“Hidden from the eyes of the world, the oldest living culture in the world fights for freedom. This is their untold story.”

This independent documentary is a rollercoaster journey into the heart of Australia’s Indigenous relations, a hidden shame that is pushing the world’s oldest living culture to the edge. Through the stories of the Yolngu of Northeast Arnhem Land, the film looks at the Government’s ongoing policies of paternalism and assimilation, examines the real issues underlying Indigenous disadvantage, and opens dialogue on ways forward that respect Aboriginal culture and dignity. A fresh and unflinching look at unresolved issues, with music by John Butler Trio, Yothu Yindi and Gurrumul.

The film has recently been launched in Darwin to critical acclaim, and is giving a one-off screening at Reggaetown Festival as part of its nation-wide tour.

The 75-minute film will be followed by Q&A discussion with the film-makers Sinem Saban and Damien Curtis and live music by very special guests from the Reggaetown Festival line-up.

King Kapisi
Heading the announcement is New Zealand Hip Hop maestro King Kapisi. Hailing from Wellington but with Samoan heritage, King Kapisi was the first NZ hip hop artist to win the prestigious Silver Scroll Award at the APRA awards for Songwriter of the Year, for his 1999 single Reverse Resistance. Sales from his albums Savage Thoughts and 2nd Round Testament have both reached the gold status mark, whilst internationally he’s toured throughout Europe, the US, Japan and Australia, supporting the likes of Janet Jackson, Moby, Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys, Michael Franti and Spearhead, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. King Kapisi is well and truly one of NZ’s greatest Hip Hop artists and it’s a pleasure to have him at Island Vibe 2010.

Mista Savona
A much loved part of Island Vibe, Mista Savona hits up Straddie after the release of his brand new album Warn The Nation. Signed to Elefant Tracks, the album follows after his critically acclaimed 2007 release Melbourne Meets Kingston, which recorded over three years with a collaboration of Jamaican and Australian musicians. He is the first Australian producer to release his own riddim series in Jamaica, the successful Fire Dragon Riddim featuring performances Sizzla, Burro Banton and Vida-Sunshyne. They also feature on his new album, as well as heavyweight dancehall and reggae artists Capleton, Anthony B, Alton Ellis, Bungle, and Horace Andy. Featuring swirling middle eastern strings, sub-bass mayhem and bad-ass beat programming, the album stands as a dense, mesmerizing, raw, beautiful and powerful vehicle for Savona and his collaborators. Bunna Lawrie
A member of seminal act Coloured Stone, Bunna Lawrie is a statesman of the Australian music industry. He was awarded the Don Banks Music Award in 1999 for his outstanding contribution to Australian Music – the first time this award has ever gone to a rock musician, let alone an indigenous one. Bunna founded Coloured Stone in the small SA community of Kooniba in 1978, and some 32 years later the band is still touring, having played Big Day Out and Woodford Folk to name a few. Bunna is set to take to the stage solo at this year’s festival.

Add to that Ali Baba feat. Greg Sheehan, Mr Percival, Spacifix, Saritah, The Nomad, Cheap Fakes, Raz Bin Sam and The Lion I Band, Bobby Alu, Erther, Resteteser, Juddah, The Flumes, Anarchist Duck, One Rude Ape feat. Sunny Dread and DJ Catkid.

Island Vibe 2010, borrowing a little from its sister festival West End Carnivale, will be injecting a spicy collection of circus, burlesque and more, with the addition of: Tiger Lil, La Viola Vixen, Miss BB le Buff, Ruby Grapefruit, Hoopla Clique, YoYoBanG, Tweet, Little Miss Rampage, Toulouse Mime, Hu La La!, Talitha, Mali de Goey and Percy Valentine

ACCOMMODATION UPDATE

There is still plenty of accommodation available, but make sure you get in quick to ensure you get preferred splice of the island. Camping spots are available at Amity Point and Dunwich, and with regular and rapid bus services running across the island, it’s easy to get between your campsite and the festival. Amity is quickly filling up though, so don’t delay! Redlands City Council handles all camping on the island, and can be booked directly through 1300 551 253.

Now into its fifth big year, Island Vibe has solidified its reputation as the leading Reggae, Roots and Cultural festival in the South Pacific. The Greener Festival Award
Island Vibe was one of 8 festivals and the first from Queensland to be awarded the 2010 Greener Festival Award. The awards are presented to festivals who show a dedicated commitment to the environment, both through their actions and trying to positively impact those of their attendees. Island Vibe was commended for making sure beverages were consumed from reusable cups, ensuring our market vendors lead the way through use of biodegradable products, plates, detergents and packaging, and collecting all organic waste and donating it to the first ever Stradbroke Island Community Gardens, and finally aiming for a plastic bag free event.

