Adelaide Festival Centre's trans:mission program presents
MGT
Austrian innovator Wolfgang Muthspiel, Australia's own Slava Grigoryan and US legend Ralph Towner come together to form guitar trio MGT, which will perform on 20 August at Her Majesty's Theatre. The performance is part of a national tour celebrating their debut CD release From a Dream, following their time here at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival in 2007. They previously toured Australia in 2005.
"Our first CD as a group From a Dream really highlights and celebrates our individual musical influences which is rich in displaying our own artistry within a trio format. We aimed to create a truly new ensemble 'voice' in the guitar world," says Grigoryan.
As MGT, Muthspiel, Grigoryan and Towner are intent on expanding the guitar repertoire. All are classically trained while varying in age and heritage and leading vividly different forays into world, jazz, and modern classical music. Forming MGT three years ago has been a dream come true for these accomplished individual performers and their world-wide fans alike.
Wolfgang Muthspiel is an internationally acclaimed guitarist/composer, and commands attention worldwide as an artist of deep integrity, intelligence and daring musicality. He takes solo performances to a new level, incorporating sophisticated electronic loops, samples and other sound sources with his instruments. European Jazz prize winner for 2003, Wolfgang Muthspiel is one of the most exciting artists on the jazz and classical scene today. His onstage improvisations are said to be "miracles of intensity."
Slava Grigoryan is well known to Australian audiences as an extraordinary classical guitarist. After a very successful involvement in the 2007 Adelaide International Guitar Festival, he will also be involved in 2008. Slava's performances in Australia include solo, duos and album releases with his brother Leonard and concertos with chamber and symphony orchestras. Slava is also a member of Saffire (The Australian Guitar Quartet). He continues to tour internationally across Europe, North America, Asia, the Middle East, and his home continent of Australia.
Ralph Towner has a distinguished career that stretches back more than 30 years as an internationally acclaimed 12 string and classical guitarist. He also plays piano, synthesizer, percussion and trumpet and has made notable recordings of jazz, classical music, folk music, and world music. Best known as the lead composer, guitarist, and keyboardist for the acoustic jazz ensemble "Oregon", Towner has also had a rich and varied solo career that has seen him collaborate with such great modern musicians as Gary Burton, John Abercrombie and Jan Garbarek. He was even honoured by Apollo astronauts who carried his music on cassette to the moon, officially naming moon craters after his compositions Icarus and Ghost Beads.
MGT will perform solo, duo and trio sets with pre-composed material, spontaneous composition and improvised mastery.
