John Williamson, the church, Johnny Young, Models and The Loved Ones announced as Inductees and RocKwiz Format Announced

It's a wonderful club that is growing bigger each year. Now this year a total of five inductees will join the ranks of those illustrious artists already inducted into the ARIA HALL OF FAME, a list that includes bona fide music legends such as AC/DC, Dame Joan Sutherland, Olivia Newton John, Johnny O’Keefe, Paul Kelly, John Farnham, INXS, Slim Dusty, Jimmy Little and many more.

The ARIA HALL OF FAME continues to be an important fixture on the Australian music industry calendar honouring those artists whose musical achievements have had a significant impact in Australia, and around the world.

ARIA Chairman and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Music Entertainment Australia & NZ Denis Handlin, AM said, “It’s very exciting to be again celebrating the extraordinary history of Australian popular music and the many incredible artists who have made it so special. We are delighted to induct such a distinguished group of Australian artists into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Between them there are many years of unforgettable music history, including the 40th career anniversary of John Williamson and the 30-year anniversary of the church. We are proud to honour them all.”

For the first time since it began in 2005 as a standalone event, the ARIA HALL OF FAME will be staged in Sydney at the Hordern Pavilion on Wednesday, 27 October, 2010. It will also, for the first time, be broadcast on free to air television on SBS’ RocKwiz.

"SBS is thrilled to be the new broadcast partner for the ARIA Hall of Fame, honouring musical brilliance from around the country. It’s a true testament to the popularity of Rockwiz that we have been asked to come on board to present this prestigious event" said Matt Campbell, Director of Television and Online Content, SBS.

For 2010, ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) is proud to announce the impending induction of five distinct and authentic Australian music voices into the HALL OF FAME – John Williamson, Models, Johnny Young, The Loved Ones and the church. All of these artists are ingrained in Australia's history as much as its future and now 2010 is the year to celebrate their contribution.

Call him what you want, Mallee Boy, True Blue or just plain Fair Dinkum, there is no denying that after four decades in the music industry, ex farmer John Williamson is an Australian icon. Over the course of his long career, he has received 3 ARIA Awards and 24 Golden Guitars, as well as MO Awards, APRA Awards, Platinum and Gold albums, and had over 4 million album sales, and the list goes on. In fact, his resume and catalogue would make any songwriter envious; not bad for a kid from Quambatook in Victoria's Mallee country. It was 4 June, 1970, that John Williamson made his debut. On the talent quest TV show, ‘New Faces’, Williamson competed with his self-penned and still much loved "silly song", Old Man Emu. He won, and since then has inspired pride in country, love of land and touched millions. John Williamson is famous for stirring classics such as Cootamundra Wattle, Raining On The Rock, Salisbury Street, Galleries Of Pink Galahs and public outcries like Rip Rip Woodchip and A Flag Of Our Own as well as anthemic songs like True Blue and Glory To Australia to name but a few. In one of the toughest industries, he has not only survived but soared. This year John Williamson will celebrate a milestone regarded as a significant achievement in the entertainment industry, 40 years of success, four decades of hits, of celebrity and of sharing his love of Australia and poetry in song with its people. He and his emu can both celebrate.

On his impending induction, John Williamson said, ‘I am delighted about the news that I will be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010. In my 40th year in the industry, I feel like I’m probably one of the oldest to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. It’s probably because I was a one-hit screamer for thirteen years after Old Man Emu! Forty years of songs hasn’t been without its disappointments - the first ten I had no idea where I was going, but the last thirty have been truly rewarding. And I’m proud that my songs have struck a chord with everyday Aussies. They were written for them. I love this beautiful big country; it inspires me. And there will always be battlers out there forging a living against the odds. I will continue to write about them for as long as I can.”

