MADDY HAY
SMOKE IN THE CITY
Release date: September 16th 2010
Maddy Hay’s stunning debut album, Smoke in the City, already released to great acclaim in Europe, will be available in Australia from September 16. Fourteen rich and sultry songs are delivered in Maddy’s beautiful jazz tinged voice accompanied by lush string arrangements, piano accordion and a touch of the childlike glockenspiel. Her imaginative and unique compositions have both depth and vulnerability and spring from a great musicality, whilst melding genres from the past and present.
“As an infant I could hum before I could speak. I grew up listening to opera and classical jazz while dozing under my mother’s easel as she painted. I began violin lessons at the age of five and if I had behaved badly and was sent to my room, I would recline on my bed with my legs crossed and play boisterously until I was allowed out again.”
In a reverse of the normal career path for Australian artists, Smoke In The City was first released in Europe in 2009 where Maddy is signed to the legendary Sony / Columbia Records, and EMI Music Publishing and received considerable critical and popular success; including being play listed on radio 1 and radio 2.
Maddy wrote Smoke in The City when she was just 16, and at boarding school.
“I would spend every minute I had hidden away in a tiny dark room in the music building, escaping from life, to my preferred imaginary world. For me, at that stage, the song was about waiting to share my music with the world. And today it brings me great joy to be able to sing that, in front of a live audience.”
The album’s title track was one of three finalists in the International John Lennon Songwriting Contest. It also won the Kool Skool Awards winner of Best Original Jazz Composition in 2007, was a finalist in the 2005 National Musicoz Awards, and was shortlisted in the 2008 Australian Songwriting Contest and 2009 Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition.
The album was recorded in 2009 and produced by bass player Jonathan Zion, who has worked with artists such as Pete Murray and Ian Moss. On tour in the Netherlands with Pete Murray, Jonathan placed two tracks into the hands of Sony Netherlands Dave Toethuis, who fell in love with the music and Maddy’s career moved swiftly forward.
Now it is Australian music lovers turn. Maddy Hay will launch Smoke In The City at Toff in Town, Melbourne on September 16.
