Next month Ironwood will be performing a beautiful string quartet program, Horizons, in Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsular (16, 18 September), and then Ironwood will continue their successful Education Program with a Sydney performance with St James' Choir called Bach and Beyond with the Developing Artists (22, 25 September). More details Here.

October marks a very special residency, with over 36 young musicians as apart of the Ironwood Education Program. And we need your help!

IRONWOOD APPEAL: TRANSPORT FUNDS FOR EDUCATION PROJECTS

$200 helps a young musician take part in this exceptional program: Donate HERE

We need help to get its young musicians to the artist-in-residence camp at Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon, on the Shoalhaven, NSW October 10-16, 2011.

Ironwood is very proud to have been offered a fifth year as Artists-In-Residence at Bundanon, NSW. October 2011 is a very special residency; after five years of incredible hard work and planning, Ironwood are taking 36 young musicians from all over Australia and New Zealand – part of our Developing Artist pre-professional education program – to Bundanon to form a classical orchestra.

Bundanon is a unique rehearsal and learning space for artists; providing opportunities to work alongside professional mentors in performance, research and arts business practices, as well as Arthur Boyd’s magical space to reflect and hone their own artistic practice.

Ironwood’s pre-professional program in historically informed performance is the only one of its type in the southern hemisphere, offering early music specialist students the opportunity to build links with the profession.

Bundanon Trust has generously given Ironwood this residency as a rehearsal camp, and Ironwood musicians will play alongside, and mentor the young musicians.

But we need help to get our young musicians to this residency! Ironwood receives no government funding to support the transport costs for our education program, and to date we have no corporate airline sponsorships to help offset flight costs. We want to make our programs accessible to ALL young people, regardless of their financial capacity to participate. Most of our young musicians are travelling from Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Auckland to participate in our programs.

Just $200 will sponsor a young musician’s airfare, all donations are tax deductible and are made through AbaF’s Australia Cultural Fund. You will be acknowledged as an invaluable supporter in our programs and on our website if you wish. We will be having an open rehearsal & afternoon tea at Bundanon, so you can meet your sponsored musician, and get to see the property.

OFFICIAL RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 ALBUM

August 10th 2011 02:00
New Zealand singing sensation HAYLEY WESTENRA launches

THE OFFICIAL RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 ALBUM

‘World In Union’
Rugby Union
The world's biggest-selling soprano, Hayley Westenra, launches The Rugby World Cup 2011 Official Album, entitled World In Union, to be released on Decca (a Division of Universal Music Operations Limited) in September.

The new Rugby World Cup 2011 album opens and closes with the title track ‘World In Union’ (based on Jupiter from Holst’s Planets Suite) – which has, over the years, been adopted as the global anthem for all Rugby World Cups. This rousing theme has become the only enduring official song for a major international sports event that is recorded anew for each Tournament, this year’s choice being the hosting nation’s own Hayley Westenra. This coincides with Hayley celebrating 10 years in the music industry.

The 24-year-old singer follows in the footsteps of another of the country’s most celebrated singers, fellow New Zealander Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, who topped the charts with her version for Rugby World Cup 1991.

Hayley has not only recorded the song in English and Maori, as heard on this album, but also in Italian, French and Japanese – each version is expected to be heard played in the relevant countries.

The album continues with 20 more stirring tracks from around the globe, featuring some of the world’s most successful singers, that will both unite and inspire.

Representing ENGLAND is “the Nation’s Favourite Tenor” Alfie Boe with The Band of the Coldstream Guards performing the rousing Jerusalem, and rising star Laura Wright with her tender, acoustic version of Swing Low, a great rugby anthem that is also contrastingly performed by Russell Watson. For SCOTLAND the song Now’s The Time, based on the tune of Loch Lomond, is here sung by Scottish Tenor Luigi Corvi. The traditional Flower of Scotland is also featured, performed by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. From WALES we have none other than The Fron Male Voice Choir with Land Of My Fathers, as well as music from Bryn Terfel and Katherine Jenkins. And IRELAND brings its official song Ireland’s Call featuring Brian Kennedy representing the North and Paul Byrom the South, and introduces new Irish songstress, Mairead, with her rendition of The Fields Of Athenry.