Singer, songwriter, musician and television icon Johnny Young is set to join the ARIA Hall of Fame family. His illustrious career started in Perth as a teen star at the local stomp dances. Johnny’s recording career began with the national Number 1 hits Step Back and Caralyn. He then moved to Melbourne to take over the role of compere of ‘The Go Show’. His early music television era also included production credits for ‘Happening 70’, ‘The King of Pop’ Awards and the ‘Australian Popular Song Festival’, which were stamped with the magic of ‘Johnny Young’. Then, along came Young Talent Time where for two decades Johnny Young reigned as host and mentor of stars like Tina Arena, Danni Minogue, Jane Scali, Jamie Redfern, Debra Byrne, Denis Walter and many more. Johnny has also excelled as a master songwriter. From John’s pen came songs for stars like Herman’s Hermits, The Seekers, Russell Morris, Normie Rowe, Ronnie Burns, Debra Byrne and many others. These include The Real Thing, Smiley and The Girl That I Love. After Young Talent Time, Johnny Young earned an amazing reputation as one of Australia’s strongest live acts and in ten years, he has performed countless shows Australia wide with his band, as well as shows with Normie Rowe and Marcie Jones in their successful ‘Legends of Oz Rock’ club showcase. Johnny Young continues to combine his successful touring circuit and life as host of the breakfast show on 6IX Perth. With a successful career spanning 40 years of Australian show business Johnny Young remains an integral contributor to Australia’s rock and roll history.

On receiving the news of his imminent induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame, Johnny Young said, “I have always felt like the luckiest kid on the block to be able to continue working in the music industry for 50 years in so many areas when basically I am just a rock and roller. To receive this honor is the cherry on an amazing cake. I am very grateful to all those who supported and encouraged me”.

Formed in Melbourne in 1965, The Loved Ones were Gerry Humphreys, Ian Clyne and Kim Lynch. They had previously been members of a youthful "Trad Jazz" band, the Red Onions Jazz Band, in which Humphreys, Lynch and Clyne played clarinet, tuba and piano respectively. They then recruited drummer Gavin Anderson and ex-Wild Cherries guitarist Rob Lovett to round out their line-up. They quickly rose to prominence in the local club scene, renowned for their exciting live act, which many compared to the Rolling Stones and Animals. The group's visual impact was heightened by their striking op-shop-mod stage attire and the growling, blues-influenced baritone voice of Humphreys, who is widely acknowledged as one of Australia's finest male pop-rock vocalists. The Loved Ones was the first Australian pop band to use electric piano as part of its regular stage set-up, and their distinctive keyboard-based sound set them apart from most of their contemporaries. They signed to the In Records label (a subsidiary of W&G Records) and shot to national prominence, scoring a major Australian hit with The Loved One, which reached Number 2 on the Australian Top 40 singles charts in 1966 (the song was an Australian hit again in 1981 when covered by INXS). Their second single for In Records, Everlovin' Man, reached Number 9 on the Australian Top 40 singles charts, also in 1966. Sad Dark Eyes, and a reworking of Fats Domino’s Blueberry Hill followed this. Pianist and musical director Ian Clyne left the group and moved to Sydney and was replaced by Treva Richards. They released an album in 1967 titled Magic Box, a collection of their singles, standards and original songs. The Loved Ones split later that year in October, just two years after they were formed. Magic Box is considered a classic recording and to this day in Australia it enjoys cult status and has reportedly never been out-of-print since it was released. The band reformed for one live tour in 1987 with Melbourne session drummer Peter Luscombe sitting in for Gavin Anderson. The album Live at Blueberry Hill followed, on Mushroom Records. The Loved Ones are about to step into the spotlight once more with their induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

A humbled The Loved Ones, on hearing of their imminent induction, said “We were kids who discovered we could actually write and play music we believed in ..... and other kids liked it too”.

