SYDNEY JEWISH WRITERS’ FESTIVAL
17–19 August 2008
Qstage and Soundpet.com welcome authors attending the 2008 Sydney Jewish Writer’ Festival.
The Sydney Jewish Writers Festival (SJWF) aims to celebrate the richness of Australian and world-wide Jewish writing. It is an exciting feature of the country's Jewish cultural landscape, bringing together some of the most significant contributors to Australian literary life.
The festival runs over five days, and is timed to precede the annual Sydney Writers Festival, at which some of the SJWF presenters also appear.
The objectives of the SJWF are:
To showcase writers who embrace their Jewish identity and/or who write on Jewish themes, regardless of their personal backgrounds.
To expose the community to the range of subjects that comprise contemporary Jewish writing.
To promote the talents and the ideas of writers by introducing them to audiences who have not yet read their writing and by enabling those who have read their work to meet the author behind the story, idea or research.
The Sydney Jewish Writers' Festival is a project of The Shalom Institute, which undertakes to provide quality adult education programs and events for the Sydney Jewish community.
The line up includes a talented array of both international and local writers: Daniel Mendelsohn, Diane Armstrong, Sabina Wolanski and Susanne Gervay.
Daniel Mendelsohn’s multi award-winning book, The Lost, is a rich and riveting narrative that follows the writer’s search for the truth behind his family’s tragic past in World War II. Born on Long Island and educated at the University of Virginia and at Princeton, Mendelsohn is a frequent contributor to the New York Review of Books as well as the New York Times Magazine and the New York Times Book Review, and is a contributing editor at Travel Leisure. His first book, The Elusive Embrace, was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year. He teaches at Bard College.
Diane Armstrong left her native Poland with her parents after World War II and migrated to Australia. She is an award-winning journalist and bestselling author of Mosaic, A Chronicle of Five Generations, The Voyage of Their Life, and the novel Winter Journey. Diane’s latest book, Nocturne, is a powerful and inspiring testament to resilience and courage in the face of cruelty and betrayal.
Sabina Wolanski is a successful businesswoman and Holocaust survivor. Sabina had been just 12 when her home town in Poland was invaded by Nazis who murdered her family. Sabina’s memoir, Destined to Live: One Woman’s War, Lives, Love Remembered, is an emotional account of her journey from the early days in Poland through to her life in Australia. Sabina often speaks to schools and Jewish groups about her experiences during World War II. She lives in Sydney with her fourth husband, Kjeld.
Susanne Gervay is an award-winning Australian author and a specialist in child development. Her much-loved and bestselling I am Jack is becoming a classic on school bullying, reaching adults and children alike, while Butterflies is recognised as a defining book on youth disability. Susanne’s books have earned awards ranging from the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Notable Books list to the Family Therapy Awards. She is well known as a mentor, speaker and facilitator in the writing community. Susanne’s latest book, That’s Why I Wrote this Song is a coming-of-age story about an all-girl rock band in search of love, life and independence.
