The Dynamites

December 5th 2010 00:50
The Dynamites Feat Charles Walker
Touring Australia Dec-Jan

“KABOOM!” In Stores Jan 7th via Top Shelf/MGM
Sydney Festival
If the first attention-grabbing horn lines of The Dynamites album Kaboom! evoke a dramatic curtain call from a late ‘60’s soul concert at the Apollo Theater, it’s no accident. After all, that’s exactly where Charles Walker, the band’s singer and front man, first cut his teeth as a performer. When the revolutionary ‘new bag’ now known as funk first made the scene, Walker was right there in the thick of it, opening for the likes of James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Etta James, and Wilson Pickett, and imbibing himself in a cultural movement’s genesis. Walker recorded on many of the most reputed soul labels of that era, including Champion, Chess and Decca.

The Dynamites and Charles have been touring the U.S. and Europe extensively since their formation in 2007 and this will be their 2nd trip to Australia after first hitting our shores in April of this year for Byron Bay Bluesfest. Their 2nd album “Burn It Down” was released at the same time and received strong alternative radio support including being named a Feature Album on both 2SER (Sydney) and PBS (Melbourne).

“12 cuts of rambunctious virtuosity… Exceptional stuff” – Scene Magazine

Freshly partnered with Top Shelf Productions, The Dynamites Feat Charles Walker return to Australia THIS MONTH, for what promises to be a mind-blowing string of summer festivals shows. To celebrate, they will be making their debut album “Kaboom!” available in stores Jan 7th via Top Shelf/MGM. Catch the band:

In the early ‘60’s, Charles Walker’s group ‘Little Charles and the Sidewinders’ became one of the hottest acts on the New York club scene, residing for many years as the house band at the legendary Harlem jazz and soul/R&B venue, Small’s Paradise. All this, combined with his Tennessee background, made Walker a natural to be included in the Country Music Hall of Fame’s ‘Night Train to Nashville’ exhibit. As Doyle Davis, now owner of Outta Sight Records (the U.S. label that releases The Dynamites’ records) milled through the exhibit, curator Michael Gray raved about Walker’s recent performance at an event promoting the exhibit’s Night Train to Nashville release on Lost Highway Records. Davis knew then and there that he’d found the singer that Bill Elder (a.k.a. Leo Black), The Dynamites’ founder, had been searching for.

The result is The Dynamites Featuring Charles Walker, a full and heavy, explosive, “rawthentic” super soul outfit fronted by a dynamic, tried and true soul veteran in top form.

The Dynamites are far from being alone in their second millennium pursuit of rekindling soul-funk’s original flames. Spearheaded by The Dynamites good friends and frequent touring partners ‘Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings’, a renaissance of funk and soul is snatching up listeners all around the globe. As a New York Times article titled ‘What’s Going On? Everything Soul is New Again,’ says loud and clear: soul music is making a formidable comeback. “More than at any time in recent memory soul music’s pressing syncopation and stirring hollers are churning within the popular mainstream.”

Walker is relaxed and at the top of his game and any discerning listener can feel it. The fuse has been lit. “Kaboom!” is readymade for detonation. And as comeback albums for soul artists like Charles Walker hit the charts more and more, it seems the public is ready too.

SHORT SWEET SYDNEY 2011 LAUNCH

SHORT & SWEET SYDNEY 2011 LAUNCH

170 plays. 800 australian artists. short sweet.

Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) will host the launch of the Sydney 2011 Short Sweet Theatre festival on Tuesday 7 December from 6pm.

NIDA’s elegant Nancy Fairfax Foyer is the vibrant venue as hundreds of Sydney’s finest exponents of the shortened theatrical form gather to hear the official announcement of which ten-minute gems will premiere in Sydney this summer.

Short & Sweet founder Mark Cleary, Short & Sweet Sydney Festival Director Alex Broun as well as Sydney 2011 participating artists such as Aarne Neeme, Christopher Stollery, Kate Gaul, Rachael Coopes, Julie Hamilton, Lorna Lesley and Samantha Tolj will be on hand to mark the occasion.

Short & Sweet Theatre Sydney 2011 will present 170 works from January to February in two parallel venues - Newtown Theatre Wed-Sun for 8 weeks from 5 Jan and The Parade Theatres (NIDA) Tues-Sat for three weeks from Feb 8. The festival, which features independent judges as well as audience voting, climaxes at the Gala Finals – on 11 and 12 March.

