TROPFEST ARABIA

November 7th 2011 21:07
IRAQI FILMMAKER WINS TROPFEST ARABIA

Over 12,000 excited film fans crowded onto Abu Dhabi’s glamorous Al Sahil beach on the weekend for the very first TROPFEST Arabia short film festival.

Jassem Al Jabbouri from Bagdad took home first prize with his filmFlock of Stars, judged by Tropfest Australia’s winning filmmaker Damon Gameau, Tropfest Director and Founder John Polson, Egyptian superstar Ahmed Helmy, and Arabian celebrities from across the region.

As part of the winning booty, Al Jabbouri will be flown to Sydney next February 2012 to join Gameau and Polson for the festival’s huge 20th birthday celebrations and to judge the competition.

Joined by his girlfriend, actress Zoe Tuckwell-Smith, Gameau took the trip to the UAE as part of his 2011 prize, in addition to cash.

Al Jabbouri beat eleven other finalists from across the Middle East and North Africa. The film had the audience awe struck with its beautiful animated story that had a strong environmental message.

"I'm so excited to win first place at the first ever TROPFEST Arabia,” said Al Jabbouri. “This is the greatest achievement of my life and a major step for my future career. I’ve also never been to Australia or LA; so I’m really excited to be getting this incredible opportunity to travel and network.”

Runners up Lubna Saeed Al Amoodi, a young female finalist from the UAE took out second place with her film ‘Smile’ and Ahmed Ghazal from Egypt received large cheers from the crowd with a film that looked at about the power of social networking, and how things can easily be misunderstood.

Polson, said: “What a great night, great films, great audience, great venue and great winner – I can’t wait for next year. The crowd was electric and the films dealt with a wide range of issues that each told a great story. At the end of the day, the telling of a great story is what Tropfest is all about.”

Judge and Tropfest Australia winner Gameau says, “Thiswas such a terrific experience and a cultural eye opener. Short films are such a great way to have a voice heard and film makers in that Arabic region certainly have some powerful things to say. It was a real treat and they really embraced the festival and made us feel incredibly welcome. I think it will become a very important cultural event for the Emerites.”

Since winning Movie Extra Tropfest Australia 2011, Gameau’s animation short Animal Beatbox, has been screened at festivals around the world, winning the Special Jury Recognition Prize at the Aspen International Film Festival in April this year. It was also handpicked by documentarian Michael Moore to screen at his Traverse City film festival in Michigan, in July this year.

The twelve Arabian finalists were selected from more than a hundred entrants by Polson and his Arabia c-director, Egyptian comedian and actor Ahmed Helmy, based on their creativity and originality.

As per Tropfest the world over, films must be no longer than seven minutes including titles and credits; contain the Tropfest Signature Item or TSI, and may not have screened previously in public. “Light bulb” – is the TSI for Tropfest Australia’s 20th birthday in 2012, and theNUMBER 2 was announced the TSI for Tropfest Arabia next year.

Tropfest Arabia runs in partnership with Abu Dhabi based media agency twofour54, with the aim of showcasing local filmmaking talent from the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.

A CHORUS LINE

October 2nd 2011 01:35
Adelaide Festival Centre in association with Tim Lawson presents

A CHORUS LINE

The stunning Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical A CHORUS LINE is coming to Adelaide Festival Centre’s Festival Theatre for a limited season beginning December 31.Tickets are now on sale online at bass.net.au and from 9am on Tuesday 4 October through all BASS outlets and on 131 246.

This singular sensation and dazzling new production comes direct from Broadway, directed and re-staged by Baayork Lee, with Musical Supervisor Peter Casey, produced by Tim Lawson and TML Enterprises.

A CHORUS LINE was originally conceived, choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett, featuring a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. Director Baayork Lee has been involved in A CHORUS LINE since 1975, first as a dancer in the original Broadway cast creating the role of Connie, through to directing the show in the U.S. and now in Australia.

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director Douglas Gautier says ”We are very much looking forward to presenting A CHORUS LINE as our summer musical. It will be a great night out for those of us who loved it the first time around, and it’s exciting to be able to introduce it to a whole new generation of theatre goers”

Producer Tim Lawson says “After seeing the incredible pool of talent at auditions, I know that audiences are going to be blown away by the dynamic talent that will shine in this Broadway classic. An exciting mix of new performers and established favourites”

A CHORUS LINE tells the tale of 17 dancers desperately auditioning for eight stage roles in a musical. Its origin stems from when Bennett started taping interviews with New York dancers sharing their feelings and frustrations.

The original production of A CHORUS LINE opened at the Public Theatre’s Newman Theatre in 1975 and transferred to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre later that year. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Score and Book, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. It ran for nearly 15 years, closing in 1990 after 6,137 performances. A CHORUS LINE remains the longest running American musical in Broadway history.

The song I've written is called “This Universe”. It is my first effort on my home recording system so the quality is just OK but I was keen to share. Either way the intention of the song is there. Lyrics below.

This Universe

In the still before sleep,
I float through the deep,
I lose all emotion,
I bliss in the sweet.

Its here that I pulse,
This precious world,
I’m moving through silence

This universe,
Whispers sweet words
Sings through my bones,
You’re not alone
Love, Love, Love

So let me love with my eyes,
And care with my verbs,
Kiss with my laughter
Listen and learn

And if sometimes the madness
Creeps up behind
I’ll listen to stillness

This universe,
Whispers sweet words
Sings through my bones,
You’re not alone

Peats Ridge Festival

September 2nd 2011 00:07
2011 LINE-UP ANNOUNCED!
TICKETS ON SALE 10am, SEPTEMBER 12!

