OZPLOITATION RESURRECTION!

August 11th 2008 05:46
Fresh from the premiere of the new Australian documentary NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD as the opening night of the Melbourne Film Festival, Chauvel Cinema is proud to present OZPLOITATION!, an exclusive opportunity to revisit a series of iconic but overlooked gems of Australian cinema on the big screen at Chauvel.

Wild, thrilling, bloody and action-packed, OZPLOITATION films are the 'alternate' masterpieces of the Australian cinema story. These pictures, which broke all the rules, sprung from the introduction of the R classification certificate in 1971, a change that opened the door to progressive, gratuitous & explicit genre cinema.

A counterpoint to the celebrated art cinema of the time that included PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK and MY BEAUTIFUL CAREER, OZPLOITATION films drew on the wellspring of demand from drive-in and grindhouse theatres worldwide, and were almost always the first pictures to make their money back, yet they've never been seriously discussed or recognized in Australian culture, until now.

The Chauvel OZPLOITATION! series will re-introduce Sydney audiences to seven masterpieces of the era: The 'Aussie Alfred Hitchcock' Richard Franklin's gripping thrillers ROADGAMES and PATRICK; the great Australian biker film STONE; Russell Mulcahy's often imitated RAZORBACK; the supernatural thriller about the wrath of Mother Nature LONG WEEKEND; and Brian Trenchard-Smith's explosive 80s classics DEAD-END DRIVE IN and TURKEY SHOOT.