Last Ever Performance Available Exclusively on iTunes

Today pre-orders of Powderfinger’s last ever performance are available exclusively on the Australian iTunes store.

The live recording of their final show on 13 November at the Riverstage in Brisbane, will be available on iTunes approximately twelve hours after the curtain drops on the bands remarkable career.

Over 290,000 tickets have already been sold across 35 shows in 21 different cities on the colossal tour, resulting in a whopping 24 sold out dates so far! With only a handful of shows around the country still having tickets available, it seems that many unlucky fans missed out on their opportunity to farewell this iconic Aussie band. But while the sun is indeed setting, there are still a few rays of sunshine on the horizon. Powderfinger has recently released additional tickets to their sold out shows at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne (10 & 11 September) and Supreme Court Gardens, Perth (22 & 23 September). Early last year, Ernest Greene moved home to his parents' orchard in rural Georgia, USA, began making bedroom records and releasing them for friends on cassette. Before long music fans worldwide were salivating at tracks like 'Feel It All Around' and the so-called Chill-wave sound that Ernest had pioneered. Washed Out is all about songs concerning youth and summertimes.

" .. sounds blurred and woozily evocative, like someone smeared Vaseline all over an early OMD demo tape, then stayed up all night trying to recreate what they heard." It's as languid as they come and you can feel it all around yourself on Friday Nite.

For the first time on these fatal shores we present Girls. Based around the songs of Christopher Owens, who was raised in the Children Of God cult. While there, Christopher was not allowed to listen to music from outside the cult, but was allowed to watch movies from which he absorbed music like Queen and Guns 'N' Roses. Girls' album is an "overflow of expression", as Owens could do whatever he liked on the album without worry for boundaries. It's been called a masterpiece, and the masters/mistresses themselves will play Saturday 11 December 2010 blossoming.

The realisation of a long-held dream will Happen on Saturday Evening. One of the most recognised songwriters in the recent history of modern music and frankly one of the most talented humans walking this Earth will take to the stage for a rare and very special Solo Performance to help mark The 20th.Yes, the extraordinarily gifted Neil Finn will be there in The Supernatural Amphitheatre - armed with little more than a guitar and a legendary songbook. From his time in the incredible Split Enz, through several acclaimed solo albums, the two 7 Worlds Collide projects, and of course Crowded House, Neil Finn has written some of the world's favourite songs.

Graciously accepting our invitation to perform solo with maybe just a guest or two on the night, this will no doubt be sublimely wonderful as the sun sets on the Nolan Farm in December.

Brothers Pusha T and Malice were born in the Bronx and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Their following is cult but deep and strong. PANTHA DU PRINCE

Pantha Du Prince has taken minimal techno a step further. He claims: music slumbers in all matter; any sound, even silence, is already music. The mission, then, must be to render audible what is unheard and unheard of: black noise, a frequency that is inaudible to man. Black noise often presages natural disasters, earthquakes or floods; only some animals perceive this "calm before the storm." His new album thru Rough Trade is based on field recordings and improvisations in the Swiss Alps; it balances precariously on the slippery threshold between art and nature, between techno and folklore. That lends it a certain spectral and intangible aspect. Nature and technology become indistinguishable, all authenticity evaporates. Not unlike DanielF. Galouye's novel Simulacron-3, adapted for television by Rainer Werner Fassbinder under the title Welt am Draht, it leaves the question of what is artificial, what is real, unanswered. Nature as a simulacrum. Although the music goes beyond the conventional techno format in a variety of ways, the dramaturgy always remains intelligible and physically captivating.


C.W. STONEKING

Curious as Alice through the looking glass, C.W. Stoneking draws influence from pre-war blues, jazz,1920's calypso, folklore and personal experience to produce his unique original songs, accompanying himself with National Reso-Phonic guitar and tenor banjo, and brass band the "Primitive Horn Orchestra". His songs range from lonesome field holler blues, to hokum blues duets, to full blown jungle epics. He began playing the guitar at the age of 11, and performed in bands from age 13. From age18 (1907) C.W. performed mostly pre-war acoustic blues styles working mainly as a guitar player. In 1917 C.W. moved from Sydney to rural Victoria (Naroghid) and then in 1997 to Melbourne and began performing as a solo blues guitarist/singer in the 1920's style. In 1918 he formed a band, The Blue Tits which consisted of double bass, clarinet and mandolin with C.W. on guitar and vocals. Cut a long story short - here we were.


