THE BREAK delivers a clean up set with ‘Cylinders’!
On the eve of performing their first official run of shows, THE BREAK, the new surf rock band featuring Midnight Oil's drummer Rob Hirst, guitarists Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey along with Brian Ritchie bass player from Violent Femmes unleash the video for their debut track ‘Cylinders’.
Like all great instrumental tracks, ‘Cylinders’ conjures up various visual images. The pounding go-go rhythms of Hirst and Ritchie perfectly underpin Moginie and Rostsey’s signature zip locked twin guitar attack. Classic surf, Sci Fi, and spy tones resonate whilst managing to present a fresh and contemporary approach.
With the bulk of the album tracks named after legendary surf breaks it’s fitting the ‘Cylinders’ video depicts unbelievable surf footage interspersed with some magic live action from the band performing in the studio. The majority of the surf footage was supplied by acclaimed surf cinematographer Tim Bonython and includes grabs from the giant waves of ‘Jaws’ - the legendary big wave break in Hawaii. This year’s swell was billed as ‘The 100 Year Wrath’ and according to Tim who filmed the footage in January this year; the waves were “terrifying yet mesmerising – amazing!”
Highly regarded Melbourne-based commercials director and film-maker Craig MacLean directed the band footage which was shot at Sound Level in Sydney and also supervised the editing of the video with Chris Reynolds at activemotion in Melbourne.
When mixing the track, producer extraordinaire Nick Launay said, "I felt like Tarantino on my way for a surf down telstar billabong creek!"
Tune into your favourite music TV show or check the clip out on the web, either way, be sure to strap yourself in for one hell of a ride!