Considered to be one of the pioneers of post punk and new wave in Australia, Models formed in Melbourne in 1978. The original line-up comprised Sean Kelly (vocals, guitar), Pierre Sutcliffe (bass), Ash Wednesday (synthesizer), and John Friedenfelds (drums). After only a handful of gigs Mark Ferrie was drafted in on bass in early '79. Andrew Duffield, on keyboards and electronica, replaced Ash Wednesday later that same year. The band released a couple of independent singles but was signed to Mushroom Records on the strength of their live performances and fanatical live following. Their self produced debut LP Alphabravocharliedeltaechofox trotgolf was released in 1980. The fresh sounds of its quirky, angular pop would be refined on their 1981 mini album Cut Lunch, which introduced Buster Stiggs on drums. Since its inception, the band had been sought out as an opening act for visiting international bands. The Stranglers, The Ramones, XTC and the B52s were amongst the many overseas tourists that Models supported in their early days. In 1982, Models were joined by James Freud on bass and Barton Price on drums and they released the single On, produced by Lobby Lloyd. 1983 saw the release of The Pleasure Of Your Company featuring the single I Hear Motion. It was Models first real commercial success and helped them score the prestigious support slot for David Bowie's 'Serious Moonlight' tour of Australia & New Zealand. In 1985, Roger Mason replaced Andrew Duffield and saxophonist James Valentine also joined the band. Models started to alter their sound as well, becoming more mainstream and danceable. The band was rewarded with their first big hit, Barbados in 1985, which climbed to number two on the national charts. The band's next single, Out of Mind Out of Sight, produced by Mark Opitz, skyrocketed straight to the top and even landed at number 36 on the American Billboard charts. Their final album, Media (1986) produced by Opitz and Julian Mendehlson, was released and spawned the singles Evolution, Let's Kiss and Hold On. In December 1986 and January 1987, the Models embarked on the massive 'Australian Made' tour, sharing the stage with INXS, Divinyls, Jimmy Barnes, Mental As Anything, The Saints and The Triffids. The changes in line-up and artistic direction that would have compromised lesser acts, have made Models a compelling and exciting band whose creativity and momentum has kept them at the forefront of the Australian music industry. In 1988, the band went into hiatus but has re-grouped periodically over the years to thrill their legion of fans with their unmistakable sound.

Sean Kelly from Models spoke on behalf of the band when he said "We're very excited. Most musicians would dream of this kind of acknowledgement and recognition. It's a huge honour!"

With their unique and distinctive guitar sounds and lyrics forever inspiring imagination, the church have grown without compromise into one of the most well-respected rock groups amongst peers and fans the world over. Formed in Sydney in 1980, the church has always been in a parallel orbit to the pop world, an utterly engaging art-rock trip that is far easier to experience than to describe. From the debut album Of Skins and Hearts (with national hit The Unguarded Moment) to the artistically and commercially successful Starfish (with the world-wide recognised hit Under the Milky Way and guitar driven Reptile), and iconic songs such as Almost With You and When You Were Mine through to 2009's lush, organic masterpiece Untitled #23 (the album that Rolling Stone Australia gave an unprecedented 5 star review), bassist and lead vocalist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer/producer Tim Powles have continued through three whole decades to pleasure their fans with a unerring sense of space, melody, beat driven prose and sonic charm. Of the church, legendary music writer and fan David Fricke wrote “At its most compelling, the band scrambles the real and the surreal with ease, rattling its stately guitarchitecture with howling north-wind echo and the troubled undertow of Kilbey’s enigmatic lyrics. It’s like being in the middle of a recurring but constantly evolving dream where only the faces remain the same.” A combination of chemistry, talent and desire for excellence has found the church in 2010 with the luxury of reflecting on their huge body of work, having never before stopped long enough to rest on any laurels. On their 30th anniversary the church continue to redefine what a rock band should be whether performing live or in the studio. ARIA is proud to induct them into the Hall of Fame.

On behalf of the church, Steve Kilbey said "We were all thrilled to hear of our impending induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame. To be honoured by an industry that we love being a part of, and to be in the Hall of Fame alongside bands that we’ve been fans of ourselves, is more than we ever expected”

GUERRILLA POETS PLOT CBD TAKE-OVER!

August 2nd 2010 05:17

A guerrilla word army is being formed on Tuesday 3 August, 11:30am at Stanley Street Station, East Sydney (cnr of Crown and Stanley Streets) when ten word artists will be revealed at the movement’s psychogeographic home-base, following a national call for word troopers to compete. The chosen will form a squad set to hit Sydney’s CBD with random acts of poetry from late August.

Part of the seventh annual Australian Poetry Festival (3-4 Sept) with the support of the City of Sydney, the army is led by Sydney creative team Token Imagination , a.k.a Jess Cook, Raymond Nedziak and Omar Hamwi.

Renowned street poets and headliners at the Festival, Tom Keily and Candy Royalle will work up some live word art at The Station for the announcement of the 10 winners – a public event. This is a great chance to catch Keily, part of the Love Lawn Crew and one of Australia’s leading street poets; and Royalle, a hip-hop, electronic artist famed for her passionate lyrics; kick start the Guerrilla Poets into action.

