The Wharf, situated at Pier 4 and 5, Walsh Bay, is formerly a working pier that is now home to composers, carpenters, actors, directors, designers, painters, stage managers, electricians, mechanists, administrators and many others working alongside each other in one extraordinary building to create a diverse array of theatrical events. Here, ideas are grown and collaborations born, sets are built, costumes sewn and all this in the same remarkable building where productions are being rehearsed and then presented, suspended above the waters of Sydney Harbour.
The Wharf was officially handed over to Sydney Theatre Company in December 1984. Elizabeth Butcher who had, with John Clarke, steered the STC’s first Interim Season in 1979 had been searching for an appropriate home for the Company to consolidate all of its activities, bringing set construction, costume and rehearsal all under one roof. When she eventually saw the disused finger wharf inhabited only by seagulls, at Walsh Bay, Butcher knew she had found just the place. She, the then Artistic Director Richard Wherrett and architect Vivian Fraser recognised that there was an ‘industrial logic’ to the pier, a unique horizontal space where materials could enter at one end and progress through various stages until they arrived on stage in Wharf One and Two. The unique qualities of The Wharf have now inspired theatre makers and audiences for close to 25 years.
Self-guided tours of The Wharf
Visitors can wander around and discover The Wharf at their own pace throughout the day.
Earlier this year the 2008 Australian Institute of Architects named the Wharf and architect Vivian Fraser, winner of its 25 Year Award. Described by the jury as having “set new standards for adaptation” in Australia, they also commented: “It showed how successfully industrial buildings could be used” and “it remains a vibrant part of Sydney’s cultural life” 24 years after its completion.
Also on Open Day, in addition to access and activities at The Wharf, there will be forums and a screening across the road at Sydney Theatre, opposite Pier 6/7 at 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay. Opened in 2004 on the site of the old Bond Stores, the state-of-the-art venue is managed year round by Sydney Theatre Company.
Please Note: The date of the Open Day, originally scheduled for 25 October has been postponed by one week due to trackwork planned across the Sydney rail network for the 25th including the closure of Circular Quay and other stations.