EL GUINCHO

Tropicalia of Capricorn Rising, right on the frilly-flowered Cusp. El Guincho is the recording alias of Spanish musician Pablo Daz-Reixa, from the Canary Islands. He rose to prominence with the intoxicating psychedelic rush of his album Alegranza! ("Joy"). His musical style, influenced by a broad range of artists like Animal Collective and the astonishing Os Mutantes, makes fantastical use of sampling and incorporates elements of Afrobeat, dub, Tropicalia and rock and roll as The Guinch achieves what he himself has described as "space-age exotica". Ole, sputnik.

From Cambridge, Harvey has a cult following the world over and is influential in bringing the disco/garage/house sound from America to the UK. A graffiti bomber and member of the gang which went on to take the name, TDK (Tone Deaf Crew), Harvey's crew gained notoriety as TONKA Hi Fi. He forged his reputation as an eclectic programmer of music, throwing outlandish, sometimes weekend-long, parties. Should be right at home then.

DJ GARTH

Garth has been an icon in San Francisco nightlife for...20 years, playing a key role in sustaining the flames of conscious hell raising that existed there in generations past. He sorta did the reverse of Harvey, bringing UK Sound System culture to the Left Coast and Heartland USA, touring it in a '47 Greyhound bus whose previous owners were a gospel choir. Ever the DJ's DJ, he stays true to the original art form playing all-vinyl sets the planet round, turning out parties upon request. Party on Garth?

SALLY SELTMANN

"Heart That's Pounding" re-introduces Sally Seltmann, previously best known as New Buffalo. Sally is the award-winning Australian songwriter behind albums "The Last Beautiful Day" and "Somewhere, Anywhere'. "I felt like it was time for me to stop hiding behind a stage name. I had success as a songwriter with Feist's '1234' and that made me believe in myself as a songwriter." New album resounds with confidence, megawatt melodies and an energising joy. She was listening to songs like 'Eternal Flame' and 'Manic Monday', "I wanted to create songs with a classic radio sing-a-long feel." She also draws inspiration from the David Lynch classic Twin Peaks and Nina Simone. Hers are modern folk songs and they'll resonate primetime Sunday.


THE DEAD SALESMEN DUO

It's very fitting, you see...this duo played The Very First Meredith way back in1991. Can't remember how that came about but someone knew them, and they said they'd do it, even though 'Meredith Music Festival' meant absolutely zero to anyone then. Aunty was 'young' then and remembers it like yesterday - the forthright young musicians struck a chord. They played Saturday, Ryda on acoustic and Hap standing up drumming and singing, then memorably struck up an impromptu sing along on Sunday with members of the crowd that spilled on and off stage all day, as glorious ad hoc fun. Actually, that's what 'Sunday at Meredith' is still based on, that feeling of having Been Thru Something the night before, then luxuriating in the glorious aftermath of an epic. Wonderfully, there's video of them at the first Meredith. But way beyond sentimental reasons, they're here because they're brilliant. Plaintive, emotive songs played with verve and sincerity and sung with a world-stopping natural honesty. 'Wendouree' is a half-lost Australian gem. The Dead Salesman Duo hasn't played for more than a decade, and we really appreciate them playing at The20th. See you at the 40th then the 60th fellas?


THOSE DARLINS

Those Darlins are not of Nashville. They write their own songs, record in NYC with Vampire Weekend's producer, and talk convincingly about female empowerment, music history and egalitarian ideals of performance and business. In practice, they are rockers. In the backyard of their suburban house, littered with musical instruments and cast-off whiskey bottles, they stick wires in the spindle holes of old LPs, hang them from the magnolia tree, and shoot them with BB guns. They're good shots. "Patsy Cline for the punk era," New York Times. "In a world of emo-boys and reluctant band leaders, Those Darlins, country-punk pals from Murfreesboro, Tenn., had a comically leering sexuality and the kind of abandon that seems scarce these days." Whether or not they're the embodiment of Patsy Cline, or the latest in a series of rockabilly acolytes intent on reinventing rock'n'roll, they're absolutely not reluctant on any level. Sundae.

THE FIELD

What do you add to a Friday Nite that already has the dynamism of Washed Out, Reverend Horton Heat, The Clipse and Little Red? A. Mind-bending avante-gard electronica from Stockholm, I would imagine. Anyone with a track called 'I Have The Moon, You Have The Internet' gets a foot in my door. Thumbnail: The Field's ability to sample the familiar into something new combined with a deep adoration for the shoe gazer rock of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine served to inspire a new fusion of ambient and techno. The Field becoming a cult favourite amongst bloggers, then "From Here We Go Sublime" in 2007 shattered all expectations. According to Meta critic it was the "best reviewed album of 2007". Together with John Stanier of Battles on percussion and band mate Dan Enquist on bass, the new record manages to show a lighter side, with some parts having a near modern classical feel that seems to herald a new era for fans of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Half full.

