16 SEPTEMBER TO 26 OCTOBER 2008 (OPENS 20 SEPTEMBER AT 8PM) WHARF 1, SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY, PIER 4 HICKSON ROAD, WALSH BAY THEN TOURS TO MELBOURNE’S MALTHOUSE FROM 6 NOVEMBER 2008

Sydney Theatre Company presents The Women of Troy by Euripides, adapted by Barrie Kosky and STC Associate Director Tom Wright following the huge success of their last award-winning collaboration, The Lost Echo. The cast includes Robyn Nevin directed by Kosky for the first time, as well as Melita Jurisic making a welcome return to STC following her memorable performances in The Three Sisters, Mourning Becomes Electra and Tartuffe. The production is at Wharf 1 from 16 September 2008.

Troy is a ruin. The men and most of the children are dead and the surviving women await transportation or death as the city burns around them. Robyn Nevin plays Hecuba, once the most powerful woman in the empire, awaiting an uncertain future haunted by memories, visions and prophecies. She is visited by her seemingly mad daughter Cassandra, her grieving daughter-in-law Andromache and the woman who triggered the whole catastrophe, Helen – all three portrayed by Melita Jurisic.

Arthur Dignam portrays Menelaus alongside an ensemble of exceptional vocalists as chorus, with live music featuring throughout, including the haunting, melancholy songs of 17th Century composer John Dowland.

For Kosky, The Women of Troy is the third instalment of a trilogy of Euripides, following his acclaimed Medea at the Vienna-Schauspielhaus and The Bacchae as part of STC’s The Lost Echo. Distilling the essence of this masterpiece to reveal a disturbing and visceral chamber work, he and Wright focus their unique theatrical force on the realm of mythology, illuminating its enduring connection to the contemporary world.