Stanley Street Station will be transformed with the installation of 800 colourful gorillas and large versions of the poetry speech bubble offering a sneak preview of the forthcoming strike. The Station will also launch their cheeky guerrilla menu – reviving elements of the Nuyorican Poet’s Café in NYC (circa 1973) – home to poets, rappers and spoken word artists.

Available during August and September, The Station’s very own Naked Lunch (three courses $40 or individually) honouring the film/ novel based on famous American Beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg's 1958 manuscript, lets you chew the fat literally with a few key guerilla poets to fully enjoy the experience.

Tuck into A homage to Mr Ginsberg ($12) - fresh salad of wild leaves, nuts, fruit, flaxseed dressing & shoots; The Patti Smith ($24), for the godmother of the spoken word punk movement - stir-fried vegetables, roots, leaves, nuts and a little chicken in a spicy sauce with rice; to finish up with sweet treat For you, My H. Rollins…($10) ‘cause we all know he’s a sweetie inside... banana and apple crumble served with ice cream & vanilla custard.

For those in need of the hard stuff, down your existential worries with The Kerouac ($16) - Absinthe, Creme de Cassis, cloudy apple juice, fresh mint - a tribute to literary iconoclast, American novelist, Jack Kerouac. “The poet died of the bottle at 47, but the king of the beat generation sure could write,” says the Station’s manager Bec Foley.

Jess Cook, Guerrilla Poetry’s founder says “the winning poets announced at Stanley Street will have their speech bubbles duplicated to make 100 bubbles per poet, which we’ll be planting all over, fast paced and covert.”

“The Guerrilla’s mission is to perpetrate the urbanscape and provide public access to poetry, with finders free to pick up artworks and take them away as a keepsake or simply transport to a destination of their choice,” she says.

Termed ‘temporary graffiti installations’, the movement follows a public art trend currently sweeping Europe and the States; and brings interactive, transportable and fun art to Sydneysiders, to discover and enjoy at their leisure.

Join the guerrilla movement and front up Tuesday 3 August at 11:30am at Stanley Street Station, East Sydney to find out more.

Friday nights are all about fending off the cold with a little disco fever! A Disco on Ice, complete with giant disco ball, and music from Future Classic DJs kicks off 9 July with Arithmatix!, the disco alias of Sydney DJ Michael Di Francesco - one of the first artists Future Classic ever released on their record label. Spruce Lee hits the decks 16 July with blistering dance floor bombs and heartfelt soul jams. Bring clothing to swap, participate in a hands-on workshop, and listen to a series of talks and panel discussions about labour rights and ethical fashion alongside an ethical fashion parade.

Winterland brings all the magic of a European winter festival to Sydney’s inner west, with loads of fun activities for all ages. Throughout July, the old Eveleigh rail yards will transform with a dazzling indoor ice rink, live music, designer art markets curated by The Finders Keepers team, food stalls serving alpine cuisine, dancing and more to get everyone out and about during the chillier days.

The RHYTHM Indian Dance * Music

May 7th 2010 14:06
INDIA'S RHYTHM - ANCIENT DANCE, EXPLODING BEATS, MODERN MOVES

The Rhythm brings to life, artistically, Mahatma Gandhi's unity in diversity vision for India, showcasing a phenomenal selection of rare traditional dance, modern styles and music from across the nation, at Sydney's Seymour Centre on Saturday May 22 (7pm $60/$30).

A window to the heart and soul of India, The Rhythm presents an incredible fusion of Carnatic, Hindustani (Classical Indian) & Western music; five extraordinary dances – showcasing four of the eight classical forms of Indian dance, and one contemporary style; twenty-five of India’s most celebrated artists; and in the spirit of Gandhi’s charity, all proceeds go to The Sydney Children’s Hospital, Westmead

Brilliantly colourful dancers enthral and seduce with two ancient temple dance styles. The first, Odissi, is a classical dance from Oriya - eastern India, is one of the country's oldest dances, depicted in India's revered and ancient Konark Sun Temple, Brahmesvar Temple ruins and Jagannath. The dance is considered a water dance and is part of the five traditional elemental dances. Originally performed by devadasis (servants of the lord) or temple girls in the ancient Jagannath temple at Puri, and later in the royal courts of Mughal India. Odissi dance has been celebrated as the perfect vehicle to balance sexuality and spirituality, according to Tantrism. It is performed to near perfection by Meera Das, Jana Lopamudhra Sathapathy, Isha Mandal Rithika, and Jana Malavika.

