Have remixed for the like of Fort Knox Five, Nappy Riddem, Basement Freaks, Danny Massure, Tal M Klein, Normski, and Ursula1000: Qdup have secured themselves a spot of as one of the most in demand artists for remixing friends of the funk. Their productions have gained massive support and play's from Ali B's Kiss Fm Show (UK) as well as NSB Radio (UK) and Tripple J Radio (AUS). Along with the air play support, Qdup's tracks have been getting caned in clubs and festivals by the likes of A-Skillz, Fort Knox Five, Krafty Kuts and Ursula1000 among others.

SLYNK (Brisbane, Goodgroove records)

Things really started to explode for 24 year old Slynk after releasing his debut EP earlier this year with UK based record label 'Goodgroove'. With full support from some of the world's most respected vinyl slingers including: A Skillz (Fingerlickin'), Fort Knox Five, Freddy Fresh Worldwide, Craig Charles (BBC 6Music), DJ Moneyshot (Solidsteel) and more, it sold like hot funky vinyl cakes and topped the Juno sales charts for weeks. This landed him gigs interstate and a spot at The Fractal Forest stage at Canada's biggest funky breaks festival, 'Shambhala' where he played alongside breaks heavy weights Nick Thayer, Fuzzbox, Boogie Army, Smalltown DJ's and more. Now branching out from Goodgroove, heÂ’s released a remix on Pigballs Records and 2 more tracks on the Manmade Feature Funk series topping the Juno charts again. These releases have been a long time coming and most of Slynk's reputation stems from his inventory of unreleased and unsigned bootlegs that are highly sought after by DJs across the planet.

Lions At Your Door

Lions At Your Door
'In A Sea' National Tour

Stream 'In a Sea': lions-at-your-door/in-a-sea

With a reputation for crafting intelligent, infectious indie pop and energetic, dance-inducing live show, Lions At Your Door (LAYD) is hitting the road this August/September, celebrating the release of new single ‘In a Sea’.

It’s been a while between drinks with the band’s interstate friends, so expect LAYD to hit the stage with all the ferocity of its large cat namesake.

For anyone familiar with LAYD, the band’s first official single for 2010 ‘In a Sea’ may be quite different to what you’d expect from the Sydney indie sextet.

Since taking time out at the start of 2010 to focus on writing and recording, LAYD has grown into a new, more grounded, melodic style of playing, without compromising the frenetic energy they’ve become renowned for.

‘In a Sea’ manages to channel the band’s energy into a tumbling, epic, indie pop tune that stays with you. With each listen the song builds and grows on you, the catchy chorus belying a new found sophistication and clarity of ideas in LAYD’s writing.

Lead singer Marihuzka finds a new dimension to her vocals, performing with delicate restraint over the sparse driving rhythm at the beginning of the song, building until the chorus explodes with the powerful, arresting six piece sound that marked LAYD out from the crowd when they first crashed onto the scene three years ago.

‘In a Sea’ is available August 20 from all good digital providers.

GUERRILLA POETS PLOT CBD TAKE-OVER!

August 2nd 2010 05:17

A guerrilla word army is being formed on Tuesday 3 August, 11:30am at Stanley Street Station, East Sydney (cnr of Crown and Stanley Streets) when ten word artists will be revealed at the movement’s psychogeographic home-base, following a national call for word troopers to compete. The chosen will form a squad set to hit Sydney’s CBD with random acts of poetry from late August.

Part of the seventh annual Australian Poetry Festival (3-4 Sept) with the support of the City of Sydney, the army is led by Sydney creative team Token Imagination , a.k.a Jess Cook, Raymond Nedziak and Omar Hamwi.

Renowned street poets and headliners at the Festival, Tom Keily and Candy Royalle will work up some live word art at The Station for the announcement of the 10 winners – a public event. This is a great chance to catch Keily, part of the Love Lawn Crew and one of Australia’s leading street poets; and Royalle, a hip-hop, electronic artist famed for her passionate lyrics; kick start the Guerrilla Poets into action.

Stanley Street Station will be transformed with the installation of 800 colourful gorillas and large versions of the poetry speech bubble offering a sneak preview of the forthcoming strike. The Station will also launch their cheeky guerrilla menu – reviving elements of the Nuyorican Poet’s Café in NYC (circa 1973) – home to poets, rappers and spoken word artists.