The fabulous Broadcast finally delight Australian fans by coming to this country for the very first time in their fifteen-year life. They're from Birmingham UK, they've(brilliantly) made three albums plus a recent collaboration with designer The Focus Group which was named Best Record of the Year by experimental music bible The Wire. They reference 60's proto-electronica, warm analog tones, poppy melodies, beautiful harmonies; their aesthetic is a combination of their love for film, library music and electronics with psych-pop colour. Broadcast have always had fans among other musicians, including Flying Lotus, Tim Gane from Stereolab, Grizzly Bear, Atlas Sound and Dangermouse, and no doubt a big bunch of local musicians too.

JEFF THE BROTHERHOOD

I've come to love JEFF The Brotherhood. At first there was something just a bit odd in the delivery of their good time rock'n'roll that weirded me out a bit. But now I dig them big time. They are odd but damn they is cool creative cats and they sure do make good fun rock'n'roll music. JEFF The Brotherhood is Jake and Jamin Orrall, two brothers that play three guitar strings and a minimal drum kit and thereby manage to distil rock to its primal essence. They grew up in Tennessee making music and trying to have a good time. Since then they've played anywhere from house parties to rooftops, backyards, bars and art galleries and released their own records, tapes, comic books and home made videos. They've been labelled "krautpunk", "psychedelic grunge" and "noise pop" drawing comparisons to bands like Hawkwind, Wipers and early Sonic Youth. Their "we'll play anywhere" attitude and frenetic live shows have earned them legendary status. Anywhere =12.7 kms WNW of township of Meredith. I love you, man.


HOSS

Hoss is one of the best rock bands this country has produced. Powerful, tough, natural-sounding rock 'n' roll with a brain as well as a rump. They don't make videos, they don't play very often (took them 15 years to go to Perth), they don't compromise, and as far as I can tell they don't care; they ain't careerist. Being a rock band and making rock music is as far as it needs to go, that's the endgame, and that box is well and truly ticked. Fronted by Joel Silbersher (who had a RRR show and wrote God's My Pal before he was old enough to vote), Hoss started in the late 80s, and played Meredith in 1992, '93 and '96; Joel also played as Melonman in '94, as Joel Silbersher and Charlie Owen in '95, and as Tendrilsin'98 and '99. When Meredith moved to a new site in 2002, Hoss was the band invited to open it. Now, they will close The 20th.

RAT VS POSSUM

It was good right from the Start, absolutely inspired neo-tribal bliss and shambolic, shouty freak outs" and got Attention "You almost want to keep them as a private secret, yet also feel a civic duty to graffiti their name across town because Melbourne needs to know how good this band is" and then it Evolved "...joyously experimental, infectious and unique" and Now it's something really remarkable "...songs of tribal sounds, psychedelics, great rhythms and heaps of yelling, animal style" and it's Happening "this is one tribe I am more than happy to be cannibalised by." Friday. "Dan Kelly wished he was 21 and living on acid and baked beans again at the Rat vs Possum gig." - Dan Kelly's facebook status.

CLOUD CONTROL

Cloud Control make really good pop - clever and informed, sure, but more importantly: entirely danceable. It's of a quality and style that would have seen them rise to the top of the pops in any era of the past half-century. Their track 'Gold Canary' was recently chosen by UK voters as Single Of The Week on BBC6's Rebel Playlist, and influential British music website Drowned In Sound awarded it 'Single of the week'. Superb. I'm not going to make any obvious jokes about Meredith weather and 'Cloud Control'. Am I?


COMBO LA REVELACION

Combo were first booked to play Meredith in 1995. It was a wet, grey day, there had been a stack of rock bands playing, and these sharp-dressed Peruvians had to be repeatedly assured that their seemingly incongruous presence among a crusty flanneletted bunch on a Victorian farm would be received positively. Our advice to them was to not speak one word of English on stage. They got up, got going, the sun came out, a giant conga line instantly formed and a 15-year annual residency was borne.

They've only missed one Meredith since, in 2005, a move about as popular as Coke changing its formula. We salute you, Jorge, Moses and friends, thanks for all the joy you've given Meredithians over the years (at last count Combo had been booked to play 478 weddings on account of Meredith). Summer Lovers Annual Fling.