Bharathanatyam, the second dance originating in the temples, is a classical Tamil dance from the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. Performed at The Rhythm by Sastri Savita, the dance is considered the fifth Veda, representing India’s equivalent to the Chinese concept of Yin and Yang. By merging lasya - graceful feminine lines and movements, and Tandava Ananda Thandavam (the dance of Shiva), or masculine movements; this mesmerising Hindu performance celebrates the eternal universe through beauty in the material body. Another of the elemental dances, Bharathanatyam, is also known as the fire-dance, resembling the movements of a dancing flame.

The Rhythm also showcases north Indian Kathak dance, meaning to tell a story. From nomadic bards telling mythological tales. in village squares; to the north Indian Mughal courts; Kathak dancers were influenced by visitors from abroad, and developed straight legs; flamboyant and elaborate rhythmic footwork accentuated by 150 ankle bells on each leg; and signature 'chakkars' (spins) - executed on the heel, from whirling dervishes; and became practiced by women ‘tawaifs’ or courtesans. A beautiful dance merging a rich history of temple and mythological/ religious influence and court and romanticism; Kathak dance is an athletic experience for the eyes and ears; with lightning speed pirouettes and rhythmic footwork set to tabla and pakhawaj. This dance is performed by Anjana Jha, Pachaniya Sandhya, Gangrade Deepti and Savita Adhikari.

The traditional north-east Indian dance of Manipur - near the border of Myanmar (Burma), Manipuri, is performed at The Rhythm by Narmada Devi. A delicate, lyrical, graceful and devotional dance developed by ardent worshippers of Lord Krishna; Manipuri is accompanied by drum, cymbals, stringed and wind instruments; and a singer recites classical poetry from significant Hindu religious texts. An undulating and soft performance, the dancer makes rounded movements avoiding jerks, sharp edges or straight lines; with delicate foot movements, the feet are neither put down nor lifted up at precise rhythmic points, but slightly earlier or later to express these moments more effectively. Of special significance is the attire of the dancers, with ballooning skirts and crisp transparent veils.

For a modern twist, contemporary and improvisational Indian dance troupe Samudra, explores, experiments and synthesises traditional styles with new ones rounding out the Indian dance experience.

Leaping and whirling fantastically to eclectic Indian rhythms and beats, the dance troupe is credited for constant innovation and unpredictable methods.

Expressing moving art by stretch out, closing in and bursting into multitudinous activities depicting a world in motion, Samudra weave new aesthetics from tradition and improvisation. The ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu, Rope Malakhamb and Yoga, are an integral part of their repertoire.

The style is performed by Madhu Gopinath, Vakkom Sajeev and others.

Produced by Soorya Krishnamoorthy, founder of the Soorya Society - a not-for-profit artistic organisation promoting Indian arts and culture, The Rhythm has been performed on 100 stages worldwide. Previous Soorya productions include Sangamam – also performed all over the world; and the groundbreaking Soorya Festival, one of India’s most prestigious and longest running cultural events.

East Sydney Psychogeo

May 7th 2010 13:06
A DEGUST-STATION FOR EAST SYDNEY

Step off the predictable path, and discover Stanley Street Station, Sydney's newest urban playground

Public transport never looked so good with the addition of East Sydney's newest small bar, eating house and place to play - Stanley Street Station (commuter or light rail - it's up to you) - popping up on the corner of Stanley and Crown Streets.

The STATION
The latest stop on the city's social tracks, The Station joins the area's great stash of cool local haunts - Pocket, Pong's and The Commons - serving up fun and creative spaces to chill out and enjoy the cityscape in unpretentious style. A place to rest a while; Stanley Street Station offers punters a unique and comfortable platform to look, think, taste and talk; before setting off on new urban discoveries.

Opening with Faxhibition by The Groop - a collective of Sydney artists using one fax machine and one brief - The fax of life this month, the Stanley Street Station showcases art works using that obsolete and restrictive business communication system to represent the way society has devalued the art of communication, with all cash from sales go to Medecins Sans Frontieres.