Also included is a recording from International superstar violinist André Rieu from HOLLAND, with singer Mirusia Louwerse from AUSTRALIA. From AFRICA comes The Kenyan Boys’ Choir, and Roberto Alagna represents FRANCE with his version of the French National Anthem.

Rugby World Cup 2011 will be the largest sporting event ever to be held in New Zealand, with over 85,000 visitors expected to flock from overseas – but wherever you are in the world, this album will provide the perfect soundtrack.

About Rugby World Cup 2011:

Rugby World Cup is the crown jewel of the sport and a prominent global property – with television coverage of Rugby World Cup 2007 spanning more than 200 territories, reaching a cumulative audience of 4 billion viewers. Rugby World Cup 2011 is being held in New Zealand for the first time since the inaugural event in 1987. Teams representing 20 nations will compete in 48 matches across 12 Host Cities between 9 September and 23 October 2011.

Festival of Unpopular Culture
program highlights

INFO: The Festival of Unpopular Culture
The Festival of Unpopular Culture is supported by Adelaide City Council, Format Collective, Renew Adelaide, TedX/Bridge8, Adelaide Thinkers in Residence, Adelaide Festival of Ideas and ANAT.

The comprehensive Festival of Unpopular Culture program boasts conversations about sex work legislation, the "sociology of getting plastered", the politics of punk, a hypothetical shake up of Australian arts funding and loads of other topics to be released in early September via a
limited edition printed program, social media and the Festival website. A swag of interstate guests will descend upon Adelaide for a ten-day talk-fest, peppered with live music, bizarre art happenings and ill thought out quasi sporting events.

Housed in the institution responsible for educating Adelaide's future cultural leaders; the festival will fill the Adelaide College of the Arts with thinkers, doers, makers and shit-stirrers.

Making full use of the atrium, galleries and lecture theatres, the Festival of Unpopular Culture invites audiences to buy a drink from the bar, sit down, speak up and engage in over a week of sometimes disturbing, sometimes hilarious, but always motivating and stimulating discussions and events.

ARTS

From Melbourne, the Festival welcomes Ester Anotalis (CEO, Melbourne Fringe) who, joined by Sandy Verschoor (EP, Adelaide Festival of Ideas),
Gavin Artz / ANAT
Gavin Artz (CEO, ANAT) and Jane Howard (arts blogger, No Plain Jane), will be asked: What would happen if every arts funding body in the nation was shut down? What if our entire funding system was rebuilt from scratch?
What if everybody - opera directors, street artists, concert pianists and hardcore collectives - had to reapply for the right to one big cultural slush fund? What would we do?

SEX

Also from Melbourne, Karen Pickering (host of Melbourne's feminist salon, Cherchez La Femme and editor of the Emerging Writers' Festival reader) will facilitate a discussion led by the Sex Industry Network's Ari Reid, on the law reforms being proposed for South Australia, sex positive feminist perspectives and the impact of social media on sex work.

DRUGS

We have a fixed way of looking at alcohol and drug abuse as a medical and psychological issue and a fixed culture of drug and alcohol use, which becomes particularly notable at the extremes. This panel features Chris Raine (Hello Sunday Morning), Lisa Dempster (AD, Emerging Writers' Festival), Dr Joseph Borlagdan (Australian Drug Foundation National Youth
Spokesperson), Jon Jurideini (head of the Department of Psychological Medicine, Women's and Children's Hospital).

MORE DRUGS

Social justice, rights and self-advocacy for drug users is the business of the Australian Injecting & Illicit Drug Users League and we've invited Annie Madden (EO, AIVL) and her team to discuss the representation of drug users, harm minimisation, drug culture and law. Hear from a panel of users representing the peak organisation for people who use or have used illicit
drugs in Australia.

GOVERNMENT

On this panel we've gathered together Government Engagement experts, including many who have been working productively with the Government Sector for decades, to talk about how we can better include Government in community decision making processes and visions for the future. Experts on Government Engagement and Collaborative Policy Design will discuss
how to get the Government Engaged, what role they can play in your initiatives and projects and how we can break down the sense of 'Us' and 'Them' to truly include the Government in the decision making process.

