The Sydney Piano Competition Winner

Riverside Theatres proudly presents the outstanding winner of the renowned competition THE SYDNEY PIANO COMPETITION at Riverside Theatres on Wednesday 20 August at 7.30pm. The competition is broadcast live on ABC Classic FM, produced for ABC TV and streams live around the globe on abc.net.au.
The Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia began in July 1977 and is internationally recognized as one of the world’s great Piano Competitions. This year’s competition, which is the 9th, commences on the 16 July and finishes on the 2 August.
The Competition is unique in providing air fares, accommodation and daily allowance for a maximum of 36 selected competitors, all of whom play in the first two recital stages. There will be cash prizes totaling approximately $150,000.
The 2008 competitors come from all areas of the globe - USA, Italy, Portugal, Hungary, Russia, South Korea, China, Spain and many more. After the heats and finals across some of Australia's most prestigious music venues the winner begins an extensive concert tour throughout Australia.
The Sydney International Piano Competition is held every four years, presented in association with the University of Sydney and with the co-operation of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. It was accepted as a member of the Federation of International Music Competitions in 1978.
Previous winners have included John Chen, who has recently performed the Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 Emperor with the Jena Orchestra in Germany; Alex Volodin, who will be performing with the Orchestras National Symphonic (Greece), Karlsruhe, Münster, Philharmonie (Luxembourg), Mariinsky (Russia), Orchestre and; Spencer Myer, who has recently had his third return tour to South Africa since winning the First Prize in the 10th UNISA International Piano Competition in Pretoria.
