DIAMONDS ARE FOR TREVOR

State Theatre

One Night Only – Friday 2 March

The likeness was uncanny - Bassey was barely exaggerated. Close your eyes and that singular voice, as big as a Vegas casino, torched the room, convincing you that diamonds were forever
– Sydney Morning Herald (Trevor in I’m Every Woman)

She’s gold, gowns and glamour. Champagne, charisma and camp. She’s lamé, luscious and LOUD. Be-sequinned, be-jewelled... BASSEY.

The one-and-only Dame is channelled by the irrepressible Trevor Ashley, in this spectacular two-act concert. Performing over eighteen of her biggest hits, including Big Spender, Goldfinger, Never, Never, Never, This is My Life, Get the Party Started, History Repeating, and Diamonds are Forever - plus a few songs the Dame has never got around to singing - Ashley will delight you with big gowns, big hair, and an even bigger voice.

Shirley Bassey has become an icon of popular music throughout the past fifty years, and DIAMONDS ARE FOR TREVOR celebrates her musical legacy in a stunning evening. The Welsh-born singer somehow dragged herself from her close to poverty upbringing in Tiger Bay, to become one of the world’s most celebrated concert artists. Using humour, wit and class, Ashley will tell her story like it’s never, never, never been told before.

He not only nails the style, but does so with feeling in a touching performance. A master of impersonation. – Daily Telegraph

Trevor Ashley has headlined two of Australia’s biggest musicals (Hairspray, Priscilla) and played every major cabaret stage and festival across the country with his one man shows. I’m Every Woman sold out six performances at the Sydney Opera House, and Liza (On an E) has garnered standing ovations and unanimous rave reviews at all major festivals. Collaborating again with writer Phil Scott (The Wharf Revue), and for the first time with director Craig Ilott (Smoke & Mirrors), Ashley will be dressed by Oscar, BAFTA, Olivier and Tony award-winning costume designer Tim Chappel(Priscilla).

Joined on stage by a 14 piece orchestra conducted by Daniel Edmonds, take a tour of Shirley’s life, complete with feathers, flash, and frequent diva tantrums. Hilarious, brilliant and often moving, when Ashley goes head to head with the one and only Dame Shirley Bassey, it will prove once and for all that diamonds ARE for Trevor.

Trevor Ashley is a born performer. – The Age

An acerbic, hilarious crowd-pleaser. – Herald Sun

3Penny Opera

July 30th 2011 23:15
Sydney Theatre Company and Asteron present
the Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera production of
Bertolt Brecht & Kurt Weill's

The Threepenny Opera
Text by Raimondo Cortese.
Lyrics by Jeremy Sams.

1 to 24 September 2011. Opening Night: 3 September 2011 at 8.00pm.
Sydney Theatre, 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

Featuring an exceptional cast including Paul Capsis (as Jenny), Jolyon James (as Tiger Brown), Luke Joslin (as Filch), Lucy Maunder (as Polly), Amanda Muggleton (as Mrs Peachum), Eddie Perfect (as Macheath) and Grant Smith (as Mr Peachum) the Brecht-Weill musical masterpiece, The Threepenny Opera, is at Sydney Theatre from 1 to 24 September 2011, opening Saturday 3 September.

The most notorious anti-hero to storm a stage, Macheath - or Mack The Knife as he's known on the streets - is the original city criminal who's never met a law, a woman or a cop he couldn't break. That is until he challenges the supremacy of the Beggar King Peachum and his empire of manufactured woes. With Peachum and cunning cop Tiger Brown on his case the last thing Mack needs is a couple of molls competing for ownership of him. But when it comes to the ladies, this Lothario throws caution to the wind and leaps in head first.

Taking John Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728) as the basis for a critique of the greed, lust, evil and corruption they considered to be at heart of bourgeois society, Brecht and Weill incorporated the danger and hedonism of 1920's Berlin music and cabaret to create a 20th Century milestone of musical theatre. At the heart of the Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera co-production, directed by Michael Kantor and conducted by Richard Gill, is the raw, jazzy and intensely beautiful music.

Raimondo Cortese's vivid adaptation, featuring lyrics by Jeremy Sams, captures that spirit of the Weimar republic at its height, while superimposing the action onto recognisably Australian streets.

Sydney Theatre Company presents The Threepenny Opera as part of Berlin Sydney: a program of theatre, music, cabaret and exhibitions inspired by 20s and 30s Berlin held at leading arts venues across Sydney.

Director: Michael Kantor. Conductor: Richard Gill. Set Designer: Peter Corrigan. Costume Designer: Anna Cordingley. Lighting Designer: Paul Jackson. Choreographer: Kate Denborough.

Eddie Perfect & Paul Capsis (in)

Cast: Johanna Allen, Paul Capsis, Jolyon James, Luke Joslin, Lucy Maunder, Amanda Muggleton, Eddie Perfect, Angela Scundi, Dimity Shepherd, Grant Smith, John Xintavelonis, Michael Whalley. Music performed live by Ensemble Weill.

CABARET by Kander And Ebb

April 8th 2011 00:23
CABARET for Sydney's South

Before Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman, there was CABARET - the ground-breaking, sexy, funny, shocking, thrilling and totally memorable Broadway musical - also by John Kander and Fred Ebb.

It became a Hollywood blockbuster starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Gray and continues to resonate with audiences the world over.

Now Shire Music Theatre brings the brilliant and popular show to Sydney this May.

Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it focuses on nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw.

A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at Kit Kat Klub (where “even the orchestra is beautiful”) which serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of late Weimar Germany and the spectre of approaching Nazism throughout the show.

In this production, which follows Shire Music Theatre’s acclaimed recent offerings of Spring Awakening, Side Show and I Love You Because director Lauren Kate Butler sought to bring out the darker side of the show to harshly contrast the cheekiness, fun and vibrancy of its music. “I aim for the main characters to be full and with realistic qualities,” says Butler, “so the audience relate and don't pull away when the story becomes more serious. Likewise the set contrasts simple dull-coloured pre-war reality with the colourful – but false - reality of the Kit Kat Club."

Starring Brendan Hay as the Emcee, Katie Headrick as Sally Bowles, Joel Duffy as Clifford Bradshaw, Jennifer Barker as Fraulein Schneider, Kerstyn Walsh as Fraulein Kost, Ray Dubber as Herr Schultz, Brad Facey as Ernst Ludwig, Sam Larielle as Bobby, Tyler Hoggard as Victor and Claire Janes, Lisa Eastman, Kerstyn Walsh, Kira Nelson and Ebony Black as Frenchie, Lulu, Rosie, Helga and Texas (“the fabulous Cabaret Girls”).

Plus an all-singing, all-dancing, all bumping and grinding ensemble cast.