This panel features Adelaide's Thinker in Residence, John McTernan, who will be joined by a select group of current and former members of the
Australian Government Sector.

MUSIC

Live music - especially Hip-Hop, Metal and Punk - engages communities in a way that state subsidised cultural institutions can never hope to do. Live music is often a thinly-veiled excuse for subcultures to collide and foment. This panel features Dave Graney (lately of the Lurid Yellow Mist), Nicci Reid (Melbourne-based booking agent), and former Adelaide Thinker in
Residence and self-proclaimed aging punk, John McTernan.

VISUAL ART

In addition to panels and forums, a hefty visual arts program curated by Ray Forrester features interstate artist Diego Bonetto and his attempt to elevate the social status of disregarded botanical species. A selection of emerging and professional artists will be invited to create work in response to the ideas discussed at the Festival, the fruits of which will gradually fill our Festival Club, right in the heart of the Adelaide College of the Arts.

The Festival of Unpopular Culture will release its full program in September, including twitter hashtags for each event. If you can't be in Adelaide between October 7th and 16th, you can take part in the discussion online, with live tweeting of most sessions planned.

Follow the Festival on twitter: www.twitter.com/Unpop_Culture and
like the Festival on facebook to keep abreast of all the bad behind the scenes festival photos, tacky competitions and late night drunken witticisms.

WHAT: The Festival of Unpopular Culture.
WHEN: October 7th to October 16th, 2011.
WHO: Dr Ianto Ware, Stan Mahoney, Ray Forrester, Jennifer Greer Holmes & others
WHERE: Adelaide College of the Arts, Light Square & various city venues

TUTANKHAMUN

August 9th 2011 03:07
TUTANKHAMUN SHATTERS AUSTRALIAN RECORDS

‘TUTMANIA’ PROPELS EXHIBITION TO HALF-MILLION MILESTONE

Tuesday 9 August, 2011: Today Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs became the most successful touring exhibition in Australian history announcing its 500,000th visitor.

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs had previously set a record when it opened to the public on

8 April with 150,000 tickets pre-sold. Now four months into its seven month run, the exhibition has exceeded attendance figures for all Australian exhibitions that have come before it.

Premier and Minister for the Arts Ted Baillieu said the exhibition was a coup for Victoria that has drawn local, national and international visitors of all ages to Melbourne.

“This fantastic exhibition is the talk of Melbourne and the many regional visitors who have experienced its wonders,” Mr Baillieu said.

“It is clearly the biggest Victorian cultural event of the year and one of Australia’s biggest major events for 2011.

“The Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series has brought some fascinating and important exhibitions to Melbourne and it is exclusive events like this – and the staggering public response – that reinforces Melbourne’s reputation as Australia’s home of major events and the national hub of arts and culture.”

Reaching the 500,000th visitor ranks the exhibition higher than Melbourne Museum’s A Day in Pompeii in 2009 which attracted 332,679 people and Titanic the Artefact exhibition in 2010 which reached 480,879 in its six-month run. Interstate the highest attended exhibition had been the National Gallery of Australia’s Masterpieces from Paris, which recorded attendances of 476,000.

Not only has Tutankhamun surpassed the previous record held by Titanic by almost 20,000 but it has done so in just four months.

Stephen Flint Wood, Managing Director of IMG Arts & Entertainment, said of the milestone “‘Tutmania’ is alive and well in Australia, and with another three months left in the run, this will be a precedent setting cultural event for the country. It is fantastic to see such excitement about a period in time which holds so much historical significance.”

“I would like to acknowledge and thank the Victorian Government, the Victorian Major Events Company and Melbourne Museum as the Australian visit of this exhibition has only been possible through our partnership with them.”

Dr J Patrick Greene, CEO Museum Victoria said high-profile touring exhibitions such as Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs added significant value to both the Museum, as well as to the state of Victoria.

“Tutankhamun is one of the most significant exhibitions ever to visit Australia. The extraordinary artefacts from ancient Egypt have attracted thousands of visitors from metropolitan and regional Victoria, as well as interstate and overseas,” Dr Greene said.