Short & Sweet began life at the Newtown Theatre in 2002 and has expanded to Melbourne (2005), Singapore (2007), the Central Coast of NSW and Malaysia (2008), Canberra and Brisbane (2009), and Newcastle, Rockhampton, Auckland and Delhi (2010). It is, quite simply, conquering the world… ten minutes at a time.

In its nine year history Short Sweet has presented more than 1500 of the best ten minute plays from writers all over the world, with over 60% of those coming from Australian writers.

“Short Sweet is now the largest producer of new Australian theatre in the world and gives playwrights a chance to have their work produced internationally and is introducing Australian plays to countries across the world,” said festival director Alex Broun, who is also one of the world’s best exponents of the 10 minute format.

“In 2010 alone, Short Sweet has produced plays by Australian playwrights in five countries – Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, India and of course Australia.

Indian-Australian playwright SONAL MOORE just scooped the pool of rich prizes at the inaugural Short Sweet Delhi festival. Her play The Shadows Within won best overall production as well as the People’s Choice Award for the audience’s most popular play.

Said Short Sweet founder Mark Cleary: “During Short Sweet Delhi we saw Australian plays translated and performed in Hindi and in recent years plays from Short Sweet have also been translated into Persian and published in Iran.”

Short Sweet’s national reach is also greatly emphasized in Short Sweet Sydney 2011, with Short Sweet’s highly successful 10 minute playwrighting course inspiring writers from every state and territory to have work selected for the Festival. For example Short Sweet Sydney 2011 will feature a rich selection of Northern Territory writers as well as many plays from writers in regional areas such as Rockhampton and Newcastle.

Newly appointed S S General Manager Fiona Beattie announced that this year again, local actors and directors also have a chance to be selected for Shorter Sweeter, the professional touring arm of Short Sweet which this year completed a successful four month nationwide tour.

The full program of works for Short Sweet Theatre Sydney 2011 will be announced at the launch and published the following day.

Mulan will play in Melbourne at The Arts Centre - State Theatre from 3 to 5 February 2011 and in Sydney at the State Theatre from 10 to 13 February 2011 for a strictly limited season.

Originating from a traditional Chinese myth, the family-friendly acrobatic show, Mulan tells the story about a young girl named Hua Mulan who brings honor to her family by becoming a warrior and enters a glorifying war against the bandits. The story of Hua Mulan was adapted as a major Walt Disney animated feature film in 1998, delighting families around the world. This heartwarming story is told by an extraordinary visiting troupe of performers the Chongqing Acrobatic Art Troupe of China through acrobatics, dances, and artistic stage designs.

The visually spectacular show is ideal for families, Mulan features thirty five performers, with the youngest being twelve years old and has made an outstanding breakthrough in acrobatic techniques, with incredible displays of Silk Trapeze, Meteriors and Hoop Diving. A team of professional martial arts performers have been incorporated into the show so that audiences can enjoy high-level martial techniques and adventurous scenes, which bring about a unique and breathtaking visual experience.

Mulan is divided into five acts, which each exhibit unique and magnificent physical skills. The Festival uses the incredible displays of balancing and foot juggling. The Army Recruitment exhibits masculine power and prowess and features the incredible treading on drums act. The Fight against Bandits simulates a war scene and includes hoop diving. Head over Heels in Love uses fluid acrobatic skills such as Shadow Puppet Plays and the dazzling Silk Trapeze to create romance. The Triumph is the final celebration and includes the amazing Meterior and Play Dooly acts both of which include demonstrations of human bodies defying gravity as the troupe perform amazing airborne talents to the sounds of the roaring drums and resounding horns.

Chongqing Acrobatic Art Troupe has received many international and domestic awards for its wonderful programmes. One of their many awards includes the Splendour Award (for professional theatrical artworks). Chongqing Acrobatic Art Troupe has performed in over eighty countries and more than four hundred cities. The series has been put together by casting professionals for actors. We all recognise that there is a need for a genuine series of workshops so that emerging Australian actors can work with the American & Canadian decision makers. Actors will get honest feedback about their performance. There are no promises of employment, representation or visas. As any agent of repute knows, if a studio wishes to employ an International actor, they will get the paperwork done.

The aim of the workshop series is simple – ‘to introduce actors to the leading casting directors and network casting executives from Los Angeles, New York and Canada in Sydney, Australia. The team of casting professionals who will be teaching are listed below. As you will see, they are not associates or assistants; they are Casting Directors with substantial credits, experience and reputation. Many of them do not teach workshops. They have agreed to teach this series as they have cast Australian actors and respect the work ethic Australian professionals possess. The casting directors are being remunerated for their time as they are teaching. These are not paid ‘go-sees’, but they have all given up Thanksgiving with their families to come to see you, so they are dedicated to this project.

