Kaiser Chiefs' new album

August 26th 2008 00:54
Kaiser Chiefs confirm details of their new album and join the growing roster at Liberator Music.

So, a mere eighteen months since the release of their second album Yours Truly, Angry Mob, which saw Leeds' Kaiser Chiefs have the best selling UK rock album of last year, they are set to unleash their third long-player. The album entitled Off With Their Heads is slated to hit the streets on October 11th and will see them release it on Liberator Music (part of The Mushroom Group) in Australia and New Zealand.

Kicking off with the somewhat incongruous Spanish Metal before launching into Never Miss A Beat the first track lifted from the album, road tested since the band's UK tour last winter is now complete with backing vocals from Lily Allen and New York Pony Club... it sees the band add to their ever bulging bag of hit singles.

Like It Too Much replete with lush orchestral arrangements from Bond & Bjork maestro David Arnold is a rousing classic Kaisers number which sits comfortably alongside the likes of album highlights You Want History and Good Days Bad Days; the latter underpinned by keyboard arrangements conjuring up New York disco morphed into Talking Heads-like brilliance, whilst in its wake creeps up the Kaiserdelic Tomato In The Rain, heralded by its hammond organ and great lyrics.

Half The Truth more than nods to the likes of XTC and comes with a contribution from UK grime artist Sway, meanwhile friend and musical ally Lily contributes backing vocals to Always Happens Like That before the psychedelic bent continues when drummer Nick Hodgson resumes vocal duties on album closer Remember You’re A Girl, sounding like a long lost John Lennon track from the mid-70's.

Off With Their Heads could/should be described as being the first proper Kaiser Chiefs' album with a solid base on which is constructed a series of tracks which come together as an altogether less frenetic and more cohesive piece of work than previous outings and is almost certainly the better for it.

Off With Their Heads produced by Mark Ronson and Eliot James at RAK and Eastcote Studios in London in the Spring of 2008 and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, LCD Soundsystem, Run DMC) at Soundtrack Studios, New York has its home at Liberator Music for Australia and New Zealand and will be readily available on CD, Ltd Edition Vinyl and digital formats on 11th October 2008.

Kaiser Chiefs release the album's first single 'Never Miss A Beat' on October 4th.

On confirmation of the deal Michael Gudinski said "This is THE album of 2008 that you need to listen to…the first single “Never Miss A Beat” is a youth anthem. The pairing of Ronson with the Kaiser Chiefs is inspired.

“There is no doubt that Kaiser Chiefs have already developed a loyal fan base in Australia and New Zealand but their new album “Off With Their Heads” is going to take them to the major league.

“We’re thrilled that the Kaiser Chiefs have signed to Liberator. They are the most important International signing the label has made since its inception and together we’re going to take both the band and the label to new heights in Australia and New Zealand.”

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS IS IN STORES OCTOBER 11 2008 THROUGH LIBERATOR MUSIC

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have got you covered. The Gorillaz masterminds will release the soundtrack to Monkey: Journey to the West - Albarn's circus opera collaboration with visual artist Jamie Hewlett - via XL in September.

If you’ve been looking for an opera album to wedge next to your dad's Andrea Bocelli collection on the family CD shelf, then Gorillaz masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have got you covered.

The album, which is produced by Damon Albarn, was recorded in London and Beijing over the last twelve months and features European and Chinese musicians and singers. It draws upon the music Albarn composed and visuals Jamie Hewlett produced for the Chinese opera production of the same name.

The lyrics are based on ancient Chinese texts and performed in Mandarin. Many Australians will be familiar with the story line as it formed the basis of the legendary TV series Monkey Magic.

With Jamie Hewlett on board (the man responsible for the Gorillaz visuals), the project is sure to be both a visual and aural feast.

Monkey: Journey to the West is out August 23 through XL / Remote Control.

The group were also commissioned by the BBC to create a video animation and accompanying music which will air throughout the station’s coverage of the Beijing Olympics.

If it doesn't read here check it out at You Tube.

Bob Brozman Tour

August 17th 2008 02:36
Bob Brozman

The American world music legend Bob Brozman, one of the most prolific and respected musicians on the planet, returns to Australia to introduce live audiences, to not one, but two of his latest releases; Lumičre and Post Industrial Blues. Brozman, who may just be the music industry’s answer to the United Nations, is a must-see, his show is a true delight.

A remarkable musician whose wit, energy, and musical technique combine to create an unforgettable live performance, Brozman’s exhilarating shows spans the global and musical spectrum, keeping audiences enthralled; eager for more of his endearing, infectious energy. Brozman is indeed a master performer and showman.

Lumičre is the culmination of guitar virtuoso Brozman’s musical memories formed over a lifetime of travelling and playing music with other musicians around the globe. His years of absorbing influences from cultures worldwide is expressed through the establishment of the Bob Brozman Orchestra - a unique concept where Bob intricately plays each instrumental part, building layer upon layer to formulate the tremendous sound of an extensive orchestra.