“It also provides a wonderful complement to our award-winning galleries at Melbourne Museum, our public programs and to the experiences that Museum Victoria provides for its visitors every day.”

Other key figures for Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs announced today:

- 35% of visitors to the exhibition are from interstate or overseas which makes it Victoria’s leading cultural tourism driver.

- 90,000 school children from junior and secondary schools have enjoyed the treasures of the boy king.

A Day in Pompeii recorded 30,000.

There are just three months left until the doors to Tutankhamun’s treasures in Australia close on 6 November.

This is the first visit of King Tutankhamun’s treasures to Australia, and Melbourne is the exhibition’s one and only stop on the continent. Advanced booking is recommended to guarantee desired date and time.

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs is a National Geographic exhibition that explores the figures who guided ancient Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. The exhibition focuses on the 18th Dynasty, a 250-year period when Egypt was at the height of its power and the “Golden Age” of Egyptian artistry. This was the era when Tutankhamun and his ancestors reigned.

The exhibition is organised by the National Geographic Society, Arts and Exhibitions International and IMG, with cooperation from the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities. The Australian visit is made possible by a partnership with the Victorian Coalition Government, Victorian Major Events Company and Melbourne Museum.

VINYL rotations No.6

August 5th 2011 01:00
More laidback Sunday afternoon mayhem in that irregular moment at West End's Hi-Fi hosting odd rotations as spun by Consume.

A succession of whatever ties up finding its feet in the front bar known as VINYL amid the random nature of Boundary St.

Free entry insured. See the sixth show of bouts here:

SUN 14 AUG - VINYL rotations

The HiFi 125 Boundary St West End, Brisbane, Queensland

2.00pm start rotation with HONKY KONG Dj Archie Jacobson along with new cohort DJ SCORPIO. Archie Jacobson never appears without his red Kaftan Shirt and flares, and always puts on a colourful and surprising show. Archie loves playing Dj supports for bands and artists relishes the opportunity to play tunes that excite the artist and the crowd, and tie in the musical themes of the event.

DJ Scorpio is the rural record spinner. 25 years of house parties and ad hoc paid gigs have fostered deep-seated insecurities as whether he is in fact a larger-than-life smokin DJ or merely another flawed human with a large record collection. He takes records out of their cover, puts 'em on the platter, and plays 'em.

3.15 - 4.00pm BIGSTRONGBRUTE

BIGSTRONGBRUTE is Paul Donoughue and began four years ago as a means to experiment with simple pop songwriting. Over time, BigStrongBrute has shared stages (and backyards, hallways and abandoned construction sites) in Australia and New York with Jens Lekman (Sweden), Tiny Vipers (US), Mt Eerie (US), Songs, Dent May (US), Alex & The Ramps and I Heart Hiroshima. We Can Sleep Under Trees In The Morning, a six track EP, is his first proper release.

4.45 - 5.45pm RICK FIGHTS

Rick Fights is Matt Somers from I Heart Hiroshima's shadow figure.

I Heart Hiroshima have released 2 albums - Tuff Teef and The Rip; toured Australia, Europe, Vietnam and NZ. He is now taking his songwriting urges directly to himself and to you. It's insular music about imaginary figures; take one person, one electric guitar, one technically overloaded amplifier and a great deal of nerves. Whisk carefully, and leave to sit for 15-20 minutes. Don't be alarmed if it begins to make some noise.

3Penny Opera

July 30th 2011 23:15
Sydney Theatre Company and Asteron present
the Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera production of
Bertolt Brecht & Kurt Weill's

The Threepenny Opera
Text by Raimondo Cortese.
Lyrics by Jeremy Sams.

1 to 24 September 2011. Opening Night: 3 September 2011 at 8.00pm.
Sydney Theatre, 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

Featuring an exceptional cast including Paul Capsis (as Jenny), Jolyon James (as Tiger Brown), Luke Joslin (as Filch), Lucy Maunder (as Polly), Amanda Muggleton (as Mrs Peachum), Eddie Perfect (as Macheath) and Grant Smith (as Mr Peachum) the Brecht-Weill musical masterpiece, The Threepenny Opera, is at Sydney Theatre from 1 to 24 September 2011, opening Saturday 3 September.

