M83

November 14th 2011 21:24
Hot ticket alert. M83’s new lp Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is a sure contender for the Album of The Year. It’s an ambitious, sprawling, epic 22-track double album and it’s outstanding. We were massive fans of French electronic dream-pop artist Anthony Gonzales’ last album, Saturdays = Youth, but this is next level. Get it, put it on, turn it up and then grab tickets to one of the most anticipated gigs of the year.

“A riot of stadium-epic power drums, synth choruses set to Kate Bush and a runaway sax cut from Cut Copy’s cloth combine to excellent effect” – NME

“High-impact, dizzying synth-pop epic… Born on a vapour trail of dancefloor abandonement, it’s pure, digitized MDMA” – Time Out

9.1/10 (Best New Music) "The best M83 record yet" – Pitchfork

TWIN SHADOW

November 14th 2011 21:19
We can’t wait for TWIN SHADOW (aka George Lewis Jnr)’s side show, guaranteed to be a shoe-shifting affair filled with the propulsive beats and romantic drama that make his recorded output so great. His debut album, Forget, is a sepia-tinged homage to his childhood, recalling moments from his youth in moods alternately sweet and sinister, but always compelling. Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear) produced the album and he does a fine job of making Forget’s 80s-tinged electro-pop sound altogether new. Grab a partner and pretend it’s your school formal: Twin Shadow’s slinky tunes and deep, velvety voice are made for this.

“A magnificently accomplished debut” – BBC

“Twin Shadow has crafted something that’s understatedly, subtly, almost perfect” – NME

“Do believe the hype. Forget is a near-flawless album and certainly one of the most impressive debuts we’ve ever seen” – Pop Matters

WU LYF

November 14th 2011 21:16
WU LYF’s live show justifies the not inconsiderable hype surrounding the publicity-shy, record label-averse Mancunian four-piece. ‘For all the weirdness, they are clearly fabulous musicians who have created their own sound...The songs are dark, beautiful and ridiculously euphoric,’ The Guardian recently said of their performance.

The self-described proponents of ‘heavy pop’ released their startling first record Go Forth To The Mountain to far-flung adoration in the middle of the year and it is indeed a corker: the explosive mix of organs, echoed percussion, chiming guitar and one of the most distinctive vocalists of recent years combining to rapturous effect.

“Grandly speaking, [singer Ellery Roberts] has perhaps one of the most striking vocal dynamics in music right now” – One Thirty BPM

“Go Tell Fire (Reprise) is a skyward soundtrack blast anchored by the band’s perennially garbled soulful vocals” – Stereogum

Presented by Pedestrian and FBi.

TROPFEST ARABIA

November 7th 2011 21:07
IRAQI FILMMAKER WINS TROPFEST ARABIA

Over 12,000 excited film fans crowded onto Abu Dhabi’s glamorous Al Sahil beach on the weekend for the very first TROPFEST Arabia short film festival.

Jassem Al Jabbouri from Bagdad took home first prize with his filmFlock of Stars, judged by Tropfest Australia’s winning filmmaker Damon Gameau, Tropfest Director and Founder John Polson, Egyptian superstar Ahmed Helmy, and Arabian celebrities from across the region.

As part of the winning booty, Al Jabbouri will be flown to Sydney next February 2012 to join Gameau and Polson for the festival’s huge 20th birthday celebrations and to judge the competition.

Joined by his girlfriend, actress Zoe Tuckwell-Smith, Gameau took the trip to the UAE as part of his 2011 prize, in addition to cash.

Al Jabbouri beat eleven other finalists from across the Middle East and North Africa. The film had the audience awe struck with its beautiful animated story that had a strong environmental message.

"I'm so excited to win first place at the first ever TROPFEST Arabia,” said Al Jabbouri. “This is the greatest achievement of my life and a major step for my future career. I’ve also never been to Australia or LA; so I’m really excited to be getting this incredible opportunity to travel and network.”