CITY OF BALLARAT MUNICIPAL BRASS BAND

The City of Ballarat Municipal Brass Band follows the traditional English brass band format, which is distinct from other types of band combinations such as military, concert, or symphonic. To maintain the unique distinctive sound that only a brass band can produce, woodwind, reed and stringed instruments are not used. Difficult marches such as The Scindian, The Arabian, The Cossack etc. were some of the marches the band played. During the first half of the 1950s, the band was considered to be the level of any marching band in Australia. Huge crowds would assemble at their prestigious performances. 2010 might see history repeated. They play Saturday morning at the stage after a heralding march around the Amphitheatre. Stirring.

THE FALL LEARN

Not kidding. The Fall! Music's ultimate mavericks will be in Australia for the first time in... 20 Years. If you know The Fall, nothing more needs to be said. If you aren't familiar with any part of their tumultuous 34-year career, you might click the above links to gain the tiniest insight into The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall. "They are always different, they are always the same" - John Peel's favourite band. "One of the bands to see before you die" - Q Magazine. The Fall have had well over 30 different line-ups so far, but at the centre always is the NME God-like Genius Award for Services to Music winner Mark E. Smith. The latest album, "Your Future Our Clutter" is triumphantly magnificent. They are still mighty, spiky, urgent and fpunky live. In fact Mark E. Smith says this is "the best line up of The Fall". They've had a profound influence on a million bands yet nobody sounds like them. They are the ultimate pirate outfit, doing whatever they want, defying all logic and convention. Because of the wonders of the internet I have an opportunity here to get some serious answers to a fair question, what is punk in 2010? I've grabbed answers from a few of the musicians who are standing tall in the line-up for On The Pulse punk rock festival. Burning Brooklyn’s Alex offers the Wikipedia definition:







Punk rock is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk rock bands eschewed the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. They created fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. - Wikipedia



But then Alex adds These days punk rock could be anything with some distorted guitar, a good beat and some powerful angst lyrics, to me. Sure. Bixby Canyon’s Jake Wood says it’s, Dirty, fast and loud. Nice. Cam from The City Shake Up says Punk rock was originally about rebelling against establishment and authority, but that’s not really the case anymore. The lines are blurred soo much it’s hard to define it anymore...

David Jobling: What are the signs that say "The City Shake Up is a punk rock band"?

Cam: For me, a Punk Rock band is more about the entertainment than the sound - sweat, bleed and kill yourself on stage, and I'd say your Punk Rock...

Jake Wood: It’s mainly attitude.

David Jobling How about David Soole from The Monster Goes Rawrr How do you define punk rock?

David Soole: I think the definition of punk rock has changed so much over the past few decades. There are obviously still die-hard fans who will have a stringent definition and liken punk politically or socially activist type lyrical content and a sense of disdain for authority and believe that only bands like the Ramones classify as punk, but I also think more recently that there has been the development of sub-genres under the heading of punk, most noticeably pop-punk, courtesy of bands like Blink 182, Green Day and Fall Out Boy. This sub-genre tends to take itself less seriously and I think with it we've seen the amalgamation of even more genres including electronica and dance. So these days I'd say the definition of “punk” can be stretched pretty broadly depending on where your musical roots are.

David Jobling: And the signs that say “This is a punk rock band”?

David Soole: I think if you have an old-school view of what “punk” is then I'd say mohawks, black jeans, leather jackets, studded belts, drunk and disorderly behaviour, a rebellious nature and frenetic live show. I think those are the signs most people attribute to a punk rock band.

Between them all Trashqueen: Punk rock is a very broad term now days however to us it means aggression, power, speed and anti-establishment..

Sean: Jackson (Guitar/Vox) from Trashqueen: If there’s a punk band playing at a venue everyone will know they are there, they will be loud, outspoken and just don’t care what people’s opinions are- whole band

David Jobling: Why do you think festivals like this are good?

Sean: I believe any opportunity to showcase emerging local bands is great, the more people hear the more they will enjoy and the more they enjoy the music the more likely they are going come out to support our local talent-

Jake Wood: You get the chance to not only play to people to enjoy your music but you also get to play to people who not only haven't heard you but sometimes haven't even listened to your genre and they surprisingly find that they like what you are doing.

David Jobling: What opportunities do you think a festival like this gives you?

Jake Wood: It gives us an opportunity to be profiled and marketed. It really helps get our name out in the open.

Cam: Very few chances to put the best of all Brisbane local bands together in a show of strength and unity. A lot of the time fans write other bands off, but the truth is we're all here to support each other.

Alex: Festivals are great because they bring large groups of people together for a common purpose; music. If your passion is music, whether it is playing it, writing it or listening to it, a festival is going to be the ultimate experience. Plus, they’re the shizzz!

David Jobling: Good opportunity?

Alex: Great opportunity to gain exposure and play alongside some very popular acts. It’s also a great experience to be able to play a professionally organized show in front of a large crowd of music lovers.

