RECYCLING OUR WAY TO A CLEANER HOMEBAKE!

RECYCLING OUR WAY TO A CLEANER HOMEBAKE!

Wow! Congratulations to all of those Homebake attendees who participated in our recycling system last year. Homebake achieved the highest rate of recycling ever recorded in its long and illustrious history.

Gabriella Cilmi

Over 115,000 aluminium cans and 8,500 PET plastic bottles were recovered for recycling into new products and resulted in an overall recycling rate of greater than 95%. An incredible effort and didn't the site look brilliant throughout the entire event.

Everyone who brought back their containers for recycling received their original deposit back meaning no one was out of pocket and the environmental benefits were huge including;

• Over 1,900 kilograms of Aluminium and Pet plastic were diverted away from landfill and captured for recycling;

• The energy saved from cans recycled at Homebake was the equivalent of running 347,000 television sets for 1 hour;

• Homebake also conserved 8.5 tonnes of Bauxite (used to make new aluminium);

•The Royal Botanic Gardens were better protected, less littered and rally looked a million bucks.

Homebake is proud to once again operate this innovating recycling system at this year's show.

So how does this recycling thing work? It is very simple really, and will not cost you a cent if you follow the 4 easy steps below (plus you will be helping to save valuable resources and the environment):

1. When you go to the bar to buy a drink served in an Aluminium or PET plastic container, included in the price of the drink is a $1.00 deposit

2. Once you have finished your drink, take your container (aluminium can or PET plastic bottle) to one of 3 recycling centres located next to each of the main bars

3. Hand over your container (or containers) to receive a drink ticket valued at $1.00 (i.e. $1.00 for each container handed back to the recycling centre staff)

4. You can then use this drink ticket to go towards part of the cost of your next drink or simply redeem your $1.00 by handing the drink ticket to the bar staff; and

5. At the end of the night, hand back your last drink container before you leave at one of the recycling centres. Take your $1.00 drink ticket and redeem it at the bar to get your original $1.00 back.

Remember the bars close at 10.30pm and the recycling centres close at 10.45pm sharp, so make sure you have redeemed any deposits before the close of the event.

Refunding your container deposit after 10.45pm is not possible.

Once again the recycling system is proudly supported by Diageo Australia.
Homebake acknowledges the good folk at Diageo for their invaluable assistance helping us to put this recycling initiative together!
