Riverside Theatres

Sunday, 25th September 2011 at 3pm

For One Performance Only

The SBS Youth Orchestra is bringing a selection of musical works that touch on moments of Drama and Theatre to Riverside Theatres on Sunday, 25 September at 3pm in the exciting concert, Expressions of Identity conducted by Geoffrey Gartner.

The SBS Youth Orchestra collaborates with Orange Conservatorium of Music to present a program which accents the importance of personal and cultural identity.

“It is always wonderful to have the incredibly talented young musicians from the SBS Youth Orchestra come to Riverside Theatres. The traditions from which the pieces are taken are musically rich and interesting,” said Director of Riverside Theatres, Robert Love.

Jean Sibelius is seen as a composer whose works played a pivotal part in the expression of Finnish cultural and national identity. Ernest Bloch, was born in Switzerland and said to have been influenced by German, French and Jewish musical traditions. His concertino for Flute and Viola is a delightful piece which features Sally Walker on flute and Andrew Baker on viola. Brahms wrote his famous Academic Festival Overture as a thank you to the University of Breslau. Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances were inspired by Brahms and overtly nationalistic. The Concert features invited soloists Andrew Baker on viola and Sally Walker on flute. ROCK OF AGES

August 7th 2011 01:32
ROCK OF AGES
- to open at Sydney's Theatre Royal

Saturday 14 January 2012

For updates and presale opportunities

Exuberant,hilarious, fantastically slick fun!
– The Age

ROCK OF AGES, opened in Melbourne to standing ovations and five star reviews, and now this five-time Tony Award nominated Broadway musical will come to Sydney and open at the Theatre Royal on 14 January 2012 for a strictly limited season.

ROCK OF AGES is a hilarious, feel-good love story told through the hit songs: ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’,‘Don’t Stop Believin’’, ‘High Enough’,‘The Final Countdown’, ‘We Built This City’ and‘More Than Words’ by iconic rockers Foreigner, Journey, Styx, REOSpeedwagon, Poison, Starship, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and many more.

Set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, Drew is a big-city dreamer who desperately wants to be a rocker, and works in L.A.’smost legendary club. He meets Sherrie, and they fall in love to thegreatest songs of the ‘80s. It’s an awesomely good time wherebig hair meets big dreams in a rock comedy romance.

"After a great season in Melbourne to enthusiastic audiences standing, singing and dancing along every night, ROCK OF AGES is thrilled to make its way to Sydney. ROCK OF AGES is a cross between concert, the best of musical theatre and comedy- come and party - what a way to start the year off!" said Producer Rodney Rigby.

The cast of ROCK OF AGES is led by Amy Lehpamer and Justin Burford, who have taken Melbourne by storm and rocked their ways intothe hearts of everyone who attends the show.

With a couple of ARIAs under his belt, an APRA nomination for ‘Song of the Year’, record sales reaching Platinum status and sold out tours in Australia and internationally with his band End Of Fashion, the Herald Sun calls Justin Burford “hugely appealing” and The Age writes “what a superb voice—like honey with gravel in it.”

The cast delivers a brilliant fusion of comic inanity and high-octane rock songs.
– The Age

Amy Lehpamer, who has been critically acclaimed as“impressive,” “superb,” and “terrific,”plays Sherrie. Amy’s theatre credits include Malthouse/VictorianOpera’s acclaimed The Threepenny Opera, and Eddie Perfect’s Shane Warne The Musical. Amy is featured in the HBO/Dreamworksseries The Pacific.

The ROCK OF AGES cast includes - Francine Cain, Emma Clark, Brendan Coustley, Rachel Dunham, Alexander Ellis, Samantha Hagen, Lincoln Hall, Anthony Harkin, Melanie Hawkins, Brent Hill, Shaye Hopkins, John O’Hara, Jensen Overend, Thern Reynolds, Ellen Sutton, David Whitney and marks the return to the Australian stage for Michael Falzon, whom the Herald Sun says "lends sexual charisma to monstrously vain Stacee Jaxx."

Infectious,intoxicating and exhilarating!
– The Australian

ROCK OF AGES was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical,Best Costume Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design for a Musical. New Line Records released the Original Broadway Cast Recording in June 2009; it features 28 songs from the show.

ROCK OF AGES is now playing on Broadway across America on a U.S. National Tour, played Toronto in 2010 and will open in London in September 2011.

ROCK OF AGES is now being made into a major motion picture starring Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Russell Brand.

ROCK OF AGES is currently playing in Melbourne. It will open a limited season in Brisbane on 13 November before coming to Sydney.

3Penny Opera

July 30th 2011 23:15
Sydney Theatre Company and Asteron present
the Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera production of
Bertolt Brecht & Kurt Weill's

The Threepenny Opera
Text by Raimondo Cortese.
Lyrics by Jeremy Sams.

1 to 24 September 2011. Opening Night: 3 September 2011 at 8.00pm.
Sydney Theatre, 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

Featuring an exceptional cast including Paul Capsis (as Jenny), Jolyon James (as Tiger Brown), Luke Joslin (as Filch), Lucy Maunder (as Polly), Amanda Muggleton (as Mrs Peachum), Eddie Perfect (as Macheath) and Grant Smith (as Mr Peachum) the Brecht-Weill musical masterpiece, The Threepenny Opera, is at Sydney Theatre from 1 to 24 September 2011, opening Saturday 3 September.

The most notorious anti-hero to storm a stage, Macheath - or Mack The Knife as he's known on the streets - is the original city criminal who's never met a law, a woman or a cop he couldn't break. That is until he challenges the supremacy of the Beggar King Peachum and his empire of manufactured woes. With Peachum and cunning cop Tiger Brown on his case the last thing Mack needs is a couple of molls competing for ownership of him. But when it comes to the ladies, this Lothario throws caution to the wind and leaps in head first.

Taking John Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728) as the basis for a critique of the greed, lust, evil and corruption they considered to be at heart of bourgeois society, Brecht and Weill incorporated the danger and hedonism of 1920's Berlin music and cabaret to create a 20th Century milestone of musical theatre. At the heart of the Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera co-production, directed by Michael Kantor and conducted by Richard Gill, is the raw, jazzy and intensely beautiful music.

Raimondo Cortese's vivid adaptation, featuring lyrics by Jeremy Sams, captures that spirit of the Weimar republic at its height, while superimposing the action onto recognisably Australian streets.

Sydney Theatre Company presents The Threepenny Opera as part of Berlin Sydney: a program of theatre, music, cabaret and exhibitions inspired by 20s and 30s Berlin held at leading arts venues across Sydney.

Director: Michael Kantor. Conductor: Richard Gill. Set Designer: Peter Corrigan. Costume Designer: Anna Cordingley. Lighting Designer: Paul Jackson. Choreographer: Kate Denborough.

Eddie Perfect & Paul Capsis (in)
