Angela Little (aka Ophelia of the Spirits) - The Voice of ‘Australia’ Sydney-based composer and performer Angela Little (also known as Ophelia of the Spirits) was revealed as the singer chosen to record the love song for Baz Luhrmann’s new epic ‘Australia’ at the film’s world premiere in Sydney.
‘By The Boab Tree’ was co-written by Felix Meagher, Baz Luhrmann and the singer herself, and featured on the end credits of the film. Angela has been working on ‘Australia’ for the past six months composing and scoring additional music for the film with collaborator and mentor Felix Meagher, in a music team headed by Oscar-nominated composer David Hirschfelder.
Her voice last featured on a trailer for ‘Australia’ at the Opening Ceremony for the Rugby League World Cup, singing a version of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ which she also co-composed with Felix Meagher & Baz Luhrmann – a version which can also be heard on the end credits of the film.
Alongside her work on the film, Angela has been carving out a niche for her alter-ego Ophelia of the Spirits, releasing her debut EP in May 2008 and headlining shows in the live venues of Sydney and Melbourne, performing at The Basement, The Vanguard and Manchester Lane during October and November.
Ophelia of the Spirits is a concept and character which blends Angela’s fascination with
music for film and theatre with her songwriting and performing, exploring the dark magic of a human life through a mystical journey of sound and vision. She takes her name from the character Ophelia in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet and Federico Fellini’s 1965 film Giulietta degli Spiriti (Juliet of the Spirits).
Ophelia of the Spirits’ self-titled debut EP will be re-released on December 6th through MGM Distribution and The Little Label, and with her work on ‘Australia’ now finished, Angela is heading into the studio with Sydney-based Icelandic producer Geir Brillian and her band to begin work on her second ‘Ophelia of the Spirits’ EP, set for release in early 2009.