By day the Station is light and breezy, with outdoor tables and big open windows to sit back, relax and observe the East Sydney bustle over delicious wraps, sambo's and wholesome meals or small share plates. By night, low lighting, flickering candles, a cosy bar, huge couches, board-games, good tunes and an affordable well-chosen wine list waits; with owner/chef Greg Vankuyk's hearty food served quick, to heat the body and warm the soul.

Cocktails with names like Mr Dubord (who studied how urban landscapes effect emotions and behaviour); The Metropolitan; Surrealists Sour; and The Moore Club (one for Sydney's legendary Lord Mayor, Clover Moore) set the taste and tone for a strong local focus.

A comfy setting for meeting up with friends in the lounge room style bar, intimate dinners in the dining area, or for drinks and bites for groups large or small in either; Stanley Street Station is based loosely on the concept of psychogeography - the arty notion of jolting pedestrians off their predictable paths, hopefully resulting in new awareness's of the urban landscape. And the deck-out designed by Sydney artist Amy Yongsiri certainly aspires to its precursor - the utopia of unitary urbanism - encouraging spaces within the 'functional' city dedicated to continual exploration, leisure, and stimulated ambience.

Uncover the well stocked psychogeography library, and shelves packed with favourite games and more bizarre amusements. Explorations can be made of the tiny living scenes of citizens in glass terrariums; large interpretive views of Sydney through artists' eyes; miniature transport themed 'accident' scenes; digital montages of memorable railway cinema moments flickering along; and a range of maps to inspire psycho-travellers.

The menu (lunch & dinner, Mon-Sun, midday-midnight) has a modern food should be fun approach where flavour and simplicity dominate. Leading with fresh Australian produce, the communal menu of tasting plates compliment the democracy of the bar - or double as starters. They include sauteed school prawns with lemon and lime, sea salt and aioli; pink lamb rump with balsamic onions and goat labne; and grilled chorizo and pumpkin with rocket and Murray River salt flakes.

Wholesome mains or biggins come with delicious home-made accompaniments and include a 300g New Yorker with potato frites, cafe de Paris and peppery rocket; grilled masala barramundi with fragrant rice and creamy mild chilli sauce; and lamb shanks cooked in a dozen herbs and spices, green vegetable broth and mash. Lunch has many of the smalls and mains plus a brilliant selection of wraps and sambos.

Sweet treats follow the hearty casual style; with pannacotta, mixed berry compote and vanilla bean gelato; warm coconut macaroon and chocolate brownie with liquid chocolate; and a triumvirate of tasty Australian cheeses with lavash, muscatels & predilecta guava paste. And lazy weekend breakfasts (Sat-Sun 8am-2pm) kick off with a healthy selection of toasted muesli, seasonal fruit salad, natural yoghurt; free range eggs; Barossa gluten free sausages, eggs benny and more; with a good range of smoothies, frappes, shakes, coffees and teas.

A place equally as easy to sit on a pinot; read a book, or chew the fat, The Station gets the mind wandering. Practice your freedom to drift with no pre-planned expectations. Grab a wine, a beer, a dinner, a game of Uno or backgammon over coffee, or emails over lunch; and enjoy and observe the city in action.

Stanley Street Station is open daily for lunch and dinner and on weekends for breakfast. The well-stocked and well-priced wine list and cocktails invites travellers to kick-back and relax, or observe and engage, with a well-deserved drink and meal.

PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY

Stanley Street Station draws upon the notion of psychogeography which aspires freely to the utopia of unitary urbanism, and is dedicated to encouraging an atmosphere of continual exploration, leisure, and stimulating ambience in Sydney. The Station uses the metaphor of train travel to create a comfortable space from which to wander through the drinks, food, artworks, books and games. The Station moves at a pace similar to that of a real train station - slowly and more relaxed in the lounging area, to a movement and buzz around the bar and eating area.

AMY YONGSIRI-DESIGNER
The concepts that run through the work of artist and designer Amy Yongsiri often revolve around ways to entice a wanderer to stop and linger for a little while. Amy uses narrative to engage with audiences and encourage them to draw out their own stories. She exhibits her work at various spaces including China Heights, Saatchi & Saatchi galleries, and Powerhouse museum; and teaches art and design. Familiar with the challenges of designing for an eating space, Amy grew up in her parent's Sydney restaurants and saw them through various incarnations.

