History:
Established in 1912 for film exhibition, The Thornbury Theatre screened some of Australia’s first talkies in 1929. It continued to run as a grand picture palace until the 1960’s when it was reconfigured as an entertainment and function venue.
Comprising a grand entrance hall with an ornate domed ceiling, a bar and lounge, two commercial kitchens, ground floor banquet hall and a 1st floor grand ballroom with 25 foot ceilings, it's amazing.
How to get there By Car:
Follow Hoddle Street, Smith Street or Wellington Street going north. Turn right onto Queens Parade and then turn left onto High Street. Over the hill, you’ll go past Wesley Anne on the right and Northcote Social Club on the left. It’s about 1.3 km over Separation Street on the left at 859 High St, Thornbury.
By Tram:
You can catch the number 86 Bundoora tram line from Bourke Street in the city, through to Smith Street Collingwood and up through Northcote. Get off at Stop 41 at the corner of High Street and Collins Street.
By Train:
Catch the Epping Line to Thornbury Station (the last station in Zone 1). It’s a 3 minute walk up Hutton Street then right up High Street.