He revisits the influences drawn from his many previous collaborations with artists such as Debashish Bhattacharya, René Lacaille, Djeli Moussa Diawara and Takashi Hirayasu to reflect on the profound imprint travel has had on his life. The album reflects the vast range of Brozman’s influences, adopting various instruments along the way – the kantele (ten-stringed Finnish harp), the chaturangui (twenty-two-stringed Hindustani slide guitar), the tiny Greek baglama, the ten-stringed Bolivian charango, and of course the National Guitar.

He explores the rhythms of tango, the slide-guitar sounds of Hawaii, the maloya and sega rhythms of Réunion Island, and the African rhythms learnt from his work with Malian master kora player, Djeli Moussa Diawara. In several of his compositions he pays tribute to friends and heroes, including his Hawaiian musical hero, Tau Moe. Lumičre is a musical journey; an exploration which Bob himself describes as ‘living muscle-memories that convey emotions and places; burning curiosities pursued with vigour’.

Post Industrial Blues features a passionate Brozman playing and singing at his improvisational best. Brozman brings a multitude of influences to Post Industrial Blues from India, Africa, the South Pacific, and the Caribbean, but anchors it all with the rootsy sound of blues and Americana.

His choice of additional percussion – including an array of non-traditional instruments such as a knife blade, grass clippers, disassembled marimba pipes and a broken toy piano – give the music an almost otherworldly feel at times, but Brozman brings it all back home in his own inimitable style. The album also reunites him with bassist Stan Poplin and drummer Jim Norris, both mainstays of his earliest albums from the 1980s.

Throughout Post Industrial Blues, Bob Brozman enhances the stunning instrumental performances with many original and contemporary lyrics, including songs about American geo-politics (“Follow the Money” and “Crooked Blues”), Hurricane Katrina (“Look at New Orleans”), modern travel (“Airport Blues”), immigration and war (“Three Families Blues”), and the world’s orphans (“Lonely Children”).

All demonstrate the universality of the blues as interpreted by Brozman. He also delivers his own unique take of The Doors classic, “People Are Strange,” creating a renewed spirit of the song that pays homage to its roots while redefining it through experimental instrumentation and intonation.

DAVID BRIDIE

DAVID BRIDIE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF MAKING MUSIC
AND RELEASES FIRST SOLO ALBUM IN 5 YEARS

"This is the David Bridie you know but with a bigger sound of edgy guitar, whirling keyboards and anthemic vocals alongside his trademark textures, Pacific percussion beats and lyrics of wry social observation." David Sly

"No wonder Bridie is feeling better this year. He's made what might be the best record of his career, 24 years after making his debut with Not Drowning Waving." Noel Mengel

At first inspection, Succumb is a startling departure from David's previous solo recordings. It's more lean and direct, almost abrasive for its confronting guitars and urgent rhythms. But listen closely and familiar signatures abound; lush, textural beds of intricately layered and densely overdubbed sound tapestries.

Not surprisingly, given David's deep social justice concerns, many poignant songs were written in the wake of the 2007 federal election, and some earlier lyrics were adjusted after the election result. "After 12 years under the social conservatives, I see this as a time of possibility, an opportunity to move forward rather than be overwhelmed by despair," says David. "A lot of the questions remain the same, but the beam of light shone upon them is brighter."

While deliberately political, David resists being overtly dogmatic. Rather than chanting slogans or being polemic, he voices concerns that we should all be sharing, though it’s not only political intent that piques the album. Narratives embrace themes that are inherently Australian, in both character and geography, understanding our place in the Pacific, reaching across cultures, seeking ways to stretch across the divide. And always there’s a faint reminiscing of an older Australia, of more simplistic times that shaped the country we grew up in. He says we need to look at where we’ve been to figure out where we’re going, that the old stories and images are important stuff. “It’s too easy to get wrapped up in the here and now,” he warns. “There are so many other good stories to tell.”

The upbeat, positive sound of Succumb is a consequence of the people David worked with and the energy they brought; friends he trusts and respects, none more than guitarist Phil Wales, who has been among David’s closest musical allies over many years. Many other mates dropped in and contributed: Bart Willoughby, Alan and Stephen Pigram, MFTTC cellist Helen Mountfort, Rob Craw. “I loved going to work each day. It was like this long, continuous dinner party."

And there is This Year Is Better Than Last Year – co-written with the Oils' Jim Moginie – which Bridie says reflects his personal frame of mind as well as his response to the change of federal government.

Ultimately, Succumb is the album of a working band, with dynamic contributions from PNG drummer Airi Ingram, Adelaide bass player Paul Cartwright and producer Chris Scallan adding keyboards. David is now looking forward to taking this vibrant song set on the road. “This sound straddles anything else that’s currently happening in music. And to me, that’s important.”

David Bridie will be touring Australia from October 4 including performances at the Australasian World Music Expo in November, which will showcase the region's finest indigenous, folk, roots and world music artists.