Runners up Lubna Saeed Al Amoodi, a young female finalist from the UAE took out second place with her film ‘Smile’ and Ahmed Ghazal from Egypt received large cheers from the crowd with a film that looked at about the power of social networking, and how things can easily be misunderstood.

Polson, said: “What a great night, great films, great audience, great venue and great winner – I can’t wait for next year. The crowd was electric and the films dealt with a wide range of issues that each told a great story. At the end of the day, the telling of a great story is what Tropfest is all about.”

Judge and Tropfest Australia winner Gameau says, “Thiswas such a terrific experience and a cultural eye opener. Short films are such a great way to have a voice heard and film makers in that Arabic region certainly have some powerful things to say. It was a real treat and they really embraced the festival and made us feel incredibly welcome. I think it will become a very important cultural event for the Emerites.”

Since winning Movie Extra Tropfest Australia 2011, Gameau’s animation short Animal Beatbox, has been screened at festivals around the world, winning the Special Jury Recognition Prize at the Aspen International Film Festival in April this year. It was also handpicked by documentarian Michael Moore to screen at his Traverse City film festival in Michigan, in July this year.

The twelve Arabian finalists were selected from more than a hundred entrants by Polson and his Arabia c-director, Egyptian comedian and actor Ahmed Helmy, based on their creativity and originality.

As per Tropfest the world over, films must be no longer than seven minutes including titles and credits; contain the Tropfest Signature Item or TSI, and may not have screened previously in public. “Light bulb” – is the TSI for Tropfest Australia’s 20th birthday in 2012, and theNUMBER 2 was announced the TSI for Tropfest Arabia next year.

Stunning debut from Lester

November 1st 2011 21:58
MELBOURNE CHANTEUSE
LESTER THE FIERCE
DELIVERS STUNNING DEBUT

Lester The Fierce is the newest project from Anita Lester, the irresistable chanteuse who is set to release her stunning debut EP 'The Summer Deluge’ this November.

Formerly of Melbourne band ‘Me and the Growunps’, Lester – the visual artist turned performer – describes her music as ‘dark cinematic folk rock’ with the lyrics playing an integral part of Lester The Fierce. A well-known individual in the Melbourne creative scene, Lester has sung at various local and interstate events, including Old Melbourne Gaol (a highly successful Radiohead tribute concert), the iconic Speigeltent and more.

‘The Summer Deluge’ EP comprises of four songs – each bleak but beautiful and full, surrounding the subject in title – the songs portrays the feeling of rain and water in the heat of the Australian Summer. In true form, Lester illustrates her experiences of love and death in a unique and often graphic way. There is a certain discomfort about the subject matter, however, it is adequately balanced by her gritty but classical voice. Recorded by Colin Leadbetter (responsible for records such as Whitely’s ‘Go Forth, Find Mammoth’), ‘The Summer Deluge’ maintains an organic and almost nostalgic feel. The songs are reminiscent of 1960’s folk, but also have the production values to support the cinematic and Kate Bush-esque influences.

UPCOMING SHOW:

MELBOURNE 20th November @ Pure Pop, 4pm (more dates TBA)
Listen to first single “Holland” (released 1st November) here.

Cold Chisel came out blazing at the Townsville Entertainment Centre with the same passion that first catapulted them to the top of the Australian music charts back in the days when a Kingswood was a flash car and colour television a novelty
Courier Mail – 19 October, 2011

The crowd was at fever pitch ... and the rockers did not disappoint

Cairns Post 24 October, 2011

From the opening kick drum of Standing on the Outside through the sing-along classics Cheap Wine and Khe Sanh to the acoustic melancholy of When the War is Over, this is a show that doesn't disappoint. One of the many highlights has been Tim Rogers (from the tour's special guests You Am I) joining Cold Chisel onstage at some gigs for a searing version of the Circus Animals' classic, Houndog.