Peats Ridge Festival

Picture New Years with Australia’s biggest musical act Gotye, in one of Australia’s most stunning rural locations - Glenworth Valley.

Best New Years Ever?

Peats Ridge Sustainable Arts & Music Festival Director Matt Grant thinks so.

In announcing the 2011 Peats Ridge line up just ahead of tickets going on sale on12th September, Grant, the man behind Australia’s premier three day camping Festival, which runs from 29 December - 01 January, has revealed man of the year Gotye will play the evening of the year at Peats Ridge. And that’s not all.

Australian gold and platinum record selling artist Xavier Rudd is also on the bill in time for his new album ‘Spirit Bird’ to hit Australian airwaves and UK party starter and deck spinner A-Skillz returns to OZ for the first time in three years after a sell out tour in 2008.

UK break beat legends Stanton Warriors make their first trip back to Australia in two years - hotly following the release of their new album ‘The Warriors’. New American rock band The Dum Dum Girls will come to Australia for the very first time following a hit 2010 debut album ‘I Will Be’ and two massive headline tours across the USA.

Peats Ridge has helped launch some of Australia’s greatest music sensations - Angus & Julia Stone, The Temper Trap, Kate Miller-Heidke, Washington, Cloud Control and more. Grant expects this new and incredibly diverse line up to continue to break new sounds and locally grown acts, as well as showcase for the first time new local and international acts to the Festival’s 10,000 per day plus fans.

“Husky is just on the cusp of blowing up,” says Grant. “Their new album soon to hit - “Forever So’, is incredible, and they’re brilliantly exciting performers to watch live. I also think Sietta is going to rock Peats Ridge, their songs are among Triple J’s most requested and have a sound that’s destined for great things and Tijuana Cartel are always good, they nail it every time.”

Hermitude will play just ahead of launching their first album, we think they’re by far one of Australia’s most talented hip hop acts. And we’re also really excited about killer blues/roots two piece Swamp Thing, with Michael Barkin from the John Butler Trio, I just love them.”

There are also a few surprises this year says Grant. “Chinese/Mongolian throat singing fusion six piece folk band Hanggai might seem out there to some, but I just know they’re going to blow minds. There’s so much diversity this year and we’ve been absolutely committed to giving the Festival the most creative and musically exciting line-up to date” he says.

Now in its eighth year, Peats Ridge is one of only a few camping festivals in New South Wales. The Festival offers a totally immersive experience of music, performing arts and culture. A world leading sustainable event recognised by the United Nations, Peats Ridge also has a dedicated eco-living education program as well as extensive environmental initiatives and awards. The Festival is also 100 percent family friendly with a dedicated Children’s Festival program for children and their adult friends, alongside family camping facilities.

General tickets go on sale at10am 12 September 2011 at peatsridgefestival.com.au at only $320 for adult season passes, this is the best value getaway you’re going to get this summer!

Equal love poem

August 14th 2011 02:14
Which boxes would God tick on a census form?
Mr?
Mrs?
Miss? or Ms?

Single?
De facto? They used to call this Living in sin
Divorced?
Married?

God won't mind being the butt of a little joke - after all his was not exactly a traditional family was it, one virgin mother and two fathers... I thought that's what IVF stood for.

If you scan the crowd you'll see that God's here with us today.

If God created man then maybe he's a woman because God couldn't be, you know... although... making someone in his own image I mean... camp! There's a word you don't hear very often these days, camp.

One from the Old Testament.

But what I'm here to remind everyone of
is the thing they need to keep close to heart
Love is love, that's what I've been taught,
inside the family of all
doesn't really matter so much if it's a boy or a girl,
as long as love is love, for love is all,
and love we shall the boy or girl
and hope that they may live and love as well,
and we maybe know, but really don't rely on,
the knowledge that love is love despite,
the name of the God construct whatever it may be,
you pick up your own baby
and tell it tenderly that love is love

We all be in, this picture too,
me and you - we're all among the supreme beings
who, celebrate or tolerate the god-construct
and debate what's left of the old testaments...

And some of us wait patiently for a re-mastered hi-definition re-boot of the same old story that actually acknowledges and involves us in this never ending glory, instead of the edit we have right now
which lacks the finer grace of supremacy
as expected of supreme beings as they supremely do
unto me and you
as they do when they don't say
love is love (for me and you), your loves askew,
my right's not for you

So what are a same sex couple supposed to actually do?

Bow our right to assert our interweaving endeavours to old little demi-John's construct that marriage is fundamentally owned by squares, don't expect to put us off, for love remains to be love
and the desire to be, in a me and me pair
just like her and her or he and he

It's quite a natural desire quite a natural place
quite a natural thing, if you ask me.

And if I don't ask, and/or you don't tell,
there's that other Old Testament word called Hell,
where we hide ourselves again and we step right back to when faggots were invented and the civil rights were less than slack,
we can swing on the pendulum while the arc swings wide
and hope to get a foot in the door (of this place) or a message left inside

Or grow our critical mass and demand a mandate against same sex apartheid we certainly can't just let it ride.

We are all family, you be all my brothers and my sisters here with me, so let the hand fit the glove when we raise it in unison, and let love being love,
be love.

If we truly have that right to love, then we have the right to see it recognised and respected just in every other way the construct's been invented
to supply the demand of men and women
to declaire their love and show love is love
through the family that they chose to be.

Let's you and me remind all who come to see
what it's all about - is love
because love is love and it's love

Lots of love,

with love David Jobling
