MICHELINE VAN HAUTEM
featuring Frederik Caelen, performs
The Songs of Jacques Brel
By arrangement with the Adelaide Cabaret Festival
“Short of major surgery, cancel whatever you have on tonight and hear Micheline Van Hautem…”
“She takes Brel’s standards and remakes them in her own image.
And Frederik Caelen, worth the price of admission on his own.” - The Times, London
Returning by popular demand after sell-out shows in 2004, sexy, soulful MICHELINE VAN HAUTEM and her virtuoso accordionist Frederick Caelen bring the immortal music of Jacques Brel to life in a limited Sydney season.
“Even though he lived quite a few years ago, and he’s a man, I still find a very strong connection with his music.” And so does every audience that comes to see the spell-binding Belgian siren Micheline Van Hautem abandon herself to the poetry and the passion of Jacques Brel’s repertoire. With her musical partner, virtuoso accordionist Frederik Caelen, these two last year stunned packed houses in Adelaide, at the Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne International Festivals. And now they return to Australia in triumph with an even more intimate, more intense show at Sydney’s most sophisticated new live music venue, @Newtown.
Singing in French, Flemish, English (and fluent body language!), Micheline channels Brel’s pure emotion in stunningly sensual detail.
Jacques Brel was one of the 20th century’s greatest chansonniers, tapping both the bright heights and the dark depths in songs such as “Seasons in the Sun”, “In the Port of Amsterdam” and “Ne Me Quitte Pas”. In Micheline van Hauten, his passionate music finds its greatest interpreter with pure, thrilling emotion and an uplifting joie de vivre that will have Sydney audiences on their feet cheering!