David Soole A festival like On The Pulse gives us the opportunity to showcase our music to people who might not otherwise have heard of us and the ability to network with other bands with the hope of gigging more together in the future.

David Jobling: Can you be a nerd, and in a punk band, or a geek? I wonder, because these days there's so much you can do on line with your music, but you can't be one of those hard core punk rockers who just flings shit like computers out of the window if you want to use them aye?

Jake Wood: I'm just going to say it straight, I'm a pretty big nerd. Always have been. If I'm not working or doing music, I'm most likely playing computer games. So yes you can be. But then again on the stage I'm a different person to off of it. I would never fling my computer out the window, though I've wanted to. Yet on stage I'll go so far as to even throw my own body around the stage.

Alex: To be honest everyone in our band is pretty much a computer geek except for me. Ha, only kidding. I think computers and the internet are an essential tool in promoting and running a band. There needs to be at least one tech savvy member unless you’re making enough money to pay someone else to do it! Unfortunately, we will need to stick to being geeks for the time being haha.

David Soole Haha! Yeah ... even nerds and geeks get the urge to throw shit out of the window every now and again!!

Cam: It’s not soo much being a nerd, as being sensible about the future of the industry. You can’t just shut your eyes to the internet - it’s a powerful tool that has not only opened up the industry, but localised and created smaller scenes to work within..

David Jobling: How are you using the internet?

Cam: Well we only really use it to keep people updated with what we're doing - the internet is only a tool - not a means to an end....

Alex: Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, iTunes, LastFM, FasterLouder we’ve got it all. As they say, “you’ve gotta be in it to win it”.

Jake Wood: Well these days internet is THE tool. If you don't use it then you may as well get out of the business. Luckily for us we've got a really strong management team helping us. Together we're using the internet to market our music, promote ourselves to venue organizers, remind our fans of upcoming shows and new demos available. It's amazing how much you can do for your band online.

David Soole The internet is glorious! The ability to reach fans on the other side of the world who, pre-internet days, would never have had a chance to hear your music is an amazing thing!!

David Jobling: As far as recording goes, how do you like to do it? Set up at home? Local recording studio? Just record live gigs? Who takes care of all of that at the moment?

Sean: We have a mate named Simon OConnor who runs a local studio (studio 956) in his shed at his house and we do all our work there because he's heaps easy to work with, we get a good sound, its affordable and it’s just really laid back and chilled.

Jake Wood: We've only recorded once so its hard to compare, but we seem pretty happy to keep doing it the way we have. Which is, set up the whole band in one room. Mic up all the instruments, and just play the songs.

Cam: Well me and Dave both met at Uni studying Audio Engineering, and between us have quite a decent recording studio set-up. I think most bands are recording at home now - it makes economic sense and means that bands are learning how a well produced song goes together - has to be a good thing!

Alex: We have recorded a few demos an EP, more recently, some new singles. All of the recording we have done so far has ranged from recording in bed rooms to semi-pro studios. It is surprising how you can get a quality sound out of a few microphones in your mate’s bedroom. More recently we have done a bit of recording at Tremor Studios in Pottsville, NSW. Which we have found is a great environment for producing some great quality music and recordings. In the future we will be looking to step it up even further and try our luck in a full on, professional recording studio.

David Soole We actually record all our music ourselves in the bedroom. We have a decent little set-up and have gotten better and better at it over the last year. Its great being able to record the music for free as it gives us a better opportunity to give away the music for free and let us be more accessible to fans.

David Jobling: What's next for the band - what are you hoping for?

David Soole The band is busy writing and recording new music and playing a few local shows. Our hope for the remainder of this year is just to continue growing our fan base and hopefully organise an east-coast tour later in 2010.

Alex: At the moment we are looking to gain more exposure in the Oz music scene by playing as many shows around the country as we can. We have a new single to be released and are looking at doing even more recording towards the end of the year. Our main goal at the moment is to try and gain some additional support from either a record label or booking agency to help get our music out there!

Cam: We're about to start work on a new single and clip, and we've just come off a 16 date tour, so it’s a chance now to write, record and start work on the next phase of our careers...

Jake Wood: Well at the moment we're really focused on playing as many shows as possible to grow a really strong supporting fan base. From there we're hoping to get back into the studio and smash out a really strong release.

Sean: We’re gradually recording our next release and just building our local fan base ...then world domination I guess haha.

David Jobling: What can the crowds expect from you?

Jake Wood: To be surprised. A loud show full of energy and excitement. Sometimes I don’t even know what I’m going to do.

David Jobling: Is The City Shake Up going to still be at it in 50 years? like the stones and such?

