RRP: $39.95
V&A Publications
The Surrealist art movement has arguably been the most influential of all modern art genres. Preceded by Dadaism, it is the essence of Surrealism that fuels many advertising campaigns today, particularly since the advent of CGI technology. Countless post-CGI television productions and movies are informed by the remarkable imagery first realised by Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Jean Arp and Rene Magritte. In conjunction with the Victoria & Albert Museum this series of excellent books have been published to celebrate the often awe inspiring works of the Surrealists. Surreal People sets out to inform the reader of the unique collaborative approaches Surrealist artists took to creating works that reflect the subconscious, melding life with perceptions of death.
Surreal People also contextualizes the movement in modern history pointing out the influences of the World Wars upon the mostly European creative minds who founded Surrealism. Although the name Salvador Dali comes to mind whenever the term Surrealist is raised, for Dali more than anyone commercialised his every move as the ‘Father of Surrealism’, it is fortunate and proper that these variously significant other major artists of the movement are recognised in this thoroughly researched and excellently illustrated art lovers dream book.
ALSO IN THE SERIES:
The Surrealist Body: Fetish and Fashion by Ghislaine Wood (RRP $39.95)
Surreal Things by Ghislaine Wood (RRP $125.00)
David Jobling.
