TAYLOR SWIFT'S FEARLESS ALBUM

March 22nd 2010 02:14
TAYLOR SWIFT'S FEARLESS ALBUM OFFICIALLY LAUDED AS
MOST AWARDED ALBUM IN COUNTRY MUSIC HISTORY

TAYLOR SETS NEW BILLBOARD RECORD FOR TOP 10 HITS

Swift's six-times-Platinum FEARLESS album was officially recognized as the Most Awarded Album in the History of Country Music last night at a private dinner in Nashville.

FEARLESS is the only album in history to win the all-genre Album of The Year GRAMMY, plus Country Album of the Year Awards from the GRAMMYs, the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and the American Music Awards.

Representatives from NARAS, The American Music Awards, The Country Music Association, and the Academy of Country Music all joined Big Machine Records Group President/CEO Scott Borchetta for an unprecedented group presentation honouring Taylor for her achievement.

FEARLESS, released in 2008, has won every album award in the country music genre, and was named all-genre Album of the Year at the 2010 GRAMMY Awards. Taylor, who turned 20 in December, was the youngest artist in history to win the music industry’s coveted top prize and she is also the award’s first-ever solo female country winner and the first solo female winner in more than a decade. Taylor wrote or co-wrote every song on FEARLESS.

“We tend to always look forward when it comes to Taylor, but tonight it was time to stop for a moment and look back on one of the most successful music works of all time,” said Scott Borchetta of the historic evening. “The eighteen months of our lives known as the ‘Fearless’ era have been history-making, euphoric and triumphant. The sales, the airplay, the accolades and the awards have all just been incredible. But most important to me is that my friend Taylor and her collective team of family, record label, management and her road family continue to raise the bar with work ethic, achievement and enjoyment. Dreams do come true.”

Taylor was also honoured at last night’s event for
More than 13 Million in total record sales
More than 25 Million Digital Downloads
The 6X Platinum (6 Million) Certification of FEARLESS in the USFEARLESS as the #1 selling album in the US in both 2008 & 2009
The 5X Platinum (5 Million) Certification of Taylor Swift in the US
The #1 and #2 positions atop Nielsen’s BDS 2009 Top 10 Most Played Songs chart (all genres), with “You Belong With Me” and “Love Story”
The #1 spots on both the 2009 Top 10 Artist Airplay chart (all genres) and the Top 10 Artist Internet Streams chart.
Her four most recent #1 singles (“Should’ve Said No,” “Love Story,” “White Horse,” and “You Belong With Me”)

This week also marks Taylor’s 10th consecutive Top 10 Country single (“Fearless”), and with that she becomes the only female artist in the 66-year history of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart to score at least five Top 10s apiece from her first two major album releases. Taylor is currently nominated for four 2010 Academy of Country Music Awards, including Entertainer of the Year.

Taylor is a four-time GRAMMY winner, the top-selling digital artist in music history, has had singles top both the Country and Pop radio charts, and had the #1 best-selling album in any genre of music in both 2009 and 2008. This year she became the youngest artist in history to win the GRAMMY Award for Album of the Year. Also at the 2010 GRAMMYs, she took home the awards for Country Album of the Year, Best Country Song, and Best Country Female Vocal Performance.

In 2009, she was named Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards, and also became the youngest artist in the 43-year history of the Country Music Association to win the CMA Award for Entertainer of the Year.

Taylor currently holds the Billboard all-genre records for most first-week downloads by a female artist, for the longest charting album of this century and for most Top 20 debuts in a calendar year, as well as the Billboard record for the largest overall airplay audience for a country-based act.

Alfredo Malabello | Ciao Bella

March 22nd 2010 02:07
AN ALBUM 35 YEARS IN THE MAKING
‘CIAO BELLA’

Alfredo Malabello's story should be an inspiration to any musician.

Born to immigrant Italian parents, Alfredo was raised in suburban Adelaide, immersed in the European culture of the 1970s. By the mid 1980s, the piano man was entertaining royalty and the glitterati of The America's Cup in Perth before moving on to witness the underbelly of Melbourne, all from behind his keyboard as he played in salubrious dens and bars. After a long stint in New York, Alfredo finally settled in Perth where he has now realised his biggest dream.

Ciao Bella is a collection of eight Italian and English songs from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as three original compositions which came out of reconnecting with his Italian roots after years of being on the road, touring and acting.

So how does a piano player who sang his way through the heyday of Australian corruption and violence in the 1980s and ‘90s wind up releasing an album about passion and burning love?

It all germinated from the TV series Carla Cametti PD on SBS where I played the role of Leo Cametti, a restaurateur and father of Carla and when I'm in the kitchen, I sing. From there I was approached to record some songs, Alfredo says.

The songs are from the past and they're songs that I heard when I was a little boy at home with mum and dad, aunties, uncles and godparents - these were the songs they were listening to… these were songs I loved.

Now, with SBS Music and Universal Music, he is proud to introduce his album Ciao Bella, which includes three original tracks, My Love, My Heart and Fatti Un Pianto that he co-wrote with fellow local artists Billy Reid and Darren Halifax.

At a later stage in his life, much like Andre Rieu and Susan Boyle, Alfredo Malabello has finally realised his dream of a major recording contract. As he prepares for the next leg of his journey, what has he learnt?

The key lesson, as I tell everyone, is if that fire burns in your heart and even if it dwindles down to a pilot light, if it's still there, keep feeding it.

Mary Gauthier

March 17th 2010 03:46
Mary Gauthier has been enjoying great success in Australia with the release of her new album The Foundling. With invitations to appear on Spicks N Specks and RocKwiz, airplay and appearances on radio stations from Radio National & the ABC, community radio from Hobart to Brisbane and Perth to Melbourne, alongside interviews with The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, The Sunday Mail (SA) and street press nationally, the support has been phenomenal to say the least.

Her Brunswick Music Festival gig was packed to the rafters, and Mary and guitarist Ed Romanoff (www.edromanoff.com) are really excited about the remaining shows on her Australian tour.

“Rarely does one see such a powerful and affecting performance as that which Mary Gauthier performed last night at Brunswick Town Hall.”
- Cat Politics www.catpolitics.blogspot.com

The Foundling, out now thru Planet/MGM and produced by Cowboy Junkies’ Michael Timmins, is a song cycle about relinquishment and adoption of which Gauthier says, “I was born to an unwed mother in 1962 and surrendered to St. Vincent’s Women and Infants Asylum on Magazine Street in New Orleans, where I spent my first year. I was subsequently adopted but left my adopted family at 15.

I wandered for years looking for, but never quite finding a place that felt like home. I searched for, found, and was denied a meeting with my birth mother when I was 45 years old. She couldn’t afford to re-open the wound she’d carried her whole life, the wound of surrendering a baby. The Foundling is my story.”

Tickets to all shows are on sale now.

Northcote (So Hungover)

March 13th 2010 12:09
In the lead-up to his third studio album Songs From The 86 Tram (set for release April 2 through Shock), wit-hot maverick The Bedroom Philosopher has officially unleashed new single Northcote (So Hungover), the follow up to previous single Tram Inspector (Inpress Single Of The Week – Dec 09).

Already on high rotation on triple J, new track Northcote (So Hungover) is a searing slice of scenester satire, and possibly the first time someone has dared attempt to capture the 'nu Australian' accent. From beneath the safety of a long fringe, our antagonist protagonist 'uh's' and 'yeah's' his way through the exploits of his band, giving you the intimacy of an overheard conversation in the comfort of your own phones.