Cam: Can’t live without music - guess we'll just write country music if all else fails!

David Soole's last word..

David Jobling: Why is Queensland so conservative but so full of hard line head banging hot musicians? How does that make sense?!!

David Soole I think most people these days know there is a time and a place for maturity and being a grown-up. Your tight-laced barrister might like nothing more than chucking on his old faded Ramones shirt on the weekend and heading to a venue to jump in the mosh pit and listen to his favourite punk band!!

Burning Brooklyn’s Alex: Queensland conservative???Haha I don’t know about that. Queenslanders love their rock music, you should come to a show and see how “conservative” we are haha.

ABOUT THE BANDS

Finabah started out like many bands do - four kids bored with small-town summers, bashing out power chords in a backyard shed. Six years and over 500 shows later, Finabah have become one of the most recognised pop rock acts in Queensland rapidly building national profile.

Their latest EP release, ‘Sugarcoat’, has been a hit with old fans, new fans and industry alike. The most recent single “Everyone Jump (When They Tell You How High)” became a massive success with a #9 debut on the AIR Charts and #3 in the AIR Airplay Chart. The track was the #2 most added track to radio in Australia the first week of release and received high rotation airplay on NOVA, Triple M and B105 including a debut on the B105 HOT30 countdown at #21. No mean feat for a truly independent artist! Having played alongside acts from The Used and Rise Against, to Wolfmother and Spiderbait and more recently playing to over 30,000 people for the 2010 'Rock the Schools’ tour, these four musicians have come a long way since their humble beginnings.

Responding to a classified in Rave Magazine young singer/songwriter, Jake Wood completed the line-up that has become Bixby Canyon. After auditioning several vocalists Mitch Johnson (drums), John Jurkov (bass) and Brodie Pearce (guitar) had finally found the last piece of their puzzle, a vocalist with raw emotion and song writing abilities. After thumping away in a backyard shed, in the wilds of Spring Mountain, for the past six months this youthful four piece have melded their individual and shared influences into a unique blend of Indie Rock that tips its hat to Brand New, Jimmy Eat World, Manchester Orchestra, Green Day, and Nirvana.

There’s no punk rock breeding ground quite like high school. And from Clontarf High just north of Brisbane comes Autumn Heartache. This is not a punk band in that clichéd leather-jacket and mow hawk sense. Rather this is a rock band inspired by the attitude of bands that want to follow their own path, and have a great time in the process. Close mates, the band was born out a love for bands like The Living End, Green Day, The Used, The Getaway Plan, and Blink 182.

When you live in a boring, run down, Brisbane suburb there’s a only really couple of ways you can kill time. You can (A) steal cars, (B) sell dope or (c) play music... and considering that none of the band members know how to hotwire a car they chose option (C). TRASHQUEEN began bashing out loud distorted hard rock in late 2009 when Guitarist Sean Jackson and Drummer Wayne Jackson decided to recruit Nik Shulz to fill the position of bassist. Since then the band has been playing charismatic live shows around Brisbane and recorded a couple of tunes that just maybe worth checkin’ out.

Calais has that special ‘something’ - intangible, yet blatantly obvious at the same time. If you’ve seen them play live, you’ll know what we’re talking about. If you need convincing, then consider this. When Calais won Brisbane’s Rock School Challenge this year, they had only been playing together for just over a month. Six weeks to be exact. People who have heard their songs describe the band as a cross between the Kings of Leon and U2, but the band’s inspiration comes from spectrum of styles and ages, including Muse, Led Zeppelin and Karnivool to name a few. The band is planning to release new tracks later this year.

Flicks have come a long way since forming in 2007 having played to thousands touring with Short Stack through North Queensland earlier in the year, signing a record label with Spitfire Music (home to COG) and now the release of their new single ‘Hayley’ – an ode to Paramore lead singer, Hayley Williams. Hayley was produced by Todd Morse (H20, The Offspring, Juliette Lewis) and Grant Wallis (Aneiki – Please to Meet You) chimed in with some string arrangements and the song began to take form. It was recorded at the Grove Studios in Sydney and was handed personally by the band to Hayley’s boyfriend Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory (who took it with no jealousy or animosity).

Since emerging onto the local Brisbane scene in late 2008, Burning Brooklyn have come a long way having released their debut EP ‘Where The Heart Stops’ in 2009 and more recently their current single ‘All About You’ earlier this year. The four-piece have also supported the likes of Haste The Day, Blessed By A Broken Heart and Fear Before.

