name, which was one of the most acclaimed tracks from their best-selling hit album “†”.

Trentemoller (DEN) Gold Coast only

The Danish multi instrumentalist and producer shows an unexpected talent for finding vocalists that fit the mood of his songs. The first single of the album, the beautifully tender ‘Sycamore Feeling’, featuring Marie Fisker, is a typical highlight. In fact, all the vocal tracks are stunning. Trentemøller chose to collaborate with the English artist Fyfe Dangerfield from UK based Guillemots and Danish singers Solveig Sandnes and Josephine Philip from the debuting Danish indie girlduo Darkness Falls. They all manage to add their own sound and flavour to the album, while their voices blend perfectly with Trentemøller’s atmospheric songs. ‘Into The Great Wide Yonder’ is the work of an artist and producer who seems to be completely at ease in the studio. No wonder, as Trentemøller prefers the silence of the night and the solitude of his own apartment in his hometown Copenhagen to create his music. So even though the album sounds like a big production job in an expensive studio, all of the tracks were in fact recorded in his home. When a new label was set up to fit his unique sound, it came as no surprise that Trentemøller chose the name ‘In My Room’. Trentemoller brings his full band experience to Summafieldayze.

The Freestylers (UK) Adelaide only

The Freestylers are Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey. Rocking clubs and parties for over a decade now, The Freestylers are still one of the most exciting names in dance music. They've had Top 20 chart hits, headlined some of the world’s most famous festivals, sold half a million albums, toured the US supporting Lenny Kravitz, and were the first electronic act to play fully live on legendary BBC TV show Top Of The Pops. Their first album “We Rock Hard” was released in 1998 sold over 150,000 albums in the US. Their 3rd album “Raw as F**k” was released in 2004 and contained the massive worldwide hit “Push Up” which reached no.3 in the commercial charts in Australia. After a brief creative break from the dance music scene, The Freestylers return with an almighty bang to present the scorching PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE E.P. A three track package of serious dancefloor bangers to whet the appetite for their forthcoming fifth album, due to hit in the summer and features
’Cracks', 'This City' and
'Bounce To This’.

Aeroplane (BEL) Melbourne and Perth only

Aeroplane is now a one-man operation, Vito having amicably parted company with his bandmate Stephen Fasano. “There are worse things in life!” says Vito. “Stephen's gonna do music on his own, I'm gonna do music on my own. I’m the studio guy, he was more the DJ so when the music became more important, the more I was alone in the studio. The future of Aeroplane was this album and I wrote it and played every instrument.” The two are still on good terms: “I’m probably going to produce the stuff he writes in the future and I’m not going to have a word to say about it!” Flying solo has given Vito the chance to flex his classically trained musical muscles: “We’ve been put in the dance music category but I’m a songwriter, that’s what I know how to do. I wanted to go back to proper pop music, not being forced to do nine-minute tracks so the DJ can mix in before and after.” Aeroplane have never been at the mercy of traditional bpms, and being free of “the dancefloor pressure” has given Vito additional license to slow things down and look around. “I’m at my best at 105bpm,” he says. “That’s the speed where I make the best music. You can do more, there’s more groove, more feeling.”

Internet Censorship Victory!

August 7th 2010 01:57
Late last night the Australian Coalition announced it won't be voting for an internet filter that censors the web. This comes after the Australian Government responded to the Get Up! campaign by deferring the filter until 2012 (with the likelihood that the filter will never come back in its current form).

With independent Senator Nick Xenophon, the Greens and now the Coalition all walking away from the ineffective policy of censoring the internet, there is now no way for the Senate to pass this scheme.

Thank you for being a part of this movement!
the GetUp Team

Check out what we did together HERE and hear about the ongoing global fight HERE.

We've known all along that a system of internet censorship that missed the vast majority of unwanted content, would encourage the outsourcing of parenting and limit our online freedoms.

And we've been joined in these endeavours by our friends at Electronic Frontiers Australia and literally thousands of campaigners in a grassroots movement.

But firewalls, monitoring and governments blocking websites was never just an Australian problem. With our victory comes the realisation that social movements in Iran, China and Burma are still fighting for their political freedoms online. In fact, thirty percent of the world's population live in regimes that block access to parts of the internet.

Responsibility falls on us, on this side of the firewall, to help our friends who are forced to live with censored internet and the axing of their political freedoms. That's why, in partnership with our friends at global campaigning group Avaaz, we've gotten behind a worldwide anti-internet censorship movement -- AccessNow. Access provides ways for you to provide your voice, your bandwidth and your resources to continue the global flight.

Today's announcement is a real example of the power of an organised, mature, online movement. Indeed it was new technology and the power of online campaigning, which was itself at risk from internet filtering, that brought this campaign to the masses.

P.S. It's an historic day for our democracy, as the headlines from Canberra read: "GetUp! High Court win overturns Howard's electoral laws." More to come on this HUGE victory...
