MEN ALOUD
Welsh choral group Men Aloud was formed in 2000 and has had a wide and varied amount of success in their few short years. In 2003 they won the Male Choir category in the inaugural year of S4C’s Cor Cymri, Wale’s national televised choir competition.
In October of 2008 they shot to stardom after winning the UK’s largest ever choir competition to date, “Last Choir Standing”. Soon after they recorded their debut album over five days at AIR Studios in London and achieved gold status within the first week of sales.
10 Sept 2010 – CD DVD Launch
18 Sept 2010 – STVDIO Broadcast – Premiere
Not surprisingly, it went on to sell over a quarter of a million albums within the UK. MA appears regularly on network radio and television. Some broadcast highlights including the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium, Radio Three Choir of the Year from the Royal Festival Hall and a performance on HMS Belfast for the BBC One New Years Eve Festival.
With two critically acclaimed sold out United Kingdom tours, a special performance for Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace, and a tour of the US planned for February next year, MA are eagerly looking forward to the international release of their live debut on CD and DVD with Men Aloud: Live from Wales.
Fresh from a hugely popular second UK tour, Men Aloud, a 20 man choir of Wales’ best voices are set to release their much anticipated, first-ever concert video, Men Aloud: Live from Wales on CD and DVD released by Denon Records and marketed by Universal Music in Australia. In stores from September 10, 2010, the 70 minute concert is also geared to air nationally on STVDIO in Australia this September 18 at 8:30pm. There will be subsequent broadcasts on STVDIO and also on Ovation in November.
Men Aloud’s live CD and DVD broadcast are produced in association with the BBC and filmed in the famous Wales Millennium Centre. The concert features a host of special guest performances by opera star Bryn Terfel, leading man of London’s West End and Broadway John Owens and international pop icon Bonnie Tyler.
Men Aloud have taken the UK by storm introducing thousands of fans to the centuries-old Welsh Choir tradition after being crowned “The Nation’s Favourite Choir” in 2008. The success of their outstanding victory on BBC1’s “Last Choir Standing”; platinum debut album “Only Men Aloud!”; and follow up album “Band of Brothers” awarded Classical Brit “Album of the Year”; has seen the group go stellar in the UK, and gained international recognition with a planned tour of the US in the mix for February next year.
Men Aloud’s musical director Tim Rhys-Evans brought the group together ten years ago. A classically trained singer and former musical director of the Welsh National Youth Opera; Rhys-Evans has shaped the progressive choir to push boundaries in classical music with exciting results.
“This concert is all about our home and the tradition I am so deeply passionate about - the Welsh male choir,” says Rhys-Evans. “From the very beginning our main aim has been to encourage and promote the old and much loved tradition of Welsh male vocal singing to younger audiences. Younger audiences can be introduced to this centuries-old tradition through the reworking of contemporary pop hits into a unique choir experience.”
“We’re so excited the concert will be reaching Australian shores for the first time – with the CD, DVD release and show being aired in September. And we really hope to be visiting soon!” he says.
Men Aloud have rocketed onto the classical scene with their unique repertoire of tracks that range from 17th Century classics to present day pop hits creating their own unique musical genre.
They are renowned for varied and progressive interpretations of songs not normally associated with all male choir groups. The men harmonise covers of contemporary hits from Tom Jones and Simon & Garfunkel to Broadway favourites from Porgy and Bless and Funny Girl.