Actors interested in taking a class or a series of classes should enrol online. No bookings will be taken over the phone or in person. The online system counts down, so enrolment by any other means could cause over-enrolment. Receipts are issued immediately from the website and should be brought with you on the day of your class.

Classes are limited to 16 per class.

Private lessons are available with some of the casting directors.

The official website for this project is www.aipapaws.com.au

Please ask any questions you may have before enrolling. Sides will be supplied by the casting directors and will be emailed to you prior to your workshop. You will also receive a tax invoice for your classes.

Mos Def began his music career, forming the short-lived group Urban Thermo Dynamics (UTD) with his younger brother DCQ and his younger sister Ces. Signed to Payday Records, the group only released two singles but in 1996, Def emerged as a solo artist, working with De La Soul and Da Bush Babees before releasing his own first single, “Universal Magnetic” which was a huge underground hit. After signing with Rawkus Records, he and Talib Kweli released a full length album under the band name Black Star.

As a solo artist he has released the albums ‘Black on Both Sides’ in 1999, ‘The New Danger’ in 2004, ‘True Magic’ in 2006 and ‘The Ecstatic’ in 2009. In recent news, for his next album, Def has just signed on with Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music imprint. (Via Consequence of Sound.) West and Mos have collaborated several times, most recently on the G.O.O.D. Friday track "Lord Lord Lord". Mos has taken on something of a spiritual adviser role for Kanye as of late -- in a recent Tweet about his "Power" remix verse Kanye wrote, "Mos helped me find the 'old me' lyrically."

Initially recognized for his musical output, Mos Def’s screen work since the early 2000s has established him as one of only a handful of rappers who have garnered critical approval for their acting work. Brown Sugar, Monster’s Ball, The Italian Job, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the HBO made-for-TV film Something The Lord Made have been particularly acclaimed by critics.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT
Returns for a very special solo evening at the
Sydney Opera House

“One of the most talented singer-songwriters of his generation.”
Bernard Zuel, Sydney Morning Herald

Fans of wonderfully intimate music take note: the one and only Rufus Wainwright is returning to the Sydney Opera House for one very special evening featuring our prodigious wunderkind in solo piano and vocal mode.

The evening in question is Thursday October 14, 2010 at the Concert Hall within the Sydney Opera House.

As supporters of Rufus will know, this concert is a special thank you to his loyal and understanding Australian fans who had bought tickets expecting to see Rufus perform solo in February 2010 at Sydney’s Verbrugghen Hall.

That show and surrounding performances were regrettably cancelled due to a family illness earlier this year, but Rufus made a promise to return to Australia later in 2010.

The passing away of his mother and “greatest admirer and critic”, legendary folksinger Kate McGarrigle, in January this year, and the enduring admiration for his sister, folk-rocker Martha Wainwright, are themes that pervade much of Rufus Wainwright's breathtaking sixth studio album: All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu.

This is an album steeped in beauty, with hugely personal and deeply emotional songs, each channeled through Wainwright via only his fingers, voice and piano. A perfect precursor then for this hugely anticipated Australian solo concert and upcoming tour.

“The greatest songwriter on the planet.”
Elton John

“Rufus stands next to Nina Simone.”
Michael Stipe

Of his latest offering to fans, Rufus said “Though it may appear at the outset that my new album and show are quite dark, don't be alarmed, I'm no fool and will always make sure to ensure a well rounded evening: be prepared to laugh as well as cry your little eyes out.”

Reactions from fans and critics alike have been universally positive.

About All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, Q Magazine has said, “It’s a flabbergasting, intense album that demands intense listening.” While All Music Guide agreed the record is “a bold, absolutely emotionally naked statement that retains Wainwright’s devastating talent for artful, universally compelling songcraft.”

Do not delay in securing your tickets for this very special concert. As we said earlier this year – if the 2008 Rufus Wainwright Australian tour is anything to go by – his return in 2010 will no doubt be the absolute musical highlight of your calendar year!

Barrelhouse
Announce Brand New Single No Hope
& Accompanying National Tour

Many young bands claim the ‘road warriors’ title but very few can hold such a claim up to the light the way Port Macquarie based blues / rock / roots 3 piece Barrelhouse can. Including support slots for the likes of Ani DiFranco, Blue King Brown, Jeff Lang, Mama Kin and Ash Grunwald, from east coast to west coast the last two years alone has seen the band play over 200 shows.