Available during August and September, The Station’s very own Naked Lunch (three courses $40 or individually) honouring the film/ novel based on famous American Beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg's 1958 manuscript, lets you chew the fat literally with a few key guerilla poets to fully enjoy the experience.

Tuck into A homage to Mr Ginsberg ($12) - fresh salad of wild leaves, nuts, fruit, flaxseed dressing & shoots; The Patti Smith ($24), for the godmother of the spoken word punk movement - stir-fried vegetables, roots, leaves, nuts and a little chicken in a spicy sauce with rice; to finish up with sweet treat For you, My H. Rollins…($10) ‘cause we all know he’s a sweetie inside... banana and apple crumble served with ice cream & vanilla custard.

For those in need of the hard stuff, down your existential worries with The Kerouac ($16) - Absinthe, Creme de Cassis, cloudy apple juice, fresh mint - a tribute to literary iconoclast, American novelist, Jack Kerouac. “The poet died of the bottle at 47, but the king of the beat generation sure could write,” says the Station’s manager Bec Foley.

Jess Cook, Guerrilla Poetry’s founder says “the winning poets announced at Stanley Street will have their speech bubbles duplicated to make 100 bubbles per poet, which we’ll be planting all over, fast paced and covert.”

“The Guerrilla’s mission is to perpetrate the urbanscape and provide public access to poetry, with finders free to pick up artworks and take them away as a keepsake or simply transport to a destination of their choice,” she says.

Termed ‘temporary graffiti installations’, the movement follows a public art trend currently sweeping Europe and the States; and brings interactive, transportable and fun art to Sydneysiders, to discover and enjoy at their leisure.

Join the guerrilla movement and front up Tuesday 3 August at 11:30am at Stanley Street Station, East Sydney to find out more.

Continuum Sax
Australia's foremost saxophone quartet, Continuum Sax perform a unique repertoire of composed and improvised works.

Continuum Sax has collaborated with MATCH Percussion, sound artist Gail Priest, didgeridoo player Mick Davison, and jazz experimentalists the Freedivers. In 2008, they participated in the Restrung Festival at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the Six Pack Symphony.

Continuum Sax has commissioned or inspired works from composers including Stuart Greenbaum, Paul Stanhope, Jane Stanley, and Barry Cockcroft.

Continuum Sax has released two CDs, CONTINUUM (2001) and ICON (2005). They have just completed a recording project for reedmusic.com that will result in a wide range of educational resources for Australian saxophone quartet music.

In Review:

R16;This is a group that plays as one - a really beautiful, integrated sonority…’ – From Review of Continuum CD, 24 Hours Magazine (Oct 2002).

'Continuum Sax do improvisation very well, as in Margery Smith's fond treatment of Sandy Evans's DPM. However, the ensemble is equally impressive when playing scored works, thus affording Barry Cockcroft's quartet p a powerful...advocacy and making Perry Goldstein's Motherless Child Variations, with its telling references to Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, so memorable.' - from review, 'Deft at melding sounds, with a score or without', Sydney Morning Herald, 24 October 2006.

MATCH Percussion

Formed in 2001, MATCH Percussion, Daryl and Alison Pratt are two of Australia's leading percussionists. Their repertoire, primarily focussed on the two main percussion keyboard instruments (Daryl-vibraphone and Alison-marimba), includes music composed or arranged by Daryl and works composed especially for them. Highlights include an Australian tour in 2003 and performances at PASIC and across the USA in 2005. In 2005 MATCH released their CD Water Settings on Tall Poppies records.

Growing up in the UK, Haunts has a perspective and direction in his writing that very few other artists in Australia possess and is carving a name for himself as one of the most sought after hip hop artists in the country. His partner Mules is omnipotent in his approach. He has an ear for timing and perfect samples and has already established himself as one of the leading hip hop producers in the country with appearances on numerous nationwide releases that include Boltz ‘The Wishlist’ and a new collaboration album with Sydney duo Hyjak and Torcha titled ‘Unregrettable’.

On stage Choose Mics have an energetic stage presence and recently have left crowds up and down the east coast begging for more while touring with esteemed artists such as Delta, Phrase, Foreign Beggars, Vents one, Tornts, Bliss N Eso and Muph n Plutonic.