In an effort to combat ongoing ticket scalping activity, Cold Chisel are releasing limited numbers of new tickets to most shows in the days leading up to each concert. For indoor arena shows, these reserved tickets are all great seats so fans are urged to contact their local ticket outlets for details. There will also be a further release of new tickets available on the day at most shows which will be available from box offices and by phone only.

And to cap off this big week, the band's brand new compilation The Best of Cold Chisel - All For You debuted at # 2 on the ARIA Album charts making it the biggest Australian album in the country right now!

Dates and venues for the Light the Nitro Tour are below. The tour will be presented nationally in Australia by Triple M and Southern Cross Media, MAX and CMC and by Radio Hauraki and Brent Eccles Entertainment Ltd in New Zealand.

Documentary

George Harrison: Living in the Material World

Directed by Martin Scorsese and with a running time of over three hours it really promises to offer an in depth rendition of Harrison's story from his early life in Liverpool, through the phenomenal success of Beatlemania and beyond including that early act of rock generosity long before the days of Band Aid et al, the Concert For Bangladesh.

Like Scorsese’s 2005 portrait of Dylan, No Direction Home, …Material World comes with a wealth of unseen material that includes home movies and letters, and is similarly split into two parts: basically, the 1960s and everything else. It is a massive achievement to make The Beatles’ story fresh, but Scorsese evidently does so, partly by taking George’s undervalued side, but mostly via an assemblage that hurtles us with visceral force from Hamburg (“the naughtiest city in the world,” recalls George) through the craziness of Beatlemania.

George Harrison
Throughout 2008 and 2009, Scorsese alternated working between his film Shutter Island and the documentary.

Then the documentary premièred at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology in Liverpool on 2 October 2011.

It was shown on HBO in two parts on 5 and 6 October 2011 in the US and Canada.

One of the moments highlighted: George evidently hearing a voice in his head saying, “The Yogis of the Himalayas” during his first acid induced head-trip and then shortly afterwards meeting Ravi Shankar, who had a profound influence over him (despite the fact he was not a yogi or from Nepal or Bhutan in the Himalayas): Of Shankar, Harrison said, “He was the first person who impressed me.”

Scorsese’s documentary consists of previously unseen footage and interviews with wife Olivia and daughter Dhani Harrison, Pattie Boyd, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr who provides a blunt assessment of Harrison when he says, “He was a bag of beads and a bag of anger.”

George’s well known travels to India brought about many cherished influences of Indian culture and spirituality to his music and consequently featured greatly in the expansion of The Beatles’ sound at a critical time in their development. In fact his love affair with India never really ended as it continued on with the Maharishi and the Krishna movement, although Harrison credits Shankar with helping him reconnect to his public.

Also interviewed are Yoko Ono, George Martin, Klaus Voormann and funny man Eric Idle, who explains how in his willingness to bankroll Monty Python’s The Life Of Brian by mortgaging his beloved gothic pile in Surrey. “It’s still the most anyone has ever paid for a cinema ticket.”

Mukunda Goswami, Eric Clapton, Astrid Kirchherr, Tom Petty and the notorious Phil Spector are other fascinating people who provide insight into Harrison’s life and career.

Scorsese says he was attracted to the project because "That subject matter has never left me...The more you're in the material world, the more there is a tendency for a search for serenity and a need to not be distracted by physical elements that are around you. His music is very important to me, so I was interested in the journey that he took as an artist. The film is an exploration. We don't know. We're just feeling our way through."

It has been said the contradictions that ran through Harrison are well known: he was the multi-millionaire who preached detachment from materialism, the green gardener who loved sports cars, the spiritual seeker with a coke habit; Scorsese, a Catholic boy fascinated by gangsterdom, clearly recognises a fellow conflicted soul. It sounds like an entertaining and provocatively informative essay on one of the more fascinating musicians of the last century.

Send an email explaining why you’d like to sit through the documentary in twentyfive words or less to Sound Pet and you may just win a copy of the DVD thanks to our friends at Roadshow.
