BATTLE OF THE CHOIRS WINNER IS…

August 4th 2008 06:23
The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir
Debut album Battle Cry out now

Available exclusively through participating Australia Post outlets from today

It was state vs state, classic vs contemporary in last night's Battle of the Choirs grand final on Channel Seven. The classic ensemble The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir went head to head with contemporary youth groups Harambee and VoxSynergy, both from Melbourne.

The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir was victorious and took home $100,000 in prize money along with an album deal from Universal Music. University of Newcastle Conductor, Philip Matthias, said the Choir's journey throughout the competition was exhilarating and intense, and a great learning experience for all:

"We obviously transformed from a 'classical' choir to 'rock' choir, but there was no pretence here - it was a real transformation. Interestingly this has fed back into the Choir's classical style. They are certainly freer in approach and embody the music more - a great result.”

"With the prize money we hope to establish and sustain a complete range of choral activities through the Conservatorium for people of all ages and walks of life, including the disadvantaged. We hope to increase awareness of the enormous benefits of being in a choir, not only for the singing of course, but for social and health reasons as well.”

Their debut album Battle Cry is released today exclusively through participating Australia Post outlets. It features a collection of songs that The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir performed throughout the show. Classic tracks including Bohemian Rhapsody, Great Southern Land, Bat Out Of Hell, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Angel, Purple Haze plus many more.

PORNOGRAPHERS CHALLENGE AUSTRALIA

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS
CHALLENGE AUSTRALIA

Canada's The New Pornographers are set to return to Australia for a national tour this Spring. Headed by A.C Newman, vocalist Neko Case0 and an outrageously talented cast of musicians, this Canadian supergroup have released four widely acclaimed album gems since they first gathered in 1997.

The New Pornographers’ latest record Challengers was released late last year, creating even more excitement and praise than their previous works

A staggering masterclass in indie-pop songwriting that will make your brain melt and send firecrackers around your heart - New Musical Express

Challengers ultimately proves to be the group's finest hour. - Mojo

Challengers is The New Pornographers most organic-sounding record, reflecting a conscious decision to use less beepy synth and almost entirely real instruments, recruiting an entire string section, plus harp, flute and more.

Don't miss The New Pornographers October Australian Tour.

BEATS WORKING Tour Dates

July 23rd 2008 04:22
BEATS WORKING
ANNOUNCE NEW TOUR DATES

Best way to describe Beats Working? Spontaneous, orchestrated, brilliant, yet unpredictable!

If you don’t know who Beats Working are, they are a fresh new band that take the definition of hip hop to a whole new level, attracting the attention of industry heavyweights and record labels as well as building a solid local following.

Beats Working is a musical collaboration between Handsome Dan, (Dan Leaver) JB aka 1 (James Branson -previously Kid Confucius), with MC Mullut, (Tullum Delaney) and DJ Helmy (Tim Helmy) who have been feverishly brewing in a basement in the hills surrounding Coffs Harbour since early 2007.

Taking inspiration from a diverse range of artists such as Oz hip hop stalwarts like The Hoods and the Herd, to American pioneers like The Roots and Gnarls Barkley, through to the whole spectrum of pop music such as The Beatles and Goldfrapp. Beats Working are constantly crossing genres blending hip hop with a few cheeky samples that even Mum remembers.

Set for release on July 30 through Obese Records, the band’s debut, Harbour Drive, is set to take them to a whole new national audience. Across 14 magnificent tracks, Beats Working create a sound that is instantly recognisable, setting funk, soul, and pop on a collision course with ambitious lyrics, solid string and brass sections and dynamic arrangements. They are lyrically clever covering numerous aspects of life like parties, women, highs, lows and everything that encompasses the life of a twenty something in Australia. Musically, Beats Working have developed their own patented sound that nods its roots in traditional Aussie hip hop (Mad Sip and Exercise) but isn't afraid to be different and expand its versatility and potential; a la mashed up experimental soul (The Piece, One More Reason), orchestral hip hop (Confessions of a Mallrat, Devil's Food) and even some alternative country and rock (first single Hey Lena with guitarist Phil Emmanuel). Previous Triple J single, Exercise has already shown potential, being shortlisted from 250 entrants, in the top 5 of the wotnext.com competition, a nationwide initiative led by Kram from Spiderbait to search for Australia's top unsigned talent.

In under 12 months, Beats Working have built a strong and loyal fan base in Newcastle and the North Coast, headlined their own shows from Coffs to Thredbo and impressively supported the best Oz hip hop business such as The Herd, Casual Projects, Nikkita & The Tongue, Pegz & DJ Bonez, Scott Burns & A-Love. The band also played at ‘the sold out, Groovin The Moo Festival (Maitland, April 2008) alongside Katalyst, Resin Dogs and The Presets.

While some bands may prefer to specialise in one sound, the musically ambitious collective of Beats Working take it a step further. Whether dishing up an energetic live set or wafting through your home stereo their quick- witted rhythms and rhymes are guaranteed to make you bounce!

“Blending a clever mix of upbeat influences, they’re set to join the growing ranks of Aussie beat-meisters to successfully assault mainstream charts… sharp beats and rhythms that make a bee-line for the central nervous system…Original and imaginative…” (Forte Mag #427)

Beats Working debut album, Harbour Drive, in-stores July 30 through Handsome Records/Obese Records