The most notorious anti-hero to storm a stage, Macheath - or Mack The Knife as he's known on the streets - is the original city criminal who's never met a law, a woman or a cop he couldn't break. That is until he challenges the supremacy of the Beggar King Peachum and his empire of manufactured woes. With Peachum and cunning cop Tiger Brown on his case the last thing Mack needs is a couple of molls competing for ownership of him. But when it comes to the ladies, this Lothario throws caution to the wind and leaps in head first.

Taking John Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728) as the basis for a critique of the greed, lust, evil and corruption they considered to be at heart of bourgeois society, Brecht and Weill incorporated the danger and hedonism of 1920's Berlin music and cabaret to create a 20th Century milestone of musical theatre. At the heart of the Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera co-production, directed by Michael Kantor and conducted by Richard Gill, is the raw, jazzy and intensely beautiful music.

Raimondo Cortese's vivid adaptation, featuring lyrics by Jeremy Sams, captures that spirit of the Weimar republic at its height, while superimposing the action onto recognisably Australian streets.

Sydney Theatre Company presents The Threepenny Opera as part of Berlin Sydney: a program of theatre, music, cabaret and exhibitions inspired by 20s and 30s Berlin held at leading arts venues across Sydney.

Director: Michael Kantor. Conductor: Richard Gill. Set Designer: Peter Corrigan. Costume Designer: Anna Cordingley. Lighting Designer: Paul Jackson. Choreographer: Kate Denborough.

Eddie Perfect & Paul Capsis (in)

Adelaide Cinematheque

July 29th 2011 01:49

Adelaide 2011 Cinematheque (Season 2)

A must for all cinephiles, launches on Monday 8 August, 7.30pm at the Mercury Cinema with an unmissable screening of 1945 romantic classic Les Enfants Du Paradis (Children of Paradise).

The Cinematheque is dedicated to screening significant films from the history of cinema and this year's program includes a diverse range of classic and contemporary films showcasing directors, actors and thematic series.

Set among the Parisian theatre scene, Marcel Carne's Les Enfants Du Paradis is a tragic tale of the beautiful courtesan Garance and the four men who love her.

Other Season 2 highlights include Terrence Malick: The Restless Search for Epiphany. In the wake of Terrence Malick's recent release, Tree of Life, this season will feature a selection of his haunting and abstract films, including his 1973 debut Badlands and the 2006 retelling of Pocahontas, The New World, starring Christian Bale and Colin Farrell.

Lovers of Australian film were saddened by news of the demise earlier this year of iconic Australian actor Bill Hunter. The Australian Everyman: Bill Hunter pays tribute to the celebrated actor who appeared in more than 60 films. The season features Peter Weir's emblematic Gallipoli (1981), Philip Noyce's Newsfront (1978), Craig Lahiff's Fever (1988) and the unforgettable 1994 comedy Muriel's Wedding (PJ Hogan).

A celebration of one of the most recognisable and irresistible cinematic genres, Dark Seduction: Film Noir's Bad Girls looks at the sultry temptresses whose charms would seduce a man into committing unheard of crimes. Don't miss Robert Siodmak's murderous and beautiful love story The Killers (1946), based on a Ernest Hemingway story and starring Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster or Orson Wells' enthralling 1947 mystery, Lady From Shanghai.

The 80s Brat Pack, a program of 80s cult classics includes John Hughes widely loved 1985 comedy The Breakfast Club and Joel Schumacher's St Elmo's Fire (1985).

Breakfast Club
The 2011 Cinematheque season finishes with a special Christmas Screening of Joe Dante's 1984 comic horror cult classic Gremlins.

At the end of selected sessions, members are invited to join Mercury staff and volunteers for a complimentary drink after the movie, thanks to Barossa Valley Brewing. Stay and chat about your favourite actors, auteurs, scenes and themes, talk about what you loved and didn't love and what you want to see more of on the big screen at Cinematheque.

The full Season 2 program is available at: mercurycinema.org.au Screenings are only available to society members, but anyone can join and becoming a member is easy and great value. Sign up on the spot at any Ten News Adelaide Cinematheque session or phone 8410 0979.