GREG VANKUYK- HEAD CHEF/OWNER

Not too many people can claim they've cooked for the Queen, Margaret Thatcher, Sting and the Dalai Lama. Greg Vankuyk had the rather grand opportunity working as Sous Chef at London's House of Lords. Prior to the Queen, Greg worked under Serge Dansereau at the two-hatted Cables Restaurant, at Sydney's Regent Hotel; as Head Chef at Heritage listed Moreton's where he led his brigade to win AHA Bistro of the Year in 2004; and headed up the kitchen at North Sydney's Firehouse Hotel kitchen for four years. Raised on a farm in New Zealand, Greg's love of the land and fresh produce resonates today with his clean and damn delicious food. Stanley Street Station is his first culinary (ad)venture with business partner and chef Hari Chauhan.

HARI CHAUHAN- CHEF/OWNER

Born and raised in India, Hari discovered just how much he really REALLY (no, really) loved food whilst working as a cook in various hotels while studying in New Delhi. Hari moved to Moscow to work and train as a chef and moved to Australia in 1995 acquiring and heading up the kitchens of regional Indian restaurants in Orange, Bathurst and Sydney, including owning and managing the Five Dock Tandoori House. Hari met Greg while working as Sous Chef at the Firehouse in North Sydney. Hari brings a spicy twist to Greg's good wholesome cooking.

BEC FOLEY- MANAGER

Bec is Stanley Street Station's funky and formidable floor-mistress. So don't misbehave. Just kidding, she's really very sweet. Bec's well-acquainted with all the cool digs in Sydney, having worked her magic at many of them including the Victoria Room (where she helped them to win Best Cocktail Bar at the esteemed Bar Show Awards in 2006) and at Gazebo Wine Garden as the restaurant and training manager (during which time Gazebo won Best Wine Bar in the Australia Bar Show Awards). Seeing a trend? Bec's also served at Bills one, two and three as manager, and now brings her charm and know-how to the Station.

The classic 17th century fairytale The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods is irreverently transported to modern day Australia in this exciting new musical theatre production. Beaudy, written by Australian musician, Michael Orland is a funny contemporary musical set in a small Australian town.

Beaudy is a memorable evening of song, dance and good old-fashioned story telling. Australianised and updated, Beaudy is a spruced up old fashioned tale filled with great original music, laughs and familiar icons and is at Parade Theatres from July 7.

Beaudy features a talented and exciting cast of sixteen including Stephen Fisher-King, Lizzie Taylor, and The Four Kinsmen's Scott Radburn and is accompanied by a full live orchestra performing twenty wonderful songs.

'It has taken me 28 years to write this show and now we are going to present it with all the passion that led me to start on the wonderful journey all those years ago' said writer producer Michael Orland.

Beaudy transports the audience from European forest in the 17th century to a contemporary small Australian country town where there is a christening for Laura, whose mother died in childbirth and whose father the town relies on for its future. A woman from the past, now a wealthy black widow crashes the party and prophesies Laura's untimely death before her nineteenth birthday.

To best protect Laura, the man surrenders the care of his daughter to his best friends living in Sydney. As Laura approaches her nineteenth birthday, she escapes from her overprotective family leading to the apparent fulfillment of the prophecy. Her father, losing heart at his daughter's tragedy, lets his business unravel. Consequently, the entire town descends into despair. However, one young man has not surrendered hope -

Playwright and composer of Beaudy, Michael Orland has an underground Australian music legacy following his musical success on the local Sydney band scene in the late seventies and early eighties. Orland collaborated with a number of bands as a sound engineer and was a part of the much loved Harold Holt and the Sharks and Cocktails at 7. After years of playing, teaching and working as a sound engineer for both bands and venues, Orland has crystallized his excellent knowledge of music and passion for musical theatre with Beaudy.

Recipient of nine MO Awards including Australian Variety performer of the Year and Australian Male Vocalist of the Year, Stephen Fisher-King has performed lead roles in major musical theatre productions Hello Dolly, Evita, Cats and toured Australasia in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Fisher-King has recorded three CDs, Where Do I Begin, Vocal Treasures and Inspiration and has performed principal roles in operas and operettas including La Boheme.

The Four Kinsmen's talented Scott Radburn was on the Cats South Korean Tour and was in the 1984 production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Between his time on stage, he was on Nine Network's Midday Show and Hey-Hey it's Saturday and hosted Wave FM's Breakfast program.