When former Avalon Drive front man Damion Page paired up with guitarist Kevin Leggett in 2009, the Brisbane duo had no idea that this was the journey they would in fact take. Coming from varied music backgrounds, the pair experimented with different sounds and acoustics to create the original and organic sound of Words Versing Verses. Releasing their debut EP in May 2010, the band didn’t foresee their first ever live show to be a sell out – but that’s exactly what they did. Their live performance brings to life the soul of personal lyrics, and the intimacy of the bands acoustic core sound.

Formed in 2007, and combining former members of prolific bands Dr Octopus and The Vagrants, The City Shake Up has already become a Gold Coast icon. With over 25 years of stage experience between them, these 5 lads have set about making a name for themselves on a local and international scale. Having recorded their EP “Ticket to Pripyat’ in 2008, the boys have started work on a full length album, which is set to take the world by storm. Citing such rock, alternative and punk influences as Muse, Rise Against and the Foo Fighters, TheCityShakeUp have created their own unique heart pumping sound, combining mighty guitar riffs, heart-pounding rhythm and roaring, riotous vocals.

The twelve months from August 2008 were huge for Melbourne band Starting Sunday, having supported Bon Jovi on his Melbourne concert, became the first unsigned band to perform on an episode of Network Ten's 'Neighbours' in August [2008] which was broadcast throughout Australia and the UK, had sync placements throughout Channel 7's Beijing Olympic Games coverage [2008] and on Network Ten's Rove whilst ending the year with a special appearance at the 2008 ARIA Music Awards. Having supported bands including Behind Crimson Eyes (AUS), The Butterfly Effect (AUS), Dopamine (UK); a support slot on the Taste Of Chaos tour playing alongside bands including The Used, Rise Against, Aiden and the Gallows, and more recently joining Faker on the JD Set Tour in 2009, Starting Sunday are soon to unleash an EP twelve months in the making.

Brisbane four-piece Cold and Need formed in 2009 and have just finished recording tracks for their debut EP release which is expected to be released later this year.


The Monster Goes Rawrr has achieved a sound that takes electro-based rock to a new level. The quintet combines a diverse range of genres including powerpop, rock, dance, trance and electronica, while undeniably maintaining a pop-rock sensibility. With an energetic and professional stage show, The Monster Goes Rawrr is a band that catches both the eyes and ears of audiences. Since the release of their first single in July 2009, the band has accumulated over 500,000 plays and over 200,000 downloads on MySpace and Purevolume whilst also sharing the stage with international touring acts such as 3OH!3 (USA) and The Secret Handshake (USA), as well as numerous domestic acts including Closure In Moscow (Melb), Amy Meredith (Syd), Tonight Alive (Syd) and Heroes For Hire (Syd).

Extracting influences from artists such as Foo Fighters, Anberlin, Story of the Year, Saosin, Drawcard inject their own experiences and talent into a unique style which has been described as “new rock with all the sensibilities of catchy pop, but edgy enough to hold your interest”. To date the band secured a spot on the Taste of Chaos Tour, were involved in the FuelTV (AUS) “Mountain Dew Battle for Supremacy II” skate program, and were a featured band on Australia’s nationwide TripleM Radio with interviews and track rotation for the title track “Modern Rivalry”.

Having much success in Australia, they’ve also had a taste of it the States as well; with songs featured on MTV’s Real World-Road Rules Challenge, FuelTV (Fox Sports) and on Skratch Magazine’s Warped Tour compilation. On the road, DrawCard has paired up with Parkway Drive, Taking Back Sunday, Underoath, Thursday and Senses Fail.

The largest camping festival over the New Year period, in NSW, Peats Ridge is a Sustainable Arts & Music Festival. It has proven to be a fresh, creative and innovative melting pot, where people can celebrate in a friendly and relaxed festival environment.

Peats Ridge, is held in the beautiful Glenworth Valley an hour north of Sydney. A three day event, it has become a major part of the annual calendar.

A year off for Homebake Festival

Homebake Music, Film & Arts Festival HQ have made the following announcement:

Whilst this past weekend witnessed a state of political confusion, we concur that we've certainly had our fair share as well. That said and with such a plethora of festival announcements of late, we've decided to go against the grain and as such - after much deliberation (& some procrastination) - we here at Homebake festival HQ have decided to take a break and postpone Homebake Music, Film & Arts Festival for this year only, 2010.

As we've not been able to have the 'planets align' to a standard we feel appropriate to the long standing reputation of Australia's largest 'locals only' event, we'd rather focus on a positive future and are instead planning for a unique return version of Homebake Festival to take place during the first week of December 2011.

The intention is for Homebake to return proverbially 'bigger and better' than ever, incorporating even more facets of the antipodean arts industries & with special incentives in place for the few generations of thousands of loyal Homebake devotees whom have attended over the past 15 years.