The Barrelhouse story begins in late 2008. The band sent a self confessed “crappy demo” into triple J. Roots n All started spinning it and within weeks the band was handpicked by the station as their ‘unearthed’ act to open the main stage of Coffs Harbour’s Open Arms Festival ( w’Grinspoon, Gyroscope, Mammal, TZU and many more).

Strong Triple J airplay around the unearthed win sent them to the top of the Triple J Unearthed ‘roots’ charts which, combined with a swift rising reputation on the North Coast live scene, led straight into a slots at Festival Of The Sun (Port Macquarie) and the East Coast Blues n Roots festival (Byron Bay). The ever increasing attention also saw the band sign with management company ‘Cross Section’, run by co directors Scott Mesiti (Director of Festival Of The Sun) and Ted Gardiner (manager of ‘The Brian Jonestown Massacre’).

Just surfaced from 301 studio’s in Byron Bay, the band are now proud to present No Hope, the first single to be lifted from their forthcoming debut album “Species Vagabond”, which is due for release early 2011.

Says front-man Dwayne Cameron:

“Species Vagabond covers all of the usual topics; lost love, lust, hopelessness, travelling, sticking it to the man and not having enough money. ‘No Hope’ was actually the last song we wrote for the album and didn’t really finish it till we got to the studio. It’s about being in the music industry and the feeling of hopelessness you get when you think of how long and hard you have worked towards your goal, how many sacrifices you have made, and yet in the eyes of a lot of people you are still considered a bum for not having a “real Job”

The truth is though, it's these people's comments that drive us harder. We actually have the best job in the world, travelling, festivals, meeting different people and not having any dreams in life because we're living them."

In true Barrelhouse Style the band have announced an absolute mammoth No Hope single launch tour that will see them criss cross the entire country right up into January @:

BEN HUR – The Stadium Spectacular

October 9th 2010 01:09
BEN HUR – The Stadium Spectacular

The biggest theatrical event ever seen in Australia
“Ben Hur sets the stadium alight” – Pelerin, France

“Biblical in scale” – London Daily Mail

Direct from Europe, BEN HUR – The Stadium Spectacular, a world tour premiere, will perform exclusively in Sydney at ANZ Stadium for two nights only on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 October, 2010.

BEN HUR brings to life the classic tale made famous by the eleven time Academy Award winning 1959 Hollywood movie “Ben Hur” starring Charlton Heston. BEN HUR combines the scale of the Sydney Olympic Games Opening Ceremony with the drama of the galley slave who dared defy the powerful Roman Empire.

This monumental $15 million stadium adaptation has been crafted by renowned French director Robert Hossein and produced by STADEFRANCE Live Events. The performance features a live chariot race with 32 horses, a giant Roman Galleon, a parade of Roman legionnaires and a 15,000 square metre specially constructed arena that will transform ANZ Stadium into the biggest Roman Amphitheatre ever seen.

BEN HUR’s first stadium performance was in 2006 at the Stade de France, Paris where the spectacular event played to over 300,000 people. The production, with its cast of 225, its horses, its amazing scenic elements and its added attraction of mass audience participation for young and old alike received overwhelming critical acclaim.

BEN HUR – The Stadium Spectacular was adapted from the 1880 novel “BEN HUR: A Tale of the Christ” by American author and Civil War General Lew Wallace. The enduring story which tells of the slave Ben Hur, and his triumphs over his Roman persecutors, has inspired two epic movies (both a colour and black and white) and even a musical on Broadway.

The Stadium Spectacular is created by legendary French director Robert Hossein. No stranger to large-scale productions, Hossein’s BEN HUR is theatre unlike anything playing in the world today. Particularly known for his giant shows and historic stagings, Robert Hossein notched up a Guinness Book record entry in 1983-84 when 700,000 people saw his show “A Man Named Jesus”.

Australian audiences can register their interest at the official tour website. Those registered will receive BEN HUR – The Stadium Spectacular tour news and a priority period to purchase tickets before public sales.

Visa Credit, Debit or Prepaid cardholders can exclusively gain access to presale tickets through Visa Entertainment. Advanced tickets across all seating categories will be available from 9am (local time) Monday 08 March to 5pm (local time) Wednesday 10 March, or until tickets sell out at www.visaentertainment.com.au.

BEN HUR promises to be an outstanding and unforgettable performance not to be missed. BEN HUR is the must-see major event of 2010.

“An epic spectacular, extraordinary” – Le Monde

Paris became Hollywood!” – TVEnvie