Session vocalist and entertainer, Lizzie Taylor is the recipient of eight MO Awards and two Australian Club Entertainment (ACE) Awards. A voice specialist, she has wowed audiences across the globe with her vocal and visual tributes to a variety of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Cher, Shirley Bassey, Shania Twain, Tina Turner, Anastacia, J-Lo, Fran Drescher's The Nanny, Absolutely Fabulous' Edina, Effie and Kath and Kim. Lizzie Taylor is in constant high demand for Corporate Events, Private Functions and the Sydney Club
Circuit, not only for her One Woman Show but also as a Presenter and Session Vocalist.

EDGES – A Song Cycle

March 10th 2010 06:40
An impressive collection of character-driven songs... The light pop and theatre-styled music is accompanied by well-crafted lyrics that tell great stories, score solid laughs and touch some lovely emotions. - Broadway World

A fresh and innovative new theatre company is set to debut in March when it brings EDGES – A Song Cycle to Sydney’s Parade Theatres.

James Anthony Productions is the brain-child of Sydney-based young theatre professionals Stephen Doorey, George Youakim and Alex Mair. The trio recently joined forces to develop and produce new and progressive theatrical work throughout Australia. Their inaugural production of EDGES at the Parade Theatres, Parade Studio commencing on March 25 will see the first large scale production of the show in Australia.

EDGES is a new musical song cycle which explores the boundaries, limitations and journeys of young adulthood. Seen through the eyes of one of Sydney's freshest and most sought-after young directors, Benita de Wit, the show follows the journeys of four burgeoning young adults as they experience a vast array of universally classic 'coming of age' questions and life events. There’s laughter and attitude aplenty!

Written and composed by the 2007 Jonathan Larson Award recipients Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, EDGES is no typical musical production. In 18 thematically-linked songs presented by an ensemble cast of four, it explores a variety of themes including peer pressure, false expectations, career drive, family negativity and narrow-mindedness.

The cast features exciting young talents Helena Wehbe, Christie Wykes, George Youakim and Keegan Joyce who are sure to deliver a performance guaranteed to pull at the heart-strings, evoke the laughter of recognition and revive memories of what it’s like to be teetering on the edges of youth, love, commitment & risk.

With musical direction by Stephen Doorey together with scenic design by Alex Duffy, costume design by Alanah Koedam and lighting design by Alex Mair, the production promises a thrilling and spectacular experience!

Performances take place March 25 - April 1, Monday - Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 8pm at the Parade Studio, Parade Theatres complex (NIDA), 215 Anzac Parade, Kensington. Tickets $39 for adults and $29 for concessions and students and are available through Ticketek (13 28 49 or www.ticketek.com.au) or at the door on the night (if available).

James Anthony Production's presentation of Edges is made possible by the generous support of Unibit.

AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA

March 8th 2010 23:26
‘TAPAS’
AN UNEXPECTED (AND TASTY) ALBUM FROM
THE AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA
Released March 5

“What happens when you take 17th century music into a smoky dance hall?” says Paul Dyer artistic director of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. “You get something a little daring, sexy, and delicious. You get Tapas!”

“It’s our 21st, so we thought we’d take the Baroque out for a spin. We took baroque dance beats and love songs, and then we improvised till we found a new sound to stir up new emotions.

“Its old music on old instruments, made new. It’s all those gorgeous Brandenburg flavours in a spicy mix – dueling violins, a haunting lirone, spanish guitar, a divine soprano, bells, castanets, harpsichord, there’s even an old school wind machine. It’s ecstatic and highly intoxicating!”

ABC Classics releases the Tapas CD on 5 March and special Tapas performances will take place in Sydney and Melbourne later this month in a rare live concert performance of a Brandenburg recording.

“Our last disc won our 4th ARIA Award and has received rave reviews internationally, including an Editor’s Choice in the prestigious Gramophone magazine. But Tapas is going to take audiences on a whole new journey.”

“Tapas is also a tribute to the music-making of my parents – Mum, a pianist with a gift for improvisation, and Dad, who played the drums. Their influences of classical, swing, jazz and pop have led us to the rhythms of Tapas.”

“We’ve taken 21 years of historically informed performance practice and thrown it into the 21st century. Ladies and Gentlemen, Tapas is served!”
